The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome—Missisquoi Community works to preserve church Philipsburg Church one of oldest operating Methodist chapels in Quebec By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent St-Armand West High on the hill overlooking the eastern shore of Missisquoi Bay stands a simple stone church that may be one of the province’s unique architectural treasures. The Philipsburg United Church is not only one of the oldest continuously operating Methodist chapels in the province of Quebec, it may also be a rare extant example of a Methodist meeting house. However, the congregation at the Philipsburg United Church has declined to the point where services are held only six to eight times a year and, as a result, the funds required to conduct extensive restorations are beyond the parish’s means. As a result, local United Church volunteers have turned to the Fondation du patrimoine religieux du Quebec to secure funding to preserve this unique religious monument. The foundation was created as a result of lobbying by Interfaith Heritage Association Living Stones. It submitted a partnership proposal to Quebec’s Culture and Communications Ministry to ensure the financing of the preventive maintenance and development of religious heritage throughout the province.SEE CHURCH, PAGE 13 '**¦“*•» WAV, B - • CAROLINE KEHNE/CORRESPONDENT The congregation at the Philipsburg United Church has declined to the point where services are held only six to eight times a year.Lads & Lassies of the Dance CAROLINE KEUNt/CUKKhM'UNUENT Irish dancers Warren and Brenna Haydock gave a demonstration of traditional Irish dancing at the Philipsburg Royal Canadian Legion's St.Patrick’s Day supper. The brother and sister team, grandchildren of Legion president Audrey Paige, travelled with parents Doug and Terry Haydock from Guelph, Ont., to perform for the Philipsburg crowd. The sibling duo study with three-time world champion Irish dancer Grant Smith and have already competed in their age categories in North American national competitions.- Caroline Kehne, Record Correspondent, Philipsburg.Pierre Marziali Pharmacist Hours: Mon., Tues., Wed.9-8 p.m.Thurs.& Fri.9-9 p.m.Sat 9 - 5 p.m.408 South St, Cowansville 263-2171 ESSAÏM V Always at your service -\r m VwLDEfjTHEATRE For your reward miles v\.choose KR all the way Open Daily 8-10 p.m.472 Knowlton Rd.Knowlton 243-6692 104 N.Main St.Albans, Vt.MARCH 16 Brad Pin 4 Julia Roberts m HH THE MEXICAN 7 & 9:20.Mat Sat.Sun.: 2 to MARCH 22 ™” SEE SPOT RUN 0 6 Mat Sat, Sun : 2 J4 Chris flock à E3 DOWN TO EARTH 7:30 & 9 Mat Sat.Sun.: 2 Steven Seigalin (71 EXIT WOUNDS 7,9.Mat Sat., Sun.: 4 Coming: Traffic, CraucMng Tig*, Maori Braatora, Spy KMi Résidence pour les Aînés / Retirement Residence Long term or convalescent stays with 24-hour nursing care yv 28 Mount Echo, Knowlton (450) 242-4663 page 2 Wednesday, March 14, 2001 Brome County News Brome County Community Billboard Community Calendar March 15 The Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 77, 77 Lewis St., Waterloo, will hold their annual St.Patrick’s Day luncheon from 11:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.Adults, $5; children under 10, $2.50.Music with Vel and Norm.Everyone welcome! I expected to find a dreamy-eyed group lost in the desert.Instead, I was surprised by a well-organized and widely-supported group (all local organizations and the Townshippers’ Association, among them) that had three years of solid activities. They had done low-power experimental broadcasts at fairs, held plays and concerts, and had signed up many members.Their goal: to set up a community radio station in their area that would broadcast mostly in English, but also in French and some third-language programs, with studios in Sutton and Knowlton, doing live broadcasts and lots of local music. They wanted to exchange programs with CJMQin Lennoxville and CFLX in Sherbrooke. But before they could submit an application, they would need to find a frequency, an antenna site and some funding. They hired an engineer, Peter Cahn, an old-hand in the radio business, a unique talent who has tried to retire for at least three years.Peter, in his time, engineered the first community radio station in Canada, Montreal’s multilingual I s 4 ft 4 Cifé-roto-rtrrwt LE CAFE FLORAL Rod the wee leprechaun who holds the pot of Gold!
