and It takes a fish which can dodge like à politician to avoid being caught. These perfected nets besides belng all along the soast of the bays, are stretched across the mouths of the fresh water rivers up which the salmon must go to spawn, and the only chance that Is given for the fish’ to pasd is from Saturday evening until Monday morning. This is admittedly ‘insuffi- slent; and so the spawning is artificially aided by catching a few healthy fish, stripping them of the ova, hatohing it, and then putting the young salmon by the thousand in the streams.Ingenious as this method is, it’ does not meet the needs. These streams—moat of them—swarm with trout who feed voraclously on the young fish, and what they leave must run the risk of falling a prey to the sheldrake ana the kingfisher.A petition is being circulated among the owners and lessees of the fishing privileges acking Hon.CG.H.Tupper, Minister of Marines and Fisheries, to direct that “ali salmon nets and traps be hereafter raised during three successive days and nights of each week.” The promotors of this innovation belleve that the ultimate interests of the net fishermen themselves will be served by such a regulation, for it will prevent the destruction of the fisheries and inoresse the now diminishing supply of salmon. Some of these pet fishermen have vested rights that must not be unfairly taken from them, but they will be eaally shown that the very worst possible polioy for them would be to kill the goose that lays the golden eggt The salmon might be indirectly protected likewise by allowing the trout to be caught with more freedom in the inland rivers.and also, perhaps, by taking means to decrease the numbers of sheldrake and kingfishers. The trout are unquestionable sore enemies of the young flesh.Thoss which have been artificially hatched are taken up the rivers in pails and dumped tnto-the running stream by the thousands. The hungry trout, however, are right at hand and gobble up a great ‘share of them before they have a chance to mature. The sbeldrake and the kingfisher, too, get many a meal off these young fish at the Government's expense, Rewards might be offered for the killing of these latter enemlea of the yoang salmon. The importance of protecting the salmon industry cannot be very well over-estimated, and the petition should receive careful consideration at the hands of the Fisheries Department.THE CHARGES AGAINST SIR SIR ADOLPHE, Tux charges against Sir Adolphe Caron, Mr.J.larsel Tarte, Thomas MoGreevy, Philip Landry and others that appear in the Toronto Globe of Baturday are most grave.Mr.Tarte has said as much about Sir Adolphe before, but, being a modest mab, he kept his own prominent part therein quite in the baek-ground.Unfortunately, the indictment is made anonymously.“A Montreal gentleman,” ‘a director of ons of the leading monetary institutions of this country,” is all that is given by way of identification of the complainant. At first blush, it would appear that one’ who takes the responsibility of making such serious charges against a Minister of the Crown and other publle men, should not do 80 from} behind a mask; but there may be a good reason for this course and the Globe minimises the apparent unfairness by taking the whole responsibility of tbe charges upon Its own shouiders. The charges, as already outifned in the SrAz of Saturday, consist in the general allegation that it has been the custom of the Congervative party from time imme- morisl to take toil-Oh ! sbade of Panaud | on all publio coütracta, and that Thomas McGreevy, a wealthy contractor, soon be- cams treasuret of this fund for the province ‘ot Quebec. An Inatance is given in connection with the North Shore railroad in these torms, veliloh likewise serve to show the assumption of intimate knowledge made by ‘the Globe! 8 informant: as McGreevy told me three years aoû showed me Tquchers 1 lo Support of his statement, that durt tor th © North tween 18 nn ET “no paid hair a mille In bad van w étors and 10 ministers’ newspa rs 1 rovince the innumerable a es tof Seediions o ar’ sue Une, of stations, - m bus apr es oi pars , + do not know; firemen and police, were being enacted, The horror- stricken crowd that had gathered in the streeta about the doomed building saw men and women clad only in their night clothes Jump from the upper stories and fall upon the atone flagaing of the sldewalks, crushed to death or serious! yinjured.Eye witnesses tell of the appearance of the upper windows of terror-strioken men and women who, unable to find escape, fell back overcome by the smoke and flames.Every window of the buliding seemed filled with men, women and children crying out & pltooualy for those below to eave them.Bome of these were certainly burned to death, as the police say that they saw them suddenly dieappear from view while great masses of flames on the instant burst out of the window where the wretched victims haa just been standing. The first hook and ladder company reached the scens about seven minutes after the flames were discovered and the firemen lost no time in running up their ladders to the windows-for the work of rescue.Alike firemen, policemen and oiti- zens mounted the ladders and carried down women and children to places of safety.According to the most reliable reports there were about 150 people, all told, sleeping in the hotel on Saturday night. How many of these were lost may not be ascertained for several days.At 3.05 o'clock Mrs.Isabelle Mears, the proprietor's wife, awakened her husband, telling bim the house was on fire.Mr, Mears 5.fo out of bed and ran into the allway.Volumes of smoke filled the halls, oat the flames were making thelr way rapidly UP THE ELEVATOR SHAFT.Mr.and Mra, Mears apartments were on the third floor and forty feet from the stairs. One glance at Bs situation wag enough for Mr, Mears. He ran back to his wile’s room and shouted, “Now you follow me,” snatchea up a coat ‘and again ran Into the hallway. He fought his way straight to the staircase, supposing that his wife was close behind him.The passageway was choked with dense smoke which almost strangled him. Then throwinæ bis overcoat over his head to prevent suffocation he bent low and gro is way to the banisters, on which left han Flames were shooting up from bélow an his hand on the ralling was burned and his hair singed. He swung himself over the hand rail and dropped tw twenty feet to the round floor, lan ng on his feet roken ne.the street he realized that his'wife was not with him, Mears implored the firemen to save his wife.A ladder was quickly laced in position to a window which h d was his wife's room andup a vols nam Merritt ran.The window selected was not the right one.In it was an unknown woman, who quickly stepped on the ladder and was carried down safely. Then the ladder was placed against the window of rs, Mears’ room.young man ran nimbly up co help save the woman, who bad already stepped upon the ladder, Bhe was very nervous and in making the descent slipped and fell to the sidewalk. She was pioked up with a sprained ankle and was otherwise badly bruised. Before the fire companies arrived one man, whose name is unknown, sprang from a third story window and wae dashed to death on the ground below.People turned their faces away horrified at the sight. This was on the Sixth avenue side of the building.A moment later another man lea, from a window on Fortieth street and was instantly killed.Shortly alter two women jumped trom windows on the Bixth avenue side and WERE DEAD WEEN PICKED UP.Their bodies were taken to the Thirtieth streot atation house and afterwards, unidentified, removed to the morgue. All'this time the fire was raging tlercely, and it was plain that the building was doorn- ed.The structure burned like kindling wood. The work of rescuing the guests still went op, and many were taken from the yindowa by firemen and policemen.Ber- Ward and Patrolman Philips, of ire Patrol No.4%, went into room on tbe fourth floor front and rescued Walter H, Phelps and wife down a ladder. They also succeeded in paving Mrs.Samuel Xnaff, who was about to leap from one of the windows on the third floor.Mr.Fred Ulmann Lhe hops dealer, hs been guest; al the + Royal for years and vod with bis brother Simeon and PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.HOUGH the result of the &rars First Annual Snowshoe Steeplechase held on Saturday afterneon was unexpected, it showed conclusive ly that snowshoeing is not dead by any means, and that in and around Montreal there are any number of promising, though unknown, young athletes who only peed proper encouragement to come out in public and make their mark.To those who know a little of snowshoers and their work the result was fairly bewildering and when the result of the race Was announced on the STar's bulletin board people thought there was a mistake somewhere till those who returned from the Club House corroborated tno pes ws that Lachine, represented by Davis, who only entered the very a had won the cup and in remarkabiy aa time too, taking into consideration the cut up condition of the track which the pickets containing big black “stars,” at the top, had pointed out but too well to the hundreds of pedestrians without snowshoes who nov Witbetandine the published requests had persisted in tramping. That the public still takes a , Sront interest in snowshoeing was shown by the immense crowds which had gathered both atthe start and finish, though they tended to make the affair loo 8 times a much like an obstacle a eos country Bteeple ‘ohace “But though excited and noisy at es the crowd was good-natured and me slatic, and the fact of so many witnesses to their victory or defeat must have acted as a powerful tonic on the runners, As to the final result, with the exception of the man who came in first, it was much as anticipated though many hed confidently expeoted that Mason would find a place nearer the front.Gentleman was in great trim, but be could not keep ahead of the Linchine man, and with the STAR and the Lachine races, Montreal and Argyles have preity evenly divided honors this year. The crowds at the starting vlace began to gather as early as three, and slelghs kept assing to ana fro at a walk in arse num- r& As iv was far from mild, es Taylor, president of the M.A.À.À.INVITED ALL THE pe to send their men to the gymnasium to dress, an excellent idea, which prevented the interference of the crowd and the cold from chilling the men during the few migutes of necessary delay before thestar and the offer was made use of by neariy al the runners except Mason, who remained in as sleigh near the starting place, bundled up ge fur coat.Almost as soon as the trampers with blue tuques, some thirty-five stronæ, under command of the vice-presl- dent, Mr.Starke, had started off, the runners began to enter, and soon the gymoasium was a scone of great activit .e officlals had also met there,” au 6 various presidente had all they Cd do to ook after their respeo- tive club représentatives.it was here also that the men rogatvet their numbers. At about four, when Norman Fletcher announced that it was time to make for the starting vlace, some one called attention to the fact that one of the runners, a healthy- looking, well-built young man.whose face was strange to most of them, and seemed have no one look after his Interests had not yet re- celved his number, and he turned ‘out to be Davis, of Lachine, upon whom none of those present bad at that moment the slightest intention of looking in the, light of a probable or even possible winner; in fact, no one thought that he would ‘even be placed.THE START, It was not much after the appointed time when the orack of Mr.Fletcher's pistol sent the runners off on thelr mountain climbing, cup winning journey. But to the anxious, expectant crowd, waiting in the cold, bd seemed a long time; for they gather at the foot of MoTavieh street ee an hour before the time advertised for the steeplechasers to start. The first group of ppectators soon grew into a crowd that al- ost hlocked the street. Then the sieighs gan pouring in.Some took up positions along the side of Bherbruoke stroef, ready at the sound of the pistol lo daeh off for the Ciub House and brin Ja olr passengers in time to see the fini race of horses against snowshoers, Then dame a long procession of sleighs which drove up McTavish street, agd secured positions of vantage along Pine avenue where the first hard strugæle could be witn .It was a good natured, happy crowd acd they did not seem ihe cold a bit.The Tandem Club os ne Sherbrooke street, but the fours-in-hand, the unicorns and the tandems were safely piloted through the crowd, ub men, in bianket sults, were scrutinized, but their heavy siothing and early arrival soon answered that they were not contestants.Among the first to arrive were several members of Le Canadien Club, with their ranners. The latter were Kept bundled in their big coats until it was time to lineup. No one understands the injurious effects of a chill better than a runner, and so THEY TOOK GOOD CARE not to get cooled down by exposure before the contest began. The runners were down at e Club House until all ready, and then off they went to the start. As they came In sight the crowd cheered them and gathered around to inspect each face, to see who the starters were and how they looked. They all had thelr heavy coats or tunics on and only threw them aside as they took their positions for the start, A line was drawn across foot of the street, the crowd pushed back by the aid of a number of policemen and lab officials, and the street opened up as well as could be undar the circumstances. The starters were too many to off in one line and so two files were drawn across the street. It ont rank some slight advantage, ut it Was really of no importance when the distance of the race was considered.Mr.Norman Fletcher, the official starter of the A.A.A, and the best man in Canada to send -off a race, got his men in order, and then, standing before the column, proceeded 10 call off thie names from the Lofolai list of entries, The following bad thelr snowshoes on and answered “here” from the it could be seen ! played out, and loping ground all the time. When they had reached the creek that runs across the track near the foot of the Park Toboggan Gentleman and Davis were terms, running side by side, and going at a stiff pace, although Davis seemed in better shape than his rival Mason was now about one hundred yards behind, with Dodds and G.R.Baillie close up.Dodds looked used up, but Baillie was in for a place, and Steele wae giving him lots to do to keep ahead. After Steele came Wilson, who was running well and apparently would be able to make a good finish. Then came Outhet, Sykes, and Briere, who were all pretty well Jozged out.The next bunch contained W.J.Baillie, Paris, Turnbull and nsom, Parle appeared the freshest man of the lot, and was very anxious to know how many were ahead Im.Paris made a great burst after coming out of the gully and passed about haif a dozen on the run down the hill. The remainder of the runners now began to straggle along one after the other, from fitty to ome hundred yards apa art and appeared in very bad shape. At this point ang at the Park Slide there were great crowds, and while the runners went past they were cheered on by their Admirers.Nearly everybody had a word for Gentleman as he passed, but the onlookers were mostly all at sea to know who Davis was. Many thought he was Lumsden, but when they got à look at the winner they could see it was not Lumsden’s well-known face.Mason had many sympathizers and he was given many a word of encouragement, but 1t was all he could do to hold his place, let alone make an effort to catch ap As the wearers of the winged wheel pass three of whom were in the next four, they were heartily cheered as was also Steele, who 18 also a favorite, After this the excitement simmered down and before the last man had passed, mostly everybody had started back to the city or continued on their way to the Club House to hear the results and see the prizes presented.AT THE FOOT OF THE GULLY.At the foot uf the gully the crowd, eagerly waiting to watch the progress ‘of the young athletes, was filling up the roadway in such a manner that it was difficult to in view, exercieing themeelves as if their very existence depended upon the resuit of the race.Speculation was rife as to who would be leading and their respective chances of victory.Gentleman was easily recognized, but who was that pushing him so hard?Nobody knew until they passed, when it-was found out by his number that it was Davis, of Lachine. He was looking fresh as paint, while on the other hand Gentleman seemed to be fagged out.He led at the ully, but Davis kept close at his heels, flacon came next, wearing an anxiouscoun- tenance.Dodd was a little behind with Out- het next. The others came up in a strax- gling! line, The majority of them walked up vhe gully.THROUGH THE CEMETERY.A cemetery is about the last place any person would think about going to to see a snowshoe race. But so great was the interest taken in the STAB’s mountain race that people took the opportunity of being at every point of vantage whore the could see the plucky ¥ young.men, fordod a good opportunity of seelpg the mes and to it a good many resorted.Hera it was expected that the runners would gather up En the energies that they haa left and make tbe final spurt as they came in sight of the towers of the Club House, thelr destination, which many of them were anxiously looking for.il they be long?” & gentleman asked a STAR rter.“I think not,” was the answer, An unusually long line of sieighs of all descriptions came in view, from the big four-horsed ones to the Shetland pony style, te des Neiges road, all going at a rating gait, with merry crews all bound be in at the finish.A goodly number a came over by the course with and without snowshoes, and beat the track retty well down, but they were all bent on he same mission.eyes were now turned towarde the bend in the road at the top of the vaults, swaitiig the appearance of the runners. They had not long to wait as with one voice the spectators exclaimed * Here they come,” as with s bound one came round the corner, then another and is he?” was the question asked by all.The leader was unknown to the knowing ones aud soon it leaked out that it was Davis, of Lachine.“A fine strong runner is he and Jikely to maintain his lead if he does not increase it, for he has Gentleman well in hand,” said another.Gentleman was running pluckily, but evidently the pace was too fast for him, although he was making a Iast effort to get even with Davis.Mason, who did so well the previous Saturday, was third, but he seemed to be winded and in trouble.Steele and G.R.Bailile were running each other pretty tightly and pullin up well.Next game oi lison, with his cla companion, Dodd, far behind him.Sykes, Briere and Wo >.‘aille were the next three, and they were showing signe of distress, Geo.Paris led his club mate, Turn- bull, and behind him was Outhet.som, Godwin and Scott were the next.trio, with Anthony almost abreast of Scott. Then there was a perceptible falling off in the speed of the remainder of © distance between them The next man to com round tte bend was Ness, with Drabble shortiy after.Braham led the Crescents’ contingent, which consisted of Clarke and and himself, Clarke so exhausted with crampe that he Was unkble to continue.Willing hands were soon around him,and he was pioked up, put in a sleigh, and driven down to a house on the road side, where he was oared for sndbrought round.Dixon was the whipper-in of a line of twenty-three runners, AT THE FINISH.At the finish the greatest excitement pre- valled, and the enormous crowds gathered near the Club House were impatiently awaiting the arrival of the first comer.Fortunately, a couple of members of tne Montrea!
