WEEK FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 19*#) Anniversary stamps Depict Quebec’s colorful history By Peler McCarthy Some of Canada's Ix-st history was written around one central point, the city of Quebec.Situated on the North Shore of the St Lawrence River at the junction of the St.Charles River, a location which rises 333 feet above the river level, Quebec is the oldest walled city on the North American continent Jacques Cartier, the first European to sail down the St.Lawrence River in 1535.landed at what was then a Huron villai(e named Stada-eopj.Donnaeona, the chief, had welcomed the explorers with open arms It wasn't until I60H however, that the first European settlers under Samuel de Champlain arrived and founded the City Quebec is derived from an algonquin word meaning, "narrowing of the waters" It's at this point that the waters of the St Lawrence widen dramatically on the eastward trek to the Atlantic Ocean The British tried on many ocrassions to take Quebec from the French without success, until, in the summer of 1759, a strong force led by General James Wolfe attacked the walled fortress by land The French, which were led by the Marquis de Montcalm, were defeated at the famous battle of the Aititiveraani \\ N*- You/ fiMM" Preset I heat»* the lining * $>oom Aug.9 - Sept.1 ¦fini neertr our rvt«i immt »ooa mrom mm umiumu f*tf Gaimtf Pwair* Oific Pat OonaaPy August 13 1990 TM founding of Quebec. The issue is beautifully engraved, rich in colour and almost faultless The half-cent denomination depicts the Prince and Princess of Wales, the future King George V and Queen Mary The one cent denomination depicts the principal people of the series, Jacques Car tier and Samuel de Champlain. In addition to knowing this stamp was imperforated, this stamp is also known to have hairlines. In fact, hairlines are not uncommon in both this and the two cent denomination depicting King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The five cent denomination shows Champlain's domain which was his own original design, while the seven cent denomination depicts the principal participants in the battle of the Plains of Abraham The ten cent purple shows Quebec in 1700.The fifteen cent orange is a scene of Champlain departing for western explorations. The final value in the x series is the twenty cent denomination depicting Cartier’s arrival at Stadacona or Quebec with his three ships in 1!)35.Quebec City was also the site for the Quebec Conference of 1864 noted on the three cent dark brown stamp of 1917 depicting the Fathers Of Confederation, a painting by Robert Harris that was destroyed in the Parliament Buildings fire of 1916.The stamp was reissued again in 1927 as part of the series commemorating the 60th anniversary of Confederation. The change in this stamp is that all of the fathers of Confederation as shown in the original painting were fitted onto the stamp. The twelve cent issue depicting the Quebec Bridge in the Scroll Issue of 1928 — 29 is really a story in itself. The Arch and Leaf issue of 1930 — 1932 depicts two denominations of the same stamp which is a view of the Citadel from the St.Lawrence River. It gives one an idea of what invading forces in the 1700’s had to contend with.In 1958, Canada issued a five cent stamp depicting Samuel de Champlain with a background view of Quebec City. The occassion was to mark the 350th anniversary of the founding of Quebec. One of the best modem stamps of a scene of the City of Quebec has to be the two dollar denomination from the 1972 — 1977 definitive series depicting the Chateau Frontenac. This very beautiful hotel has become the centre attraction of tourists visiting the city. The stamp is rich in colour and stands out nicely in a collection of Canadian High value denominations. The varieties that exist are minor and are mainly only slight colour changes.A visitor to the City of Quebec will notice many religious institutes.None of them are depicted on stamps. However, the Université de Laval was so named after the first Bishop of Quebec, François Xavier de Montmorency-Laval de who was depicted on a 1973 eight cent stamp commemorating the 350th anniversary of his birth. The Ursuline nuns were the first religious order to settle in the City of Quebec. Many of their establishments are still in existance and have become tourist attractions. In 1981, Canada issued a stamp of Mother Marie de L’ Incarnation who was the Mother Superior to the first Ursuline Convent. She dedicated herself to educating French and Indian girls.Quebec, rich in history, appealing to the romantic, makes this province a tourist haven. It also offers the philatelist a wealth in the-matics.Cartier & Champlain from The Quebec Conference Second Issue The Citadel as seen from The River Mother Marie de L’Incarnation.Quebec Bethune the Making of a Hero had its world premiere Monday at the Montreal World Film Festival “I can make your life a misery, but I'll never bore you," Norman Bethune, the Canadian surgeon and gadfly who became a hero of the Chinese revolution, once warned his wife Frances. The same might be said of the making of the $18-million film, the most expensive in Canadian history. The Canadian-Chinese-French co-production became such a saga of personality conflict and international relations that it in itself could be a movie script. In fact, it did become a script — Bob McKeown’s critical behind-the-scenes documentary Stran- Will it keep AS beating?RED CROSS Blood Donor gers in a Strange Land Bethune: The Making of a Hero was supposed to premiere at last year’s Montreal World Film Festival.Delayed once again, it premiered at last on Monday in an early morning screening and a VIP-studded evening gala showing. As screenwriter Ted Allan said at a news conference, a major delay stemmed from the fact there were ‘two obsessions” involved in the film's making. One was Allan's.The writer was a close friend of Bethune who followed the doctor to Spain during the Spanish Civil War.WROTE SCRIPT "He was my surrogate daddy,” says Allan, who wrote the original screenplay in 1942 — three years after Bethune died in China. The other obsession belongs to Donald Sutherland, who portrays Bethune in the film. The Canadian actor has also had a long-time fascination with Bethune and in the late 1970s played the doctor in a CBC drama.Although both were obsessed with him, Allan and Sutherland differed in their interpretations of Bethune. To Allan.Bethune was a brilliant iconoclast who was often selfless in his devotion to his patients — treating them for free when they couldn't afford medical help. But Allan’s portrait also showed Bethune as an alcoholic and womanizer, an arrogant, often callous man.“Hell hath no fury as a disillusioned hero worshipper," Allan says.Sutherland, who gives few interviews, is said to have preferred to emphasize Bethune’s accomplishments — his medical inventions, his radical advocacy of socialized medicine in Canada, his life-long struggle against fascism “I thought he was trying to sanitize him,” Allan said at the news conference.Allan says the result combines both outlooks, but the film seems to clearly lean toward his approach SHOWS TEMPER Moments into the film, Bethune is seen screaming at Chinese hotel staff. When he is told the Japanese have blown up a train carrying his medical supplies, he slams his luggage on the ground in a temper tantrum. He mocks the hospital establishment, furiously throwing their surgical tools away during operations and inventing his own, later patented instruments.Sutherland also portrays Bethune’s charismatic side, swaggering through 1930s Montreal in elegantly tailored clothes, ascots and pinkie rings and carrying on affairs with several women despite his great love for his wife. But the flaws don’t cloud what is essentially a portrait of a brave and dedicated man.Bethune opened a free health clinic to treat the poor of Montreal during the Depression.Determined to fight fascism, he headed to the front lines in Spain and devised a mobile blood transfusion service that revolutionized military medicine. The final version is not the one submitted by director Phillip Bor-sos (The Grey Fox). The film’s producers and writer Allan re-edited Borsos’ 2'/2-hour film, shortening it by half-an-hour.The result is a fast-paced movie that intercuts stunningly photographed footage of Bethune’s period in China with flashbacks of his life in Canada and Spain. The film emphasizes Bethune’s year in China, the last of his life, deliberately, Allan says."I felt an incredible transformation took place in Bethune in China.” He stopped drinking, and in the film’s most poignant scene, apologizes to a Chinese doctor for humiliating him.As Bethune tells his Chinese comrades shortly before dying of an infection from a cut to his finger during surgery, "Before we can fight fascism, we must defeat the fascist in ourselves." TOWNSHIPS WKKK KKIDAY.AUGUST 31, \m\ An open letter to Davey-Bob Peterson: ‘We wish you everything you wished us a while back’ Dear-Bob: Couldn’t help noticing that you're up for reelection this Thursday and would li!re to take this opportunity to wish you everything you wished us a couple months back.In spades. We can't vote for you.of course, or even against you, which is more to the point, but we would like to remind you of the time you messed in our back yard and return the favor. You stood in the Newfoundland legislature, Davey-Bob, trying desperately to persuade it to pass the Meech Lake Accord. You told them (and we can still hear your words) that even if the ‘distinct society’ clause did override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it would only do so inside Quebec “and they are for it!” PIONEER PETERSON Around here.Davey-Bpob, folk have started calling you ‘Pioneer Peterson’.Politics is a very shabby business all around but you are always ready to break new ground. You told Newfoundland and all Canada then, that because the ma- Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE jority in Quebec were in favor of overriding the rights and freedoms of the minority, that was good reason to support the Accord. We can’t help noticing now, however, that you are warbling an entirely different tune. You are telling your electorate that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms must be strengthened and the notwithstanding’ clause eliminated.Challenged on that reversal by the kind and gentle interviewers at Maclean’s, you answered; “It’s not me that’s changed; the situation has changed .There was not a sovereigntist agenda in Quebec prior to the collapse of Meech.” I’ll run that by you once more just in case your speed-reading missed it.No sovereigntist agenda in Quebec before the collapse of Meech.Krikey, Davey-Bob, do you know what that means? That means the Meech Lake Accord wasn't really designed to reduce federal powers, increase Quebec sovereignty and keep it in Confederation because Quebec had no sovereigntist agenda. You now go around insisting that Ottawa retain the powers “to advance and defend the national interest" over those of the provinces.GREAT DEFENDER?“I’m a great defender of Canada," you told the interviewers with quite as much truth as modesty.“Starting next spring, we’re going into some very, very tough negotiations. The question is how to keep federal powers intact and keep this country together.” But the more pressing question is how to keep Da vey-Bob’s powers intact and keep his administration together, isn't it?We couldn’t help overhearing some of your electorate wondering if they shouldn’t send you back to the family electronics firm in London.Perma nently. They question the necessity of a $40 million election only three years into a five-year mandate They recall you ousted more than forty years of Conservative rule in the summer of 1986 by joining forces with the NDP to form a minority in September 1987 and cal culate this makes the third election in barely four years But they just don't understand your political problems, do they’’ They forgot that preliminary hearings in the Patricia Starr trial will open about the time the polls close and you have to get reelected be fore any more nasty things crawl out of that particular snake pit For contributing something over 80,000 charity dollars to politicians — your brother notably among them — our Patty faces no fewer than 45charges — eleven for crirm nal fraud. She's no Gordon Liddy, of course, and if she takes the rap she'll go down kicking and clawing, scratching and screaming, gouging and biting She's already filed a civil suit against you for abuse of power, defamation of character, malicious prosecution and negligence. Then there’s the economy to consider You have to get reelected before the recession settles in be cause Ontario has already lost 60 major plants and 15,137 jobs since the beginning of the year and pros pects are gloomy. We hear there are actuull real estate tycoons and billionaire developers in Toronto who just don't know where their next million is coming from They ’re worried sick They 've sup ported you generously over the years and now see projections that Canada's economy will perform worst of all G7 countries Italy not excluded INFLUENCED?NEVER! sounds could be tomorrow’s new craze By Bill Anderson Music Writer NEW YORK (CP) In pop mu sic, where innovation is processed at lightning speed, today's avant-garde can become tomorrow's mainstream hit Irish singer Sinead O'Connor is the most striking example of this phenomenon, but there's a raft of others such as Laurie Anderson, Sonic Youth and Faith No More who have moved recently from the fringe toward the middle In doing so, they've capitalized on one of the dominant trends in pop — a taste for eclectism and ec centncity. At the same time, they’ve faced the classic dilemma of the ambitious avant-garde artist : how toex-pand their audience without losing their integrity During the recent New Music Seminar in New York City, a panel on the state of the avant-garde agreed that the appetite for "art music” has probably never been greater formerly of the cult band Golden Palominos, conveyed a sense of this as she described her recent move up to a major independent label ‘‘I was sitting in my record company's office,” she said, “and it’s this beautiful, stylish, impo sing place and I’ve had about 10 cups of coffee and 1 was just kind of sweating and shaking "And they said : ‘Now Syd, if you can just give us three radio hits on this record, the rest of it can be whatever you want ' And I said: 'Are you kidding? You can’t say a thing like that to me.’ And I continued to throb and sweat and I said : ‘Don't try to interfere with the only happiness I have, which is doing my meagre work.”' For Michael Dorf, owner of the Knitting Factory nightclub in Greenwich Village, the issue is not so much artistic compromise as proper marketing In fact, Dorf’s club has become a leading pur- veyor of avant-garde music through its nightly performance schedules, a syndicated radio broadcast and three albums — released through A and M Records — called Live at the Knitting Factory.MUST SELL Dorf argues that while artistic ideals are the bedrock of the avant-garde, such music has to be combined with commercial savvy or it becomes irrelevant “You can paint for yourself and live in the country and grow cucumbers and live off cucumbers, and that’s fine,” Dorf says.“But if you want to communicate your art, you have to get it out there and the reality is you have to sell it.” Randi Blattberg, president of Venture Bookings in New York, cited this salesmanship approach in the rise of California band Camper Van Beethoven, who have become stars on the college rock circuit.“We booked the first Camper Van Beethoven tour,” she said."and their record at that time was one they released themselves and did all the work on and all the press on and got out to all the radio stations “It was successful because people became curious enough to want to see them at the small club level, and that’s where everybody has to start.” PRESENT IDEA As with other aspects of pop culture —fashion, cars, toys —the successful visionaries in music are often those who present an idea that nobody knew they wanted. Then they have to have it.One of the ironies of this whole process, however, is that once an obscure band becomes well-known it will probably lose some of its original fans. Some followers of the avant-garde like the music largely because few others have found it.Likewise, some avant-garde artists keep up a stiff resistance to popular tastes, charting shifts in trends and staying determinedly on the outer edge with their small coterie of fans.Jerry Leibowitz, director of Bar None Records in Hoboken, N.J., cites one of his recording artists — a band called Miracle Room — as this type of performer.“They don’t have a concern for anything other than breaking conventions,” he said."If they are doing things they think are too structured or too reminiscent of what they hear in popular music, or even underground guitar-based music, they’ll kind of revolt against that and change it around so it will come off as new.“They feel that their pursuit of this ideal is worth more than the type of place they live in or anything else.” Because of these tattered pioneers out on the edge, and the likes of Sinead O’Connor conquering the hit parade, pop music manages to remain vital — and keeps moving forward. But as commercial forces come mining the underground for the next big thing, avant-garde supporters are feeling a mix of anticipation and dread.WANT HITS Alternative singer Syd Straw.Ruth L.McKeage (Psychotherapist & Consultant) 11 years experience Do you have problems?CONJUGAL VIOLENCE OBESITY SEXUAL MID-LIFE CRISIS LOW SELF-ESTEEM CONFUSION AND INNERTURMOIL MARITAL PROBLEMS RELATIONSHIPS Jokes ’n -Jazz bombs at CNE Grandstand By Bill Anderson CP Music Writer TORONTO (CP) — It was billed as Jokes 'n' Jazz, but there was precious little of either on Sunday when comedian Bill Cosby and guitarist George Benson played the CNE Grandstand. There also weren't many people — perhaps H.OOO in a facility that can hold 20,000 or more.Cosby, clad in white yachting trousers and a Blue Jays baseball jersey, was forced to comment on the sparse turnout right off the top “The crowd is small,” he said, "because you are the only people left with money.” H s Easy for him to say, of course.Cosby is a one-man entertainment juggernaut — TV.books, records — and is probably the most recession-proof man on earth W’ithout doubt.Cosby also commands a hefty fee for his hour-long standup routine, which re- volves around the same themes as his TV shows — the heartwarming nature of parenthood and domestic life, and the fun of going to college.Cosby is so concerned with these topics that he gets downright preachy. In fact, he delivers his routine rather like a minister who knows that a little humor makes the message go down easier. And just a little humor it was.SPUN YARN Long stretches of time passed while Cosby spun a yarn about get ting his oldest daughter through college, then another dusty passage about a second daughter who, it turns out.wasn't such a good student, ha ha.Later, Cosby moved into a more successful running gag that played on the idea that romance fades in marriage as physical intimacies become more coarse.Only one small profanity was heard during the performance, but he nonetheless made great hay with that old comedic warhorse — flatulence. To the delight of everyone, he described his wife crossing the living room toward his reading chair at the most inopportune moment, and recalled with voice screeching that “she was standing in the eye of it.“And then her head began to turn, and she started waving her arms, and then she pointed to the dog, and she said ‘Now 1 believe you.’” Cosby also got a lot of yuks walking through an old visit-to-the-dentist routine in which a frantic patient speaks in ornate gibberish as his mouth is turned into a pit of smoke and ashes.INTRODUCE BENSON After that, Cosby quickly introduced Benson and sauntered off the stage. As he went, one couldn’t help thinking that the nearby CNE midway had a lot of suckers, but it didn’t have all of them.Benson began with an instrumental, and it was the signal for many Cosby fans to leave the stadium. The guitarist was a late addition to the bill, presumably because tickets were not selling well, but it was an ill-fated match.Cosby never got the adoring response he s probably used to in Vegas, and Benson had to contend with an au dience that got steadily smaller as Cosby fans decided that ultra-light pop jazz was not their stuff.Benson, to his credit, was a real professional, and played a full 90-minute concert.By the end, he had the faithful clapping along to hits like On Broadway and Give Me The Night. But for much of his performance, Benson put aside his guitar and indulged in sleepy, Johnny Mathis-style crooning.Benson, alas, has been on a career-long slide from Wes Montgomery-influenced jazz toward easy-listening fodder. One more step and it’s Muzak.Interested in joining a group for group therapy? All What did bathers at lake or ocean wear in 1850?TOWNSHIPS WEEK FRIDAY AUGUST 31, !!*»> 5 Beaulne Museum — elegant mansion guarding the past By Sylvie D.Nelson COATICOOK — The elegant Château Norton was built in a residential neighborhood of Coaticook in 1912 and was home to the Nortons, a wealthy industrial family. It was in the late 1800’s that A.O and his son Harry A.Norton patented a ball bearing lifting jack which eventually made their for tune.Mary Helen Norton, the last Norton owner of the house offered it to the Church of England Female Orphan Asylum of Quebec. The institution became known as the Bishop Mountain Home where young girls from outside the city roomed and boarded while attending the high school. After the closure of the high school in 1968, it was sold to the Church Society of the Diocese of Quebec for the small sum of $1.NOW A MUSEUM In 1975, after some renovations, the impressive Château Norton be came the home of the Beaulne Museum which had been located in the Coaticook City Hall building since 1964.The mansion is surrounded by tall, shade trees and a variety of shrubbery, making the impressive residence almost invisible from the street. It boasts an astounding array of chimneys, four in all.each one made from the same stones which line the basement. When looking straight at the house, the south side, or servants’ quarters, is built on much simpler lines than the north side of the house where the Nortons resided.UNIQUE MIX The architecture of the château represents a mix of neo-Queen Ann and shingle style. There have never been any major changes done to either the outside or the interior of the house.Today, its original eight fireplaces and intricate woodwork is still intact and in remarkably good condition, a focal point for admiring visitors. The museum’s first mandate is to illustrate the fashions, fabrics, clothes and accessories of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.So, in keeping with this tradition, Beaulne museum is featuring summer clothes from the early 1900’s.Each room depicts a phase of the pre World War I era.In the elegant parlor, you’ll find five “persons,” each dressed in evening wear.Women are dressed in luxurious, long gowns, three of them apparently chatting over a cup of tea.The only man present in the exhibit is dressed in a svelte tuxedo, top hat in hand. You almost want to find his cape and gloves and invite him out for a bracing tour of the countryside in the covered buggy, he is so very dashing.Very elegant indeed! In the room, there are two organs, both the bellows type needing good strong legs to pump the pedals. But one is smaller, a portable.Perhaps it was brought over for the evening?Across from the parlor is the dining room. The polished glow of china and silver on the magnificent table is the reflection of a warm fire, burning cherrily in the grand fireplace at the other end of the room. The table settings are original and precious antique ware includes some interesting items, a glass and silver oil and vinega r holder for example On the first floor, two rooms are reserved for temporary exhibitions.HAUTE COUTURE OF LONG AGO In the first adjacent room is a family at the beach, complete with sand and picnic basket. The walls a re decorated with 1910-1920 photographs of people dressed for a day of fun on sand and water.Pretty strange styles to our modern eyes.In those days, the bathing suits resembled mostly short dresses as it was improper to show too much skin! The second room features summer dresses from the late 1850's to the early 1900's.Again, photographs from that era decorate the walls.Upstairs, the bedroom features a wooden bed which is small by today's standards. It is somehow difficult to imagine anyone over five feet tall being very comfortable in these shorter and narrower sleeping facilities.Hooked to the bed is a large rosary.A mannequin sits in a chair, obviously ready to retire, clothed in sleep wear of the time An entire room upstairs is dedi cated to O.A.Norton and his fami ly.There is a bust of his son Harry which sits proudly on the mantel Among the memorablilia, a ball bearing jack built by the Norton manufacturer is also featured in the room.A second room apotlights purses and handbags from past eras There is a wide array of them, some large and some small.Last but not least are dolls dres sed in outfits typical of the different religious congregations According to Hélène Ia- Blanc, a contracted researcher for the museum, the outfits are made of the same materials and carry on the styles of nuns at the turn of the century. The items featured in the Beaulne Museum have been either donated or are on loan from indivi- duals “Many organizations donate things they find.'' Le Blanc said Also, the museum sometimes features items which are loaned by-other museums The museum features art exhibi tions with sometimes as many as three or four artists’ work on dis play at the same time They pu blish a program that lists museum features and activities through the calendar year Coaticook could lie an afternoon itinerary for the Eas tern Townships explorer A visit to the famous gorge, a tour of the museum, (pick up a brochure or two while you're there), dinner and dancing at Barde la Théâtre de la Gorge Could tie a day long remem be red. ft TOWNSHIPS WKKK FRIDAY.AUGUST 31.1990 Acadian-Cajun musician Doucet is hot as Jumbalaya By Gwen Dambrofsky EDMONTON (CP) His walrus moustache twitches with suppressed lauKhter as Michael lloucet re members the years he and his band.Beausoleil, played Cajun music for people who had never heard the word Cajun.Until "some bi# «uy from New Orleans burned the fish' and Doucet suddenly found himself doin' a little cookmit of his own "All of a sudden this cuisine thinu kituff " Sometimes it's toukh for Doucet, 39, to take seriously the supposition that rotund chef Paul Prud'homme and his blackened fish may be res-ponsible for vaultink Beausoleil into the musical stratosphere Ima kine Hdith Piaf crediting her career to Julia Child But there it is.Until Cajun-Creole cuisine became the culinary craze of the mid '80s, Doucet was just a fiddler on the goof Now he's as hot as a bowl of jambalaya with two hit records in the stores, a couple of movie soundtracks on his resume and a Grammy nomination on his wall At Kdmonton's re cent folk festival, Beausoleil rated headliner billing.ACADIAN HOOTS Growing up on his daddy’s farm near Scott.La., "about five miles left of Lafayette," Doucet was influenced by a rather odd confluence of musical styles "On my father's side, he had five sisters who spoke French and would sing ballads to me Most of the family on my mom's side had been classically trained, but they played jazz. When both sides got together, it got pretty weird While attending Louisiana State University, where he majored in English literature, Doucet took a course in Anglo-American folk songs and was dismayed that no mention was made of Cajun music or its black brother, zydeco. He confronted the instructor.who dismissed Doucet's musical heritage as a handful of insignificant children's ballads "It wasn't an unusual attitude,” he says with a shrug."At the time, the state history textbooks had maybe two paragraphs about Aca-dians It described them as fun-loving people who work hard ’ Period.I knew what I had to do." STUDIED HISTORY Doucet began researching the history of his Cajun ancestors, who were descended from 17th-century French settlers of Nova Scotia, driven out of the land they called Aca die when they refused to eclare al legiance to the British "I got all this stuff, but I've never published it," he says, “One of these days I will.I got distracted by making friends with all these people I was meeting.” All this time Beausoleil — which includes Doucet's younger brother David.Tommy Comeaux, drummer Tommy Alesi, Jimmy Breaux on accordion and Billy Ware — played bars on weekends.“I never thought I wanted to make that my living,” Doucet confesses.“I just loved it so much, I just did it and had a good time." That didn’t change when an old friend, director Glen Pitre, approached Doucet to score a film he was doing for Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute — Belizaire the Cajun.“Typical Glen, he gave me two weeks to do it all,” says Doucet, whose slight overbite gives his infectious grin a rabbity quality.“It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had.” That led to a gig doing the title song for the 1987 romantic thriller The Big Easy, which capitalized on the Cajun craze by switching the story’s location from Chicago to New Orleans just before production began.PUT OUT ALBUM The next year Beausoleil put out a quirky album called Bayou Cadillac, a funny, funky mix of Cajun, jazz and country. Not only did it sell well, it was nominated for a Grammy. The band members agreed to give up their day jobs — with the exception of Comeaux, a pathologist who splits his time between medicine and music — to see how far they could go.Most recently, Beausoleil recorded a live album at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall called Live From the Left Coast, and Doucet has produced an individual effort called Beau Solo.“We’re at a crossroads,” he says.“Already we’re getting tugs to go to a larger label, and that scares me because you can end up losing control.” As hot as Cajun is right now, he doesn't want to see it pass as a fad.“And this music is too special for that.” Latest news from the Loney Natural Selectionby Frederick Barthelme (VIKING): $24.95.212 PP There is something that is at once unsettling and yet, comforting about reading one of Frederick Barthelme's slender novels or short stories. The author of two story collections and three previous novels, Barthelme might be described as the chronicler of the American shopping centre and the range of stories that take place within their confines every day.He can unsettle us with his surprising flights of pathos, where a simple joyride by a reconciled married couple can turn into a kind of cataclysmic ending that Natural Selection jolts us with.Or he can be a reassuring, calm presence outlining the natural faults that the outdoor barbecuing husband is heir to.In Barthelme’s fourth novel.Natural Selection, the narrator is Peter Wexler, a man who has just turned forty who realizes that he can only find things to complain about in his life.As the book opens he has made a vow that he would do his best to keep his little family — one son, Charles — together by changing his attitude about all he sees around him.“I promised Lily I was going to quit complaining about things, about my job, about the people I worked with, about the way things were at home with her, about our son Charles and the way he sometimes didn’t seem to coming along, about the country, about Nightline and Crossfire, about the mess we live in, the mess we make of our lives every day, about everybody lying all the time, smug and self-satisfied and just close enough to the facts to get by”.In the grip of a mid life crisis, or at least an attempt to make order out of his chaotic, but very ordinary life, Peter finds himself having very philosophical discussions with his nine year old son as they sleep out in the yard overnight. When his son asks him what the problem is, he replies, “Kids are.I don’t want to treat you like a pet, but you’re small and sort of dumb.I realize that’s of necessity reveal and that it’s changing — you’re not dumb compared with other kids, but compared with adults, see?Actually, now that I think about it, you really aren't dumb compared s Natural Selection — Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY with most of the adults I know I don't mean dumb, anyway, but there’s stuff you don't know, see what I mean?” To add an even nuttier ingredient to Peter Wexler’s way of life there is the presence of his wife Lily’s brother Ray, one of those Dickensian minor characters who floats in and out of this family plot with jsut enough regularity to keep the humor intact.Through flashbacks.Peter reflects back on his meeting with Lily and her eccentric brother, Ray.both of whom he meets — where else?— at a shopping centre department store in Houston.Their courtship, typical ly Barthelmian, consists of going shopping and going out to places to eat, often accompanied by weird Ray, who had been living with his sister when the lovers met.As the novel develops, the love, however has begun to wane, and Peter and Lily go through a period of estrangement.Natural Selection is really about the American family — Peter Wexler and his wife Lily, and their son Charles — and how very simple, everyday events can have far reaching consequences.Indeed, most of Barthelme’s books feature lives that find themselves under the closest scrutiny as a character sits in an automobile waiting for his mate to come out with the various condiments required for preparing the great American cookout.Consequently, the most casual events, such as the carefree freeway ride that Peter and Lily take at the conclusion to Natural Selection, are brought under the microscope of intense examination.Truly, for Barthelme’s characters the meaningless things in life can become of major importance, and the larger matters such as love, happiness and security can be easily inverted by something inconsequential. This topsy-turvy world of contemporary America is the crucible for Frederick Barthelme’s humorous yet poignant characters to reveal themselves to us in the air-conditioned comfort of their local shopping centre.RECORDINGS REVIEWED Toy Matinee Toy Matinee (REPRISE — WEA) Nothing toy-like about this innovative songwriting duo that has taken its name from one of the many intriguing songs on their debut release.Toy Matinee is actually Kevin Gilbert — lead & backing vox, guitars and keyboards — teamed with Patrick Leonard — keyboards and background vocals.Songs from Toy Matinee comprise such elec trie topics as a tale about a woman who falls in love with a Vegas El-vis-impersonator (“The Ballad Of Jenny Ledge”), a hilarious send-up/tribute to Salvador Dali ("Turn It On Salvador”), to a poignant song that appears to be about the socio-pathology of homosexuality being rooted in child abuse, ne gleet and lack of friendship (“There Was A Little Boy ").In addition to the ponderous, emotional lyric content of their tunes, the Gilbert/Leonard collaboration moves from one pop musi cal style to another with complete ease.Their sound is augmented by a rhythm section of Brian MacLeod on drums and percussion, Tim Pierce on guitars, and Guy Pratt on bass This ensemble can play eerie Mark Knoplfer figures on the haun ting “Things She Said ”, or parody the sound of the progenitors of his style, 10 c.c., on the wacky “Turn It On Salvador” — which has a clarinet tag on it that sounds like vintage Glenn Miller uut-takes.Perhaps it’s the presence of the young Julian Lennon on the backing to “Things She Said ”, but Toy Matinee can write tunes that have very Beatlesque melodies. As for the vocal blend of Kevin Gilbert and Patrick Leonard, they become another duet in the tradition of Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook. On “Remember My Name” (de dicated to Vaclav Havel), Toy Ma tinee's vocalists excel on one of several songs that could well meet with singles success.Again, on “Queen Of Misery”, a weighty sto-rysong that flashes forth with brilliant word pictures.Toy Matinee borrow a page from Genesis’s long tradition of matching strong melodies with incisive social commentary Not quite as bizarre as groups like the now Fish-less Marillion from England.Toy Matinee nevertheless have a musical equivalent to some of the effects David Lynch achieves in his films.Toy Matinee is a welcome arrival on the Madon-na — and M.C.Hammer-dominated charts.John Doe Meet Hon DoetGEFFEN —
