Toronto, July 26.—The various ramifications of the case that is being work- "| ed up against H.H.Holmes, the alleged murderer of Nellie and Alice Peit- zel, are being followed with much interest here.This much is certain, no matter what opposition there is, the Ontario Government, jealous of its reputation for the administration of justice, will try and have Holmes brought here for trial.Crown Attorneys Dewart and Curry met yesterday with reference to‘ the charges of murder against Holmes.As a result of their conclusions, tective Cuddy has sworn out two separate warrants, charging Holmes with the murder of Etta Alice Peitzel and of Nellie Peitzel.The authorities of Philadelphia were the issuance of the warrants and of the intention to ask for bis extradition.‘Attorney-General’s will “take the matter up, and spare no effort to have Holmes extradited and placed upon trial.The latest information received by the Detective Depertment re from is- trict Attorney Graham, of the Quaker City, intimated _that, should Flolmes’ extradition be asked for, he would, in all probability, be surrendered.The charge of having murdered B.F.Peitzel has been formulated in Philadelphia, but has not been presented to the Grand Jury, pending the action of the Canadian of- cials and the return of Detective Geyer.It has been understood that the city Flom nting (he strongest case aga ing bia would have the privilege of try- him.For his final decision on this paint.District Attorney Graham, of biladelphia, is awaiting the final report of Detective Set, to be when he reaches Philadelphia.-made While = this city, AE Caprese opinion that ger here than in either or Chicago, snd that it was his in- report to the District Attorney.Strenuous efforts are being made by the Chicago Police to put together a stron urder, but the Phila- his.prisoner should be posed of as quickly as ible, and since the ware rants have b issued here, it is more than likely that Detective Cuddy will leave in a few days to try to bring Holmes to this city.Philadelphia, Jhly 26.—(Press despateh.) —District Attorney Graham is much pleased with the turn affairs have taken in Toronto.He believes that the result of the deliberations of the coroner's jury at Toronto is equivalent to a conviction of Holmes in the criminal courts.It is now almost certain that Holmes will be taken to Canada to answer there for the bloody deeds, which is confidently believed he cœmmitted in Toronto last November.Although there has been some talk of a requisition from the Chicago authorities for Holmes no papers have yet been received from the Bite ci With reference to the Toronto it is stated, however, that it will “re quire at least two months before accused can be extradited.Holmes’ lawyer, Shoemaker, decided that his client was.not afraid to face any charge the Canadian authorities had to make of extradition is just as difficult, from the Canadian jurisdiction as it is to get a man from the United States, and if the To- ronte authorities failed to convict Holmes, which be was sure they d, there might be a fight before tho man is returned to this city.Chicago, July 2.—More proof was found yesterday that Julia L.Connor is dead, and that she was made away with by H.H.Holmes.It was determined that she disappeared before June 9, 1892, an important factor in the search for her.MEDICAL.\\ SICK KEADAGHE Positively cared by these Little Pills, ‘They also relieve Distress from Indigestion and Too Hearty Eating.A perfect remedy for Dizziness, Nausea, Drowsi.pese, Bad Taste in the Mouth, C.æted Tongue Pain in the Side, TORPID LIVER They Regulate the Bowels.Purely Vegetable, | man Pili.Small Dose.a Small price, __ du CC pes See es eee te se Ce copie 2 + ae TT A 4 A “Department | a nr aren hat gtd Ps had St.But on Juns 5, 1893, wrote to ber brother-in-law, Ira Yantie, of 320 Wardobe avenue, au- keaha, Wis, gi him a fictitious address as to her w in ; Niagara Falls, Ont.July 26.—The old Vstoric village of Drummondville, known as Niagara Falls village in business virvles, was ali alive yesterday and was dressed in gala day attire.Every business place and private.residence was decorated with flags and bunting.With _ the many large maple trees spreading out their large branches, spanning the | beautiful village streets, the place presented a pretty picture.The village Council declared the day a civic holiday, so its residents could fully take part in the anniversary the Battle of lLundy's Lane and the unveiling of the monument erected by the Dominion Government to perpetuate the memory of the brave heroes who fell in the defence of their homes on that eventful day in the history of Canada.eople from every direction poured into the village all day, and when th ceremonies commenced fully five thousand crowded around the speakers’ stand, which faced the monument.Several prominent people were on the platform, Amongst them being His Honor ieutenant-Governor Kirkpatrick.Hon.dam Brown and daughter.liamilton; Oliver A.Howland, Torunto; Ven.Archdeacon Houston and Mayor Hanan, Nia- ara Falls; Mrs.Henrotin, Chicago, THs; ames A.Lowell, M.P., and Wm.Ger- wan, M.P.P.of Welland: Alex.Muir, Toronto; Col.G.T.Denniston.Toronto; Miss Fitzgibbon, granddaughter of the hero of Beaver Dams; Captain Fitz- gibbon.The president, Canon Bull, of-the“Tocal society.intro duced Lieut.-Governor Kirkpatrick, who had consented to act as chairman.Upon His Honor arising, it was the signal for deafening applause.His Honor gracivusly thanked the large assembiage for the tribute and opened the ceremonies in an eloquent address, alluding to the bravery of the men who so ably defended our country from invaders, who had came over Lo place the country in which the good.loyal Canadians had hewed homes for themselves under the American Republic's flag.He said : “ We to-day are assembled here to perpetuate the memory of their valorous deeds by unveiling this monument, * lately erected by the minion Guvern- ment, and not to show any hatred ta our neighbors across the border.Since that bloody carnage we have lived peace- fuily together and both countries are making rapid strides of prosperity and progress.And he could voice the thoughts of every Canadian, that they wished to remain so.While Canadians were proud of American prosperity and progress, the same -(Canadians desired the Americans should so regard our advancement.His Honor went into details of the bravery of both sides.Both were of the Anglo Saxon race.He had to especially allude to the indomitable pluck of the Canadians who fought against such odds after a weary trip from Niagara to mest the foe entrenched in these sacred grounds; and who fought in bloody battle Lill after midnight.Nor must the brave men jof Chateaugav, who did so much for Canadians, be forgotten.The Canadian Government in erecting these tributes, were doing their duty.speaker then introduced Col.G.Dennison, of Toronto, who was am in bebalf of the Dominion Government, instead of Neoretary State Montague, who was: unavoidably “absent on account of sickness in his family.The Colonel, after expressing his regrets and apologising for the absence of ihe Secretary of State, launched out in a very able and appro- riate address.He traced the course of ritish and Canadian forces from Detroit to.Montreal, paying high tributes to Canadian and British pluck and integrity.He knew of no better way of the present Canadian generation tu perpetuate the memories of those eventful days and brave men, that are of so much account in ‘Cimadian history, than to érect monuments on the sacred spots.He alluded to the brilliant deeds of General Brock, in eloquent words.After this, accom ied by His Honor l.ieur.- sovernor Kirpatrick and others, Col.Dennison walked over to the monument a few yards opposite, and drew down the bunting that covered the stone.The Niagara Falls Band struck up the National Anthem, when a mighty shout of applause rent the air.President C.R.McCullough of the Ca- He a ap ring of it © d hardly be natural if it were otherwise.The baby's health and hap- y babies are generally iealthy, happy mothers.piness depend on the mother’s.The mother’s condition during gestation particularly exerts an influence on the “whole life of the child.Impure blood, weakness and nervousness in the mother are pretty sure to t themselves in the child.f a woman is not careful at any other time, she certainly should be during the period preliminary to parturition.It is a time when greatest care is necessary, and Nature will be the better for a little help.Even strong, well women, will find themselves feeling better, their time of labor shortened and their pains less- encd if they will take Dr.Picrce’s Favorite tion.To those whom troubles peculiarly feminine have rendered in any d weak, it will prove a veritable blessing.It is & good general tonic for the whole system; a little lower price would command the market, both at home and abroad, and before long the, grain.and cotton growers would have nothing but dearly-bought experience to show for their $100 subscription to this gigantio combine.unless the history of somewhat similar attempts amongst farming communities fails to repeat itself.LEGAL CONFISCATION.For years those who haven't a million have been endeavoring to prevent others from amassing more than that sum.The favorite method is by legal confiscation, but es yet no scheme has been evolved that appears to meet the ‘requirements of the cass, alibough by!tbe graduated fooomy tax plan in vogue throughout millionaires are partielly ; bli by names aa pul ic nu and a public peril, and be accordin, forfeited into The United States Trota.ury." However ohimerical Capt.Rodney's plan may appear, it is worthy of note that it has the approval of severas distinguished statesmen and others, who, it is scarcely necessary to add, have not yet become bloated millionaires and whose expectations in that direction are remarkably limited.SIR OLIVER MOWAT, The civilities extended to the Ontario Premier in Scotland will not be resented by his political opponents, who recognize that he has had a distinguished career, and deserves in old age a generous recognition of his success.If Scotland could be made so attractive to Sir Oliver that he would like to stay there altogether no protest would emanate from the Ontario Opposition.They are naturally fond of him, but are not selfish enough to wish to deprive him of the pleasure of residence abroad, if he feels disposed to try it.And if the Privy Council, in a moment of weakness, should decide that the provinces have the power to prohibit the liquor traffic, the Ontario Premier might do worse than resolve to stay over there end pass the Government “on to his present lieutenants.AS a practical issue in Ontario politica prohibition would break up Sir Oliver's party into its two component parts of ‘temperance men and the liquor interest, and make matters electorally very unpleasant, indeed.But the Premier's luck has al- way3 stood him in good stead, and will probably not desert him: mow.One question we would ask of him, in the interest of all struggling politicians: How does he manage to stay in power?Since Mr.Blake turned out the Sandfield Macdonald Ministry away back in 1871 and called Mr.Mowat from the bench to take ‘his’ place the province has known only one Premier.In all this time the Ontario Opposition has had three leaders, Sir M.C.Cameron, the present Chief Justice Meredith, and now, appropriately enough, a Marter.They all waited in vain, for Sir Oliver passed victorious through six general elections, and appears to be ready for a seventh.Such a continuous term’ of office is enough -to make any politician's mouth water.Other Premiers will naturally wish to have the prescription, and Lord Salisbury himself cannot be above asking the colonial statesman how it is done.One hears it said often that alternats rule by both political parties is good for a community, but, strangely enough, we never hear this doctrine from Sir Oliver, who never even hints that a change would be desirable.That other Oliver in British politics ruled until he died, and it seems as if the Ontario Premier had made up his mind to do the same.But whether he rules or retires, long may he live.The Gatling gun is likely to be shortly superseded by a new invention which fires more rapidly and with more accurate aim.If these vast improvements in weapons continue, the battles of the future will be short, sharp and decisive, for both sides ‘will likely be entirely annihilated in double-quick time.This may rob war of its glories, but not of its horrors.Toronto is not beggaring itself in entertaining distinguished guests this year.In the first six months just $62 has been expended for this purpose.Fither the number of distinguished visitors to the Queen City is limited, or their entertainment is SUICID DE FOR LOVE Binghamton, N.Y., July 26 —Volney B.Barrett, of the firm of Barrett Bros, music dealers, and one of the best known business men this city, shot himself through the heart a after eleven o'clock yesterday.Developments tend to show that a love affair may have had to do with the suicide.Mr.d been very attentive to a young lady prominent, in society circles, and, it is said, saw her riding with another young man.He called at the home of the young lady before the shooting.FELL 138 FEET, Chicago, July %.— While seventy-five workmen of the Ferris Wheel were watching T Downs, of Minneapolis.one of the "most skilful of t their num- r, as he attempted to rig a pulley one hundred and thirty-eight feet from the ground, last evening, they heard him scream and saw him glide from the slip- "pery axle and plunge headlong to the grou His deaths w was instantaneous.THE ARGONAUT CREW.London, July 26.—R.“a.Muntz, of the Argonaut crew, of Toronto, will leave England on August 15.His brother, A.Muntz, sailed for New York on the Fenton on Wednesday.E.A.Thompson, who rowad for the London cup yesterday, will sail on the Britannic” pext Wednesday.His brother, F.H.Thom son, has already arrived on the other side FIRE AT ST.ANDREWS, QUE, (Esveux, Lo Lhe Star.) tower at the time Durant was in church before King saw him.Durant left the church about five o'clock, and she might have gone there after that hour.NEW YORK’S SUICIDE.Lillian Low's Body Identified by Her Father— She Left Him in March rch Last.New York, July 20.- 26.—The body of the girl who committed suicide, found at Heights by two boys on Tuesday morning, and which was taken to the morgue, has been identified as that of Lillian Low.The father, James Low, jr.went to the morgue and identified the body.His daughter has been away from him since March 10, when he was sick with the grippe.He had called to see her where she was living, but she refused to return to him, sileging tha that he had treated her cruelly ws lawyer called on her to plead with her to return to her father, but she refused.” Miss Hansen, with whom Li.lian boarded, ca.led at the lawyer's office on Tuesday, and said she feared that something had happened to the girl, as she had not been home over-night.w says he never treated the girl badly, but.on the contrary, did everything he could far her.Mr.Low is a son of James Low, president of the United States Trust Co., and a brother of Joseph T Low, head of the firm of Joseph T Low & Co.dr goods merchants, of 66 Worth street.He is a brother-in-law of Oiiver T.Harri- man, a wealthy banker.James Low, sr., was once very wealthy.but lost $4.600,000 in Wall street.Mr.Low de- acribes himseif as a poor man, though his income is sufficient to keep him comfortably without an occupation.“M daughter Lilian,” he said to Captain Pickett, ‘’was born in Aix-les-Bains, France.I was.born in Louiseville, Ky., but twenty-five years ago I went to France, and at Nice fell in love witha French woman named Josephine Rai- mon, and lived with her.She represented to me that sho was a widow, but I aftervards found she had a husband liv- She bore me six children, of whom ian was the last.The others she ert in infaney.————— CHURCH FIRED IN 3 PLACES.Desperate Attempt to Destroy 12 When Filled With People Attending a Funeral.land, Me, .—The funeral gress when an.attempt was to set tire to the Cathedra: wy ths Immaculate Conception.There was a great audience present at one time, but most of the crowd had gone when Mrs.John O'Connor discovered that the chape: was full of smoke.À fire was in progress in two places in the chapel, and Fast outside there was a larger blaze.‘“l'he fire was soon under control, but the beautiful chapel was very much defaced and damaged by smoke.The fire A front of the altar was started in material a a rent! saturated with oil.” Prayer boo! torn up to ki the fire.An attem t was also made to burn the Cathedral ile Rev.Father O'Callaghan’s body wae lying in state.DR.MAGKIE'S - the deteriorating effects of Eastern civilization by lolling about their mock sylvan retreat or peclining lazily in the sun.There has been one exception to this passive appearance of .indolencs and de- pasive 3 unworthy of the traditional ner BY of wild bison Jncestry.The ugli- Éoking buffaio in the herd, a crea- tore of gigantic size, has always been an uneasy, restless, quarrelsome fellow, a terror to his companions, wnom he dominated and d at his own eccentric will.He was the bull iy of the walk, as it were.All others ha to budge at his pleasure and surrender possesion of the softest and choicest spots in the enclosure whenever he chose to demand it.To the keepers he was known as Bill and by thom he was dreaded almost as much as by his own associates.With some of the others the keepers have become tolerably familiar, but nobody has ever thought of making a pet of Bill, Like all bullis Bill included among his execrabls qualities the twin vices of selfishness and greed.He was always filling himself with the choicest of the food, tho tenderest grasses, and his conduct at all times, particularly, it seemed, when crowds of visitors were gazing thréugh the fences, was such as to disgust any gentlemanly buffalo.The keepers noticed early in Lhe morning that Bill was ina more than usually disagreeable m He swaggered around the place, pushing about, disturbing various sociable little roups of the more companionaple fol- ows, and taking particular delight in forcing any one who settled himself in an especiaily agreeable place for peaceful re, repose to get up and tle for other quarters.It was about the time when every tody except guards, keepers and the lower animals are su d to be engaged in religious worship that te ne garden was startled by a chorus of bellows and snorts from the buffalo yard.All the keepers and the few visitors who had entered rounds rushed to the scene.There, in ne fem middle of tho enclosure, & Bill, his huge head close to ths ground, which he was pawing in an ugiy manner, while bis tail swished in the air like a whip.In a semicircle, but at-a respectful distance were half a dozen of the largest members of the herd, algo digging into the earth and snorting belligerently, while the others of the | colony were gathered in oné corner, with their shaggy whiskers almost touching the ground, but discrestly contenting themselves with bellowing at the top of their pacious lungs.It was evident that the b bully had # rovoked his usually meek comrades to open rebellion.Active lios- -tilities were not long delayed.While Bill stood half- contemptuous- iy returning the angry snorts of his enemies, a large buffalo detached himself {from ths semi circle and approached the big fellow slowly; and apparently de- desirous of digging his way to through the earth with his nose.When about six feet distant, with the big glaring eye-balls of both animals fastened upon each.other, the new champion sprang forward and their thick heads met with & crash like simultaneous bangs o drums of a scors of military bands.The new oc pion re- colied ‘before the superior strength of Hill, but he was game, and he returned to the attack.For more than five minutes the com- patents hurled against each other,their borns frequently ked, and each striving i all his sinowy strength Lo force up the.gther’'s bead and à get in à ive blow with the keen horns ‘in a ash of the neck.ily forcing his antagonist the fence vies, another large buffalo detached himself from ithe semi circle, mendous ‘neck, layin the hea flesh and coloring the the open.mans red Mt was then that Bill showed what al- vas n w most ail bullies abow when hard besst, BC: ackson, KT.Holloomb, M BC; Jame, 3 the others MEETINGS AND AMUSEMENTS, | ALWAYS A GOOD GAME! Southampton, July 26.—The United States cruiser Columbia, which for several days past has been taking on a su ply of coal of an especially high grade, satled from this port at 1.20 p.m.today on her record run to New York.Vashingtoz, July 26.—The orders to Capt.Sumner that the Columbia be hrought over from Southampton at the best speed she is capable of making, directs attention to the possibilities of ships of the Columbia and Minneapolis (Pe, maintaining the records of some the transatlantic liners which monthly css at an average rate of speed of not less than 20 knots an hour.Naval official differ regarding the probable performance of the Columbia on her return voyage to New York, engineer officers asserting that she will easily average 19 knots an hour, while line officers are very dubious of this, and back the coal capacity of the vessel.ship, they admit, is now in first-class condition after her docking, and should able to make as fast time now as she made on her trial off the Massachusetts coast, when the official record gave her nearly twenty-three knots for their opinions with statements regarding e a four hours’ run.Her machinery has been worked down to a point where it runs as easy as a sewing machine, and everything seems favorable for the quickest long-distance voyage ever made by an American war vessel, if the coal supply holds out.If her bunkers were capable of holding five hundred more tons of coal, the crack cruiser, it is claimed by engineer officers, could maintain for the entire voyage: twenty knots, and thus beat most of the transatlantic liners touching at Southampton.It is not believed, however, that Capt.Sumner will attempt to get more than eighteen knots out of the ship, and if she can carry this for seven days the performance will be all that.the department expects.Another point against her is that she is drawing three feet more water than when she made her fast trial.GRAND ORANGE LODGE.The Programme for the Halifax Meeting.t (Special to the Star.) Cornwall, Ont., July 26.—This morning about four o'clock the barge Kildonnan, had just entered lock 17, the sécond lock at the foot of ths canal, and the gates ‘were shut.Thz surge of water parted her stern line; her headway could not be stopped, and she ran into the upper ates tearing them from their hinges.fen, being thrown against the lower gates, sha tore them out also.The Kildonnan suffered but little damage, and her crew managed to mcor her in the basin between the two locks, where she now lies.The tug Dunbar was tied up abova lock 17, waiting to take the Kildonnun and Glenora up to lock 20, and ths rush of water parted her line and carried her through stern first.Her steam pipe was broken and the engineer, Pender-" ast, narrowly escaped scalding to death.; The barge Glenora, which was moored with four heavy hawsers, was carried down also; she struck the north wall at the head of the lock and smashed in her stern and now lies wedged across the mouth of the lock; with her back broken, from all appearances.The pontoon, John Page, used for lifting lock gates, was tied up in ths basin.It also parted from the moorings and was carried bodily over the gates of lock 16, restin in the lock.Her upper works broke off and floated down the river.One of the upper gates is standing against the wall of leck 17, another is in the middle of the basin, and the other two are piled up on top of each other on the upper ates of lock 16.Both appear to be bad- y sprung.Yn the basement ar: four old gates, disabled at the time of the Ocean smashing lock 17.a few weeks ago, and not since removed.The steamers Hamilton and Bohemian are moored at the lower whar{.To all appearances the break is worse than that made by the Ocean, but the engineer in charge.Mr.Wheeler, says the work of repsir will be easier, and that he expects to ba able.to lock through again on Sunday, by fixing up the gates that wera disabled previously and using one or two others, which are now undergoing repairs.The Stormont mill is running as usual, with steam.The Canada mill has its weave shed running, but will not be able to run the whole mill.as one of the engines is being repaired.The woollen mill is also running" by steam.Mack's mill and Hodge's woollen mill, which’ depend on water, are entirely shut down.The smashing of the locks in the Cornwall canal and the subsequent interruption of traffic will be felt in Montreal to some extent.The grain shipments, however, are not as a rule large.The Kingston and Montreal Forwarding Company have now at Ogdensburg 20,- 000 bushels grain on its way to this city.It was thoughi this morning that it might be necessary to ship it to Montreal by rail.VALKYRIE IPS STEEL SPARS.Made of Nickel Steel :Galvanized—- Will Lighten and Stiffen Her Up.Boston, July 26.—The '‘Herald’s” Gour- ock correspondent, in his cable of yesterday's Valkyrie events, says: The aur- ‘prise of the day was the leaking out of the fact that she will have a set of steel spars, which are much lighter than the pine ones.This will! reduce the weights aloft quite as much, if not more, than the Defender gains in her aluminum topsides: The steel spars have just been completed, and are greatly reduced in size from the former ones.They are made of nickel-steel, galvanized.The mast is round and smooth, and is over a ton lighter than the pine mast.It is just 105 feet over all, and 22 inches in diameter, which is 31-2 inches less than her Oregon mast.The other spar dimensions are: Top mast, 56 feet and 191-2 feet in the doublings ; boom; 1251-2 feet; bowsprit, 43 feet over all.From fors- sight of mast to outer cranse iron on the bowaprit is 80 feet.The spinnaker - is 80 feet.and the sail spread is nearly 14,000 square feet.She now B7 tons of lead in her keel, and with reducin weights aloft she will he fully sti enough, so her crew think.Messrs.Cran- field and Sycamore think the Valkyrie will show up faster than she did when racing against the Britannia.‘They say the fender, in their opinion, in the weather she had, did not beat the Vigilant enough.A WILL CONTEST.Dispute Regarding the Bequest of the Late Mr, Tapp.(Special to the Star.) and with the help of a ladder and ro yle was forcibly removed, and, not without auch obatreperousness on his part, conveyed to drier but less airy uarters at the Central Police Station.e was sentenced next day to s fine of five shillings or three days’ imprisonment.Some of the best prices realized’ at a recent sale of Burns and Scott manu- acripts were for letters and lyrics of the author of ‘’Tam.o’ Shanter.”” Por one of his poems of two folio pages “There was an auld Man and he had bad Wife,” £24 was paid, and for a single ballad of twenty-eight lines, "Fy us a’ to Kirk,” £16 Il kiss thee oi brought ten puinoas.while two autograph poems of eighty lines brought £30, and 8 letter to his friend Ainslie £23.At the same sale a letter from Sir Walter Scott to the Duke of Buckingham, referring to the.Bannatyne Club of Scotland, June, 1827, sold for £4 15s;
