she loves dandelions. And once the snow disappears, if it ever does, it will be the perfect time to hone your appetite with a tasty plate of nature’s free greens.Elaine is a botanist, involved ih many projects, including the Alberta Native Plant Council and the Federation of Alberta Naturalists.“This is not a meal,” says Elaine.“It’s just an opportunity to taste.” She doesn’t eat wild dandelions herself because she’s afraid of weed sprays.“But last year at the festival we had some dandelions that we knew were clean. We tried dandelion waffles, snacks and tonic.Later we made dandelion salad and a stir-fry — they were excellent.” However, when the plant gets older it’s very bitter, tough and stringy.Just in case you don’t know a dandelion from a lily, these are long, toothy-looking leaves, growing in a circular cluster and joined at the base of the stem. For the next week or so, bright yellow flowers will appear on separate hollow stalks that bleed a milky sap.The leaves and roots are edible, and the blossoms can be used to make wine. The best leaves for eating are the young, tender ones, harvested before flowering occurs. If you want to try dandelion coffee, dig the roots early in the fall.Medicinal uses: Dandelion leaf tea is an excellent remedy for premenstrual water retention.Dandelion roots have mild laxative properties and im- prove digestion.Dandelion leaf tea: Pour 1 cup (250 mL) of boiling water over 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of dried (or 2 tablespoons/25 mL of fresh) dandelion leaves and steep for 10 minutes in a covered pot.Drink 3 cups (750 mL) daily for as long as you feel bloated.Dandelion root tea: Simmer 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of dried dandelion root (or 2 tablespoons/25 mL) of fresh) in 1 cup (250 mL) of water for 15 minutes in a covered pot.Drink 1/2 cup (125 mL) 15 minutes before meals to improve digestion.Fresh dandelion leaves: Eat as you would any bitter green, mixed with milder greens in a salad, or grilled and drizzled with a little balsamic vinegar and olive oil.JUJ m New tAi/arc^uide Restaurant! Jamie Zachary Sherbrooke comedian Will Davis has quickly become a force on the Canadian comedy scene. After performing at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal last year, and maintaining a busy schedule of club and corporate gigs across the country over the last three years, Davis is now taking on his biggest challenge to date. The local stand-up comedian has created, produced, hosted and starred in the CBC special Comedy Night in Canada, scheduled to air tonight at 9 p.m.Davis developed the concept for Comedy Night in Canada just a few yearsago. It began as a live two-hour event, playing to sold-out audiences in Vancouver.Yet after CBC taped it for radio broadcast in 2002, the show evolved into a one-hour stand-up special for CBC television.Recorded in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax, Comedy Night in Canada features an all-star roster of headlining comics, including Mike MacDonald, Brent Butt, Peter Kelamis, Derek Edwards, Shaun Ma-jumder, Irwin Barker and Tim Rykert.Along with hilarious stand-up comedy, viewers will be taken along for the full hockey experience with “post game” interviews and intermission segments.Included are mock-ups of the familiar Hockey Night in Canada features the Satellite Hot Stove and Coach’s Corner with a twist on Ron MacLean and Don Cherry — played with side-splitting accuracy by David Mackay and Kelamis.“In Quebec, you have to love hockey.c’est la loi,” says Davis, who is the sixth of eight kids.“As Canadians, we just can’t get enough of hockey. We knew we had to turn to our national broadcaster, CBC, for this TV special - it’s just such a great fit.” A true die-hard Hab fan, Davis even made sure that when he left home in Sherbrooke and moved to Montreal, he lived just two blocks from the Forum so he could smell the hot dogs.“I was even in the parade carrying banners when the Canadiens moved from the Forum to the Molson Centre,” he adds. For more information on the CBC special, visit the year for the students, because they can meet others from other bands from all over Quebec and hear them play," said Beaulieu.“It’s a condensation of musical resources, if you like.” That's exactly the festival’s mission, now in its 74th year - to facilitate meetings promoting the exchange and diffusion of musical ideas. And where better to do it than at the largest get together for musicians aged 10 to 18 in the country? But it would be misleading to suggest Beaulieu doesn’t have at least one eye on the prize. The art and music specialized Sherbrooke school will field seven ensembles in the competition: Concert bands, stage bands and string orchestras for both Mitchell, the junior half of the school, and Montcalm, the senior half, plus the Mitchell and Montcalm Symphony.“Every year we manage to leave the festival with a few awards,” said the school’s music director modestly. As for this time, “we’ve prepared as we should, so it should be a good year,” he said.“We’re very optimistic." In addition to the all-day Friday and Saturday competitions, the festival has several evening concerts. On Saturday at 8 p.m., Maurice O’Bready Hall plays host to the National Youth Band, comprised of the finest young wind musicians from across the country.Selected by audition tapes, the band members received the concert music about a month ago, and arrived a week ago to put it all together with conductor Alain Cazes.Cazes, who teaches conducting at McGill University, directs the school’s wind ensemble, as well as playing tuba in Montreal’s Metropolitan Orchestra. These credentials were plenty to get him the national honour, performed by someone new each year, including the Sherbrooke Symphony’s own Stéphane Laforest in 1997.“We’ve got this real belief that we should be exposing our good young Canadian musicians, and we’ve never had to go to the States yet or England. We have enough in Canada,” joked Jim Forde, president of the Canadian Band Association and Manager of the National Youth Band. With only a brief but concentrated period for preparation, Cazes’s task is not easy.“The main job is really trying to create a team.To get everyone going in the same direction, to produce a sound, work on intonation, types of articulation, phrasing and all the musical elements — to grow together. This is a challenge with musicians who come from all different areas.” He noted, however, that the diversity of the 56 musicians is overcome by their talent and zeal “They’re extremely co-operative, and they’re so interested in making music.” As is tradition, Yamaha Canada will foot the bill for a professional feature soloist to join the National Youth Band. This year, for the third time, it will be Chambly resident Alain Trudel, a trombonist whose slide has taken him around the world. The Youth Band’s program for Saturday evening is varied, including Holst’s Second Suite and a wide range of contemporary works. One, by McGill doctoral student Nik Kambeiz, is so new “the ink is drying on the paper,” said Cazes, who sees it as part of his duty to introduce tomorrow’s stars to a broader repertoire than they might get in their high schools and universities. The National Youth Band concert is only one of three taking place Saturday night.Under the festival tent on the University’s campus, the Steve’s Music Store Pop competition finals will feature a number of student acts in the rock and punk genres, demonstrating the wide range of sounds that can come out of the bell of a wind instrument.Ska band Yelo Molo, with former festival participants Stéphane Bédard and Sébastien Lamer, wall headline. The Granada Theatre will simultaneously host the weekend’s finest concert and stage bands. The stage bands, which generally blow jazz, will also be on the bill tonight at the Granada. On both Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) a taste of Montreal will arrive in the form of a free tam-jam near the tent on campus. All spectators 10 and under are free to all events. For the rest, a weekend pass ($26; $15 for just one day) gets you into the ongoing performances around campus Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.to 10 p.m., and into the shows at the Granada.Tickets to the tent and National Youth Band concerts are sold separately by calling 819-820-1000.For a complete schedule of events, visit www.festivaldeshar-monies.com. THEi RECORD TALK May 16-May 22, 2003 page 5 Five questions with Jacqueline Plante Q&A By Nancy Nourse Record Correspondent Sherbrooke Since the 1990’s, plastic artist Jacqueline Plante has exhibited both collectively and as a solo artist in Europe, New York, Toronto and Quebec. After teaching plastic arts in the Abitibi region, she has returned to her roots in the Eastern Townships area. The Record had the opportunity to sit down with Plante at her studio: The Record: Each of your creations seems to exude a life or personality of its own.Is this your intention?Plante: “I find nature an endless source of inspiration. The spaces, the lighting, the vegetation and the clouds are already forms of beauty. This natural sense of colour, emotion and rhythm may have something to do with their personality.1 just help it along a little.” The Record: Your work uses different techniques of engraving to achieve the desired results.Would you explain the process of‘lithography sans eau’ to us?Plante: “I start by drawing my design on an aluminum plaque with a solution of printers’ ink diluted with rubbing alcohol.I rinse this with propane fuel, allowing it to dry before coating the plaque with a gouache-like paste made from silicone caulking and paint thinner.Putting on three coats of this mixture, drying or baking each coat with a paint gun, my creation is now permanent. It is then centered on this manual press, covered with paper and put through the press.I use pencil crayons to add a little colour, but sometimes I prefer to just leave it black and white.” The Record: Collagraphy is also one of the techniques that you use.How is it different from lithography?Plante: “Collagraphy is also done on aluminum plaques, but the design is etched into it with a sharp instrument. The ink, in its thick form, is applied directly to the plaque, using tiny cardboard or plastic squares. It doesn’t really have to be exact as the excess is rubbed off with a piece of rough cheesecloth. It is important to wipe the plate off as evenly as possible.Excess ink in any one spot will make an ugly splotch when put through the press. The plaque is then placed in the press covered by presoaked paper. The finished product is placed on a flat surface, covered by a clean sheet of heavy paper and left to dry under the weight of several large books.” The Record: Does all your work have to do with aluminum plaques?Plante: “No, I enjoy working with oil and acrylic paints as well. Some of my pieces are created by covering a solid surface with modelling clay that has been slightly thinned.Just before the surface dries, I etch my design. The rough surface must then be sanded, acrylic paint is then added to bring out the personality of the design, creating a 3-D effect.” The Record: Why do you think there are not more artists who use the engraving process?Plante: “Not everyone likes to be up 1'* .¦** T' NANCY NOUR.SE/CORRESWJNDENT Plastic artist Jacqueline Plante works on not really a very complicated one, but it involves a lot of precision. The surface must be just right, treated in just such a manner and dried for a specific length of time for it to be successful. It took me a year before I was happy with the results. Many others have given up long before that.” New Antique & Gift Shop in Magog W/ th/ntv N.H.Library hosts summer exhibit Staff North Hatley Library’s deep enough to sound thrillingly original despite tossing everything from MC5 to disco strut into the pot.The first half of Fever to Tell is unrelenting, with Karen O yelping like a coked-up Siouxsie Sioux and all manner of fuzz-drenched guitar cacophony being spat out by Nick Zinner.Maps and a hidden Velvets-ish ballad are striking for their humility in light of the anarchic whirlwinds that came before, ensuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs don’t succumb to the cartoon antagonism that could have been their downfall.— C.N. iTHEi RECORD May 16-May 22, 2003 page 9 TALK Matrix’s Moss is one tough cookie Movies Vancouver native sucks it up for role as Trinity in Reloaded By Jamie Portman CanWest News Service Forget about the actual filming of a Matrix movie.Vancouver’s Car-rie-Anne Moss now knows that even the training process can be dangerous.Even before she left for Australia to begin work on The Matrix Reloaded, she embarked on a gruelling six-week physical regimen to ensure that she could “really, really, really kick some ass” in the role of Trinity, the leather-clad female warrior who is at the forefront of the human race’s battle against a machine-dominated universe. But that training session proved short-lived when she broke her knee during the first week.“I was doing a wire move and I don’t even remember which one,” she reports. All she knows is that she was in an elevated situation and that she took a fall.“I had a bad landing and I broke my leg — the upper part of my leg just smashed into my knee.” Instead of seeing a doctor immediately, she went into denial.“I drove home and put my leg up.My knee was like — huge.I was like — it’s fine.I didn’t want to accept that I might not be able to train.1 got myself amped up to actually go back to work.” So she went to bed and drove to work the next day — at which point she was ordered to see a doctor who reported that Moss was fine and then changed her mind after starting to move the swollen limb around.“I screamed and yelled at her, and she was really nasty!” Moss says critically.Still, the pain was enough to send her to a specialist who finally ordered an X-ray and discovered a fracture. That meant Moss had to sit out eight weeks of the six-month training period, but she says it was probably helpful.“It made me aware that even in a movie you can hurt yourself, and I needed to know that.” The lesson she learned was to be extra vigilant - not just in preparing for the soaring martial arts battles on the wires which are a hallmark of the Matrix films, but also in coping which the sequences which terrified her most — a tense, 14-minute freeway chase which would require her to hurtle a motorcycle into oncoming traffic.Unlike costars Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, Moss hates motorcycles. But she says both these ac- tors were a tower of strength to her in helping her meet the challenge.“They really encouraged me because I have a real fear of them, and they understood and respected my fear. But you know, it’s candy to them.” Still, even after doing the scenes, the fear remains.“It is wonderful to overcome a fear, to actually do something in spite of your fear.My fear is still there.I wouldn’t do it again.I don’t like motorcycles.I think they are dangerous.I understand loving them and loving the wind in your hair and the freedom and all that, but I prefer a car.I prefer to drive fast in a car.” Trinity is more lethal in the new film. The opening sequence has her crashing spectacularly through a high-rise window and engaging in an aerial shooting battle with a ruthless adversary. She is also sexier — although she she’s surprised at the rumours, prevalent on the Internet, that The Matrix’s preoccupation with black leather and latex indicates a sado-masochistic subtext.“You’ve got a dirty mind,” she tells one reporter.“I never thought about that to be honest É I’m kind of naive, I guess.” In the course of the movie, she’s also involved in a passionate sexual encounter with Keanu Reeves, reprising his role of Neo, the ex-computer hacker turned saviour of the human race.It took three days to film, and in Moss’s view “it was quite tastefully done.” Moss says she strongly relates to Trinity as a character, and admires her faith, strength and her determination to uphold higher personal beliefs.“I’m a pretty fierce person if I believe in something, if I believe in someone." But she also says there’s a tender side to her.“I’ll like argue with anyone, yet I'm at the same time completely the opposite and really soft and squishy and emotional and a big crybaby.” CANWEST NEWS SERVICE Vancouver native Carrie-Anne Moss embarked on a gruelling six-week physical regimen to ensure that she could ‘really, really, really kick some ass' in the role of Trinity.Cinéma showtimes effective MAY 16TH TO MAY SSND X-MEN 2 (FV) (G » — Every day: IS 30.15 35, 18:35.Sl:35 THE MATRIX RELOADED (I3Y « violence} Every day 1245, 1600, 19:15, 2215 X-MEN 2 (OV) (G •• Every day: 1240, 2145 1545, 1840.4204, boul, BErtrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 021-9099 uiumj.galaxycincmas.com LES INVASIONS BARBARES (I3Y) Every day: 1245, 1300, 1545, 1600 1845, 1900,2130,2140 LA MATRICE RECHARGEE ( I3Y * violence) Every day: 1215, 1300, 15:30, 16:30.1845.1945,21:50 ASSEZ AVEC LAMOUR EVERY DAY 12 55.15 55.1855,21:40 GARDERIE EN FOLK (G) Every day except Sun: 1305.1605, 1905, 21:35 Sun: 1305, 1605 WW€ • Judgement Day SUNDAY MAY 18 from 7 p.m.mm 11187 PAGE 10 TALK OF THE Townships May 16-May 22, 2003 Station Guide 6AM 6:30 7AM 7:30 8AM 8:30 9AM 9:30 10AM 10:30 11AM 11:30 l'.'H.V.'l B News (CC) News (CC) Early Show Crossing Over Crossing Over Dr.Phil Price Is Right A (CC) 171QH B News Today Live With Regis and Kelly Other Half mri q CBC News: Morning (CC) Cyberchase Arthur Clifford-Red Dragon Tales Rolie Polie Olie (:16) Little Bear Save-Urns! was hit with a bad case of pneumonia.A lot has happened to Kershaw since his last album, not the least of which included his controversial marriage to singer Lorrie Morgan at the end of 2001.It was reported by the media that this marriage would kill both Kershaw and Morgan’s career, but I think that the rumors might have been started by people inside the industry. Most of Kershaw’s fans were impatiently waiting for the new album titled I Want My Money Back. This collection is Kershaw’s seventh, and I think it is a perfect comeback for an artist who hasn’t been too successful commercially over these past four years. The album is excellent as it offers a wonderful blend of contemporary country, his love for traditional music and his own Cajun roots. The result translates into a string of upbeat songs which will definitely have an impact on radioland.1 Kershaw has a brand new recording contract with Koch/Audium Records, and I Want My Money Back is his first release on the new label.Over the past three years, Audium has signed a few notable country artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Daryle Singletary, Ricky Van Shelton and The Oak Ridge Boys.Producer Richard Landis’ first collaboration with Kershaw proves very successful. It is clear when you listen to this album that Landis had a special understanding of Kershaw’s talent and emotions, which are well showcased.Often vocally compared to George Jones, Kershaw has a unique style, but at times you can hear in the artist’s voice what an influence Jones has been in his life and for his music. You can also clearly identify his Cajun roots and ‘joie de vivre’ on many of the up-tempo tunes.Entertaining always came naturally for Kershaw, who started playing clubs and Honky Tonks when he was only a teenager. He grew up in the Cajun country of Louisiana, the oldest of four children.Mercury Records signed him in 1990, and shortly after he released his debut album Don’t Go Near The Water. It soon became platinum, and with his versatility, charisma and vocal talent he became one of the biggest names in country music through the 1990’s.Since his debut in 1991, Kershaw has remained one of the great country singers. His popularity was thanks to a chain of major hits on the country music charts, such as ‘She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful’, T Can’t Reach Her Anymore’, ‘National Working Woman’s Holiday’ and ‘Cadillac Style’.The first single released from 1 Want My Money Back, the title track, is a cranky fun tune about the high price of everything today. There’s a lot of fun numbers on this new collection, also including the airy ‘Miss What’s Her Name’ about a guy who’s interested in the new girl in town while she doesn’t even notice it.In the same vein is ‘Sunday Morning On Bourbon Street’, and the let’s have some fun ‘Beer, Bait and Ammo’ which is an anthem of sort for all the country rednecks. The album also offers a few nostalgic songs such as ‘Metropolis’ ‘Stitches’ and the very touching ballad ‘The Paper Heart’ about those very special feelings that parenthood brings.‘Gone For Good Goodbye’ is a sad number about the aches and pain of seeing someone go.Throughout the album, Kershaw offers very commanding performances that comes from the soul. The collection offers a good mix of the old and new, the uplifting and the ballads, the joyful and the sad.The results are great, and I don’t think that anyone will want their money back.Even if his career slowed down for a while, I Want My Money Back just might take him right back at the top.Country Connection Jessie Aulis ¦c
