RUFFALO, N.Y., June 3.—Buffalo again defeated Montreal.Superior batting abilities was the main cause of the Bisons’ vie- tory. They out-hit their opponents and hut when hits meant runs.Lee was rather easy for the locals. They hit him bard in the opening innings and then let up for four inuings, but in the eighth they went after him viciously and drove the ball around the Jot.Lee was unable to stop the hitting, and in addition he was a tnfle wild. The inability of Montreal to land effec tively on Gray was the sole cause of their defeat. The Royals were unable to ht “Chummy” when hits were needed.Gray kept the Montreals out of dangers way all the time. When Montreal did hit, it was after two were out and not the re motest chance of scoring. In the ninth Raub doubled to left and scored an Kelly's single. These were the only hits on him in succession.CAUGHT OFF THE BAG.Stafford opened the game with a long triple to centre. His hit was nullified by | Shaw, who caught him off third after the second strike out.Raub had a chance, but he threw it away by too danng run- ‘ming after he was given a life on Brain's error., For five innings the Royal men went out in succession.Fast fielding prevented the Montreal plavers to occupy the sacks.Gett- man robbed several plavers of hits by making sensational catches. In’ the seventh the ice was broken. After dwell flew to Milligan, Dooley got a short hit to centre.Johnson got first on an error by Connaugh- ton.Shaw threw to catch Stafford, who ran for Mooley.but the hall went to centre field.Getuman returned the ball poorly to third base and it went inst, the grandstand.Stafford scored, Johnson ran over third and Gray got the ball and slammed it to Shaw, who threw Johnson out at third.Sheehan was out of the game.because of a lame arm.A high wind was blowing across the diamond and Sheehan could not get the ball across against it.Stafford went to third and Johnson was put in at second.Johnson and Quinn worked together nicely, participating in two double plays.Kelly had a bad day in left field. He tried to capture short flies to him.with the resalt that they bounded past him and lengthened out the singles. The score follows: BUFFALO.AB R.RH PO.AR Gettman, cf.:.3 2-1 5 4 hl Rrain, 3 ., .5 1 2 $% 2 i Grimshaw.1b .5 2 3 8 1 0 Lynch.If.oo.3 0 2 4 0 0 Atherton, 8 .….… 5 1 1 2 0 60 Milligan.rf.3 0 0 2 0 o Connaughton, as.3 3 2 1 1 1} Shaw, c.… .… ….#4 6 3 2 1 © Gray.p.+s oe .….4 1 1 0 1 1 Totals .….….5 9 4 T ¢ 4 MONTREAL ABR BH PO AR Stafford.3 .4 0 2 0 2 0 Shearon, rf.4 0 0 1 0 0 Raub, C.co es esos $ 1 1 1 1 9 Kelly, Lf.ov os.….3 0 2 4 0 0 Odweil, c.f.….….….….4 060 1 2 0 © Dvooiey.1b .… ….4 1 1 6 0 9 Johnson, Ib.… « 0 0 4 3 0 Quinilan, s.s.… .3 0 0 4 56 0 Lee, p.….ev ee ase 3 0 06 0 2 2 Totals.cove ve eee 8 3 7 M 13 = By innings— Buffalo .… +.….-.21201003x—9 Montreal .….000000101—3 SUMMARY.Earned runs.Buffalo 7, Montreal 1.Left on bases, Buffalo 5 Montreal 5 First base on balls, off Gray 1.off Lee 5.Struck out, bv Gray à by Lee 1.Three-base hits, Gett- man, Grimshaw 2 Two-base hita, Shaw, Lynch and Raub.Sacrefice hit.Gettman.Stolen bases, Atherton and Connaughton.Double plays, Johnson to Quinlan to ‘Dooley, Quinlan to Johnson, Umpires, Rinn and Murphy.Time, 1.50.Attendance 3500.At Toronto— R.H.E.By Innings— Toronto .-@20101000-6 u 2 Rochester ees ….000100200—3 8 0 At VWorcester- Ry innings— Worcester.….….….0160000—1 5 1 Providence.….0000000—0 4 2 At Jersey City— By Innings— Newark .000105033—11 12 3 Jersey City .000002033—7 1 1 EASTERN LEAGUE STANDING.per Club, Yon.Lost.ceut.Buffalo .s +.0.18 14 ea Rochester .….>.2146 + 1 560 Toronto .+.+.16 13 552 Providence .….… ….15 14 517 Jersey City .….+.….15 15 50d Worcester,-.…. Mr.Drummond in a short speech said this resolution had been framed by the members of the Board of Trade of Montreal, as busi men, anxious for the per manent saf and solidity of the Empire. It was presented in a spirit of loyalty and he was glad to say that the loyalty ot Canada could not be questioned. He referred to the traditional free trade policy of Eng: land, and argued that the adoption of an inter-imperial trade preference was the best way of attaining the objects of the free traders.; It was time Britain gave her protectionist rivals a taste of their own medicine. The question of food supply was a vital one to Great Britain. He quoted statistics showing the present dependence of the United Kingdom upon foreign nations for her food supply. He believed that under inter-imperial preferential trade the Col onies would in 15 years be able to furnish all the food supplies Great Britain needed. This policy would increase British imnugra- tion to the colonies and would tend to the strengthening and consolidation of the Em- PTE THE MOTION SECONDED.The motion was seconded by Mr.Cock- shutt, of Brantford, who denounced the Manchester School of Trade policy.Great Britain's salvation was her colonies.Without them ehe would not be n first class power for a year.Britain should, therefore, adopt a policy calculated to benefit and strengthen them. There was no policy so potent in the direction of unity as one of material interesta.; Mr.E.G.Henderson, of Windsor, approved the resolution.but thought it did not go far enough. It said nothing as to what steps should be taken to give effect to the policy advocated. He u that the following clause of the Toronto Board's re i incorpora ; solution >.be TP resolved.that the Prime Minister of Canada be requested to urge at the Imperial Conference the securing of a Roval Commission com of representa tives of Great Britain and the Colonies to investigate conditions and to suggest such preferential treatment of imports from the various parts of the Empire as shall be best calculated to insure the fullest benefits.Mr.Drummond consented to add this clause to the Montreal resolution.Considerable discussion tock place upon a point of order as to what was to be done vith the score of other resolutions on the same subject of which notice had n aub- mitted, some of which covered different aspects of the question. The chairman finally decided that the other rrsolutions must he moved as amendments to the Mon:- real resolution.CANADIAN PREFERENCE.Mr.Hathaway, of St.John, N.B., moved an amendment to the effect that the Canadian preferential of 33 13 per cent.be allowed only on goods imported through C'an- adian ports. It was not an amendment to the Montreal resolution, and Mr.Hathaway subsequently withdrew it for the prescnt.Mr.Geo.L.Mcl.agan, president of the Stratford Board of Trade, môved the following_amendment: “That preferences between the Mother land and the Colonies should be entirely voluntary, rather than the result of bargain: ing, and each independent Government strouid- ider- dnl tof ats ow people first.“That it is possible to continue the Canadian tariff preference in ite present form or modified, if need be, so that no interest in Canada need suffer thereby, and in the opinion of this conference, Britain would be serving the interests of the Empire by adjusting the prescnt tax on foodstuffs and levying any other duties that may be imposed in such a manner that importa from Canada and other colonies will have prefer ence over those from other nations, when this can be done without sacrifice of Itrit- ” ish intereste .Mr, feLagan believed bargaining would defeat the object desired. He pointed out that the Montreal: resolution gave no indication of how preferential trade should be brought about. The amendment was seconded by Mr.WW.Preston, of Stratford, who thought Canada should not go with her cap in hand.asking for favours.Mr.Andrew Pattullo.of Woodstock, considered it was necessary to indicate that Canada is willing to revise her fiscal policy in the interests of the Empire.Mr.McKay, Sault Ste.Marie, raid that a “[Féstrrenr.AILIFFS quo in the Montreal resolution. We do not go hat in band, but as a part of the Empire. He did not think the Stratford amendment was a fitting one.Mr.Russell, president of the Winnipeg Board of Trade, told what the West could do to supply the Empire with food Its.capacity would be vastly increased by a preference on the British market.Mr.Ferguson, of Stratford, objected that the Montreal resolution was not of an Im- rial nature. It only referred to Canada.{e believed Great Britain did not owe Canada anything.Mr.Campbell, Halifax, moved a further amendment that the words “and ’that representatives of other colonies be asked to join in this request,” be added to the Montreal resolution.Mr.C.A.Young, President of the Winnipeg grain exchange, supported the Montreal resolution and gave further information as to what Manitoba can do as an Imperial granary.Mr.P.B.Dumoulin, Quebec, thought that nothing should be done to prejudice our trade relations with the United States unless it is certain we shall denve greater advantages from Great Britain. He considered that our exports to Britain were ratisfactory enough and that we should rather seek to develop our exports to the United States.Mr.Hagedon, of Berlin supported the Montreal resolution.Mr.D.R.Vilkie, Toronto, suggested two amendments, one which linked the question of defence with that of trade, and substituting the word “differential” for “preferentini.” He argued that the question of defence was so bound up with the question of trade that they coutd not be considered separately, and he declared it was abject to asking for a preference for ourselver when what we really wanted was a differential duty against foreigners. It being one o'clock the Conference adjourned for lunch, the various su ested amendments remaining undisposed of hefo adjourning. It was decided in consequence of the immense amount of work to be done to hold night as well as day sessions.“ THOUSANDS OF NEW TOOLS FOR MEN ON THE HARBOUR FRONT.For many years, indeed, ever since the barbour of Montreal was a harbour and had men working on it with pick and shovel, it has been the custom of the men to supply their own tools. This is all to be changed, however, and the commissioners are to supply the necessary implements. The matter came up at the meeting of the Harbour Commissioners to-day.It appears that Mr.W.E.Doran, the newest member of the Board.has since his appointment, been visiting the works at different times and at the last meeting he remarked that the men were working with a very poor class of picks and shovels.* He thereïore moved that the Commissioners supply the tools in place of the men as had been the custom. The matter was left over until the meeting to-day when it was finally re- eolved to purchase 1,000 shovels, and 1.500 picks for the use of the 650 workmen now in the Trust's employ.Mr.Doran contended that it was ‘he principle of getting good work out of good tools and in this he had the support of the Mayor.: COMMISSIONERS NOT TO BLAME FOR DELAY.At the meeting of the Harhour Commis: sioners to-day a short letter was read fram the Hon.Mr.Tarte, respecting the complaint which the contractor had made regarding the ground being unsuitable for the driving of piles.judged, The letter, the Commissioners was written hefore the Minister of Public Works had received the Commissioners’ last couimunication on the subject. The entire matter, however, was one in which they had no hand as the Steel, Storage and Fle- veter Construction Company would deal directly with the Department of Publhe Works through the Government Engineer, Mr.A.St.Laurent.| In his letter the Minister of Public Works merely referred to the fact that a complaint had been made as to the state of the ground for pile driving, mentioning that the engincer, Mr.St.Laurent, would deal with the matter. The Commissioners congratulated themselves over the fact that no respansibility lay upon them.HETU CASE BEFORE THE COURTS TO-DAY.Rodolphe Hetu, the deputy returning offi- cer of poll No.37, in the St.James's Dhvi- sion election.was up before Judge Choquet at eleven o'clock to-day.when Mr.J.A.Deacarries, K.C.for the prosecution, de: clared that he had no more evidence .ta offer. The attorney for the defendant.Mr.H.St.Louis, asked until June 10 to decide upon what course he would follow. He declared that he would offer no evidence for the defence at the preliminary hearing. As the accused cannot have his trinl before the present term of the court, because the grand jury has been discharged, the judge agreed to the delay.and the matter wil) come up again Tuesday next.GREAT INTEREST IN THIS YEAR'S DERBY.Few Derby races of late vcara have crent- ed tbe interest which was created hy the present one in Montreal, and considering the popularity in England of the filly.Sceptre, the people who bet on the race came out retty well simply because they did not brrieve in a filly's ability to win at this time of the vear.and because they put thir money for place on old relinbles, Ard Patrick and Rising Ginna being backed for a -good—denl—In-all-abent-$8.000- were-bhet and the backers of Sceptre loat whont 2.000 of that sum, one man being credited with having lost about half of that amount.A Deserter Arrested.{Special to the Montreal Star.) listening to.The selections played were mostly of a patriotie character.Eng- lhsh, Scotch, French Canadian and Irish airs, being rendered in aplendid stvle Then the Scots hand struck up a medley of opera: tic selections, waltzes and cake walks, and to this music the crowds in the galleries darced and tip toed until one would have thought a big dancing competition was in progress.AN ANIMATED SCENE.On the oor of the Dnll Shed there was an animated scene.Fach battalinn had taken up its place opposite its armoury.and as viewed from above the blending of the colours formed a striking pwture There was life.tone and spirie in the Living pic ture which could not be reproduced on any canvas. With the quickenal heartbeats caused by the martial music and the general appearance of the troops came the thoughts of mulitary resources of the Empire of which these men formed a unit.and It was not surprising that the occasion evak- ed cheers from the spectators and from the militiamen, too.The bright scarlet of the Fusiliers shone out against the white tunics of the Scots, and behind these were the dark business like cvlours où the artillerymen.(mn the opposite side of the shed the natty nile.men of the 63th Battalion locked dapper and gay.and behind were the Highland Calers an their pretty Highland dress of grev. Then the Field Artilers and the Cavalrymen looked dashing enough to capture the hearts of all the fair ones, and the final touch was given by the neatly dressed boys of the Westmount Cadets. All these men bad been marched frm thew armories and remained there. The bands had also come out. While the soldiers and erowds were en- ovine the feast of music in the drill hall, Linet Cel Rov and the commanding offi cers of the regiments on parade were watching the starm extent as would permit of the evening's programme being carried out.The orderly returned and reported that the rain had stopped. This was enough for Cal Rev to decide that the parade should he held. But :t was considered unwise to allow the men to parade with rifles.Sn the companies were dismissed.rifles were put awav, and when the men again fell in ther carried side arms only.: Then the parade got
