Beauharnois Intermediate School was presented with the Chateauguay Valley Teachers’ Association trophy for having won the greatest number of points in the school choir classes. The Festival Committee had invited the school to participate in the final concert and the mixed high school choir sang one of their favorite festival pieces, The Happy Wanderer, which was well received by an enthusiastic audience. After the song, the President of the C.V.T.A.Mr.Roland Green- bank, presented the schoo! principal, Mr.R.Gill with the trophy. This marked the conclusion of the music programme in the school, and later Mr.Gill paid thanks to the school pianist, Mrs.Royko for her excellent accompaniment, the school board and the teachers for their wonderful co-operation.Earlier Saturday morning, the junior choir from grades 3, 6, and 7 had been invited to compete for the B'nais Rotary trophy against Junior and Senior Choirs from the Valley, English and French.Though they sang well, Beauharnois lost cut to a girls’ choir from Notre Dame du Rosaire of Ormstown.Though this was the first Mu- sic Festival of ils kind in the Chateauguay Valley, there were more than 250 entries for classes which accommodated practically every musical talent, The great majority of events were held at Ormstown High Schodl, but the school choir event was held at Beauharnois Intermediate School because of the large number of students from the school participating.Practically every studenl competed, with eight choirs having been entered. The adjudicator of this event awarded seven firsts to Beauharncis and one second. The choirs were all directed by Mr.Gill, and the accompanist was Mrs.Royko, school pianist.Everyone was very proud of the effort put forward by the school.OTHER WINNERS problem of pollution, new construction in Valleyfield during 1961 and the laying of new sewers.WATER POLLUTION The mayor announced that the Union of Municipalities of the Province of Quebec met in Montreal on May 2.The purpose of this meeting was to protest against Lhe way the provincial government wants to handle the water pollution problem.According to Mr.Cauchon, Quebec wanis every municipality to carry out water purification plans with the assistance of local engineers. So, let's suppose, he declared, that Montreal continues Lo pour sewage into the river this would mean that the neighbouring municipalities would have to pay more for the purification of water, In view of this development, the Union of Municipalities have formed a committee of four mayors ., the mayors of Sherbrooke, De- je Ste-Rose and Valley- field .‘ with the purpose of meeting Premier Jean Lesage to diseuss this very serious problem.LOCAL CONSTRUCTION THE INCREASE ON rds to new constructions finir” Quand des membres d'un conseil de ville dénoncent publiquement l’administration et le maniement des affaires par les autres membres de ce même conseil, toute personne sensée s'apercevra qu'il y a quelque chose de louche là-dessous. These “Funny things” must end When members of a town council publicly denounce the administration and handling of affairs by the other members of this council it cannot leave any doubt in anyone's mind but that there is something very drastically wrong. And so there is! While there are several reasons, for this continual disagreement between factions of the Chateauguay Centre town council, it is obvious that the Council is divided in two political camps: Four members together with the mayor are Liberals. One of these however, votes with the other two members. One is National Union.the other an independent. In other words a clear case of Party politics interfering with municipal administration. This in our opinion is the main reason for most of the disagreement. Then there is the factor that the council does not seem capable of handling the administration of an area which is expanding as fast as Chateau- guay Centre or the problems that come with such a growth.Whatever the reason or reasons, it is high time this situation be corrected, and at once, not tomorrow! And furthermore if there is definite proof of incompetence, be it intentional or otherwise, then the taxpayers and residents of Chateauguay Centre must demand that legal steps be taken to make an immediate election of a new Council possible. We fully realize these are strong words, but we also feel they interpret the mood of the population, and after all that’s our job. There is continual disagreement and mismanagement of the police force.A number of articles have appeared in the SUN leaving no doubt in anyone's mind that the so called amalgamation of the Police Force is being used as a political football between the two Cha- teauguays; then there is the question of the town manager who gets told at least once a week by one or more councillors that he is incompetent fo do the work he has been hired for; then we come to one of the most recent issues whether or not gravel roads are as good as crushed stone and the fact that the manager's recommendations are being ignored in spite of the fact that the cost is less?Politics maybe? And a number of other examples could easily be cited. No doubt the three rebelling council lors must have some good reason to base their statement on .“the funniest things are happening at the meeting at a quarter to midnight.” In conclusion we would like to say that we regret the three council! members concerned didn’t speak up sooner. Also, if the council is not capable of cleaning its own house it should be done for them and the sooner the better. For Chateauguay fo become a second Lafleche is a most undesirable prospect. The English catholic parents of St.Ignatius have requested the school board of Salaberry- de-Valleyfield to ask the Department of Education to consider the enlargement of St.Ignatius school as soon as possible. The school has 3 classes in St-Eugéne school as of pow because ,of lack of space.Speaking as delegate of the parents, Mr.Laurence O'Neil asked the School board that Miss Mary Pease who is principal and now retiring be replaced by an English-speaking director.Concerning the first request, the president of the school board has asked the secretary to make the necessary arrange | ments. As for the new English i principal, the board will advertise in one of the English daily papers in Montreal Remember MOTHER on HER DAY SUNDAY, MAY 13th GIVE HER Flowers CUT FLOWERS or POTTED PLANTS BUY THE BEST !
