for the Grand Trunk being a Dorporation-organized for the purpose of money making it is but natural it should desire to _ monopolize what chance there is in that direction. We have no further need, in showing the want of proper spirit.on the part of the busineas men of Montreal, than to call atten: tion to the petition sent hy the Council of the Board of Trade to the + Quebec Legislature when an application for a railway charter was before it, and in which petition one of the principal clauses was that the proposed charter was against the interests of the Grand Trunk.Such solicitude by a Board of Trude for the welfare of a corporation #0 well able to take care of itself needs no com ment, and thus the policy of obstruction is not only allowed, but is aided. No sooner does a # railway project for facilitating Montreal's trade come before the public than the Grand Trunk Company is in the field prepared to kill it off. This was the case with the proposed South Shore road, and is the case with the Quebec and Ontario. In the first case the Grand Trunk organized s side company to build a road from Brosseau’s nominally to Dundee on the New York State line, actually, however, to à grave] pit at Ste.Martine, beyond which place it is doubtful if the abortion will go.And yet the Company had the assurance to oppose the charter of the South Shore zoad, which is a link in n great through western connection by urging the claim that it would interfere with their little one horse road from Brosseaus to the gravel pit at Ste.Martine.But the pretext was too thin and the act passed the Legislature restricted, however, by vondition, faiposed in consequence of the dead set which had been made against it by the Grand Trunk {nfluence. The act should only come into force by proclamation of the Lient.-Governor on his being assured that the propased tunnel was foasible, and that the Compauy could command the necessary capital was what was urged and granted.Forces do not generally have mote than one act; this one, however, has several. The last rising of the curtain discloees Mr.-8.W.Foster, the Managing Director of the Toad, with the Company’s secretary-treasurer, molicitor, assistant engineer and others making a trial trip over the road as far as Ste.Martine.No reporters are aboard, but Mr.Foster overcomes that little difficulty by himself telegraph- fng from St.Isidore to the city papers a glowing account of the excellent condition of the road and winds up with the following aninsing.Wivof.4 twaddie : — “The ene: displayed by the Comi£ny in reaching Ste Mi e, and the completion of the instrumental survey to Dundee, supplemented as they are by the arrangements now in to complete the western portion of the effctually i of the charges hitherto made the faith of the Company, and would seem to make it impossible for the baal Government to bring the South Shore Act into force without violating the cour ol their charter, which requires that due regard should be had to existing charters.” Innocent Mr.Foster, don’t you wish you may pull the wool over somebody's eyes! But it won't work. The country want, ske South Shore through connection 10 the West, ard your little gravel road is not going to stop it.Then the other case of the Quebec and Ontario road. The Grand Trunk finds that the new Company expects to make ug, of about 50 miles of road belonging to the Grand Junction Railway Company, and in.atantly has an itching to buy it so as to help Belleville. The competition results in the Grand Trank getting the road by paying more for it than the new Company, a section of which is opposed to using the Grand Junction road at all, because to use a vigorous expression it is * as crooked as a ram's Norn,” and they are better without it.And so the Grand Trenk management goes on in its mad endeavor to cor ner Montreal's competition railway connections.Butit isall in vain ; the connections are bound to be made.It would be interesting to know, however, what amount of money in thrown away and wasted by this madness.Fnough we imagine to give the workmen and train hands a good advance all round : enough, surely, to pay & handsome annual dividend upon the onlinary stock of the Company which has never paid one.Let Mr.Gooderham answer ; Mr.Bickford sy ; let Mr.B.W.Foster be jut upon the ; by all means let the Company's solicitors and officers who attended at the sessions of the Railwuy Committeer at Ottawa and Quebec + toll what they know about the cost of killing off charters and of throwing duet iu the eyes of the publie We search in vain for te items in .“the published accounts of the Company, but they or “tire there,
