Outside the Box Kelly McDevitt Draw your DAD Machine Cinema Web television is a hybrid medium by definition; it brings the familiar formula of television we all know and reformats it for the attention deficits of an Internet audience. As a hybrid, it’s also prone to absorbing other forms of entertainment, from music to blogs to videogames. In fact, Internet television seems to have a love affair of sorts with the latter; many successful series include gamer culture references and deal with the lives of gaming devotees (The Guild, Pure Pwnage). This love affair has also spawned a unique genre of web television: machinima.Machinima (ma-sheen-im-uh), a term that combines the words machine and cinema, is a series or short film produced using an existing videogame.Instead of creating new animations from scratch like they do in films like Monsters Inc.and Toy Story (which take years to complete and a massive budget) machinima “captures” the animation generated through real-time gameplay of games like Halo and World of War-craft.Think of it like recording an episode of your favorite show on a VCR or DVR, only instead you’re recording a videogame with computer software. What I find the most impressive about machinima is the forethought and planning that goes into it.Unlike taping a show on your VCR, with machinima you are controlling the movements of the characters, the camera angles and setting as you record live. This requires extensive storyboarding, an intimate knowledge of the game’s limits and capabilities, and HOURS of repetition and editing.Of course, there are _________¦ advantages. It’s à helluva lot cheaper and faster to record game- - play than to design, animate and program - an original CG (computer generated) series.Films like Shrek take about four years to complete, whereas machinima can crank out an episode per week if it needs to.Machinima got its start in the 1990s, with Diary of a Camper (1996) made with Quake being the genre’s first film.Over the last 15 years or so the genre has flourished and there are several high-quality machinima series and films out there made with games as diverse as Neverwinter Nights, Sims 2 and Quake. It’s been a popular genre for television; the machinima series Time Commander (Rome; Total War) aired on BBC 2 for two seasons and South Park aired a machinima episode entitled “Make Love, Not Warcraft” (World of Warcraft).Perhaps the best machinima series out there is Red vs Blue: The Blood Gulch Chronicles by Rooster Teeth productions.RvsB, made with the Halo series of games, is now in its eighth season.Warring armies the Blue Team and the Red Team square off in a remote canyon trying to overcome the greatest obstacle of all - their own incompetence - to defeat each other. It has a bizarre, twisting plot riddled with time travel, artificial intelligence and alien technology. It also boasts some of the best dialogue I’ve ever encountered in any media; I’ve literally rolled on the floor laughing at this show, tears streaming, sides splitting and all.To watch the full series visit www.roosterteeth.com and click on Red vs.Blue.Father’s Name: Child’s Name: Age: Send in a drawing of your Dad and we will publish it in The Record on Thursday, June 17 in time for Father’s Day.1195 Galt St.East, Sherbrooke, QCJ1G 1Y7 or email: classad@sherbookerecord.com Deadline: Monday, June 14, 2010 Send in your father’s name, your name and age.Your donation could make all tke difference! Coates first wrote a 40-page time travel tale in 2006, to mark Monroe’s 80th birthday, then ended up adding three more stories.By 2008, he’d merged them into a single novel.“I had a time travel story in the back of my head,” and he ended up connecting that idea with his love of Monroe.“Marilyn had no concept of time whatsoever, She was always late, she didn’t care about time at all.She didn’t even have a watch. It was perfect to bring them together!” His obsession with Monroe dates back to when he was 16 years old. That’s when his mum bought him a biography of the troubled star of Some Like It Hot, though he’d never heard of her.“I got interested in the pictures, quite frankly. She was a pretty girl.” More than 20 years later, Coates has a collection of Monroe memorabilia, and is a member of five Monroe fan clubs.Monroe-ites will find all kinds of injokes in the books, he promises, and those unfamiliar with her charms will nonetheless recognize the pop-cultural markers of a well-publicized life. But they’ll also discover a real person behind the hype.“I wanted to build the character.Marilyn grows, she was very jaded with acting, and 1 think she would have quit Hollywood” had she lived past 1962.Finished manuscript in hand (or rather, on disc), Coates discovered iUniverse on line, a print-on-demand publisher, and paid up-front for design and other work: “I wanted people who were very good at producing books. And 1 didn’t want books to come here; I’m not a bookstore.” He says he has since received his first royalty cheque, but won’t say how much it totaled. He did cash it, he says - he’s not sentimental enough to put it up on the wall instead.Certainly “it’s not going to be a best-seller,” although he is purposefully targeting the bigger American market with his US settings and characters.During this time, Coates survived two waves of layoffs at his Ottawa company, but not the third. He moved back home to the Townships about a year ago, and got to work seriously on the sequel. He writes about 2,000 words a day and hopes to make a go of writing fulltime.“I think I’m a fairly decent writer, but what I don’t have is the network to dis- tribute it.I want to get my name out there.” He worries his anglo name in smalltown Quebec will make it hard to break through here, much less in the US (“I’m a Canadian writer shouting at an American audience”).The great Mark Twain, Coates says, went bankrupt twice. And Coates is no Mark Twain, he quickly adds.“I’m just a little guy with a lot of imagination and big heart.” Coates’ imagination next brought him Marilyn's Mindset, published last month. It’s about Monroe’s daughter, and features more time travel and paradoxes than you can shake a tachyon stream at.He says sci-fi writing requires smarts.“I think science fiction in general is probably the most creative [of the genres], I enjoy something that forces me to think.” But he’s also meticulously researched Monroe and the historical periods his characters visit."Our past defines our future,” he says.Coates is going to keep playing with sci-fi for a third book he's just started thinking through, a ghost story that also spans time. He’s got to move on from Marilyn, he says, especially since the second novel was so hard to write (“I’m still in recovery”).But in truth, that may be for reasons that don’t directly connect to Monroe.Marilyn’s Mindset is much more about relationships, and Coates has, he says, integrated some traits of his girlfriend of many years into the more mature Monroe’s character.“My girlfriend had cancer, and recovered. The first story I wrote to honour Marilyn. The second one was to honour my girlfriend.” Stuart Coates can be found online at www.marilynscin.com and the book can be ordered through the website.Angels and Music Boxes Judy Derick From the beautiful hills of St.Armand to the hamlet of Stanbridge East, creativity flourishes in our townships.Michael Laduke has lived in Stanbridge East all of his 56 years. His family is native to Stanbridge East and has been settled there for seven generations. As a boy, he worked for his carpenter grandfather, Alton Laduke, building the town’s first sidewalks.Michael then worked in construction for many years with his father Clifton, who was also a well-known carpenter.Clifton made beautiful wooden furniture, mostly out of cherry wood, screen doors that can be seen throughout the townships, adiron-dack chairs and so much more.He loved working with his hands, and spent hours in his shop turning spindles.Inside the house was Michael’s mother Beverley, who was also very creative, enjoying painting, knitting, crocheting, quilting and sewing.Michael inherently values the beauty of making things by hand.As a young man in his twenties, he remembers visiting friends and admiring the gift of a stained glass fisherman they had received. His curi-ousity perked, and while in Toronto Michael found a stained glass book with an address in the back, where he sent away for a beginner’s stained glass making kit.Michael’s work with stained glass has been a trial and error process, with some guidance in the beginning, from his friends at the Studio de Verre in Old Montreal, where he gets most of his material. It is an amazing shop, impossible to go in and buy one piece of glass! Did you know that glass is made out of sand?Coloured glass comes from the U.S.A., England and Germany. It is a paradox, but the thicker, more difficult glass to work with is also the more expensive to buy.A sheet of glass may have blends of colours, with a variety of tex- tures.Red glass and the pink family are more expensive because gold dust is added to the molten glass to intensify the colour. The assortment, colours, tex- tures, and patterns are endless.Michael’s reputation has spread and CONTD ON PAGE 8 PRING MUSICAL # *T3 ¦! * CHOP'S DRflNA AIE MUSIC DtPARTFIfflTS PRtSEfTT IN 3 RnHPTin from Shhkespehbe s ”12" Night" ST LIVE MUSIC FROM FHE 50S RNI) 6QSt m 11-19 06 El Adults $18 • Seniors $15 • Students $10 TUHM9IUOIO TUMI».BISHOPS IIUEMW TMS=819-622-9692 Page 4 June if-June 17, 2010 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com TALK By Eleanor Brown Special to The Record After multiple children’s book publishers politely but firmly said no, JoJo Rideout published a teeny, tiny perfect book of poetry about Moose the Cat on her own, as gifts for friends. In it, the cat.came back.A friend painted scenes for selected lines, and a full-fledged work of art was born. The pair sent it around to publishers a few years ago, gauging interest.“But they like to have a story, and then connect it to their own illustrator,” says Rideout.“They’re not interested in a package deal, so we stuck it in a drawer.” It stayed there for some four years, but is now on sale at the Bishop’s University Bookstore, a fundraising project for the campus cat association which rescues (and fixes) local strays.Rideout, a Bishop’s University Drama professor, actor and costumer, wrote the poem some 40 years ago, when she was 20.At the time she sent copies to her little nieces and put it to music. But for Christmas 2009, wanting her friend’s artwork to be seen and admired, she popped down to the campus print shop and had 50 copies done up, for $200.“It’s an expensive venture when you do it yourself.” But of course, those who received them as gifts that year were worth it.Then she connected with the cat association, and both Rideout and illustrator Christine Wallace assigned the rights to the group.Another 200 have been printed, in a nice thick paper, full-colour, making a perfect square, each side 3 and inches. The book is $5.“The reason it’s small is because we wanted it to be in little baby chubby hands.” “Kids can memorize it really easily,” adds Rideout, and can even anticipate the simple rhymes (“Moose the Cat was very fat”).It’s not an intellectual stretch, laughs Rideout. But the artist, Torontonian Wallace, brings more to the simple story - something for adults, as well.“When I started looking at her drawings, they made me think of runaways.Of street kids, of how they could come back home." Rideout had been kidding around with her friend when she suddenly suggested the illustration project, and Wallace agreed.Wallace’s paintings took months, and they’re complete artworks. She had them reduced many times in size to fit the book. The words are all written out by hand (as art!), and the books are hand-stapled.“This was really a fun thing between friends,” says Rideout. And Moose the Cat, by the way, really did come back.He lived to the ripe old age of 13.OUR COVER The cover of this week’s Talk is a detail from an illustration by Christine Wallace.GLIMPSES OF THE PAST Stevenson the newest publisher in town Eleanor Brown Special to The Record Scott Stevenson is an anglophone Townshipper who lives in both French and English, not with resentment, but with joy.“It’s a subject I really take to heart, the relationship between French and English communities in Quebec,” says Stevenson, who runs a translation business based in Lennoxville and, as the newest book publisher in town, is about to launch his first venture, a grouping of Ross Murray’s humourous columns titled You’re Not Going Eat That, Are You?And while it’s an English-only collec- tion, some of the books planned under the Townships Cantons Publications imprint will be bilingual.“There are prejudices and false assumptions on both sides” of the linguistic divide, says Stevenson, who also pens a column of his own, Covering the Language Bridge, in The Outlet (one of The Record’s sibling newspapers).Written in English, it’s translated and available via e-mail (free for the asking) in French. For anglos, there’s a “false assumption that we’re not welcome, that fran- CONT’D ON PAGE 8 VERITY STEVENSON In 1942, World War II entered a new phase. The increasing need for soldiers showed no signs of slowing down and camps like the one in Collinsville (located on the present site of the Sherwood Hockey plant) became very important for recruiting new forces. Many members of this training camp, including soldiers, officers and the cook, posed for the camera.Want to know more?Visit the bilingual exhibition One Motto, One Regiment : A One-Hundred History of the Fusiliers de Sherbrooke, presented in the Sherbrooke Historical Society’s American Biltrite room.275 Dufferin, Sherbrooke Information : 819-821-5406 info@histoiresherbrooke.com IA SOCIÉTÉ D'HISTOIRE .DF SHERBROOKE www,histoiresherbrooke.com Poutine ’zine Samizdat, noun: “Russian underground press.A system of clandestine printing and distribution of dissident or banned literature." STUDENTS The English-language university and CEGEP in the Townships both publish literary journals.Champlain Regional College Lennoxville has Scratch, focusing on student work.Faculty member Emily Anne Evans says that when founded four years ago, it was more professor-driven but the pen - or perhaps, the computer keyboard - has since been passed on.“This year, the student editors oversaw every aspect of the process, from soliciting submissions to signing off on the proofs. We couldn’t be more impressed with their work,” says Evans.“The first two years saw largely creative writing and art submissions, and outstanding student essays. In 2008-09 and again this year, the magazine became more diversified, the editors rebranding it an ‘Arts and Culture’ magazine, and publishing interviews with Champlain bands and artists, comics, as well as French language texts. The magazine hosts poetry readings, runs creative writing, spoken word, photography and editing workshops.” Copies are available at the BU Book store (Champlain shares its campus with Bishop’s).The Bishop’s University student government has published The Mitre annually for more than 100 years. It features both student and work from the larger community, from short stories to poetry to artwork, and this year’s sold out (likely a first for a literary journal). The editor for 2010-11, Elyse Gagné, sees the publication as a way to bring Townshippers together, and that includes students, from the arts as well as from business.“Literary journals like The Mitre are the easiest way to find Canada’s upcoming literary talent.Chances are if you read something good in the Mitre, that author might very well go on to be published - maybe even famous -and you will be part of the few who saw their talent before they were widely known. With The Mitre, you might even call that author a friend, classmate, or fellow Townshipper, and so you really get to explore the artistic talent of those in your community.” (Readers should know that this reporter has a conflict of interest; as the one-time communications manager for the BU student government, I oversaw the Mitre and produced the 2008 edition - keeping the tradition alive when personnel problems interfered with its scheduled publication.) Says Gagné: “ In Canada, an author’s greatest enemy is obscurity.Too many fantastic artists produce memorable art, but their names get lost along the way.The Mitre is a great way to get up-and-com-ing artists out of the unknown and into the public sphere, one step at a time." ACADEMICS The latest edition of the Journal of Eastern Townships Studies -better known to all as JETS - features a look at medicine, from its history in the Townships to current issues in the area.JETS is published by the Eastern Townships Research Centre, based at Bishop’s University.(Another conflict of interest note: reporter Eleanor Brown has done volunteer work for the ETRC.) - Eleanor Brown Country Connection Jessie Aulis Dierks Bently’s most daring project yet powerful piece of work that offers a really fresh sound. The curly locks singer had already toured to give a preview of the project and fans seemed to appreciate what he was doing. Now he is getting that confirmation loud and clear.Bluegrass is in a way where it all started for the country singer.‘Down In the Mine’ is about the life of a miner, a story which in wake of the recent mining disaster in West Virginia takes a special meaning.A great song on the album is ‘Draw Me a Map’ featuring Alison Krauss. The blend of Bentley’s strong voice to _ Krauss’ smooth one is beautiful and haunting. The song is about lost love, and the imagery of drawing a map to get back to each other is rather original.A complete surprise comes with the cover of ‘Pride (In the Name of Love)’an truly bluegrass version of U2’s hit.I didn’t think that it was possible to make a bluegrass version of anything done by U2, but mostly that it would sound so good.Another favourite on the album is ‘Love Grows Wild.’ This song is a happy number as it pretty much embraces all of the great things about love.It makes you feel good just listening to it.This album also features a list of star musicians such as Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers, the Del McCoury Band, the legendary Sam Bush, dobro player Rob Ickes, guitarist Bryan Sutton, fiddler Stuart Duncan, and mandolinist Ronnie McCoury.I honestly think that there’s no need to be a bluegrass fan to find something that will really appeal to you on Dierks Bentley’s ‘Up on the Ridge.’ 1 am also positive that fans of contemporary country music will love it as well. It’s quite obvious that the artist has been working very hard at recording one of the best albums released in 2010.It is a labour of love. When I heard that Dierks Bentley was recording a bluegrass album, I wasn’t convinced that the idea was so good.I could not figure out how radio with their format would play some bluegrass. However, when the title track ‘Up On the Ridge’ was released as a single, I was pleasantly surprised that first it is playing on radio and then climbing the charts.Beside the album is not necessarily what I thought it would be.This collection is a mix of country and bluegrass and it offers a little something for everyone. The new album features a more contemporary form of bluegrass which on the music scene, the people refer to it as Newgrass.Dierks Bentley’s unique voice makes it a great album.Bentley recorded this album to pay a tribute to his musical roots. But in a way it was very daring for a mainstream star to take the chance in introducing a new style in his work.Dierks Bentley’s ‘Up On The Ridge’ album was released on June 8, just as the title track reaches the Top 25 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.Produced by Jon Randall Stewart, ‘Up On The Ridge’ includes many collaborations.Dozens of talents have contributed in some way to this project.Besides the five songs co-written by Bentley himself, the songs come from such varied sources as Bob Dylan, Buddy and Julie Miller, U2 and Kris Kristofferson.Kristofferson participated on the project as a guest vocalist as well, along with a slate of today’s best traditional country singers, including: Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Sonya Isaacs and Chris Staple-ton of the Steeldrivers. At every turn in his career, Dierks Bentley has done his own thing. Now the singer steps forward with his most artistically daring project yet. This all acoustic album is a Benefit Concert at St-Adolphe de Dudswell Church 191 Principale East, Marbleton Sector Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 8 p.m.unth renoum fiddler ColtuM VqUaglUi www.calvinvollrath.com Information; André Proulx: 819-887-6742 Réal Rodrique: 819-887-6392 Pre-sale: At the door: Adult: $20 Adult: $25 Student: $10 student: $15 Page 6 June 11 - big, chunky pieces, or layered chains with gold and silver. It’s always safe to do a smoky eye with red lips.Or, you can keep the look fresh and light if you’re wearing spring colours.Canadians are known for “not putting quite enough time into their hairdo,” Angus says.“I recommend you book the appointment at the hairdresser.” Angus particularly likes the look of a sleek ponytail.“I think it’s a little underrated for the evening look,” she says.In general, with hair, the principle is to keep it light: “An up-do will always work for a big event, just don’t make it too tight, too perfect.Don’t spray it to the point of helmet.” ’• < • ’ SuperColumnist publishes midlife crisis Ross Murray By Eleanor Brown Special to The Record Think of geeky, bespectacled Ross Murray as just waiting for a chance to show off his superpowers.Or at least his undershirt.“I have a secret identity. They all think I'm writing press releases, raising funds, or working on the website. But then I go into a phone-booth, rip open my shirt, and it’s SuperColumnist under there!” Every week since 2004, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night has kept Murray from filing his humourous Record column. And now his first book, You’re Not Going to Eat That, Are You?- a collection of some of his best writings -will be launched in Stanstead and Lennoxville. Why a book?“Ego, vanity.the usual reasons.I’m very happy about this, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while.” You can see that it’s Murray’s mix of silliness and earnestness that is so endearing to his fans (or to this one, at least). And yes, he says, it’s darned hard to be funny. And darned hard to remember fiinny when an idea hits you in the shower, with no pen and paper at hand.“I don’t know, my mind just goes off in tangents.Sometimes it just leaves the room completely.Sometimes I think ‘this is kinda boring, I should push it in a silly direction.’” Many ideas come in that odd place, between wakefulness and sleeping.A lot of the work focuses on his four kids. They’ve learned to be patient with him.“When they were young enough they had no choice,” he says.“It was easier to exploit them.” But once each child hits the age of 10 or so, they start, unfortunately, to read and to care (and Murray and his spouse don’t appear to have a new one on the way that he could use for another decade). Now he asks his children’s permission, and they often give it to him (though they have never told him they have enjoyed one of his columns).Murray moved to the Townships in 1992, working at the weekly Stanstead Journal where “there were big gaps in pages that had to be filled.” So he started scribbling about himself.“It was the type of writing that gave me a lot of pleasure.” Eventually he bought the Journal, sold it, and ended up at Stanstead College working in communications. But he wanted to keep writing. The Record got him, and has been running him on Thursdays ever since.Murray calls the book his midlife crisis (it’s cheaper than a sports car, he says - he’s the proud owner of a rusty 2003 family van).Established publishers liked the manuscript, but told him it wouldn’t sell -which is when he reconnected with old friend and Townshipper Scott Stevenson, whose new company is the publisher of You’re Not Going To Eat That, Are You?The Stanstead launch is June 16 at the Colby Curtis Museum from 7 to 9 pm.The Lennoxville celebration is June 19 from 2 to 5 pm, at Uplands (9 Speid). And you can also catch Murray weekly on CBC Radio 1.The comedic spot runs on Breakaway on Tuesdays, somewhere between 4:45 and 5 pm.This week’s was recorded in isolation in his basement’s cold room (it is hard to ask four children to be completely silent for 10 minutes, Murray says).Any last words, Mr.SuperColumnist, sir?“My soul is okay.Get lots of sleep.Stay in school.” TALK [ newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com June 11 - June 17, 2010 Page 7 Canuck crime writers lead the way Suspended Sentences Jim Napier It’s that time of year again, meaning the annual crime writing awards are being given out for the best of the best, and it’s been a stellar year for Canadians.First Torontonian Marc Strange turned American heads by receiving an Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original from the Mystery Writers of America for his novel Body Blows. Then fellow Toronto author Howard Shrier, last year’s winner of the Arthur Ellis Award for Best first Novel, returned to pick up this year’s Best Novel Award for High Chicago.Earlier in the year Alan Bradley, formerly of Kelowna, B.C.(he now makes his home in Malta), blew readers off the map with his debut novel The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, which picked up a Debut Dagger Award from Britain’s Crime Writers’ Association; and at last month’s Arthur Ellis Awards he matched the deed, picking up an Ellis for Best First Novel.Did I mention that Township-per Louise Penny has garnered an unprecedented third-in-a-row Agatha Award for A Brutal Telling, given out by the folks at Malice Domestic, for Best Novel of the Year? It’s like the Olympics all over again.Hard, then, to pick a Canadian crime novel to focus on, especially when most of the winners have already been reviewed in these pages. But hey, who said life is easy?So herewith, a brief selection of tales that span the country from the Maritimes to Vancouver. All fine works among the year’s best, that I haven’t reviewed until now, for your reading enjoyment.C.B.Forrest, Hie Weight of Stones (Rendezvous Crime, 2009) Toronto, 1999.As the city inches toward the new millennium Metro Police Detective Charlie McKelvey is seeing a therapist and wrestling with grief and guilt: in a burst of tough love he ejected his son Gavin from their house, and before long the boy was murdered. To make matters worse, McKelvey is convinced he knows who killed his son: a Quebec biker and ex-con sent to Toronto to form a chapter for a biker gang from South America. He has no evidence, though, and without it his superiors are not prepared to take the case forward. There is no light at the end of the tunnel for McKelvey, and when his wife leaves him and then an unexpected illness forces him to retire, the troubled ex-cop must make life-defining choices utterly alone.Exploring McKelvey’s grief and desire for revenge. The Weight of Stones is a brooding tale that forces readers to examine their own values. The result is an introspective, reflective and literate work that will resonate with thoughtful readers.Shortlisted for this year’s Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel, the sequel, Slow Recoil, is due out later this year.Marc Strange, Body Blows (Dundurn 2009) Ex-boxer Joe Grundy is personal bodyguard and head of security for seventy-four-year old-millionare Leo Alexander, who has just extensively renovated Vancouver’s Lord Douglas Hotel.Grundy is unswervingly loyal to his boss, even to the extent of nearly dying by taking multiple bullets meant for the man in an attempted hit.Leo lives in a luxurious penthouse suite on the top floor of the hotel, and one evening Leo and Grundy return from a party to find that someone has murdered Raquel Mendez, Leo’s live-in housekeeper and lover. When Grundy notices a blood smear on the top-floor security keypad and hears someone in the stairwell, he gives chase.Emerging from the hotel he is nearly run over by someone on a dirt bike coming out of the construction site next door. He’s gotten away, but the site isn’t devoid of interest: someone has fallen -or been pushed - from the penthouse terrace, twenty floors above, impaled on some construction rebar. He won’t be doing any talking.Leo wants his revenge for his lover's death, and he’s not about to wait for the cops to solve the case.It falls to Grundy to find the killer. He begins by digging into Leo’s flamboyant past, one that includes a parade of ex-lovers, questionable business deals, and estranged children. But when the police arrest Leo, Grundy knows he really has his work cut out for him.Fast-paced and hard-hitting.Body Blows is classic hard-boiled, with colour- CONTD ON PAGE 9 Lennoxville Sketchbook a connection to home Good Reads ¦ Eleanor Brown Kay Kinsman’s Lennoxville Sketchbook is Friendship Day on paper, a living reminder of the late artist’s connection and commitment to her home. The bilingual book, published in 1990, is also known by the title Lennoxville: Sur le vif.Kinsman's gentle humour, comments and history are a joy to read. There are notes about Prince Philip, sketches of homes that have not changed a bit, and drawings of places that did not survive the 30-year span between publication and the year 2010 - such as the monastery of the Clarissas - the one on Queen Street, long burned down and replaced by a beautiful new building. There is one caveat, however: There is not a single portrait here of Elvis Presley. The King holds a privileged place in Quebec society.Percentage-wise, more Quebeckers believe Elvis is still alive than in any other place in the world. And the King had record sales here.Ronald Sutherland understands. His 2003 novel, How Elvis Saved Quebec, is set just before the (first) Quebec referendum, in North Hatley er, I mean.North Chadley, a small hamlet on the shores of Lake Missawappi (that’s not a typo!).The townspeople are evenly divided between French and English. The narrator is a slightly mystified American anthropology student, here to study the natives (including an Indian with an agenda of his own).Sutherland is a humourist, and pokes fun at all sides - and hopefully, we’re all far enough away from that first complicated battle to accept the ribbing. As Sutherland notes, however, it’s not politics that saves Quebec after all, but Elvis.Indeed, our relations as neighbors and friends are the very foundation of Friendship Day, to be celebrated in Lennoxville on Saturday (Good Reads is even hoping for an Elvis impersonator during Friendship Idol!).But let’s talk language, briefly.Did you know that 8,687 French words are also English words?Yes, unilingual ang-los already have a solid knowledge of French, they just don’t know it! Arthur Prevosts’s Dictionnaire FrAnglais Dictionary literally lists the English and French versions of such words.Sometimes there’s a single vowel change, and of course the word is pronounced differently en français.Take police, for example, or pork/porc.An odd little tome for language lovers.Voices on the Border (1986) brings together creative writers from the south of the Townships and the north of Vermont, all writing in English. There’s a mix of poetry and short fiction here, the result of many, many Monday night meetings of the Border Writers’ Group.Townshippers have a real sense of place.Poet Ralph Gustafson, a North Hatley resident until his death in 1995, wrote about place, both in the Townships and beyond. There’s at times a charming naiveté in Landscape With Rain (1980).“Still Life" tells of Bell-Canada gutting a tree in favour of a telephone pole: Gustafson himself was the whistleblower, but had meant for the pole to be moved.Remember poetry should be read aloud, with the sounds savored. That’s really what poetry’s about - the words take up and make up that sense of place.FRIENDSHIP DAY There will be a book sale on Saturday, June 12 from 9 am to 3 pm.Come support your local library: please be a friend of the environment an bring your own bags.BOOK ENDS FOR CHILDREN Preschool Story Time, for ages 0 to 5, is every second Tuesday. The next story time is Tuesday, June 15, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.SUMMER READING PROGRAM The Jungle is this year’s theme for the summer reading program.Preschooler to preteens, everyone is welcome.Come enjoy the books and activities. The summer reading program will run every Wednesday from July 7 through Aug.11, from 1:30 to 3 pm.Just give us a call or come into the library to sign up.BOOK ENDS FOR ADULTS Books and Brown Bags is on summer break.Come the fall, come and discuss a book you’ve read and enjoyed while having your lunch. For information on all Lennoxville Library events, call us at 819-562-4949 or visit us at our website www.bibliolennoxvillelibrary.ca or bib-liolen@gmail.com.Sherbrooke's English Language Bookstore Bishop's University Bookstore 2600 College St., Sherbrooke, Q.C.Phone: 819-822-9600, ext.2241 "Selected Best Sellers.www.bishops.bkstr.com 30% OFF BEST SELLERS EVERY DAY Page 8 June 11 - June 17, 2010 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com | TALK Angels and Music Boxes CONTD FROM PAGE 3 Newest pubisher in town for years the owner of The Studio de Verre has encouraged him to work with them on large contracts in Montreal.Perfecting the technique has required endless patience. The first stage, after choosing a pattern or creating one’s own, involves making a pattern out of cardboard and cutting out each piece, with precision. Then, choosing the glass. There are “rules” such as not mixing opaque with translucent.having the lines of each piece run the same direction (whereby using more glass but following the aesthetic beauty of the material) and more. One then traces each pattern piece onto the glass and then the cutting (scoring) begins.A carbu-rumdum tipped cutter is used, remembering never to cut over the same line more than once! The glass is then broken along the score lines, easily with straight lines, not so easily with inward curves.Glass tends to want to crack in a straight line, much to a novice’s dismay! Each piece must then be put to the grinder, cleaned, wrapped in self-adhesive copper foil tape (a technique begun by Louis Tiffany), soldered together, cleaned again and then polished.Oh what a shame when a piece is dropped! Michael began by making gifts for family and friends. Now he works on contracts, builds inventory and participates in the Tournée des 20 each fall.He is one of the original participants, welcoming clients into his shop, and inviting them to try their hand at cutting a piece of glass.Michael also works with leaded glass; has created church windows and restored others. His work has been shipped to many countries; from a polar bear window in South Africa, to angels and music boxes in the Arctic, maple leaves in Switzerland, other pieces in Germany, England, France and Peru.Samples of Michael’s work can also be found at Mr.Baker’s bakery, Baker-Dion-Meu-nier Funeral Home, Dépanneur Stanbridge East, Bedford United Church and Stanbridge East United Church to name but a few.Customers come to order lamps, which may contain from 20 to as many as 2000 pieces. The simple el- egance of stained glass lends itself to unlimited possibilities. Also popular are windows, mirrors, and sun-catchers.Michael is able to work with a customer, helping them choose the perfect design, sometimes going to their home and offering suggestions for colour combinations and such. Some clients even come in with a memorable photograph which Michael transforms into a work of art! Courses are also available.Students have often been heard to say how much they loveto work in the studio with Michael, learning from his patience and precision. It’s fun to learn an art, sitting with an artist, on a winter afternoon or evening.Currently, Michael is working on the Carrefour Cultural Committee in Stanbridge East to try and bring a “Marché de Noel” event to the town; a traditional old- fashioned market with local hand-made goods.Michael’s process continues as he explores the boundaries of the glass, and his imagination. He strives to create new, original designs, using his knowlege and experience to create sparkling wonders.Although there are no conventional hours as Michael delivers the rural mail in the mornings, there is a very informal, inviting atmosphere, and if he is home, the shop is open.He is often in his shop in the evenings. He asks that people call ahead. He is situated at 2 Riceburg Road, Stanbridge East, Quebec.450-248-3871.Small communities yield great things and RCM is an offshoot of a spirit alive and well in Brome Mis-sisquoi reflecting who we are.Give us a listen, send us your comments and suggestions, we always want to hear from you all and play the stuff you want to hear. For those of you who can’t pick us up on the radio, go to our website (rcmmedia.org) and click on the live-streaming button. If you missed a show you can listen to it on the CIDI player or go to the show/host pages and listen to past programs.Radio Communautaire Mis-sisquoi.Tel: 450-242-9873 / 1-888-539-2098, email: info@rcmmedia.org.CONTD FROM PAGE 4 cophones think we’re a threat.” As for the French-speaking Québécois, there’s a fear that the English don’t and won’t speak French, and that they “don’t have the sensitivity to the language concerns of the French-speaking community.” Stevenson’s family background clearly helped him bridge the divide. His grandmother was a French-Canadian from East Angus, who fell in love with a Cookshire Stevenson; such marriages were controversial at the time.Stevenson, who grew up in English, is married to a francophone from Abitibi! “I went to English schools, and I sent my daughter to French elementary and high schools. My son started at French elementary, but there’s so much French at home that I’ve switched him to the English [system].” The Townships are special, he says, with a mixing and understanding of franco and anglo cultures that is rarely found elsewhere. And Stevenson pushes his ideas whatever he does. His website, http://townships.ca, features a different quote every day (some in French, some in English, all connected to the area), as well as a photograph (Wednesday’s was of a lunch counter in East Hereford). But no, a guy stuck on bringing together the two solitudes isn’t obsessed with writing about it.Rather, he often wants the stuff of every-day life to be seen by both anglos and francos.Take “Blended families” or “La famille recomposée dans toutes ses couleurs,” updated regularly on the site and written by turn by various parents and grandparents. The book is scheduled for fall 2011.“I want people to make Townships .ca their homepage,” he says, so they can discover a new local author and portrait daily, regardless of language.Stevenson is a former journalist (he worked at the Record for a while, as did his mother Barbara Verity), and a former executive director of Townshippers’ Association. While TA is largely reliant on federal government funding for many of its programs, Stevenson says it’s much more: “A big part of its ethic is grassroots and community-driven, the independent, self-made approach.” Future books in the works include a look at explorer David Thompson, whose unpublished diaries of a Townships survey were discovered by Verity and Gilles Pelo-quin.Hands is an upcoming book of photographs and poems by Stevenson, who is also in Taproot 4, the literary journal sponsored by Townshippers’.“I’m not taking a conventional business approach,” says Stevenson, who hopes to publish two or three tomes a year.“I’m going at it out of personal interest, but that doesn’t pay the bills.I’ve got to earn an income.” Some 750 copies of Ross Murray’s book will be printed, and printing alone comes in at about $2,000.But Stevenson is quite optimistic about his company, believing the Internet may well turn his books into solid sellers.Search engines and social media connections allow people to find and recommend the exact niche products they’re looking for: “There are new economic opportunities from the social changes happening due to information technology,” and Stevenson believes that having instant access to the big wide world will actually bring Eastern Townshippers closer together. As a journalist and businessman, Stevenson has pushed politicians to ensure that the Internet is available throughout the region; it’s an economic imperative, and essential for community growth: “We want to continue living where we want to live, and be able to access markets.” I'M LEARNING FRENCH Because.more friends means more funi Cpp,— Join CPF • tor answers and support as they discover French.WWW.Cpf.C3 cine entertainment Galaxy Sherbrooke Sherbrooke 4204, bout, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 819-821-9999 GALAXY SH0WTIM6S EFFECTIVE JUNE 11TH TO JUNE I7TH ROBIN DES BOIS (G + Not recommended for young children) Every day: 12:20, 15:20, 18:45, 21 .-40______ SHREK FOREVER AFTER 3D £G) Every day: 12:25, 14:40, 16:55, 19 15, 21:35 SHREK 4, IL ÉTAIT UNE FIN (G) Every day: 113:10, 15:35 SEXE À NEW YORK 2 CG + Not recommended for young children) Every day except Sat: 18:30, 21:30 Sat: IS:30 PRINCE OF PERSIA: LES SABLES DU TEMPS CG * Not recommended for young children) Every day: 12:45, 15:45, 1900,21:45 TUER POUR AIMER CG + Not recommended for young children) Every day: 13:05, 15:35, 18:55, 21:25 MARMADUKE CFV) CG) Every day: 12:15, 14:30, 16:45, 18:55, 21:20 SPLICE: NOUVELLE ESPECE Cl 3+) G very day: 13:05, 15:40, 19:10,21:45 L’ENFANT PRODIGE CG) Every day except Wed: 13:10, 15:45, 19:05, 21:30 Wed: 15:45, 21:30 PRINCE OF PERSIA: SAND OF TIME CG + Not recommended for young children) Every day: 12:55, 15:55, 19:10,21:50 KARATE KID (FV) CG) Every day except Wed: 12:30, 15:40, 18:40, 21=40 Wed: 18:40, 21:40 L'AGENCE TOUS RISQUES CG + Not recommended for young children) Every day: 12:55, 15:20, 19,05, 21:35 shrek 4, il Etait une FIN 3D CG) Every day: 12:15, 14:30, 16:45, 19:00,21:25 ‘SIHB&STBOUfRrCWaiA: WU.Jure l«i IPO fun.VBWWrWOWïr «I NOWWEKlXFVr UFC H5UXBi«fWM«UN set, jin latiaaoo who TICKETS AVAILABLE AT ClNE.PLEX.COV DIGITAL SOUND TALK TV Listings Canucks lead the way Cont’d from Page 7 ful characters, snappy dialogue and a cynical point of view.If you like Hemingway, you’ll like Marc Strange.Anne Emery.Cecelian Vespers ECW Press, 2009 Former Arthur Ellis Award winner Anne Emery has penned another Halifax-based mystery featuring criminal lawyer Montague Collins. In Cecilian Vespers Collins comes to the aid of an old friend.Catholic Father Brennan Burke is trying to realize his long-held dream of an academy of church music, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing the great musical works of the Church’s past to a new generation of churchgoers.Father Burke is delighted when he manages to attract a collection of students from all over the world.Like many Catholics, he's not a fan of the innovative ecclesiastical music that dominated the Church following Vatican II; he wants to reintroduce traditional forms of celebration. But some of the students aren't happy with what they see as his old-fashioned and elitist ideas. The schism threatens to boil over into open rebellion. When a renowned theologian in the group is killed in a Halifax church, the police look to the group to find the murderer. But is it conceivable that someone would kill over a theological dispute? The priest and the lawyer labour to reach their own conclusions, and their efforts will take them abroad, to the heart of the Church in Rome itself.Well-researched and original, Cecelian Vespers will appeal to fans of ecclesiastical mysteries who can get past (or are intrigued by) the details of church history and theology.Fear not; as befits a church mystery there are wheels within wheels, and plot twists aplenty.NOTE: In response to numerous requests, recently I put up a crime fiction website featuring my reviews and interviews, tributes, a list of independent mystery bookstores, and other resources for both readers and writers. You can find it at http://deadlydiversions.com Use the Contact Me button to let me know what you think!
