legislation or other action which could adversely affect the English community.Action on four fronts was discussed. In health and social services efforts will be made to get the CLSC offices to provide to the repeated and persistent demands of the teachers and students as well as of the parents committee, all of whom were pressing for an immediate campaign for Heritage autonomy.Instead, the Board of on the subject. It was only after the results of this extensive consultation by Dick Henderson For the second time within almost as many weeks, the Gegep de l'Outaouais “conseil d'administration" has once again slammed the door on Heritage Campus, by refusing to even consider a motion to lend their approval and assistance to the latter in their bid for autonomy. The Heritage Board of Governors had mandated its chairman, Richard E Henderson, to personally express its dissatisfaction regarding the manner their brief had been disposed of by the Cegep conseil ami to reiterate its request for approval and assistance in promoting autonomy for Heritage. They resented the indifference shown to their official representatives when, in response to the personal invitation of the director general, they had attended the March 27th meeting of the “conseil d’administration of the Cegep de rOutaouais.Careful examination of the first of the two resolutions that had been adopted by that meeting in Response to Heritage’s request for assistance, indicated that the conseil s attitude could be termed condescending, per haps even bordering on the insulting, because it implied that Wednesday, May 1,1985 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Looking at the forest, not the trees Editorial don't toll thorn about Spinach Please 10,000 wood producers and 125,000 woodlot owners elsewhere in Quebec?Would the Board be able to drive as hard a bargain with the local mills if it was not aware of what sort of agreements wood producers in other parts of the province were getting?Dear Editor: Please refrain from giving credit to my favorite vegetable, spinach, or to any other food that benefits my health. You may cause it to be classified as a drug' and seized ! * The Health Protection Branch of the Federal Department of Health and Welfare is displaying interestingly undesirable thinking in banning from retail outlets an increasing number of ppleraental foods and herbs which are being sold in capsule ' form. The list of products already seized, reclassified or threatened by department regulations should suggest to you why I fear for spinach. . - On the ban list is Cayenne - renowned for its beneficial use in ; lowering blood pressure; bee pollen; Don Quai, garlic and royal jelly. Also on the list is ginsing - considered to be the king of all tonics — which helps overcome stress and fatigue and normalizes blood pressure.Comfrey, salmon oil and wheat germ oil, keip.the list goes on.What is the danger in the intelligent common sense use of products such as garlic, kelp or bee pollen? No more than the intelligent use of carrots, peas or spinach. Why is no effort made by the Health Protection Branch to closely restrict or otherwise control the ease of access of pam killers that are freely available and can be fatal if swallowed by infants. Why this arbitrary and undemocratic behaviour which is so obviously biased against "health foods".Once a food supplement has been classified as a drug it may , become an item which cannot be sold off the shelves by non pharmacists or without prescription. Why make it illegal to try and prevent disease before it comes, to become responsible v for our own bodies. .» , , . ' It is still a ‘buyer's beware1 market and health food products have been guilty of using exaggerated claims and marketing .On Wednesday, April 25th, the members of the Pontiac Wood Producers’ Board at their annual meeting decided to evict personnel working for the Quebec Federation of Wood Producers from the Board s office and decided not to hold a vote on whether or not to stay with the Federation. They were only dissuaded from holding such a vote because, without having given proper notice to the membership that a vote on such a serious matter was to take place, the vote would not have been binding. The new Board is planning on holding another vote at a properly publicized meeting in the near future. It still is not clear however why some of the members want to quit the Federation.increased 130% and even at that, the producers were unable to fulfill their quota with CIP.In addition to commissions, the producers’ Board received $12,349 from the Federation from money that had been over-budgetted for doing a survey. The Federation could have easily found some other use for this money, but it chose, rather, to return it to the Boards. In all, the Board realized a surplus of revenues over expenditures of $25,247.SU There are a lot of constructive actions that the Board could be taking at this time. Some producers are concerned that the present system of allocating wood orders by the brokers at the mill is unfair. The Board could take control of this better distribution process to ensure a of orders and more reasonable time limits for fulfilling them. The producers would also like to see CIP accept 8-foot logs instead of insisting on 4-footers.The Board could consider sharing the cost of providing the mill with a slasher so that the logs could be cut on arrival. Moreover, the Board could put some thought into what it is going to do with this year’s $25,000 surplus. It is hard to believe that the cost of belonging to the Federation is really the here. But of all the topics discussed It seems that a number of the wood producers resent the fact that the amount of money levied by the Federation on each cord of wood cut and sold by the producers (excluding saw logs) has gone up from 18 cents to 25.4 cents, plus 2.1 cents for research purposes, to make a total levy of 27.5 cents per cord.In other words the Federation is claiming approximately one-third of the levy exacted on pulpwood by the Pontiac Wood Producers’ Board itself. In 1984, the producers paid the Federation levies of $17,254 (and this included an arrears of about $3000) from their total commissions of $74,261 paid to the Board.issue at the annual meeting, this was the one that received the most attention. To be of the benefits of belonging sure, some to the Federation - such having money available for forest management and research - may not have seemed immediately interested in Perhaps part of the Board’s problem with the Federation is due to language, and the fact that much of what comes in from the Federation is neither read nor understood. Now that there is a bilingual member on the Board, perhaps the situation will change, and the Pontiac producers will cease to feel so isolated from the larger situation. The Board can get out of the Federation, but it cannot get out of the province and being out of the Federation won’t help get Pontiac out of the woods.Whose product isn't the real thing’?If exaggerated claims made or implied are the reason for restrictive measures then why not restrict soap, toothpaste, cigarettes and candies?, Wouldn’t a better solution be public education on m®tt*r*°f health self-care?We can all help ourselves by reading the labels on products - the first item listed is always the largest amount n Meanwhile, until our rights and freedoms in this area are re-established please don't tell anyone about spinach. One cup of spinach contains 14,580 international units of vitamin A as .well as vitamins E, K, B2, B1 and C.apparent to those more harvesting wood. But shouldn’t the fact that, as one producer pointed out “We’re making $5.00 more a cord than they are in Ontario” strike a responsive chord?Certainly some of this difference in remuneration is due to the Board’s membership in a provincewide Federation.Would the Board have such a strong voice at the bargaining table if it did not have the backing of the Jo White To all appearances, 1984 was a good year for the wood producers.According to the president, the amount of wood cut by Hope Ledoux The high waters in Pontiac Dear Editor A college for the community After the last flood.Hydro said it would never happen
