on the part of the government has found overpayments where statements made in claims were wrong amounted to 412,908.00 during four months of 1968.The average overpayment detected was $99.00.In June, 1908, five prison terms were imposed for abuses by claimants and investigations are continuing with extra staff, to protect the honest worker and taxpayer against these abuses. In some cases it might he better for the welfare of a man's family for him to draw unemployment than to work part time at a low paid job. When it is purely a matter of dollars and cents the man will naturally wish to do whatever brings in the most money. So it does happen that everyone who is on unemployment insurance isn't just lazy. But the idea of doing nothing for a living because doing nothing earns more than working is re- ing every time it rains) and the telephones are out of order many days each month Also there are still ten people on each line. The telephone company said they would have the new lines installed by December 15 and that the delay was being caused by the Hydro having to put up new poles—there is always someone else to blame of course. At any rate, no new lines have yet been installed.Of course the telephone i company is in a good posit- i ion.as there is no competition to force better service out them.1 suppose they feel that as we in the Ladysmith area have had bad service for so long, we can put up with it a while longer. It is shocking that within 50 miles of the capital of one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, people cannot even count on an adequate telephone service.Apart from the inconvenience of having to shout at friends down the telephone, having conversations listened to by half a dozen other people and not being able to make long distance calls because of impossible reception, there are two main grounds for com- plaint: Firstly at this time of year ; it would be comforting to be able to rely on the telephone in possible emergencies.Secondly, we are paying for a service which we are not getting. In place of a gift excbinge a collection was made and Cheer Mission ' sent to mounting to 8.50.The afternoon was spent a Yours sincerely, Sean Haldane 11 pugnant.\\ So why not attach some kind of work to the system of receiving unemployment insurance? The money comes from the government treasury which means the money belongs to the lax paying public. There is work that can he done for the benefit of the public which recipients of unemployment cheques could do.This would keep them fit and able to take on regular employment as soon as a job becomes available, and it would also give them a part to play in the community, and would remove the temptation to draw unemplox ment insurance while actually drawing wages.Til Christmas / / ## eie * Tis one week ’til Christmas and all thru the store our counters are brimming with gift buys galore.* SO Yean Ago 80 Yean Ago (4 / in The Equity December ests were most in evidence.Formerly in the Wyman U-1 nited Church, later after its amalgamation with Quyon U-i II nited Church in that congreg-j ation.I Apart from her own immed-! iate family no one will miss ! her more than will her church associates, in this nection she gave faithful and devoted service to the work of the Canadian Bible Society, so dedicated she was to this cause that her interest and zeal in this work was tained right up to the time of her death. Her endeavours in this regard were well recognized by all supporters of this organization as evidenced by I the many generous contributions to the Bible Society in her memory. These and the many beautiful floral offerings bore eloquent tribute to her great worth to her community I through the years. The funeral service conducted by Rev Roy Huntly, assisted by a nephew Rev William McDowell and Rev E N McColl with Rev R S Smith at the organ, was held in Quyon United Church.Interment was in the family plot at Norway Bay Cemetery. The late Mrs Campbell is survived by three sons, Harper of Noranda, Warren of Brooklin, Ont., and Edey of Beech Grove. Her youngest son, Clayton was killed in action in the Second World War.Two sisters also survive.Edna, Mrs James Leach of Toronto and Lu, Mrs S E McDowell of Shawville as well as | nine grandchildren and nine-1 teen great grand children.of FIm Marble M 11 ANDYS MUSIC SHOP n » t s THE LARGEST STOCK IN THE OTTAWA VALLEY VUif our Showroom •nd see for yourself GEORGE H.FROATS ft SONS LTD.121 Aigyle St.S.RENFREW, ONT.Phone 432-4224 Centre St - SHAWVILLE - Phone 647-2873 » » k LARGE SELECTION OF RECORD ALBUMS All Types in stock or order specially— CATALOGUE SERVICE FOR ALL MUSICAL ITEMS AND RECORDS * W5, BUY A .MORLEY HODGINS LTD.o Suggest GIFT OF COMFORT for your SANTA SUNBEAM APPLIANCES ?, 0, Hand Mixers, Electric Knives, Coffee Percolators, Electric Fry Pans, Carousel Rôtisserie Broiler, Blenders, 2 and 4-slice Toasters, Can Openers, Steam and Dry Irons, New Contemporary Electric Kettles, Portable Humidifiers, Lady Sunbeam Manicurist Machines, Lady Sunbeam Deluxe Portable Hair Dryers, Lightweight Vacuum Cleaners, New’ Deluxe Rug and Floor Conditioners.« > ## Santa knows that the Man of the house would appreciate nothing better than the gift of A Big Comfortable Chair many con- Priced From CORNING WARE GIFT SETS CORNING WARE TEA POTS AND COFFEE PERCOLATORS main- % Poker Tables, T V.Table Sets, Sewing Susan by Rubbermaid.Baseboard Heaters, Sani-Queen Garbage Cans, Bathroom Scales, Pressure Cookers, Spotlight Kits, Noma Xmas Light Sets, Miniature interior and exterior, Xmas light clips sC % to lB Recliners Loungers Rockers Swivel Rockers and many more A Wl N # ¦HEADQUARTERS HANDYMAN .* 4 b» U A I w Complete line of Shop - Mate, Shop - Craft and Rockwell Porter ¦ Cable & Beaver Power Tools CONVENIENT TERMS MAY BE ARRANGED Morley Hodgins Ltd.BUY NOW FOR CHRISTMAS DELIVERY DALE S FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES Phone 647-2727 Shawville King Street (Formerly Shawville Electric) Phone 647-3836 É___ Thursday, December 19th, 1968 tOUIT> Page 6 Ml I F I Phone 2500 SO CENTS MINIMUM BOX NUMiffXS 2St A WEEK LEGAL NOTICES SI.00 PEE INCH Clesiified edi may be phoned in before Wednesday of eech week.No charge# lei# then $1.00 !
