1ER PENSE A TOI —_____________IS THINKING OF YOU «¦H Turn your groceries.into rewards \.„s W&R Foryour 4 I reward miles f choose 1ER all the way Quality is our main ingredient.472 Knowlton Rd., Knowlton 243-6692 Open Oaify 8-10 p.m.The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome—Missisquoi Brome County NEW Wednesday, June 11, 2003 Entrepreneur brings spring to Pike River Maison du Printemps to go with the flow By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent St-Pierre-de-Veronne-de-Pike" River Quebec highway 133 is one of the busiest in Quebec, a corridor for commercial traffic between New ' England and Montreal.At the small village of St-Pierre-de-Veronne-de-Pike River, the east-west flowing route 202 merges briefly with highway before turning east toward Cowansville.Despite the heavy flow of traffic, retail operations are relatively few along the stretch between the border and St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.Still, Bedford native Pam Davidson McLernon is taking a chance that the volume of traffic will pay off with a new shop, Maison du Printemps, which opened two weeks ago in St-Pierre-de-Veronne-de-Pike River, still known to many by its tradi- tional name, Pike River.Although new to local residents, Maison du Printemps is actually a registered business founded by McLernon in 1980.The original business offered landscaping and interior design using silk trees, foliage and flowers to a Montreal clientele of private individuals, corporate clients, building owners and developers.In 1989, she opened a retail operation, carrying an inventory of silk trees, flowers, basketware, ceramic cache-pots and other decorative items.In addition to her role as entrepreneur, she is also a founder and honorary chairman of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, which raises $2 million annually for breast cancer research and a National Board member of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.She is also a volunteer on the Trans-Canada Trail Foundation and serves as vice-president for the Quebec Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.See Printemps, Page 12 Library gifted with a century of donations By Philip A.Godin Record Correspondent Knowlton Should anyone require further evidence of Brome Lake residents’ ingrained sense of community, a tour of the recently landscaped grounds of the Pettes Memorial Library in Knowlton should suffice.Accustomed to ensuring its daily operations by way of the financial contributions it solicits from its many supporters, Quebec’s oldest free public rural library was the recent beneficiary of a few noteworthy donations.What distinguishes these sources of funding from the others was that they were neither directly solicited nor received without specific provisos as to how they were to be spent, namely on capital projects that could best enhance the Library’s position within the community.As caretakers of the venerable institution, the board of trustees were faced with the challenge of managing these particular donations in a way that would both benefit the Library’s infrastructure, while commemorating the spirit of selflessness that sparked the generosity itself.See Pettes, Page 3 liim DECORATION ¦r%.— 'ssJi •'*>•* *
