Trudeau tff become ‘Best on the Box?’ Page H>Jf 2—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1987 Senate comes to over drug bill Who’s I was interested to see this week that The Canadian Rock Mechanics Association will be holding its 6th annual congress in Montreal August 30 to September 3.Which brings me to the question, what exactly does a rock mechanic do?“Could you check the quartz content, rotate the shale and tighten the steering please.” Record staffer Laurel Sheerer suggests it might have something to do with rock music in which case no amount of tinkering by mechanics is going to fix it.Well members of the Senate are really digging in their feet over this new drug bill.It stands to reason. If the price of drugs go up the Senate will be the first group to really suffer. With an average age of 114, senators probably use more prescription drugs than any other segment of society. Can you imagine the uproar if the new bill inclu- ded sleeping pills?Seriously though, the Senate is only exercising its role as a house of “sober, second thought” in an effort to improve Tory legislation.Besides, it’s the first time they’ve earned their keep since Moses lived in Cairo.Well it’s back to squeezing the color button in margarine. For those of you too young to remember, the color button was a little container of dye in every package of white margarine that was mandatory in the dark ages. The margarine was white so unscrupulous stores couldn’t pass it off as butter and the button was sort of orange so customers could mix it with the margarine and pretend they were eating butter.Got that?Anyway, the provincial government has decided consumers aren't smart enough to distinguish between butter and margarine anymore so AUGUST 13 — AUGUST 29 SALT-WATER MOON Written by revert to its original color—white.Thank god our government takes its task as guardian of the consumer seriously. Now if they would only get the mercury out of the rivers, the sulphur dioxide out of our air and the sewage out of Lake Memphre-magogwe could all eat our sandwiches in peace.Get your pens and pencils out, I’ve found a worthy cause. The proposed Evel Knievel and Friends Museum is in trouble. The Butte Montana District School Board is about to turn down Evel’s offer to lease a local school for his museum on the flimsy grounds it might be used by students.Knievel, you will remember, came to fame for a variety of fascinating stunts on a motorcycle including an attempt to jump the Snake River.Don’t these idiots see what they’re doing? This is a slice of Americana?Would they tear down the Smithstonian to widen a highway?Would they dig up Arlington Cemetary for a housing project? No sooner does Michael Jackson announce his return to the touring business than fate deals him another crushing blow. The man Jthat did more for make-up than Mabeline, is being sued for $150 million by “Billy Jean Jackson” who claims the singer is the father of her three children.Jackson of course denies the whole thing — wouldn’t you — and his press agent says the charge is ridiculous.Looking at Michael Jackson.I tend to believe the press secretary. Here are six wines to stay way clear of Generally speaking I try to be as positive as possible in this column.Admittedly, the Société des Alcools occasionally comes under fire but considering some of the decisions made by the government liquor monopoly this is entirely understandable.Today is going to be different, ______________ however.Put it down to the weather or call it end of summer blues.Personally, I’m going to call it Six Wines I Wouldn't Buy.Top of the list is Beaujolais Nouveau.Although, I am always happy to drink it for free at the SAQ’s annual tasting, I wouldn’t spend a penny of my own.Young and fruity it is but there are dozens of wines with the same happy characteristics that cost less and last longer.Baby Duck belongs with all the rest of the children’s wines that were so popular a few years back.Artificially sweetened, over carbonated, alcoholic soda pop. You’ll also excuse me if I ‘pass’ on any of the new wine coolers. This is a personal prejudice concerning the mixing of wine with anything else.I can’t rid myself of the feeling that any wine that has to be mixed with fruit juice, soda water or some other liquid is trying to hide something. In the case of many of the coolers, I rather think it might be the fact that the wine isn't very good.As a rule, I don’t drink, and wouldn’t buy, Australian, Canadian, South African or American ‘Sherry’.This is not so much that the above-mentioned are not perfectly acceptable drinks — in many cases they are excellent — but when real Sherry is available at prices that even I can afford, why settle for an imitation. The same goes for ‘Port’ from any country other than Portugal.Although I have had samples that were quite tasty, none has ever measured up to the quality of the original and — since all wine is dependent upon the climate, grapes, soil and techniques found at the place of origin — it is likely none ever will. Finally I am not about to buy a bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild; first because I can’t afford it and second because no wine is worth the enormous price now paid by collectors, connossieur and show-offs.There are numerous others I could probably list but I imagine I have insulted enough people for one week.I suppose this all goes back to the one rule I have concerning wine: Drink what you enjoy and don’t listen to the critics.Cheers! — futon — futon — futon — futon - futon — Entertainment I H __ crafty smile and signing autographs for American children, led film industry workers through the U.S.Embassy to talk with diplomats about the prospects for a new movie. The star of Top Gun and The Color of Money is on a private visit to the Soviet Union this week to research the possibility of a joint U.S.-Soviet film project, embassy spokesman Marguerite Squire said Wednesday.“It would be a film about a romance, but the script is not written yet,” Squire said.Cruise and the production team accompanying him have been meeting with members of the Union of Soviet Cinematographers, she said. 'It was a very tough decision for me to make.’ TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1987—3 Dennis Trudeau takes over as Newswatch anchor By Laurel Sherrer SHERBROOKE — Dennis Trudeau has been shopping forties and sports jackets lately. No pants; just ties and sports jackets. You’ll have a chance to check out his new wardrobe, not to mention his on-camera news reading style, starting Sept.14 when he takes over from Kathy Keefler as anchor on CBC Montreal’s Newswatch program.Trudeau, the former co-host of CBC Radio's As It Happens p-gram was in the Townships ast week on a promotional tour beiore he starts his new job.Giving up a job that gives him a continent-wide audience and even allows him to be heard on shortwave around the world, was not easy to do, says Trudeau.“It was a very tough decision for me to make,” he says, “but I think it’s the right move.” Although he’ll now be seen and heard only in Eastern Canada and maybe the northern New England states, Trudeau feels moving to Newswatch has given him a “wonderful opportunity" to break into television, a medium he’s had little experience with.GOING TO SCHOOL Right about now Trudeau is attending a week-long “anchor school” offered by the CBC in To- ronto to iearn all about acting naturally in front of the camera. As for journalistic skills, enunciation.voice projection and all that stuff, Trudeau already has about all the training he needs. His first job after university was at the Chronicle-Telegraph in Quebec City, when the newspaper was still a daily. There he learned the basics of general reporting as well as getting a handle on the French language. This was follow'ed by three years as a reporter and editor for Canadian Press, two years at the Gazette, a period of law' studies at Laval University, and a year on the Quebec City bureau of the Montreal Star. His broadcast career began in 1979 at Quebec AM and was followed by two years with Cross-Country Checkup.Four years on Daybreak preceded the two-year stint just finished on As It Happens. All this experience means that there’ll be much more to appreciate about Trudeau’s work with Newswatch than his ties and his announcing style.NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE According to Newswatch producer Karl Nerenberg, CBC was looking for more than just a pretty face and nice voice to read the news.“It’s felt that an anchor person should be a journalist,” he said.“You want to have a feeling that the people you’re listening to have a little bit of thought behind what they’re saying.” Trudeau’s experience talking with people all over the wmrld about events on the international scene not only gives him an edge when it comes to pronouncing foreign names, says Nerenberg, but it will also be helpful to the show’s producers in selecting and editing the international new s.With Trudeau's help, the Newswatch team also hopes to do more of the current affairs reporting they’ve been doing lately, and reach out more into the rural areas of Quebec, said Nerenberg. While he’s going to miss talking to people all over the world, Trudeau is looking forward to certain aspects of his new job.One of these is the fact that he won’t be commuting to Toronto from his Montreal home anymore.“That’s a pretty big lifestyle change,” he said. He’ll be working on a more-or-less normal schedule now, for about the first time in his career.“I’ve never really had a normal get-up-in-the-morning-have-breakfast-with-your-family lifestyle.” Trudeau encourages Township-pers to contact Newswatch with local news items or issues they ’d like to see covered.um i 14 ’ S Dennis Trudeau, former As It Happens co-host, is looking forward to learning all about television news as he embarks on his new career as television anchorman at CBC Montreal. On the cover: Dennis Trudeau stopped by the Record office on a promotional tour last week to talk about his new job.Dancer wins recognition and hits Big Apple MONTREAL (CP) — It could be the storyline from Flashdance or Fame: Ambitious dancer enters talent competition, and after three gruelling days wins over scores of contestants. She then moves to Manhattan and goes to work on Broadway.Kathleen Beauge hasn’t gone that far, but she did take the first prize at the 13th annual Talent America contest, bringing her to the attention of several New York show-business agents.“They said I could dance on Broadway, but not long-distance,’’ said Beauge, an aerobics instructor at a downtown YMCA.“They told me I could get a scholarship at Alvin Ailey (the renowned black dance school) so I wouldn't have to pay for classes.“They said I can’t let time pass by.I can’t let the heat pass.” Earlier this month, Beauge’s heat filled the ballroom of New York’s Roosevelt Hotel as she performed an intense three-minute jazz dance to the Eurythmies’ song The City Never Sleeps.“She was breathtaking,” said competition organizer Jayne Eastwood.“She won out over 350 contestants. She got a standing ovation. It was something I’ve never seen in 13 years.” Beauge went through three days of eliminations before the 15- member jury, made up of agents and casting directors, judged her to be the best adult soloist and overall top performer.GAINS EXPOSURE But the real prize was the exposure.Recent winners of the competition have gone on to act in TV soaps (Christiane Joy Alfonso) and movies (Patrick Dempsey in Meat-balls III).“It’s a big move (to New York),” says Beauge.“I don’t know anybody there. But I want to dance for sure. This is a great opportunity, but it has to he well-planned.And it means leaving everything here.” The urge is definitely there.“I’m 25 now. There’s no way I can wake up at 30 without having danced.I’m working here, it’s nice, it’s comfortable, but on the other hand I know I’ll regret it all my life if I don’t go.” Like many dancers, Beauge is small in stature but she packs a lot of power in her muscled body, displaying control, flexibility and style in the dance routines she has choreographed herself.LA MAISON OU CINÉMA "HILARIOUS AND INVENTIVE." - NEWSWEEK, David Ansen INNER' IS A WINNER!' - ABC-TV, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, Joel Siegel ‘ Steven Spielberg presents Ih» E»j 9h00 At a time of competitiveness, when one’s honor, trustworthiness and marriage prospects could be transformed into hard currency, scandal could make or break fortunes and, consequently, became a weapon used by the unscrupulous. The first act of the Stratford production sets up the situation of two brothers competing for the hand of an heiress. On the surface, Charles Surface is an irresponsible spendthrift and Joseph a model citizen. But the second Surface is, in fact, a fraud scheming with a circle of scandal mongers to besmirch the reputation of his brother The characters are delightful, two-dimensional figures who chatter away in clever 17th century prose which may challenge some festival goers at the start. But Robin Phillips’ comedic orchestration is so vibrant, it can’t fail to entertain. And Douglas Campbell’s entry in the second act, as the brother’s uncle and benefactor Sir Charles, brings the play to life.A frequent visitor to North Hatley, where his in-laws live, Campbell is the well-known Canadian actor who created “The Great Detective” role on CBC.His thespian powers, too big for the tube, are given full scope on stage.Sir Charles' return from India triggers the plot which eventually uncovers the rascal Joseph and redeems his ill-treated brother Charles.Stratford veteran Colm Feore, who plays Joseph, is cur rently specializing in despicable characters. His lago, which we look forward to seeing later in the D’ARTISANAT ET DE VENTE CRAFT SHOW & SALE 4 ième EXPOSITION 9:30 A.M.- 5:00 P.M.SAMEDI/ SATURDAY DIMANCHE/8UNDAY AOUT/ AUGUST 29 & 30 * * * ADMISSION $1.00 US ENFANTS: GRATUIT ** CHILDREN: FREE * PIGGERY THEATRE FUNDRAISER * * * COUNTRY-STYLE LUNCH & REFRESHMENTS AVAILABLE CATERED BY -
