Peter Rozon) How Was Cities\u2019 Money For The Poor Used?OUTSTANDING ACCOUNTS PAYMENTS STOPPED As more and more astounding facts come to light regarding Fu blic Assisiance paymenls made by the City of Vaieyriesd aur- ing 1909 it is obvious that something very much wrong has been going on last year and perhaps several years beïore that.The new commiitee for Public Assistance in Valeyfield, headed by alderman Jo Degre, who is ably assisted by deputy chief of police Haineault, cunti- nues to pay very much smalier amounts oi money each month than at the same time last year and is helping a larger number of families.At last week's press conference Mayor Robert Cauchon announced that during March of this year the city paid out some $1,400 as compared to $5,000 in 1959 and the record shows that a few more families received help last month than in Mar.'59.However, Mr.Cauchon revealed even more fantastic facts.When the new administration took over at the Town Hall at the end of January last, and announced that Public Assistance would be reorganised and a special committee headed by an alderman would be in charge, the council was asked by the St.V.de Paule Society the organisation which looks after the distribution and aliocation of help to the poor mn the city, if outstanding biis prior to the new administration would be paid.The council agreed to do so and as Mayor Cauchon told the press \u201cwe expected these {o amount to about d or 6,000 doliars.\u201d However, Mayor Cauchon announced, showing great anger as he spoke further on the subject, that since Feb, 6th of this year these \u201coutstanding bills\u201d have amounted to $19,710.57, in spite of the fact that during the period for which these accounts are payable monihly payments of between 4 and 6 thousand dollars were made.Mr.Cauchon said that Vincent de Paule had been informed that no furthe: \u201coutstanding accounts\u201d would be paid.To verify his statements Mr.Cauchon produced a number of lists with names presented to the Public Assistance Committee.The names appearing on these lists with an amount of money mentioned behind each name, represented some of the \u2018\u2018outstanding accounts\u201d the city has been asked to pay.All the amounts mentioned were an even number of dollars.There was no mention of | In Memory of Dr.| & Mrs.McDonald The memory of Dr.and Mrs.John A.McDonald was honour ed last Sunday morning at the Valleyfield United Church at the unveiling and dedication of a memorial window prescnted to the church by their children, Dr.P.Robb McDonald of Philadelphia, Mrs.Kenneth G.(Jean) MacMillan of St.Lambert, and Mrs.H.M.(Peggy) Metcalf of Atlanta, Ca.DR.JOHN A.McDONALD The new memorial window is the large window facing on Dui- ferin Street and is entitled \u201cChrist of ail Nations\u201d.It depicts Christ surrounded by childien, each child of a different race, red, white black, biown aud yellow.The symbolism is particularly suitable since Dr.and Mrs.McDonald gave so many years of their lile as missionaries in South China.Dr.Mco- nald died in July 1857 while Mrs.McDonald died eigni- een years ago.Their loss is stil felt very keenly by everyone in Valleyfield.(Continued on page 3) what the amounts were for.Asked if the present administration plans to prosecute, Mr.Cauchon said \u201chis commitice is continuing its investigation\u201d.An embarrassing point in this case is that most of the aldermen, now members of the City Council, also occupied seats in the previvus adminisiration.The mayor further announced that the Council is planning to amend the bylaw regarding the public market.It costs the city some $4,000 a year to maintain the market while only between $1500 and $2,000 is collected from those who use it.
