[" FIVE HUNDRED PEOPLE PERISH A t A Pom — ER a VOL.XXXVI, No 143 3 The Monir MONTREAL, IN EAST RIVER, NEW YORK Poy The Steamer General Slocum With a Sunday School Excursion on Board ~ Catches Fire Between the High Rocks at Hell Gate.Vessel Could Not Be Beached and Hundreds, the Majority Probably Children, Jumped Overboard and Perished—The Vessel Became a Seething Furnace.New York, June 15.—Five hundred persons, mostly children, perished today by the burning of the excursion steamer General Slocum, near Hell Gate in the East River. The Slocum, having .on board the annual Sunday school excursion of St.Mark's German Lutheran Church of this city, was on her way up the river to resort on Long Island Sound. When just off about 125th street persons on shore saw smoke and flames spring from the upper part of the crowded steamer.A panic ensued on the boat almost instantly. The crowds on the forward deck, panic-stricken, began to spring overboard or to crowd to the afterpart of the boat. The screams of the terrified passengers could be heard on shore and hundreds of small boats immediately pulled off to the rescue.“ Owing to the rocks on either side of the channel at this point, it was impossible to beach the steamer. The captain stood to his post at the wheel and headed the vessel straight through Hell Gate for North Brother Island, where she went ashore in the shallow water.Several hundred feet of open water lay between the burning steamar and shore and many persons perished either in the water or on the burning vessel after she was beached. It was estimated that the steamer carried more than 2,000 persons. The General Slocum is the largest excursion steamer in these waters. She has plied for years to Rockaway Beach and could carry about 4,000 passengers. An eyefwitness who saw much of what happened to the boat, said: — “The sisamer’s whistle was blowing for assistance as she came up the river.| saw several persons jump into the watcr befor: she was headed for ths north-wes' sho- sible for those aboard of her to reach land, except by swimming.of North Brother Island.Mar position made it impos- 1 saw perhaps fifty or a children aboard.Nearly all belonged to 8t.Mark's German Lutheran Church Sunday School.Superintendent Rick- ard, of Bellevue Hospital.sent word to the cfficlais of the institutions of Ward's 1sland to send ail the doctors they could spare to the scene, and nine physicians were sent. The charities department has despatched its two bcats to the scene.FIVE HUNDRED PERISHED.The General Slocum had on board the annual Sunday School excursion of the St.Mark's Lutheran Church, which is located in Twenty-sixth street. The steamer was bound for Locust Grove, beyond Flushing, L.I., afid had over 1,000 people on board, mostly children. Most of the throng was on the hurricane deck, when we plainly taw Many must have been k.d instantly.” The latest report says that at least 500 have been burned.LL .Many were rescued by tugs and other vessels which promptiy came to the rescue when the flames broke out.The pastor of St.Mark’s Church, Rev.George C.Haas, was on board with all of his family, and it was reported was lost The boat caught fire in Hell Gate and the flames had com." plete control before any move could be made to check them.Frightful scenes of panic followed. It was impossible to run the boat ashore because of the Hell Gate rocks on either side and the captain kept her headed for North Brother Island.Nothing could be done in the way nt launching boats and as the flames advanced the passengers began to jumo overboard. They went into the river by hundreds. The disaster was witnessed by’ thousands of people from both shores of the river, and as rapidly as possible hundreds of small boats and launches set off to render assistance. With the boat burning under his feet the cap- tajn stuck to his post in the pilot house, and the engineer remained at his post below deck until the boat was beached at the lower end of north Brother Island oft Port Morris.BOAT A VERITABLE FURNACE.Even then, the passengers were not in a safe position, for they were some distance from shore, and the boat was a furnace.Hundreds of small boats which were scattered about picked up those whp jumped overboard, as rapidly as possible. It is estimated that between 400 and 500 persons sprang into the water.oT UPPER DECK COLLAPSED.An eye witness said the greatest loss of life was due to the collapsing of the heavy upper deck.It fell with a crash soon ofter the firk started, crushing hundreds of persons who had gathered on the lower deck.It was then that the greatest panic ensued. There was a living stream of persons going over the railing into the walter. As far as eye-witnesses can determine the flames originated on the forward part of the boat.Persons who saw the accident from the shore say that almost instantly persons who occupied places on the forward deck began to jump overboard.-‘Poticemen in the Bronx and Harlem | saw the blazing boat steaming up the river and immediately began to- turn in alarms for ambulances and fire boats. All the boats at North Brother Island were sent to the assistance of the people In the water, and as fast as they were brought ashore were cared for in the pavilions there. The patients in the hospitals on the island became almost insane from fright and at the terrible scenes they had witnessed.A large part of the crowd on the doomed steamer were children, and thers was little hope for them after they had gone overboard. The current in the East River at this point is very strong and scores of little ones were sucked in by the whiripools.SAW FIFTY CHILDREN PERISH.One man who went out in a row boat, said that be saw at least fifty children perish in these whirlpools before he could reach them.Persons on tug boats say that several hundred bodies have been washed ashore, or were towed or carried in boats to the shore of North Brother Island.Almost every other woman who was taken away was calling for her children. The excursion was in charge of the society committee of the church headed by Miss Mary Abendschein. In the minister's party.his son said were the pastor, Miss Abendschein, assistant superintendent Carl Schlafer, the pastors daughter, Gertrude, his sister, Miss Emma Haas, and W.B.Telamore.At the office of the United States Steamboat Inspection .Bureau, it was sald the General Slocum was inspected on May 5, and was reported to be In a thoroughly good condition and ready for the excursion season.Aboard the steamer was all the life-saving apparatus required by law of steamers of her capacity, 2,500.The General Slocum's licensed captain is Captain W.H.Van Schaick, one of the oldest excursion captains in New York harbour waters. The Slocum salled from the foot of third street, east river, shortly after 9%o'clock.The exact point she had reached when flames were discovered in the forward part of the béat, was off the “sunken mead " _at the extreme east end of Randall Island. So quick was the spread of the flames that the captain of the Slocum could not turn and was forced‘ to make head-on for North Brother Island under full steam.BEGAN TO JUMP OVERBOARD.By the time the Slocum reached one hundred and thirty-fifth street, the excursionists.driven to the rail, many of them with their ciothing on fire, began to jump overboard by twos and threes. When one hundred and thirty- eighth street had been reached, the heat from the fire had become so intense that men, women and children plunged overboard by the score.- There was a terrific crash when the boat was beached.} BURNED TO WATER'S EDGE.The boat was beached at the reef at the northern end of North Brother Island, where she rapidly burned to the water's edge.It 1s sat” the fire started In the lunch ~nunter in the forward part of the boat. When the alarm spread among the passengers the hurricane deck was crowded, and when off 138th street this deck collapsed. Many per—| sons were .irown into the water, but hundreds were precipitated into the lvwer deck, which was itself crowded with women and children.BODIES TERRIBLY BURNED.Manv of te bodies recovered were horribly burned.Wreckers say that it will be hours before the fire in the hold of the boat is out and the bodies there can be recovered. Both firemen: and wreckers say that the greatest Anger, William loss of life, extending into the hundreds.will be found in the hoif.Manv of these picked up ve in the river will die in the Most of them were frightfully batned having delayed leaping from the, haat |- until their clothing was on fire. Some died in the Improvised ambulances In which they were hurried from the shore.EFFORTS TO SAVE CHILDREN.Every man on board who could swim went: overboard loaded down with children. Many of these heroes lost their lives, because, burdened as they were they could make no headway against the overpowering swirl of the tide as ‘¢ rushes from the Past River into the Sound.’ ’ When police headquarters received the first vague report of the disaster, every source of succour and ald was utilized. The hospitals were notified by telephone, and each sent all available surgeons, nurses and ambulances to the scene.BRITAIN STIRRED IVER INCIDENT Np 2 SAT ~ English Journals Daily Telegraph thinks nothing could be more ui- fortunate than the disagreement between Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Lord Dundonald.“After what has oc- ocurred,” M says, “it matters little whether Laurier dismisses Lord Dun- dacypld or not.their relations, in any case, will become too stralned for harmonious co-operation {in the future. The habit of airing semi-personal grievances by officers of high rank is most regrettable.Lord Wolseley and General! Buller, to take the most emi- nept offenders, have set an example, ly followed by other “grousers” less distinction. The T'uke of Wel- ington often complained, but embod- his complaints in despatches, and did not vent them at dinners or luncheons. It ig in this respect that Lord Dundonald has given himself away to the French-Canadian Premier, who has ajlowed himself to protest against Canadians bein: dregooned by ‘‘foreigners,” a word for which he substituted the hardly less offensive term ‘‘stran- 8ir John Macdonald would ve stuck to the commander of the militia through thick and thin, but, then, £ir John Was a British leader.None, of the parties to the quarrel has much reason to be proud of it.Lord Pun “‘nald’s speech was ill-considered and indiscreet: Sir Wilfrid Laurier's reply was quite unnecessarily ve hement, and Mr.Fisher's position ls too awkward for him to desire to be often reminded of it.” TRUTH.Truth says: “Both General Hutton and Lord Dundonald seem to have regarded themselves as superiors of the civil power, and both have been recall- pd to their true position by the respective Governments they serve.“There are unhappily the gravest ujts on both sides.Whatever truth at underlies Dundonald's de- | test against the introduction of party politics into matters of military administration, and that his remarks are founded upon a basis of incontrover- Uble fact is clearly proved by the support which he has received from a res- .—of-the Canadian press —th Te is no justification for the indiscretion which misled him into making such a pronouncement in his capacity as an Imperial officer. On the other hand, the Premier, whom the whole Empire has learnt to regard with admiration, no less for his distinguished personal attributes than his public services, permitted his tongue to run away with him in a manner only less culpable because there was a severe provocation. That Sir Wilfrid Laurier, even in the stress and heat of exceptional circumstances, should have allowed himself to speak of a prominent British soldier as a ‘foreigner.is in our view even more regrettable than this undignified talk of dragooning.” THE YORKSHIRE POBT.The Yorkshire Post says: “Sir Wilfrid Laurier's use of the words ‘foreigner and stranger’ shows that in a cranny of the Premier's mind there lingers the earlier suggestion of Canadian Liberals that Canada was allied to the United States rather than to the British Empire. The only fault to be found with Lord Dundonald is his method, which has made his position in Canada quite impossible.” .The Manchester Guardian says: “It is a great pity that a Colonial commanding officer should not know better than to commit such a breach of discipline and constitutional propriety as has Lord Dundonald.” The Guardian concludes a column editorial by saying: “The best every one can do is to accept what has happened as past mending, at any raté by us in England, and, above all, not to join in the attempts, which a few English newspapers are making to work up a Dundonald party in Canada or to get the Dundonald cause adopted by one of the political parties there as a party plank.A thoughtless trick of this sort might end by estranging the whole colony.” THE WESTMINSTER GAZETTE.The Westminster Gazette says: “Lord Dundonald can comfort himself with the reflection that his ancestor Cochrane had to leave the navy for protesting against political abuses in the sister service.” } ; Covers Money Savers.Canvas covers are a good thing to have on a bal field. With a little money expended in these the Buffalo team could have played with Montreal on the afternoon of Decoration Day.The local club saved a few dollars in canvas and lost thousands as a result of the rain. Two small covers enabled Buffalo and Rochester to play Monday.Rochester Out of It.Rochester was treated to another defeat Tuesday by Buffalo. The tall-ent~ ers made ten errors and played amateurish. It will probably be the State League for Rochester next year.Threw a Bat Unnoticed.George Carey, about the only ballplayer on the Rochester team.played a contemptible trick in Monday's game when he threw a bat at McAllister as the latter went after a foul ball. The umpire passed unnoticed.Fourth of July Game.Toronto will oppose Buffalo on July 4th, the date of return of the Bison aggregation to the Queen City. The team leaves Wednesday night for a series with Jersey City in the mosquito town.A Pretty Good Record.Jones Won his game yesterday, making it six won and none lost this season. That is a great record.but Alec will have to watch out at Jersey City when the Bisons play there the latter part of this week. The Boston Amerirans drew 65,416 in 11 games on the trip.Del.Mason, a former Bison.and now with the Baltimore team, opposed ‘Mil- ligan in Monday's"game In the Southern city and won It.Mason comes from Lockport, and is a good twirler. The Rochesters are badly crippled.Capt.George Smi has a badly swollen leg from .old spike wound.Nichols, the catcher.has two lacerated fingers, and Arthur Madison has a broken finger.Ban Johnson says that every one of his clubs has had a splendid season so far and is financially way ahead of expenses.Well, if the clubs can make money on such attendances as the Restons had in Detroit, the league can be run on wind.High times in baseball society. From Chg rley Dryden.of the Philadelphia th American: Last evening Mr. PRIZES FOR Miss Minnie night of June 11-12, the Japanese attacked our advance posts near the village of Ut- saten, south of Wan Fang Tien station, and above the Piltsewo-Pp-Lan-Tien line. The Japanese were repulsed with four soldiers killed and 18 wounded.“During the evening of June 8, Lieut.Lang, while engaged in a reconnais- ance in the neighbourhood of Ontachet- sa, ten miles north-east of Al Yang Meun.was attacked by two companies of Japanese. He succeeded in forcing his way through, after a hand to hand fight.‘According to information, 3.000 Japanese are marching north-wards toward Hua Yen advance of the Japanese from Siu-Yen toward Taling Pass was observed today.” MAY BE IMPORTANT.It is thought that the Vafangow affair may prove to have been quite a heavy fight. The fact that the
