to Quebec. There are conflicting rumors as to the cause of “he accident, and no one sppears to be able to ; Garfield. While the bulletins sre always hopeful in tome, the opinions expressed by parties who should know sre anything but cheering, Either the bulletins are not truthful, or the uiterances of the medical mon and others who speak in a despondent manner regarding the wounded President are wisreported for the make of sensationalism, or are of mo value whatever.Mrs.Edson, the muse, who has been almost constantly in the sick chamber, and who ought surely to know whereof shes speaks, has never been very sanguine of the ultimate recovery of the patient. Her utterances have hesn most guarded, and any one reading between the lines can plainly sce a vein of despondency running through all she has said.Dr.Bliss, on the contrary, who has also been in constant attendance, has been hopeful from the very first, and any rise in temperature or other unfavorable symptom that may show itself is acconnted for as soon as it occurs. This is all very confusing, but it can possibly be explained away by the fact that the doctor is of a naturally sanguine temperament, while Mrs.Fdson may just as naturally be of a despondent one.If, as has beer hinted by some of the American papers, the physicians in attendance have been buoying up the people with false hopes, they do a great wrong. No one would regret more thin the people of the Domiuion to hear that Guiteaun’s bullet had deprived the people of the sister nation of their Chief Executive. The foul crime that laid President Garfield low is execrated just as much in Canada as in the United States, and the pro gress of the case is watched with almost equal interest in Montreal as in Washington. But Jet us have the truth. If, as is boldly stated by the Washington Capital, “The President is sinkipg fast, and his condition is most critical,” let us know it at once.It is now over six weeks since the President received his terrible wound, and during all that time, even according to the official bulletins, he has been able to take but little nagrishment.Add to this the constant lying in one position, and the constant flow of matter from his wound.and it is plain to be understood that he must be in a very weak.condition indeed. But if he is weak, we want to know it from the official bulletins, and not from unauthorized parties. While Canadians from end to end of the Dominion would rejoice to hear the glad news that President Garfield was out of danger, and on the high road to recovery, they are equally interested in knowing if there is a probability of a fatal termination, that they may join with their neighbors in the universal grief.Citv Items.—No.1 Troop of Cavalry to a man in Nova Scotia, is an impostor, as his letter itself bears thé stamp of fraud upon every page and besides his imposture was t oroughly exposed in THE STAR several years ago.But ns it seems that he is still operating in Nova Scotia and elsewhere at a distance and receiving more or less credence as well as cash from many poor people, it is perhaps necessary to give his past Bator a little ainng once more.HIS ANTECEDENTS, It may be as well to state by way of a preface that some few years 0 a well known advocate of this city was called upon in his capacity as honorary solicitor for the German Society by Mr.Munderloh, German Consul, and introduced to a man whom he said had applied to the Socicty for assistance and advice. This man was none other than the soi-disant Baron de Longueuil. He pretended that he was the direct descendant of the old Longueuil family, from one of the brothers Lemoine who were living in this country at the time of the English conquest, and who, he said, had subsequently moved down to Nova Scotia. He said the scigneury ob Longueuil had gone improperly into the hands of the Grant family, and that he and his relatives in Nova Scotia were the real owners of the estate. The solicitor heard the man's story, questioned him, took notés of him, and examined the papers which he put forward in support of his claim. The resuit of the investigation was that it was found that his name was not Longueuil, but Langille, that by a mispronuncistion it had been screwed around to sound like the former; that, anyway, the name could have nothing to do with it as the real name of the titled family was Lemoine, Longueuil being only a title; that Langille was more German than anything else, as the German language was the only tongue he could speak fluently, that his ancestors were Pro ts whereas the Lemoines were Catholies, that if he came from France at all, it was not from the same part as the Le- moines who were from Dieppe, that in fact from his own showing he could not claim the slight- answer by Tele- go to Quebeh by est connection with the Lemeines or for ward the least sign of heirship to the uil seigneury.THE BARONY OF LONGUEUIL The Baron de Longueuil, who was in possession of the estates at the time of the session of the country to the lish in 1768, had only one child, à ter, whom all his estates desopnded by inheritance. She married David Grant, Captain of a Scotch regiment, and the t Baron, whose title has been recognizad the Government, isher grandson. They have held the selgneury unoomtested for a century and half, so even indicated in the advance notices and announcements ¢ The World’ depends for - success upon the excellence of its scenic and mechanical appointments and effects. As « rule first night performances are not favorable to such productions, and last evening, furnished no exoop- tion to the rule. The play is a five act one, having eight tableaux, on each of which the curtain was dropped; the waits between the falling and rising of the curtain were long and tedious, and though the orchestra struggled valiantly to fill the gaps they wero nevertheless vory apparent. As à matter, of course, this dilliculty should disappear ufter one or two performances, but it is to be regretted that stage-managers do not have the wisdom to avoid the making of their * first night” a simple dress rehearsal.Of the play itself, the plot is laid in Cape Colony, mid-ocean, and in London. It is cleveriy put together and the dialogue is easy and natural. There is, as a matter of course, the romantic yonng heir and here, who has been and is being deiranded of hin estates; the governess who loves him, but is unfortunately ‘promised’ to his worthless brother; the hero's younger brother, the well- dressed villain; the despised wife of the younger brother; the heavy villain willing to make use of any method ; the more cautious one who belioves in olock-work, infernal machines and insurance policies, and the usual round of characters to fill up a large cast.Of the scenic effects the raft in mid-ocean is by far the most realistic and effective.It-is a wonderfully fine and natural” representation, and receivéd the applause it so well merited. We were never present at the explosion of an infernal machine, and hope never to be, but if it should be our lot, we hope the machine will be a slow one, similar to that shipped by Mr.Jewell upon the * Lily of the Valley.” Of the characters, that of Sir Clement Huntingford, known as Charles Hartley, Mr.W.A.White- car, Was one of the most prominent and effective.Mr.Whitecar has a good stage presence, u fine voice and is an accomplished actor.Mr.W.H.Lytell, Mr.Jewell alias Isidore Montgomery, the Hebrew man of business, was simply immense. His presence of mind on all occasions, even the most serious, was delightful. His dialeot was all thas could be desized, while his pantomime was irresistible.Mr.Louis Baker as Hurry Huntiny- ford was passable except in his last act, where be falls down the elevator.A more clumsy bit of acting it would be difficult to imagine.Previous to his fall he gave no indication, whatever, of a desire to commit suicide, while his descent of the elevator shaft appeared of the most deliberate kind.If he intended to jump down he should have given some intimation of it, if his death was intended to be accidental he should have made it look so.His acting of this portion of his art simply did not hang together.Miss mma Herne was a pleasing Mury Blythe, and Miss Laura G.Clancy an admirable Mabel Huntingtonford, the discarded wife. Her denunciation of her eowardy husband was very effective.Taken as a whole “The World” is well worth seeing and is likely to draw better houses, even than last night's, which was a good one.The behavior of the ocoupants of the gallery, last night, was a disgrace to any well organized place of amusement, and the management will do well to take vigorous adtion to put a stop to it in the future.- ICTORIA RIXK.—A novel and pleasing entertainment was inaugurated last evening in the Vio- toris Skating Rink, under the management of Mr.Bageard, formerly.manager of the French Dramatic Company. For an opening night, and with a performance entirely new, the audience was fairly large. The experiment is likely to prove a great success as the entertainment supplies a felt want in midsummer amusements. The programme ia of light, pleasing and varied chalk acter, the building is large and well ventilated, and opportunity is given for an occasional promenade. The evenings at the Rink are destined to become very popular.Last night the first number on the programme was an overture by the Harmony Band, led by Mr.Hardy, the baton being wielded by Mr.F.W.Mills, who has besa eugaged to conduct the orchestra. This selection was very well rendered and received loud applause. Then followed ¢ The Bassetts,” (Jedediah and Majory) an exceedingly olever couple, who, in s lively sketch entitled ‘ Miss Antique Chinaware’s Reception,” introduced a number of clever character sketches.Miss Lulu Dilmay sang two leasing ballads in & manner which captivated her earers, and elicited a hearty encore.Mr.Clarke, in humorous character songs, proved very amusing, and the whole entertainment was in every respect a success.A great many lsdies were present, and we may comment favorably on the fact that there is an entire absence of anything in the slightest degree objectionable, a feature only too liable to be present in variety entertainments.Mr.Bageard deserves to be successful in his new venture for the amusement of thoss citizens who cannot leave the city during the Summer months.Canadian Summer flames had spread to every part of the building, anû even tho gangway was in a blaze.Seeing that it was impossible to save the mill, they turned their attention to the lumber piled in the yard surrounding the building, which was mostly saved. At 8 a.m.nothing wa: standing but the engine hones. This is made of stone and not joined to the other building. The building belonged to the Rockburn fire has been kindled in the furnace for some time.It appears very suspicious to some, and others think that that it may have been caused by tramps smoking.Bodies Recovered. The body of Mr.Malcolm
