McCall sells the theatre the way he once sold cars.There’s the big pitch about “the bottom line” and “fiscal responsibility.” Figure out the market’s needs, then fill them.And it doesn’t hurt to join a few businessmen’s clubs.McCall knows some “artistes” turn up their noses at his approach, but frankly he doesn’t care.The bottom line is that it works.His Nightcap Productions Inc.has been drawing big audiences in Saskatoon to a weekly theatrical soap opera and a summer Shakespeare festival for the last few years.After some initial skepticism, critics decided they like McCall’s moxie, too.When he decided to do Macbeth with a Central American setting last summer, Sheila Bean, who covers theatre for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, thought it was “a fruit-loop idea.“But it really worked well,” says Bean.“Gordon’s a real promoter.He makes the theatre accessible and exciting.” HE’S A VETERAN McCall has worked with theatre groups across Canada.In the early 1980s, he was artistic director of Winnipeg's Prairie Theatre Exchange and then Saskatoon’s 25th Street Theatre.He quit the latter after only a year.“After 20 years in the Canadian theatre scene, I was very concerned that I was being constantly affected by certain negative factors,” McCall says.“I was involved in theatres that were carrying deficits, which was crippling in terms of being able to do work you felt strongly about.” He was also frustrated by the traditional structure of theatre management.Money is raised and doled out by boards of directors made up of volunteers with no financial stake in the long-term survival of the company.Its members might be motivated by philanthropy, generosity or ego, “but they don’t have a vested interest in the sense that it’s affecting their livelihood.” Soon after leaving 25th Street, McCall’s own livelihood was in jeopardy.While he was working to get Nightcap going, he took a day job selling cars.It turned out to be a seminal experience.MIX WITH OTHERS The key to being a good salesman, McCall discovered, was to become involved with the community at large.Hang out with other business people and potential customers.Join a hockey league.In the theatre, the opposite
