pollticians think sn or pot.For tre Catnotle Church, speaking as the witness of Jesus Christ and His revelation, teaches and has taught from the carliest days of Christianity that the marriage contract between two baptized persons is always a aacrament, whether it be received worthily or rot; that the contract and the sacrament are inseparable from each other, the contract being itsel! the sacramemt and the raorament beïng itrelf the contract.“It non-Catholles are satisfied with a mere secular contract of marriage we will not quarrel with them on the subject. We have neither the right nor the power to force the gifts of God upon them. But it it i= the right and the Indispensable duty of the rulers of the Catholic Church to prevent her children from taking part in any proceeding that conflicts with their Catholic faith, and degrades what they believe to he a sacrament Instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ for the sanctification of the souls of men.It is deplorable that any Catholic should assist at a ceremony which robs Christian ma of its sacramental character, thereby bring- sing it down to the level of a market bar gain, and making it rescindible, thus opening wide the door for adulterous concubinage.By such an act he dishonors the all-holy Redeemer of the world, who in the author of every sacrament and of all grace. It fa still more deplorable, and more beinously criminal before God and men, that a Catholic lady should not merely assist as spectator of such a scene, hut should dress herself up as one of the actresses in the drama, and parade herself on the platform as one of the principal performers.* “Lat not those who went to that house of unbelief for the purpose of witnessing the spectacle try to excuse themrelves from the charge of criminal participation on the ground that they took no part in the act, and desired only to amuse themselves, as they would at a theatre, Their voluntary presence at the scenic enter- talnment was of Îteelf participation in the act, and was manifestly an insult to the holy faith they profeas, “Whosoever goes to a theatre to witness what he Mows to be a offensive to bis national feel credit outbreak of typhoid fever at I igon- fel.a suburb of Belfast, ard it is feared that the disease may spread to the city.In a newspaper communication John Dillon writes: It is admitted now by all except Dublin Castle that over large districts in the west and southwest of Ireland severe distresa, amounting to famine ir some places, will prevail during the coming winter and spring. As in 1845 and 1879, and other fam- ne years, the Government has begun by vigorously denying that there is cause for alarm. This attitude is always maintained until after the November rents are collected.Meanwhile the area and intensity of distress a increased greatly by levyirg rents on a ple who soon will be face to face with starvation.Ejectments and processes for rent are falliig like snowflakes over the distressed districts. We hold that the duty of providing against distress lies entirely on the Government, and that it has no right to leave the people to the charity of the world.; Pertodic famines ia Ireland are the direct result of thts Goye ent. This year, and {ir the last years, $15, 000,000 has besn taken.annunily from- Ireland unjustly by excessive taxation.One-sixth of the sum of which Ireland han robbed this year would p vide, 1! judictously expended, for the wants of the distressed district: # ao companied by a measure placing a check or the levying of remts in the famine district xty-seven Irish members out of a total of 108 signed a memorial to Mr.Balfour asking for the {mmediats summoning of Parliament in order to make proper provision for relief works.and to pass some measure to restrain the levying of excessive rents.Mr.Balfour's answer was the old one: ‘The Government carefully watching the distress, and has ample powers to deal with it,” That is excatly what was said in 1845.The Government continued to watch while thousands died of hunger. We have no confidence In the official machinery of the Jrish Government, and we do not believe that tbe further thinning out of the Irish population wonid be 8 matter of regret to the Castle authorl- les.The best service our friends in America can render will be to hold meetings, to exrose the callous attitude of the Irish Government, and to demand in the name of common humanity that the Government shall do its duty.DAWSON PICTURED.The Fries Party Say Danger of Star- vatign Bxists.Victoria, B.C., October
