Leagu% cir- cult, this season, and I wouldn't ask for A better betting proposition than to stack them up against the old Chicago and New York push, if such a thing were possible.I'd string my money along with the old outfit with all the confidence in the world. There never was another baseball aggregailon like the old Chicagnes, unless I except the Giants at their best. They had the best infield, the greatest pitcher in Goldsmith bar one, Tim Keefe, and the best «enecral player in Mike Kelly that ever Happened.Kelly was the trickiest player I ever Knew, and he achieved results, too.ABOUT TIONEST JOHN KELLY.A man who has figured in every deparf- ment of baseball will, 1 think, agree me in a comparison of the players of today and of the past.I mean Honest John Kelly.Baseball was in its swaddling clothes when he got into the game in 1871.He was the catcher of the old New York Eagles during, 1871, 72 and °73.Tn 1871 he played with the Flyaways.During the season of "76 he caught Will White with the Binghamton Crickets.White was About the only pitcher of consequence who wore glasses. He had great control of the ball, and he could land one over the plate whenever he wanted to, notwithstanding he was handicapped by weak eves During 1877-18 Kelly was with the Manchesters, of Manchester.DISCOVERED BIG BROVTIHERS.It was In the season of 1879 that Kelly organized the Syracuse Barts, with Mtke Dorgan, McCormick and other players who became famous as my chief attractions. In 1880 he organized the New York Baseball Club, which was variously known as Kelly's Nine, Kelly's Killers and the Manhattan Terrors.Brouthers, one of the greatest batters that ever stepped up to a plate.war given his first engagement by Kelly, He was a great ball player even as a youngster, and was of the improving kind.Honest John began umpiring in 1880 when the National League was represented by clubs from Boston, Chicago.Providence, Troy, Philadelphia, Netroit, Cincinnati and Cleveland. He umpired Na- tlonal League games for three years, then became connected with the American Association, and after being on the staff of umpires of that establishment for three years ! returned to the League.Kelly was the first to suggest the double umpire system, and the first to umpire a game of ball while stationed behind the pitcher's box.e was also the first to umpire a game from behind second base.He had very little trouble In securing proper behaviour from e players. It seems to me the old line players had more respect for the umpire than the players of the present.MOST UNIQUE BALI, PLAYER.The most unique character In baseball ?Oh.an ‘Leary, whole lock.O'Leary was a devout Catholic, and used to make the sign of the cross whenever he went to bat.He considered that it gave him luck.1 followed his career after he left the old Manchester with a great deal of interest, and was glad to note that he met with considerable success.Ile drifted to Indianapolis and organized what was known as O'Leary's Nine.He had a good battery in McKeon and Keenan, and a clever Int of infielders and outfielders.‘Twas a hard hitting aggregation, too, and O'Leary had about all of the independent baseball clubs cinched to death. There was flerce rivalry between the cluba representing Ohlo and Indiana cities in those days, and O'Leary made them all nok cheap until he stacked up against the old Terre Haute Blues.I belleve Terre Hottentrts are still talking about the victory achiéved over O'Leary's up to that time invincible team by the home club.WENT THE WRONG COURSE.Dan O'Leary has been made the central figure in many a good story told about the palmy days of baseball.I think the funniest thing that ever happened on the diamond was the break made by the gen- lal Pan during the season of 1884.He was playing in Cincinnati with the Union As- soclatinn baseball club at the time.A very close game wes in progress, and O'Leary, after making a three-base hit, made a break for third base.Of course he was retired by the umpire, and when he discovered his error, O'Leary's antics were enough to make even the players who lost by his mistake, shake with laughter.have known horses to be disqualified for going over the wrong course on a race track.but that was the only time I ever knew a Laseball player to get ‘set back’ for a similar offence.O'LEARY'S CLEVER "STALL." When Justus Thorner, of the Brewing Company.of Cincinnati, ok control of the club in that city.Dan O'Leary was the captain of the team One day, after Billy Harbidge had won a close game with a timely hit, he expressed a longing for a glass of beer.‘You shall have a bucket full.my bay," responded the captain.* But as luck would have it, Thorner was tn the players’ dressing room when a boy came in with an immense growler, and the use of intoxicants had been taboced.“Here's your beer,” sald the young an.‘‘Bee®' thundered O'Leary.‘Wh stupld fellow, didn't I tell you to gel a bucket of mllk for the boys ?Beer, In- ea ! training, and, save for light exercise, will do nothing more until they face one another in the arena of the Coney lsland Sporting Club on Friday night. They have worked hard for the contest, and will probably prove to be in excellent condition. Some doubts have been expressed as to the form of Jeffries, as he has only done about seven weeks’ work for the fight, but his manager, Billy Brady, and trainers, Tommy Ryan and Billy Delaney, unite in declaring at he is in entirely satisfactory shape. He himself asserts that he is satisfied that he 1s stronger and better than he was on the night when he met Bob Fitzsimmons in the same ring and defeated him.On the other hand, there is no doubt about the conditien of Sharkey. He began work while in California early last summer and has kept pegging away at it ever since. He is ambitious ta be the champion pugilist of the world in his class, and does not want the matter of condition to stand in his way.His trainers, Tim McGrath and Bo trong, and his manager, Tom O'Rourke, have been compelled to watch him to guard against going over the mark where he would be strong. As it is, he is im nearly perfect form. The eve of the contest sees both of the men supremely confident. Both are calm end will to the fray as veterans into action.Thousands of dollars have been wagered upon the outcome of the fight.Jefiries remains the favourite, and the prevailing odds are ten to eight, although some money is placed at shorter terms than that.It was expected that the flood of Sharke money that came sweeping into town earl- jer in the week would make the terms even by the call of time on Friday night, but men who follow the books and make a business of financial risks of a sporting nature are to-night predicting that Jeffries will maintain his lead in betting favour. The house promises to be the largest that ever gathered for a pugilistic encounter in New York or anywhere else in this country. The sale of seats so far has been tremendous, and if it continues the house will be sold out.The boxes near the stage went at 835 a piece, while the seats near the ring command from $15 to 825.General admission is to cost $5, and it is expected that the size of the gate expressed in dollars will be close to $100,000.Fhe articles of agreement under which Jeffries and Sharkey will fight call for 25 rounds. They will battle for 66 2-3 of the gross receipts, of which the winner will receive 75 per cent.It is said that had Jeffries fought last Friday night he would have been unable to do himself justice. The Californian himself believes that the extension of time was a point in his favour. He certainly looked well vesterday during his exercise work, which was of a trying character. He punch: ed the ball, had a six-round boxing bout with “Tommy” Ryan on the lawn, wrest led with Roeber, and played handball. At the conclusion of his day's work he looked in fine shape and showed no indications of the tired feeling which is so characteristin of the untrained athlete.A physician ex: amined Jeffries’ health, and found it perfectly sound.Jeffries gave no expression of opinion as to how long the fight would last.He said his style of fighting would be governed entirely by that employed by Bhar ey.“It may be a short fight” he added, “and it may be a long one, but when it is all over I'll collect the failed in the Venezuelan dispute * because the award appearcd to be a com: promise.lt is now said that Mr.Justice Brewer has béen interviewed in Paris on the subject and that he verities the compromise theory. That 1s, the judges were * mot agreed as to the true boundary, some thinking thet first discovery should be the governing principle, while others were more impressed by actual occupation und settlement.© The upshot was, of course, that they compromised, and thus reached @& upanimous award. The New York Post defends this course. It 1s “the usual course,” it says “in nearly all trials by jury w civil actions, and not fmfrequently in criminal vases.Ît 19 also the proper course and the only one by which society and government can Le ad- Ministered.litigation, whether on a large or on & small scale, must be got out of the way to make room for other htigation and other human affairs. Therefore, compromise is not only allowable in such matters, but is indispensable.” More than that, the Post 1s frankly glad that Britain “won her case,” thus secunng the control of à large part of the gold mines.IL says: This was to be destred in the interest of civilization.‘lhuse gold mines, according to all accounts, can be work- at a profit onlv under a stable government. Not only must the govern ment of the region where they are situ: ated be that of a civihzed and enlight- éned country, but the approaches to it must be under like control. At the time when the United States was in a spasm over this question, and when these gold mines were figuring in the press as the prize tor which Great Bre taux was chietly contending letters came from American miners there say At tHüjr interests and timse of all € ) ucers epended on.the t ot and confirmation of British control: that if the region were turned over to Venezuela, their property would be exposed to depredation, «pa iation and confiscation, and that thev might as well abandon the country af once. From all this, it would appear that arbitration really achieved in this Venezuelan vase a most conapicuous success. It removed b dangerous question from the pale of war; it brought the valuable gold lands in dispute under the control of the Government most likely to permit and protect their best.development; 1 ps have Le Ce Ru Etre ps rontalned,
