March 26,2009 page 3 - TALK - Introducing Gabriel Paglia: Like Father like son Maurice and Tanya Singfield Special To The Record We are very happy to welcome Gabriel to our team.Our youngest host so far! He is only eight years old, and he accompanies his father, Steve Paglia, to the station for the recording sessions of Steve’s program, “Mostly Canadian Unplayed”.Steve Paglia has been an actor and musician (guitarist) with absolutely no background in radio, but was eager to jump on the bandwagon when the opportunity presented itself, a fun thing to do.He brought his son with him to th studio and now Gabe has started co-hosting the show.He was slightly reticent at first, but with every session he becomes more comfortable with the process and more forthcoming with his input.Gabe is a student in grade two at Knowlton Academy.His favourite subject is math.In his spare time he likes to play video games and he enjoys the ski days at his school, in addition to playing hockey, soccer and baseball.His main objection to school is the homework.In his opinion, no homework at all would be much better! He hasn’t really thought about what he would like to do in the future, but at his age, he’s got plenty of time to decide.By the way, Gabe’s mother is Sara Biggs, who is involved with CIDI as well, she played at a fundraiser for the station a couple of years ago.Now I don’t know about the demographics of our listening audience as yet, but 1 think it’s pretty cool that our volunteers range in age from eight to over eighty! It’s truly a radio station for all of us to become involved with and for all to enjoy.What is Radio Communautaire Missisquoi (RCM): a radio station, TV production company or an events promotion organization?It's people.That’s all.And, people make up communities sharing space on this earth.If we couldn’t share our lives through common experiences we wouldn’t be able to accomplish a thing.Every member of RCM has a responsibility to respect each other and to work together.The challenge of any organization is for its members to get along.Together, in harmony, we can make a difference.RCM would not be here today if it weren’t for its volunteers.And, no one volunteer is more important than the other.We are all pieces of the same puzzle.The puzzle has been solved and will continue to be a collaborative work as long as we remain friends and continue to share the experience of community radio.This is my hope as RCM’s director general.But, as we move forward and capture the imaginations of our community we take on even more responsibility, continuing to provide a special voice, our own voice, one that reaches out and touches not only ourselves but all of our listeners.There is no escaping responsibility once we have engaged each other in a common good.And if we do, it will always seek us out, encouraging us to do the right thing through suf- fering the consequences of having shirked it in the first place.Oh, that was good enough, I was sick, I wasn’t available, I didn’t have the time and nobody will notice anyway.Excuses, excuses, at CIDI we don’t believe in excuses, and even if no-one else notices, we do.We care about the quality of our productions, including the ads.This is what RCM / CIDI 99.1 FM is all about.It’s about creating confidence in our volunteers and listeners, and above all it’s about respecting who we are.We aim to be the best that we can be with the limited resources we have.Most of all, we love all of our volunteers, without whom this project would be impossible.So thank you one and all, for all of your contributions and thanks a lot Gabe, for joinng the team.If you are able to pick up CIDI in your area, please check out the Paglias on Mostly Canadian Unplayed, and let them know what you think by calling the station.I’m sure they would welcome your suggestions and be only too happy to play your favourite tunes.They are being who they are on CIDI 99.1 fm and waiting to hear from their listening audience.Once again we invite you to participate in a great new beginning.Help build a great community by calling 1-888-539-2098 or 450-242-9873.Become a member and volunteer.Come and express yourself, make some new friends, and most of all, it’s really a lot of fun! and second, if Porphyry’s claims of innocence are to be believed, why would someone go to such elaborate lengths to have him tossed from the club?As an ex-lathe operator Sixsmith doesn’t exactly move in the same circles, and he’s not at all sure that he’s best placed to get to the heart of the matter.However, with his finances in disarray and clients thin on the ground, Joe decides to set aside his prejudices and try to help his obviously-distraught client.In order to infiltrate the club and uncover its secrets, Sixsmith, who has never played the game, masquerades as a prospective member.He soon finds himself being challenged to a game by three of the club’s best golfers, the result of his less-than-perfect understanding of the term ‘scratch.’ His abilities to dissemble and procrastinate are sorely tested as he strives to prevent being unmasked.As he moves uneasily among Luton’s power elite, Sixsmith learns that the THE ROAR OF THE BUTTERFLIES REGINALD HILL T h 168-E Queen Street Lennoxville, QC Email: blackcat@netrevolution.com Tel.819-346-1786 g 30% OFF BEST SELLERS EVERY SAY Sherbrooke's English Language Bookstore - Bishop's University Bookstore 2600 College St., Sherbrooke, Q.C.Phone: 819-822-9600, ext.2241 *Selected Best Sellers.www.bishops.bkstr.com stakes seem to be getting higher: a young greenskeeper has disappeared.Are the two events related?Joe senses that he might be getting in over his head, but it is too late to back out.A stranger to the games being played both on and off the course, Joe will soon discover that in golf as in life, hazards are not limited to water and bunkers, a good lie is one you can get away with, and sometimes nothing is out of bounds.Stroke of genius, or par for the course?The Roar of the Butterflies will especially resonate with those who, even as we speak, are dusting off their clubs, polishing their golf shoes, and looking wistfully out the window for the errant robin.That said, it will also appeal to mystery fans who are simply in search of a good read.Reg Hill owes much of his success to the fact that his novels are character-driven, and his characters—at least his protagonists—are invariably engaging.The juxtaposition of working-class Joe Sixsmith against the movers and shakers of local society opens up a mine of comic opportunities, and Hill exploits them for all they’re worth.We are drawn to Sixsmith by his naïveté, his loyalty to his client, and his willingness to carry on in the face of obstacles that would dissuade a lesser (or more worldy) man.Hill also handles setting with the skill of a seasoned veteran.The plot itself is secondary, and the solution is obvious almost from the start; it is Joe Sixsmith’s character, and his interaction with those around him, that form the heart of this novel.The Roar of the Butterflies is an entertaining read, light divertissement from the altogether more depressing events of the real world these days, with a grace note of cosmic justice saved for the very end.Jim Napier can be reached at: jnapier@sherbrookerecord.com .'.S I ' ¦ w-.Megan Mullally TALK OF THE Townships March 20 - March 26, 2009 page 5 coverstory ‘Motherhood’ LO L Just from her award-winning work as Karen on “Will & Grace,” it’s clear that Megan Mullally would not be the typical mom.The lively actress-singer demonstrates that as one ol the women fronting “In the Motherhood,” an ABC comedy series premiering Thursday, March 26.The show has an atypical source for its stories: the general public, since script ideas are drawn from peoples actual experiences submitted on the program’s Web site (www.inthemotherhood.com).Mullally plays Rosemary, a serial-bride nonconformist whose behavior might not be deemed the best influence on her teenage son, Syd (Ryan Pinkston).To the great surprise of struggling fellow-mom sisters Jane and Emily (Cheryl Hines, Jessica St.Clair), Syd appears better equipped to field life’s daily challenges than his mother.“I wouldn’t have wanted to play another character similar to Karen Walker,” two-time Emmy winner Mullally says of the high-pitched-in-allways part she’s best known for, “but beyond that, !’m really not super-picky.I ’ve seen a lot of actors who were on long-running shows kind of get paralyzed, afraid to make the next move and (worried) whether it’s the right or wrong one, then you just never hear from them again.“My approach is much less scientific: If something comes along that feels like it would be good to do, then I do it.The great thing about this is that we have great chemistry in the cast.That’s something we had on ‘Will & Grace,’ too, and it’s rare.You can’t go into something expecting that, but right now, I think that’s our ace in the hole.“ Not a mom in real life, Mullally also appreciates “In the Motherhood” taking its creative direction from “anything anyone wants to submit -their stories about kooky, crazy family things.I watched the Web series, and I thought it was really cute.” Mullally adds that ABC wants its “Motherhood” to be “edgier” than the Web forerunner, “and it’s still evolving, as is my character.She wears leather jackets and motorcycle boots; she's a tough mama, and she’s 50 and she owns it.I like playing people who don’t have the same self-censorship that others have.It’s not that this woman says mean things to other people; she’s just more adventurous and a risk-taker, which I like.” “Saturday Night Live” alum Horatio Sanz and RonReaco Lee (“Madea Goes to Jail”) also are in “In the Motherhood,” which relies in part on improvisation, another big lure for Mullally.“Basically,” she explains, “we get a script, then we have a rehearsal, then we rehearse again and improvise off the script.Then the writers take some of our improvisations and incorporate them into the script, we’ll shoot that as written, then we’ll do takes where we improvise.It gives us a lot of room to experiment and have fun.” wèblink we’d liketosee BY ELAYNE LAKEN Still humming that tune from last night’s “Cold Case” but can’t figure out what song it is?Visit www.tunefind.com/show/Cold+Case You’ve missed the most recent “Dancing With the Stars” tour, but you can be first in line to know about the next one.Check out www.dancingwiththestarsontour.com/ What does Joss Whedon’s writer brother Zack Whedon (“Fringe,” “Dr.Horrible's Sin-galong Blog”) find funny?Watch his video picks at www.eguiders.com/profile/zack_ whedon Love “Looney Tunes” animator Chuck Jones?Learn all about him through audio, video links and more at www.coldbacon.com/jones.html Sometimes one hour of “Friday Night Lights" a week just isn’t enough.Fans give the show 360-degree coverage at www.friday-nightlightsonline.com Whether on big or small screen, kids love penguins.Kid-oriented penguin activities, facts and photos can be found at www.kidzone.ws/animals/penquins/index.htm “Da Kink in My Hair” is a Canadian sitcom based on the play of the same name by Trey Anthony.Half-hour episodes from the show’s second season air Thursdays on Global Television Network.The show centers on Novelette “Letty” Campbell, the Caribbean-Canadian owner of a hair salon in downtown Toronto.The employees of Letty’s salon are a tight-knit bunch.They’re always there for one another, whether it’s to crack jokes or offer an ear and sound advice for problems in their personal lives.This season, Novelette is romantically involved with Richard, whose ex-wife and family get in the way.To complicate matters, Cedric, the father of her son, Dre, re-enters Novelette’s life, causing a love triangle for her.But that’s not the only drama at Letty’s;
