It is as a reminder of this fact that the nation is observing Fire Prevention Week from October 8 te 14.Nearly one-fourth of all fires in this coun: try are caused by matches and careless smoking, according to the Canadian Underwrites’ As- sogiation; another twenty per cent are the result of misuse of electrical equipment.Simply by using care with matches and lighted cigaretles, cigars and pipes, we can hold down our vast fire toll, By keeping matches away from children we can prevent them from starting fires.By making sure that all of our electrical appliances are in good repair, we can reduce the possibility of fire still further.These ave some of the truths being stressed during Fire Prevention Week this year.Fire Prevention Week always falls in the week containing October 9th, for it was on that day in 1871 that the Great Chicago Fire broke THE ST.LAWRENCE SUN A weekly newspaper covering the district of Valleyficld, Beauharnois and Chateauguay Published by the St.Lawrence Sun Publishing Limited.Editor and General Manager : PHILIP VAN SON Authorized as Second Class Mail — Post Office Department, Ottawa.Mailing Address : P.O.Box 20 — Beauharnois or P.O.Box 302 — Valleytield ST.THE LAWRENCE 8 out.The Chicago fire took 250 lives and destroyed 17,80 buildings and other property worth $175,000,000.In terms of today's construction costs, the Chicago property damage would have run into hillions! The Great Chicago Fire, in addition to being tragic and costly, had one constructive facet - it made North America fire conscious.Eventually it brought recognition of the need for a, concerted national fire prevention effort.Each year the Queen, by proclamation, sets aside the week containing October 9th, as Fire Prevention Week in Canada.Last year, in this county of ours, Fire took the lives of over 560 persons, with over 230 of these being children.Fire losses in Canada have exceeded $124.000,000 for the second year in a row, with the total climbing substantially each year.It is to the interest of all to rededicate ourselves to the never-ending crusade against Fire.THOUGHT OF THE WEEK He who wants to persuade should put his trust, not in the right argument, but in the right word.— Joseph Conrad.Finest Chinese & Canadian Dishes Restaurant Kwong - Corriveau Inc.STARTING AT 11 A.M.DAILY 76 ST.CECILE — VALLEYFIELD — FR.32112 Support Blood Donors Clinic Next Week J.PAUL CHATEL 53 St Laurent - Beauharnois 103 Alexandre 199 Victoria - Valleyfield YOUR FAMILY SHOE STORE A Red Cross Blood Mobile Unit will be in Valleyfield on October 9th and 10th, This was, announced by Mr.J.O.L.Char-;
