The fire was brought under control by 6 a.m.but water was kept on until Sunday by which time the last embers were extinguished.Wakelam states that the full staff is at work cleaning up the site and he plans to rebuild and is doing everything possible to keep the plant going at full strength.y * H / X r% % k.* m * * k.(Ai ?1 ' \\ I * ¦H I-, BW* M* 3 Recognition for Al n Darlene Hearty (left) awarded Al Davis and his wife Joan with a gift in appreciation of their many efforts towards minor hockey. The presentation was made during the International Midget Hockey Tournament in Shaw ville last weekend.See EQUITY PHOTO By Sunday afternoon, all was quiet after the excitement of a fire at Boyles very early Saturday morning.more photos inside Pontiac-Gatineau- Labelle Federal constituency is now official J 1 I I i, ii.i l * rj Ç-f .ÆZ9 k.» me numbers to call to take part in the Culture Festival * w.Tom Lefebvre, M.P., is pleased to announce the adoption, yesterday, by both Houses of the Canadian Parliament, the Commons and the Senate, of a Bill to change the name of the federal electoral constituency of Pontiac, making official the name PONTIAC - GATINEAU - LABELLE.Mr Lefebvfe had presented this Bill in order that the name of the constituency be more descriptive of the vast area contained within its boundaries and so that all residents be able to indentify with it more easily.LI I i» * w ## 4 4 jpri kt- ; Paperback • $1.95.No doubt many of you have eeen the film by the same name, but until you read the book your feeling of "relentless terror"" will not be complete.Benchley was born into a family of writers and learned the trade well.Unerringly he reaches into his vocabulary and brings out the words moat likely to chill the blood and keep you reading.by Dorothy Yemen A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER Founded In 1883 Published every Wednesday at Pontiac Prlntshop Ltd Shawville.Quebec by Devkl, Ronnie on, Ross and Heather Dickson Advertising Manager Brent Horner 647-2204 Pontiac A Gatineau Counties $7.00 par year ($4.00 tor $ months) Elsewhere In Canada $$.00 per year Outside Canada $12.60 per year Second class mail registration number 0649 Legal deposit in the Quebec National Library This la a little barb to stick in this bilingualism conflict and, hopefully, help break it off.Every single document or legal notice, etc., that my parents or I receive in the mail, is always in French, establishment in Quebec is supposed to be bilingual, but where is the connection? There is no literature, etc., sent to homes in Quebec in English - it has to be requested.Did anyone ever notice the bilingualism in the new Quebec licence plates?Or the drivers' licences?Or the new road signs going up.I'm impressed (or should say depressed) by Rend Levesque and Pierre Trudeau, who try to tell the people in Canada that Quebec is a bilingualistic province. On Tuesday, March 28, 1978, I received a bill from the Quebec Ambulance Service totally in French of course, and got a bit hot under the collar over it.When I phoned to Hull to request a bill in English my civil right-1 was told that when the ambulance driver came to pick me up he did not demand to know whether I was English or French (suggesting that since I wanted my bill in English that the driver should only pick up French speaking people).I was given an arguement but the person whom I was talking to finally said that I could have the bill in English but that I would be taken to court because my payment would be after the stated date of payment, April 1, the French bill. Therefore, I could get my English bill but it would be late and.hence, totally useless to me.Whether my plea to have an English bill instead of a French bill does any chipping away at this French English conflict.I MY ORGANIC GARDENING by Venetia Crawford, (highway Book Shop, Cobalt, Ont.) Paperback - $1.50.Mrs Crawford is a resident of Campbell's Bay.She has a green thumb, along with much enthusiasm for growing the healthiest foods possible in good old Mother Earth. My thumb doesn’t have the slightest tinge of green.Plants regard me with disfavour and wilt.My father and mother were expert gardeners and used up far too much of my time in the fall when I had a date to play baseball, by making me cover the freeseables with old raggedy blankets and newspapers. It turned me off.Jack never allows me to plant or weed his garden but does let me pick the peas and tomatoes. The This is fiction. The story describes the daily life of year round residents of a summer resort on the Atlantic ocean. To insure that they have jobs, the tourists must come. Before the is killed while swimming at night. The season opens a woman sparse but ghastly remains found in the morning indicate a shark attack. Is this a one-time thing?Has the fish departed the scene?Village politics and pressures arise.Should the of this horrible death be given to the newspapers?Let me tell you that making "tea" out of manure for her plants does not faze Venetia one bit but she warns you not to "water" the inside plants with it if you are expecting guests in the near future! The instructions in her pamphlet are clear enough for even a dumb-dumb like myself to understand, and who knows, I may yet make a feeble attempt out there among the earth worms to grow a patch of something or other organically.news If you want a thriller, read Benchley - but not just before going to bed. Here's a sample: "The fish broke water right beside the boat, with a great rushing whoosh of noise. It vertically, and in an instant of horror Brody gasped at the sise of the body ." It was a white shark about twenty feet long.RADIO-PONTIAC There is a dub in Hull called La Société nationale des Québécois, which is actually not a national group, in fact one of their firmest aims is to destroy the nation. However, they have other aims as well. With regard to the proposed radio station in Pontiac County, the Société wants it to be all in French, despite the conclusion of those doing the feasibility study that the station should be bilingual. To substantiate their case for an all French radio station, the Société draws on weird statistics. They claim that since more Pontiac people listen to English radio stations than to French stations their own local station should he French.strong barriers between the French and English not only in Quebec, but «11 over the country. And I know that everyone has to agree with me in that reaped. If this Quebec we're residing in is supposed to be a province for people speaking English and-or French, let's see a little of both and not just cut out one or the other.don’t know.I am "just " a seventeen (17) year old woman in a small town who has a strong opinion about my rights as an English speaking person.Maybe if a few other people of any status would voice their opinions instead of brooding about it in the quiet of their homes and offices, schools and universities, we could settle this dispute and get on with other matters of importance.I really do not think that writing up 1,001 bills about language totalitarianism, which is what, in my opinion, is now being created in Quebec, will create a better world in which to live.As of right now.it is building hard and on Alternatives Yours very sincerely, (Miss) Valerie Thompson.for the Dispossessed P.8.This letter was not written in French because no one has to read this letter or this paper. It is a matter of choice As for bills, leases, documents of sale, etc, they are not a matter * of choice and they should be printed in both languages for the public’s convenience. This also goes for licences, road signs, by Jm Brown 1.Alternatives for the dispossessed will now be performed upon a stage legally sanctioned by the new government. The actors are a curious bunch, all popular, all visible: some visionary in decrees by application: • in degrees like this river flowing right here and left there.Still, it remains a sluice pipe for E.B.Eddy.The Editor, The Equity, .Dear Editor, This summer *78, the Shawville 4-H Club will take part in a "once in a lifetime ' opportunity.Members of the club will be acting as hosts and hostesses or ambassadors to our country for twenty seven 4-H members from Wales, U K.These 4-H members are participating in an exchange in which Shawville members will be visiting Wales next year. They will be coming to Canada around the middle of August for two weeks. We want to make this visit to Canada a memorable experience for them.We are open to ideas which we could include in an agenda for their stay here in Canada.Since we are a youth group with not a very large financial backing, we would also appreciate any businessman or service club who could support us in any way.We have planned a bottle drive for this Saturday, April 8th.We know that we will need the community behind us, supporting our plans, in everything we do, if this exchange is to be a success. Please offer your support to one very worthwhile young people’s project.etc They claim that since more people read the Citizen and the Journal than read Le Droit, the local people prefer the French language. They claim that since several attempts to publish a French language weekly paper in Pontiac have failed but THE EQUITY goes on forever, the people of this County prefer to use French for communications.Since those who can speak French around here are using it more and more, and since those who can't speak French are trying to learn it as fast as possible, it can be assumed that the general local attitude towards the French language is good. But how long can this continue if those Hull outfits like the above mentioned Société try to force-feed their version of counternationalism on our otherwise easy going bilingual countryside? * The whole notion of a government supported radio station goes against the better judgement of the average free enterprising Canadian, especially when the government doing the supporting is a separatist government Having a strong separatist club like the Société also trying to call the shots makes it even less savoury.Dear Editor, What next will they try and tak away from us Pontiac County residents? It is very hard to believe that such an intelligent group of people would make such proposals concerning wood-lot owners in this County.According the the information I received, any wood owner would have more to lose than he would gain, unless you take under consideration the eligibility to qualify for Unemployment Insurance. However I do feel if this group was an established Company it would be illegal to make sJch proposals, because certain property owners might get the impression they need to be in such an organization in order to sell their products.I could go on but there isn’t anything worthwhile discussing on the matter. .#• ,: v I If I ever read anything that wasn’t worth the time it took to read it this proposal has got to be it.Yours truly, Douglas Gautheir, Otter Lake, P.Q.Confederation too, is a sluice pipe for bad feelings, strike breakers, the R.C.M.P.and their operation "waterbed", Legalised banditry, organised crime against unorganised peoples: in short, we have little use for it.I would sooner trade my interest (a exploiter more significant than the exploitation itself?(A stream of actors floods the stage and heated debate is followed by some jostling, but no one falls.) The audience becomes excited.I But if it comes to pass that Pontiac does get a radio station we will of course do all we can to see that it becomes a good means of communication within this County.Meanwhile it would be wise for everyone interested in the County to make sure that no outside pressure group dictates terms to such an important medium as a community radio station.41 /4W nn % W9 » kv>, $ 47* i* » k & Q# a if lia A man in the front row rises to his feet.He begins walking toward the stage. He unfastens the buttons of his shirt as he moves closer to the stage. With a sweeping motion he pulls a dripping brown lung from beneath his shirt and slams it to the actors’ feet: Salute to our over nineties ft v There were 327 people in attendance at Pentecostal Sunday School on Easter.Prizes for bringing in the most visitors went to Heather White, Tammy Jean-Marie and Terry Sparling.Pastor White is seen above with the proud winners.By Richard McAra ' m * An Easter play was put on at the Pentecostal Church with Angie Atkinson, Heather White, Cathy Tubman, Lori Stewart and Darwin Zimmerling and also, partly seen from behind, Jamie Lemay, David Davit, Kim Davis and Darwin Stephens.‘This is the price of Asbestos." (Some of the actors are thunderstruck while still others debate various forms of compensation to the board.) .,V- X: > m ) -
