to ad journ, having been marked by several cyrious episodes, the not least curious being ‘the fuct that 9.Tarte was aHowed to sit out the session unchallenged. He was either disqualitied by the Supreme Court or he wa.not.If he was, the duty of both the Government and Opposition was plain and imperative.eee The Storm Abating. We are sure that none but the most rabid Toes of Mr.Gladstone's Government will fail to be pleased at the signs that his policy of con.tiliation and of justice is dt length triumphing over the perversity and violence of his oppo- Dents, and that a brighter day seems to be dawning upon disturbed Ireland.A man less tough of fibre would have been harassed into “his grave by the annoyances and perpicxities that have fallen to Mr.Gladstone's lot during the last year.He has, however, though visibly shaken by the storm, never lost heart or varil- lated in his purpose. He saw that a radical change in the Irish land system was necessary, and he determined to carry it into effect. He “produced a ld bill containing many new provisions, and one, the general effect of which will be to give the peasantry à much stronger Bold upon the soil, an increased sense of ne- curity, and more to hope for in the future.-That bill was spwrned by those who ought wost gladly to have socepted it, and the veteran ““tatesman, weighed down with the cares and “Jabors incident, under the best of circumstances, “$0 his pre-eminent position, was compelled to ____ encounter night a Common, in which wilful obstruction and turbulence ran riot.Meanwhile Ireland was all but in rebellion ; and the most dolefal predictions were indulged in both by fricnds and by foes.Still he held his course, making what headway he could against Parliamentary obstacles, and in the Government of Ireland weighing reasonable firmness with unbounded patience. And now we learn, with an infinite sense of relief, that this splendid trust in a policy of justice and humanity is having ita reward, that serious oppasition to the Land Bill in the House of Commons may be said to have ceased and that Ireland is becoming rapidly tranquillized.English institutions have survived another crisis thanks to a statesman whom nothing could seduce into believing that the truncheon and the bayonet were the true instruments of rule in Ireland or anywhere else.City News.—Rome 860 stock is said to be due to rumors as to how debts are to be dealt with by the directors, the annual report having stated that such debts were to receive immediate attention. The leading rumor was that the new General Manager, Mr.Holland, would recommend a reduction of capital to bring about à more satisfactory state of affairs, but it is stated that everything is as yet in stats quo.A distinction must be drawn by thc public between mere lation and the business -tanding of the bank, which is certainly no wo,se, but doabtiess better than it has been for some months.Mr.C.Holland leaves for Toronto to enter upon his mew duties this week Disebedient Bniliffs.Three bailiffs of the Superior Court have been struck from the list of bailiffs for disobeying the orders of the Court. The names of the * erring ones ™ are Tessier and Narcisse Dumouchel, removed by Mr.Justice Mackay, and Baftién, suspended by Mr.Justice Torrence, There are petitions campiaininig of the acte of othay bailiffs now himself in the Police News was published at the instigation of Bills. He had seen the younger Bills distributing the papers. As tos true bill having been fonud against him in the Chicago courts for defranding the United States Government, he would my that the case was made out against him when he was absent in England, and he had received no notice of the verdiot at the time.Case in progress.Judgments Against the City.Judgments were delivered by Judge Torrance this morning in two cases against the city of Montreal et al.In the first, that of Diotte against the city, the plaintiff had sued the Corporation for damages sustained by him from being thrown out of his carriage on Maisonneuve street on account of ob- st.uctions being allowed to be placed on the side of the roadway by contractors withoat a light on a dark evening.Judgment was given for plaintiff for $3650.His Honor declaring that the Corporation could in their turn collect the amount from the contractors. The Judge alto remarked the city would avoid much trouble in future if they insisted that the regulations regarding obstructions placed on the street by builders be strictly carried out.The other case was that of Walker ra.the city et al, claiming damages for false arrest. The plaintiff was in the Spring of 1880 arrested by a constable namod Prefontaine on the charge of oxposing his person, but the charge was not proved, apd he took action for damages.Judgment for $50 against both the city and Prefon- taine. The Strike om the Wharf.a Everything on the wharvesfias been ne quiet as possible to-day, and the strike continues without any change. The officers of the Ship Laborers Society bad a conference in the Harbor Board room this afternoon, with the chairman of the Harbor Commissioners, Sir Francis Hineks, Mr.Kerry and other merchants, with the view of ex- plsining the sitnation connected with the strike, and if raible to lead to an adjustment of the anbappy differences now existing.Mr.Carroll, the President, and Messrs.Leonard and Piche stated the case of the men in a very forcible manner, dwelling upon the drawbacks which they have to encounter in their uncert£in employment. The whole subject was thoroughly discussed, but no definite understanding vas arrived at.It ia hoped, however, that with moderation and some concessions on the part of both the, ’longahoremen and - the shipowners, romething may be done throngh Mr.Robertson.Sir Francis Hineks and Mr.Kerry to bring the strike to an end.It isthe inte .of every ome to aid in nach a good work.A Blaenese in
