but we are human, and an injustice done by either race to the other must soon rankle into a cause of discord and danger, We want no stolen Alsace and Lorraine festering between us, It is best—it is necessary for the welding together fo! a common nationality that neither feel that it has been outwitted or overreached or placed at a disadvantage by the other.No one will doubt after the protest of the |.English-speaking Young Conservative Clubs that the English element on Montreal island does 20 feel over the cireumstanco that the proposed redivision of He island by the Thompson bill increases ‘.s French con- stituences from four to sev + while the English-speaking divisions a: .left at the old number—two It need hardly be sald that the [English are not so short-sighted as to blame this upon the French people.The injustice is clearly the work of the politicians from a motive of what we fancy they wiil find to be false expediency.They calculated upon the ability of Mr.Curran to “xeep the boys quiet;” and from the present upheaval they svem to have overestimated his powers of pacification.“The boys” certainly were kept “quiet” for a long time to thelr own great disadvantage, but lt was by a political anæsthetic not commoniy employed by men of honor.As for the part played by the two French ministers—Mr.Ouimet and Mr.Chapleau—it is difficult to judge whether they or a defective postal delivery were to blame; but at all events, they could Hot be expected to outrun our English representatives In looking after English interests.And just here we feel to some extent the grave wrong that was done us when the English minority in Quebeo was deprived of its active minister at Ottawa, Neither Mr.Pope nor Mr.Colby would.have permitted our rights to be so flagrantly ignored.Still 1! the English Conservatives of Montreal arecontent to allow themselves to be deprived of their minister without & whimper on the ground that making Mr.Abbott nominal Premier has endowed him with the energy and vigilance of two men—a doctrine that Ontario never accepted oven in the case of Sir John Macdonald,and ‘which this very gerrymander inoident does not seem fo bear out—they must put up with the consequences.; As to the equity of the claim of the English- speaking Montrealers, there can be no pos- ble} shadow of doubt.Taking the latest religious census, as we did the other day, the Protestants are seen to have a right to two members, while the Irish Catholios should have one more.As it is, the English Protestants will have but one—8t.Antoine —and the Irish Catholics will have another in Bt.Anne's division.This gives the Eng- Ush-speaking electors two-ninthe et the representation of the island, ‘Where! théy should have one-third by the test of numbeis.The rest of the English voters are got ‘Fid of by burying them In the over-whelmingiy French divisions of St.Lawrezce and Hoche- laga.This 1s far too serious a matter to let the politicians play with, Our Frenoh feilow- citizens will be the first to admit that we have not been fairly treated.Government has a tremendous lot to do with our financial success; tor $35,289.21, alleged ‘to be due the late John 8.McLachlan in virtue of an agreement of April 17, 1890, with the firm of which he was then a member.The Merchants Bank contested the claim on the ground that the claim was lor, capital, up to deceased's death, had not been withdrawn from the business.Further that by the deed of dissolution of April 10, 1886, of the lirm McLachlan Brothers & Co., the said J.S.McLachlan hada stipulated that his capital should remain in the business, and that he should only rank after the ordinary creditors.The Court held that the late Jno.8.McLachlan should be looked upon up to the time of his death as the sole partner of Wiillam McLachlan; that his partiol- pation in the business and profits of the insolvent firm, entailed obligation to share in its losses, and that the fact that his exccutors had permitted the business of the insolvent firm to continue up to tho time of assignment without demanding liquidation, and without taking measures to free themselves of responsibility, could not prejudice the rights of third parties, nor confer a right which the ] Jah .dcLachlan could not have exercised himself, that of taking rank with the ordinary creditors.The curator, Mr.W.A.Caldwell, was_acoordingly In- -ptructéa not to consider the clalm, until the ordinary creditors were satisfled.Costs gainst claimants, ‘ “The claim of Dame Annie Mclaren against Wm.McLachlan, et al, insolvents, Merchants Bank, contestant, has been dismissed, with costs; Judge Teller ordering the curator, W.8.Usldwell, not to consider claimant’s claim Tor $15,498 until after the ayment of the creditors, ‘I'he cofitestant Pp alleged thet entries to lhe credit of the clatmant in the boolta of the insolvent firm were fictitious and .nade in collusion with Jobin 8, Mokschlan, to preserve certain property belonging to him or to the firm, and that any sums appearing to the credit of claimant were not her personal property.The court held that the contestant had fustifisd the essential allegations of the contestation, and delivered judgment acaordingly.An Action Dismissed.“The action of the Sisters of the Côngrera- tion of Notre Dame de Montreal against the School Commissioners of Cote St.Paul has been dismissed with costa by Judge Doherty.Plaintiff stated that the had agreed to erect a séhool house, if a suitable site were given them, and on condition thaï they shall be exempt from taxation, in the municipality of Cote St.Paul, and further that the commissioners should pay them an annual sum of $900 for twenty- ive ‘years.The ‘plaintiffs had erected a schoolhouse nt à cost of $24,688.In April, 1891, defendants had notified piaintiffe thay.their ser would ‘be mo longer required.alntiffs now sued for judgment 0 due September 1st, with interest.The Court having re viewed the facts of the case, decided that the commissioners had no power to enter into such a ‘contract, which was thersfore null and void.viens The pl Fined for Using Threatening 1 Language.James -Pettestro and Alexis Pars, firemen, were fined eight dollars each by Judge Des- noyers this morning for using threatening language egainst Alexis Dupre, © MARRIAGES, MACKENZIE-LAFORTUNE~AL Notre Dame ane Mnckabrie, of tho Jacques Chri) Alexa “MackKengie, ol.tue ues Cartler Bank, nephow of Mon.Rodrigue Masson, to Ales Juliette Lafortune, © : DEATHS, .WICKHAM- ul, ° : y UE .double wid ; : A ifteen injured combatants were taken to land is daily dropping under the scare of Lhe ese were familiar words; A J.B.Normand, Esq, of Three Livers.Heliotrope Striped Bedford Cords, 85a au ir fe ND et ce tien od’ ca The Piano speaks for itself.and Price List.hospitals for treatment.Many other per- supposed coming of Home Ruie in Ireland.did they think of them! made public for the firat time by the STAR.This famous criminal, for there are no less than four charges of murder hanging over bis head, turns out to be a Canadian, calling Quebec his native city and MoGill College his ala mater.The STAR has secured information which can leave no doubt in the public mind tpat Thomas Nelll, the accused poisoper, and Doctor Thomas Neill Cream, who perved a long term of prison life in the Iilinois State prison at Joliette for she crime of abortion, are one and the same person.The letters which the STAR published exclusively on.Saturday form the connecting link in the ohaln of evidence,and - now for the first time is given to the public a history of the remarkable criminal career of this man.It is a story of a clever man, of good family; eo far as worldly goods were concerned, comfortably oft, deliberately and persistently foliowing a course of criminal practices, undeterred by exposure and untamed even by the law's punishment Both In Canada and the United States did Neill or Cream pursue his evil calling, and driven out «f Canada by the force of public opinion, he was at inst *“ convictad 1b fe United States.Neill had apparently every incentive that could make him desire to rise honorably In his profession, which was that of medicine.Of undoubted ability, belonging to a “well- known and highly respected family, a favorite with all whom he came in contact, he bad, moreover, sufficient wealth to preclude the idea that the desire for a mere existence alone could have led him into THOSE OBIMINAL PRACTICES, which he has followed steadily from the very year in which he recelved his cap and gown from MoGill University.It appears to have been a perverse nature, veiled under a falr exterior,together with an utter absence of any conscientious scruples that have caused this man, now standing in trial for life in London, to continue a career of crime, even aîter the warnings he had received in Canada and in the United States.Even the fortune, which on leaving prison Neill found bimsel! possessed of, could not turn the ex-convict from the evil of his ways.Crime seems to have been implanted in the man, and the history of his career, which the STAR now gives, will fully bear out this statement, Thomas Nefll Crean, although he has lived the most of his fe on the American con- .tinent, principally in prison, it may be added, was born, 80 the register of MaGill - College says, in Glasgow, Scotland, on May 27, 1850, and he is, consequently, forty-two yours of age.While still & young lad his parents emigrated to Canada, settiing in the ancient capital, Quebec.The Creams - ‘Yyere a numerous family, thers being four “ boys and three girls.But in his business as a wholesale lumber merchant in Quebec, old Mr.Cream managed to accumulate a comfortable competency.Young Cream, BB himself, a stout lad, was first apprenticed > the shipbuilding tirade, working in the ds as a carpenter.He, however, consid” ered thivemployment too ignoble, and as heshowed considerable natural ability, his father decided to send him to Montreal to © mtudy at McGill College for the profeasion of medicine, to which Cream had a predilko- tion, He went through his chosen course with great credit to himself, nor did he then show any of those traits whieh afterwards made him so criminally famous.Of Uream’s career at MoGill University thére are probably many members of the medical profession, both in Montreal and in other parts of Canada, who are able to speak With d'stinet remembrance.The jovial, easy-going young student Is not likely to be entirely forgotten by many of his olass-mates, for he was & rather striking figure while studying here.A prominent Queen's Counsel, a contemporary student In Arts, remembers Cream well.The young Quebecer had not been "Jong at McGill before he had achieved the “ reputation of being a good deal of a “high xoller.” He always was well supplied with money and spent it freely in company with his olase-mates.He mingled in good society here and was fond of social Intercourae.He always dressed neatly and rashionably, his clothes were expensive, and he wan not a little proud, so it is said, of his personal appearance.One particular garment, which Nelll was very proud of, was a MAGNIFICENT BEALSKIN OVERCOAT, “end with this he managed to attract a good i.deal of attention when he appeared on the reots,a sealskin overcoat being sordething of ararity in those days, especially when ‘worn by » medical student.He owned and drove a pair of horses in a stylish turnout, “and, in fact, lived usually like 8 young gentleman of leisure and independent fortune.Nevertheless, be did not neglect his studies, id when, in 1876, he came up for his pal examinations he graduatod with credit, Men who have since made their mark in the fuedical profession in Canada were clnsg- mates of Cream.Dr.Robert Wilson Powell, of Ottawa and physician and medical ade viser to the late Sir John A.Macdonald, was pe gold medallist of that year.Another rélisiinowu momber of cho profession, who yradunted with Cream, was the late Doctor ohard Le MacDonnell, of Montreal.Other aus-matés of Cream were Dootors Charles Btevenson, Satnia, Ont; mpbell, London, ray, Heokston.Ont.: Herbert.Reda Jackston, Ont.; Her graduating class of 1876.Cream 1s sitting n the centre of the group in a reclining pasition.He Is dressed in a Prince Albort coat, a striped dark nevk-tie, aud is looking forward intently.Just behind Cream stands Dr.R.W.Powell, and the pwnd of the late Dr.R.L.MaoDonnell rests on the shoulder of the man who is now fighting Justice for hig life.Oream's photograph shows a rather short man, with a high forehead, hair short and somewhat bristly ; & clean shaved, determined out chin; long side whiskers of the Dundreary type, with a moustache meeting his whiskers.People here who knew him pronounce the likeness a good one.His beard, nair and mous tache were of a reddish tint.Looking at the after career of this man, it is a curious coincidence that the professor of Cream’'s olass dwelt especially, so another of the graduates informed the STAR reporter, on the evils of abortion, and warned the members particularly against the crime.This was when the class was breaking up after the capping ceremony had been performed.Cream’s criminal career commenced almost immediately after leaving the University.Beginning the practice of medicine In Kingston, Ont.it was not long before whispers were in ciroulation regarding certain unprofessional practices that were strongly suspected on the part of the young M.D.The sudden death of a woman in that oity and the examination thav resulted pointed to Orearn as the author of an attempt at malpractice.There was a good deal of street talk over the death; but the evidence against the young doctor was not considered conclusive enough to warrant them in arresting him.The matter Was & nine-days' talk and then it dropped, Bhortly afterwards, however, the dead body of a young woman was one morning found lying ina shed in the rear of Cream’s office.The authorities again took this matter up, and the coroner's post mortem proved beyona a doubt that the woman had perished from the effects,of a criminal opera- fon, Suspiclon was now a certainty, apd the practitioner was arrested, charged with the crime.The case was brought to trial, and altholigh the evidence pointed very strongly to Dr.Cream as the man who had committed the deed: the testimony was insufficient to con- viet him ana Oream wae discharged.Public opinion wae so arousea, how-” ever, that Cream lost his practice and.was Æenerally looked dowñ upon, Dis- sted with Canada, he emigrated and made Jhicagn, 1lls, his home.THIS WAS IK THE LATTER PART OF 1878.Cream was now evidently a confirmed abortionist.In Chicago he continued his evil practices and this time he was captured at his old work.A great commotion was caused in Chicagofabout the latter part of 1878,by the death from malpractice of a Chicago lady, Cream was her attendant, and his Canadian record was look up, and suspicion pointed strongly to him.For the second time ‘In his short medical career, the young Canadian found himself under arrest, charged with the worst 0} all orimes against humanity, and, in this instance, the facts were brought directly home to Him.The testimony of a colored maid-servant, who saw the operation performed, convicted Cream.or description of the affair, as given in her evidence, was most revolting.Cream’s eareer was brought to an untimely close by his being sentenced to imprisonment for life in the Illinois State prison at Joliette.This disgracetul ending to what bad pro brilliant career fog with him a large sum of money, He k up his residence in Chicago, staying at eo Palmer House,and from there made persistent but unavailing eftorts to secure the pardon and release of his gullty son.He disbursed large sums of money in this way.What his {ather with his wealth could not accomplish, nature did for Cream.After serving some thirteen years of the sentence he received a don on account of constitutional ill-health.The convicted abortioniet was a free man once more, When Cream, after hislong term of enforced seclusion, entered again the outer world he found himself the possessor of a comfortable fortune.During hisimpri- sonment his father haa died and divided his fortune among his children, not’ forgstting that son who had so disgraced him,and who was serving a life sentence for his horrible erimes.e clause of his father’s will in which Dr.Cream was left a legacy, was as follows: "I hereby be to my son, Thomas Nelll roam, the sum of $16,000 I» the stock of the Merchants Bank of Canada for his own use should he ever regain his rights of citizenship.” Cream eppears to have no sooner got clear of prison than he began TO CONTEMPLATE NEW CRIMES.The criminal desire was stitl there.But this time he changed his mode of operation, and utilized poison as a means of blackmail ng.He came to Montreal from Joliette, realized on his bank stock and orvssed the Atlantic to London.When next criminally heard of it was in the Bow Street Police Court in London, where, under the name of Thomas Neill, hie two Christian names, he was charged with attempting to extort money from Dr, Harper, of Barnsatable, by declaring that he wanted £15600 to suppress evidence proving that Dr.Harper's son had olsoned Alice Marsh and Emma Shrivell, wo girls whose death from atrychnine poisoning caused considerable sensation in England.- Dr.Harper testified as to the receipt of the letter in which the demand was made, and as to his turning the matter over to the police.Young Harper, who is a student, at St.Thomas’ Hospital, where tlie girls were taken after it was discovered that *they wore poisoned, also testified.He recognized Neill as a man who had lodged for several months in the same house with him, - but with whom he had never exchanged a word, Emily suffer- od agony from internal pains and cerwaln incidents in connection with her death led to tbe suspicion that she had been murdered, Her boay was recently exhumed, and the stomach was: submitted to Mr "Thomas Stevenson, the Government analyst, for examination, This official found traces of strychnine that had probably been administered to the wirl in gelatine capsules, such ag those whicn the Marsh ana bhrivell girld, vefore they expired, de- elared had been given to them by a man with whom they agsoclated.No doubt is entertained by tha police that these capsules contained the strychniae that the aubse- quent post mortem examination revealed, and that the girls were wilfully murdered.Six and three-quarter grains of the poison were found In the stomach and viscera of the Marsh girl, and not quite two grains in the Shrivell girl.One grain of strychnine is à fatal dose for an adult person.Sergeant Mintyre testifled that Neili told him he had met a woman who said the police had sent her to make his Nelil's) acquaintance, ns they believed © Was counected with the poisonings.The prisoner, the witness said, had surprised him by his intimate knowledge of all the facts in connection with the poisoning of Miss Marsh and Miss Shrivell.When questioned as to Lhe source of his knowledge, he explained that he had foilowad the cases closely by reading the reports that had been printed in the medical journals.The letter from Neill to Dr.Harper was as follows: DEAR Sm,—I have to inform you that one of my operators has positive proof that W.Harper medical student, of St.Thomas Hospital, and son of Dr.Harver, of Barnstaple, 18 responsible for the deaths of Alice Marsh and Emma Shrivell, he having polsoned those girls with strychnine.*“This proof you can have on paying my bill for services to George Clark, detective, of Cockspur atreet, Charing Cross, to ‘whom I will give the proof on his paying my bill.—Yours respectfully, .H.Murray.WHILE IN ENGLAND ON HIS FIRST TRIP, after being released, Neill or Cream made the acquaintance of a Miss Sabitini, to whom he became engaged.At Neill's instie gation Miss Sabitini wrote the black.DR.THOMAS NEILL ORBAM.mailin letters which were signed Ww.Murray.The charge ainst Neill now is that he has poisoned Matilda Clover, and the train of cireumstances such as lead the London lice to believe that he alsa killed he other girls whose names appear above, The identity of Thomas Neil the prisoner, with Dr.Thomas Neil Cream, the great Canadian abortionist, as he was called at the time of his triat in Chicago, i8 clearly proven by the series of letters which the Star published exciuelvely on Saturday, and whieh are now in the possession of Mr.D.Battersby, of Montreal.‘The letters to Mr.Battereby, enquiring as to steamship rates from New York to Glasgow and Liverpool, were signed T.N.Cream, M.D., Blanchard’s Hotel, Quebec, and it will be remembered that after Nelil had made his arrangements for his wedding with Miss babattini in London and started for Canada in March last, he left her instructions to address all his letters: Dr.Cream, care of Daniel Cream, Blanchard’s Hotel, Quebec.” The letter from the Albion Hotel to Mr Battersby on March 19 last, stating that he expected a parcel to como by post to Montreal and asking Mr.Battersby to forward it by ost to Liverpool were also signe by Cream.The packet which contaîneu the printed blaokmalling circulars signed W, H, Murray arrived addressed to Cream and were forwarded to Cream in Liverpool, and Cream wrote to Mr.Battersbyacknowledging the receipt.This connects Cream and Neill in an unmistakable manpaer, it will readily sean.When Cream visited Canada in March last he met his gister Rachel and his brother Daniel in Quebec.It may be perhaps be a Jere coincidence.but it is interesting to note that Miss Rachell Cream, a sister of Dr.Cream, saiied from Quebec to Liverpool on June 15th inet, on the Beaver Line 88S.“Lake Superior.” Bbe arrived in Liverpool at noon on Saturday.It would therefore, look LL 4 M Cream had been in communication with her brother and had croseed the Atlantic to ron- der him what assistance she could.People in Montreai who know Miss Cream weli state that she is not in the habit of travelling, and this is the only explanation they can bring to bear on her sudden departure.WHEN OREAM GOT INTO TROUBLE in Chicago the governors of MoGill College caused bis name to be struck off the rolls, after such a course had been recommended by the Faculty.The last trace of his name on the rolis appears in the list of 1881.At the time Cream attended college, Dr, William Osler, now a professor of the Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, was the dean of McGtil, Dr, Osler is at present in Europe.Years ago before Cream commenced studying for his profession, he was of a religious turn of mind, and was a Sunday- school teacber in the Chalmers’ Onhurch in Quebec.it Is stated that Dr.Cream, while in Ontario, was forced to marry a girl whom he had wronged there.The relatives of the injured girl captured Cream just as he was getting on the train to leave for the United States, and he was compelled to make reparation at the point of the pistol.Cream left his bride at the altar and never returned to her, .A prominent Queen's Counssl In this city, referring to Cream'’s liberality while at col- lego, recalled the fact of a very valuable prize which Cream had once put up for competition in the sporting events, There was some discussion among the committee, of which Cream was a member as to whether or nov they should accept a prize from a fellow-student.But it was fi:.ally decided to take advantage of young Croam’s generosity, and shis deolsion was the more readily reached on account of THE VALUE OF THE TROPHY.The same gentleman stated that Cream was always willing to liberally patronize the sports and he was & great ite among his Fellow-students.Cream was the possessor of a highly oulti- vated voice and was always in demand at the smoking concerts of the college boys, He was also a musiciéu of no mean ability, and took a good deal of pleasure in exercising his talents.While in this eity he boarded with a Miss Porter, then a musio teacher.She is now in Toronto.am’s room was a favorite resort of his contemporaries in college, and he frequently had parttes in his apartments.The accounts of Qream's trial: in Chicago, were published at the time in the Canadian papers, and created great excitement, both n Montreal and’ Quebec, where he was so well known, The Chicago papers devoted pages to the trial and Cream was universally known throughout thas city as the “Great Canadian Abortionist.” The detalis of the crime of which Cream was convicted were of an exceedingly sensational na ture, as may well be supposed.Cream was strongly suspected then of the death from malpractice of a second woman in Chicago, but the particulars of the ofime wore never dlecovered and consequently never brought home to the doctor.‘ne best legal talent in the city was engaged In Queszo, June 27.-Dr.Thomas Cream alias Neill, alias Murray, now under arrest for poisoning Matilde Clevy, in London, is well known here, where he is well related.From parties who knew him and who met him when he last visited Quebec, the following datails wers learned : Tom Cream, as he was commonly known here, was about;
