By Maurice Crossfield Knowlton Corning off of a successful First year, the Parish of Brome will hold a sugaring off party at Bob Derby’s farm at the end of the month.“Last year we had a wonderful day, it was sunny and 50 degrees,” says Doug Hall, one of the organizers of the event.“Mother Nature is the one potential flaw in all of this.” "It’s an ecumenical event, it’s not just for Anglicans,” he says.“And this isn’t a sterile sugar camp where everything’s paved.I’d suggest people wear rubber boots and something that is mud-friendly.” Boosting Knowlton’s downtown Born on the South Shore and now living in Bromont, Boucher has always loved decorating, developing her eye in jewellery merchandising and at an art gallery.“My parents had a construction company and sold decorated houses, I learned to love interior design, and I use that love in the store. The bedding is displayed on beds, the table clothes on tables with place settings, aprons, tea towels, to give people ideas, hints on how to put things together.” Clementine opened in May 2004 at 91 Lakeside, previously the LL Brome Store.“It’s a wonderful location in this converted barn with the big beams, and wood everywhere, it was just the atmosphere I wanted, the feeling and look of country. When I First visited Knowlton I fell in love with the New England ambiance and that’s what I wanted to carry though to the merchandising.” Last year when space became available across the parking lot from the Clementine, Boucher decided to expand.“The new location is very feminine for accessories and beauty products. It has a different feel, a different look from the original store, but under the same name,” she says.“I have lines from England, France and Canada, beautiful soaps, hand creams, perfumes.I’ve coordinated handbags, sunglasses, jewellery, hats, belts, all sorts of things to accessorize, all very feminine and pretty. We also carry some items from Knowlton clothing designer Jodie Mallinson.” Boucher agrees with other merchants that Knowlton is in a slow period. Please see Business on Page 4 A success story By Wendy Denman Brome County News correspondent ¦ « -yhen Debbie Boucher % /opened Clementine à la \I \l campagne in Knowlton it T T was her first experience as a merchant. Now almost four years later she’s as enthusiastic about both the store and the town as she was on opening day.So enthusiastic that last November she opened a second shop close by to complement the First.“I love everything to do with merchandising.Clementine is all about materials, fabrics. We carry bedding, cushions, duvets, table clothes, curtains, lace runners, valances, and every kind of Finished fabric for the home in a great variety of patterns and florals. And because I carry bedding, I carry nightwear and loungewear to complement, items from April Cornell and Nautica that mix well together,” Boucher says.“I believe it’s very important to offer customers a great variety and at affordable prices.I change things around all the time, so the store looks different every time a customer comes in, so it never appears the same.” A sure sign of spring Sugaring off Sunday, March 30 will begin with a special service at the Anglican Church in Brome. Then things get underway at noon at Bob and Pat Derby’s Carousel Farms, at 72 Valley Road. For $5 an adult or $3 for kids or $20 for a family, there’ll be coffee or hot chocolate, doughnuts, tons of sugar on snow, sleigh and pony rides, games for the kids and music by local artist Sarah Biggs.“It's a good family day with something for all ages,” Hall says. The lion’s share of the money raised will go to help maintain the churches of the Parish of Brome, which includes the Anglican churches of West Brome, Brome, Iron Hill and Sutton Junction. For more information call Doug Hall at 450-263-2579, Bob Derby at 450-243-1999 or Valerie Cook at 450- 243-5147.\/ \ Y Johnny's Soleil Rouge PÏerreMarziaïiY Contractor Pharmacist Machinery work Hydraulic hammer (rock breaker) Private roads • l and shaping • Drainage Artificial lakes,/ponds • Septic systems Demolition -
