[" THE 9th Yr., no.39 10 pages $200,000 GRANT CULTURAL AND RECREATION CENTRE FOR VALLEYFI TO COMMEM At a press conference at his office in Valleyfield last Saturday morning Mr.Gerard Cadieux M.P.P.announced that a 300,000 dollar Cultural and Recreation Centre is to be built in Valleyfield as part of the plans to celebrate Canada’ s 100th birthday in 1967.To achieve this a grant of $200,000 will be made available jointly by the provincial and federal governments with the provincial charge of the administration Mr.Cadieux told members of the press that the province has been divided into 45 sections and that throughout the province 45 cultural and recreation centres are to be built.The Valleyfield centre will encompass the complete county of Beau- harnois, of which Valleyfield is by far the largest city, and probably part of the Hunt- ingdon county.However, Mr, GERARD CADIEUX, M.P.P.Cadieux pointed out that in order to qualify for the 200,000 dollar grant a minimum of 100,000 dollars must be raised through contributions from the public and other , sources.He also said that* the project must be completed by 1966.Besides the initial grant the province will provide an annual grant tobe determined later according to the needs.Mr.Cadieux stated that it is his opinion that the project can only succeed if the population is prepared to contribute ‘‘both morally and financially.’ He also said with great emphasis that the project “will have no political affiliations of any kind or any political overtones.”’ He said the centre will be constructed with an “objective approach” and will be available to everybody.He further announced that he had asked Messrs.Gabriel Langevin one of the principal founders of the Centre Sportif Valleyfield Inc.an organization which never realized its goal due to lack of funds, and Dr.Marc Trépanier, to head a committee which will be in complete charge of the administration, the construction and promotion of the centre with of course supervision by .by Mr.government in complete of the project.the provincial body headed Guy Lechasseur who will be in overall charge of the construction of the 45 centres throughout the province.Mr.Langevin and Dr.Trépanier will have the task to form the local committee and organize the promotion and construction of the centre.They have been asked to complete study, plans and other details by the 1stof August of this year so that construction can commence sometime next fall or early in 1965.Although the centre will be built in Valleyfield, -all municipalities and towns throughout the area will be invited to participate and contribute, with of course.the main contribution and cooperation to come from the city of Valleyfield.Mayor Robert Cauchon has already indicated that he is not ‘Against the plan but that he’ wants all the necessary details in order to present it to the members of his council.While the name of the centre emphasizes Cultural and Recreational activities, sports will also play an important.role in the activities ofthe centre.While no plans have as yet been drawn up the centre will most likely contain an auditorium, library, swimming pool, bowling alley, gymnasium, conference rooms, musichallandother facilities.In the meantime Messis.Cadieux, Langevin, Dr.Trépanier and Claude Houle (notary) had a meeting on Monday of this week and announced that the ‘‘League Recession de Hockey de Valleyfield'" have been asked to meet on Friday, tomorrow, to decide if they are willing to form the executive, together with Messrs.Langevin and Trépanier,which in turn will promote and administrate the proposed centre.Also a number of the directors of the former Centre Sportif de Valleyfield Inc.have come forward and announced that they are willing to serve on the directorship of the new organization.From reports received so far public reaction to the plan has been most favourable and the officials are hopeful that construction of the centre can be carried out as planned without too many difficulties.“News is our Business” wie SU lThis the Dominion Textile Company has decided to build its new 12 million dollar plant in St.Jean and not in Valleyfield.Mr.Cauchon said he had good reason to believe that the company had originally planned to build its new plant in Valleyfield.On May 13th Mr.Cauchon will sign a purchase contract with the Merck company for the purchase of its plant and land on Dufferin Road in Val- leyfield.‘Mr.Cauchon declared that both the provincial government and the Municipal Affairs department have now given their approval.The One of the problems which will have to be worked out is what to do with the plans some of the municipalities in the area have, to build theirown centre.Beauharnois already has a very well organized and smooth running centre and will probably not be toointerested in the bigger projectin Valleyfield.However, their experience will no doubt be invaluable to the administrative committee in Valleyfield.Samedi seir, le 11 avril, avait social, l'on BRAT a coarse garment, BRIDE a thread connecting different parts of a lace pattern; SAD describes a dull and sombre fabric; ILLUSION is the name given long ago to a very transparent variety of silk cloth.Yet, FLEECE is still a common cnough word for skinning an casy mark, and VESTED once meant types of highly ceremonial costume.Two words which they say illustrate both derivation from a textile background and the changing nature of language are BOMBAST and FUSTIAN.Bombast originally meant cotton or any soft fibrous mater- jal used as padding.Fustian was a coarse cotton and flax cloth deriving its name from FOSTAT, an Egyptian town where it was first made.Outside the textile usage, these words both came to mean the same thing in Eng- +lish; that is inflated, pompous, and ridiculously inappropriate language.Shakespeare speaks of a fellow that “dost bombast his labors with high-swelling words" and of a similar character as a ‘‘fustian rascall”.Bombast survives today as a working word.We still speak of a speech as bombastic and of an orator as full of bombast.Fustian however is used only by the writer displaying scholarship.The English language is particularly rich in terms of textile origin because of the importance of the textile industry in the history of English people.Sheep certainly were domesticated in Britain long before Roman occupation, but the Romans established factories to supply their armies of occupation.It is no wonder that when we speak today of a man as being homespun, all wool and a vard wide, everyone knows what we mean.He is a genuine dyed-in-the- wool type.He may have a rough finish, but he is not run- of-the-mill type.His moral fibre is strong.According to the Textiles Institute, which represents Canada's vast industry of 80,000 workers, one could spin this out to some length by shuttling back and forth between good and bad uses df textile terms.Perhaps these are enough examples to show the intimate association between the development of the textile crafts and the development of language and culture and all that stuff.STUFF, by the way.is fabric or woven material not yet made into garments.;
