PREFACE.THE increase in population, and the present extent of the City of Montreal, necessarily render the compilation of this Directory & work requiring more labor and greater care than hitherto; while at the same time they add to its value to the citizens, who increasingly need the work for reference, and will assuredly appreciate evidences of greater acouracy. The present publisher, having undertaken the compilation and issue of the work within a few days only of the time necessary for commencing the canvass for the same, confesses to have in some degree miscalculated the labor necessary for completing such a Directory as he could with confidence and satisfaction submit to the public. For the consequent delay the publisher now tenders an apology ; with the feeling nevertheless that his promises of a somewhat earlier issue are to some extent atoned for by the causes which have led to it, viz., the desire to be as correct as possible.’ In à city of the present extent of Montreal very many difficulties in compilation are met with, Many persons, from misapprehension or otherwise, absolutely refuse to give any information as to their names ; and others, with some inconceivable object, give statements abeolutely false.Care, judgment, and vigilance are required as necessary qualifications in those who go from bouse to house to obtain the original information, as well as competency in both languages as to the orthography of names; and where, às always is the case, care in selection does not protect from engaging one or two incompetent persons amongst over twenty employed for this purpose, an amount of confusion.and trouble is caused which can only be understood by those who have been.engaged in such labors, and who are conversant with the amount of error caused by one act of carelessness, and the difficulties in afterwards detecting it.A want of spelling some names, either French or English, exactly in the proper manner, has led in many cases to the notice by the compiler of the omission of the name in its proper place.Steps having been taken to ascertain the cause, 16 PREFACE.such mistakes have been corrected, only on further investigation to lesd to the discovery that the name had been taken and inserted many pages out of its place owing to incorrect orthography on the part of the person originally taking the names. This is but à sample of one of the many difficulties encountered.Another and by no means minor cause of dificuliy is the want of any estab- tished names to some of tha anhnrhan streata and lanes snd the very irregular numbering of the houses. In some cases there are two houses of similar numbers in the same street, and in many cases houses without numbers of any kind ; but the publisher observes with much satisfaction the intention of the Corporation, with laudable energy, at once and completely to remedy this evil.Such action on their part will greatly facilitate the labors of compilation in future years. The slight variations in form of the present issue will, it is hoped, be approved.A considerable enlargement will be observed in the work, and the publisher may state that he has in point of fact endeavored to obtain the name of every resident in the city and suburbs.CC The publisher intends in the ensuing year, to adopt the suggestions of several gentlemen (if practicable) to issue the work with the addition of a Street Directory, sn established and appreciated feature in the Directories of larger cities, the convenience of which for reference is vory great.MacKar’s MoNTREAL DIRECTORY has hitherto received at the hands of the citizens a valued support and appreciation. This will hardly be lessened when, as will be seen by this edition, increasing labor has been bestowed with a view to accuracy ; not will the publisher’s designs be ignored when he announces his ’ intention to make accuracy and improvement a study for future years. The public can greatly contribute to this accuracy by notifying the publisher from time to time of any changes, such a8 removals, changes in names of firms, and in fact alterations of any description. The publisher concludes his preface with an expression of his appreciation of the liberal support accorded to the Directory for this year, and the hope thai this support will be merited, and in future years increased. His thank» are likewise due to many gentlemen connected with Societies and Public Institutions, who have taken pains to furnish information concerning them.Should any omission in respect of such institutions be noticed, it will be gladly supplied in fature years; the publisher desiring to make this section of the work comprehensive, methodical, and complete in all detail.JOHN LOVELL.Montreal, 7th Jaly, 1868.
