NEW Tuesday, November 20, 2012 See Elegant Living Edition - page 7 Fire at Odd Fellows hall shocks community By Frank Nixon Knowlton building hosted numerous events over the years The Odd Fellows hall on 476 Knowlton Rd.in Knowlton was destroyed in a devastating fire in the early morning hours on Sunday, November 18.“We received a call at 5 a.m.,” said Brome Lake Fire Chief Pierre Laplante.Laplante added that the fire appeared to have started in the front of the building and migrated up the wall to the roof and spread quickly throughout the building. No one was in the building at the time.Firefighters from Sutton and Waterloo also arrived to put out the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.Over the years the building has served as an important gathering place for numerous community and social events. The hall was a regular meeting place for the Odd Fellows, the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star.It has hosted wedding and funeral receptions.Bingo games, Canada Day breakfasts, annual garage sales organized by the Knowlton Lions Club, antique sales, private parties, dances, musical events, fundraiser suppers, etc.Just last month, on October 20, some 300 people attended a successful fundraiser for the Brome Lake Fire Department and First Responders.Built in the early 1950s, the building was once a bowling alley, a German dance and beer hall called “Seppes” and then the “Lone Star Saloon.” It was purchased by the Odd Fellows in 1983.“It is a great loss for the community,” said Bernard Gravel, a Knowlton resident and member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.“I am shocked by the news,” said another resident, adding, “there was supposed to be a Bingo game tonight.” Odd Fellows have become known in many areas as the “Three-Link Fraternity" which is evidenced by their “Three-Link emblem,” which stands for “friendship, love and truth.” tos FRANK NIXON The Odd Fellows hall lay in ruins Sunday morning. Please see page 12 for more Wayside burial site By Frank Nixon On Saturday, November 17, John Fowles and some 15 volunteers took one step closer in preserving the Last Wayside burial site for future generations with the laying of a stone monument at the entrance to the site, located near Goodwillie and Stukely roads in West Bolton.Last year, on October 22, 2011, volunteers removed debris, sawed off tree limbs and erected a chain link fence around the site.Up to ten headstones have been identified.“The stone was engraved by Les Monuments Jenne Ltée,” said Fowles.“Brien Bidwell did the engraving and we are very thankful.” The stone was donated by Arthur Mizener. It was delivered to the side of Stukely Road and placed on an old car hood supplied by Robert Hume.Tom Moore, another volunteer, then dragged the stone with his Kuboto tractor to its final destination with the help of other volunteers. On July 27, 2011, a similar stone monument was erected at the Blunt burial site on Bailey Road.Fowles and his band of volunteers have also undertaken measures to preserve the Fuller burial ground, off Bolton Pass Road, in West Bolton.“These cemeteries have historic significance because they hold the remains of some of the earliest settlers of European origin,” says Fowles.“The Fullers, for instance, are descendents of Ralph Fuller and his wife, Elizabeth Elliott, who emigrated from England to Massachusetts in 1617 - three years before the arrival of the Mayflower.” If you wish to help or contribute to the preservation and the restoration of the Last Wayside, Blunt and Fuller burial grounds, or if you have information about the families buried there, please call 450-243-5772 or e-mail: j ohnfowles .art@xplornet.com.Right, volunteers work to secure the stone monument.im- CIMETIERE K LASTWAYSIDl CEMETERY not a member of the Town of Brome Lake Taxpayers Association as are none of my neighbours or acquaintances. Is this a legal association and if so, who are the directors and how many taxpayers are paying members? The new administrative team has not had the opportunity to prove their worth.I must assume the team was selected by council and not hand-picked by the mayor.Give credit where credit is due.Tell us Mr.White, who reported the town activities or un-activities to the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs? It is mentioned by Mr.White that the two contracts for branches and stumps each for $75,000 in November 2009 and November 2010 were illegally authorized. If that be the case, why did council, under the leadership of the mayor, approve payment? If council under the leadership of the mayor queried the payment of $75,000 in November 2009, then maybe it would not have been repeated in 2010.Who was the councillor responsible for overseeing the branches and stumps chipping operation? The council, at each monthly work meeting, has the opportunity of examining the statement of payables and it is at this time that questions should be raised.Surely an amount of $75,000 should attract some questions. Are these statements voted approval without proper scrutiny?Again the mayor has not shown leadership. The administrative structure of the town is that the mayor is the chairman. The councillors and the directors and all decisions are then passed to the director general whose responsibilities are to see that these decisions are implemented. The mayor is the captain of the ship and must swim or sink with it.Everybody else survives.I was a councillor for four years and have nothing but praise for Mr.Bourret and then clerk Catherine Bouchard. They, as administrators, ran a good ship.I will welcome the return of Mr.Bourret and wish him God speed in good health.Letters to the editor are mostly from the same contributors who have not experienced any official position and are always negative in their writings.Despite the criticism toward council, they have a tough job and have attempted to do it admirably. It is ten years since the town provided First Responders service and the introduction of this service was presented by no other than Councillor Tom McGovern.Thank you Tom.Don Wing Foster Knowlton Lions Club Christmas Food Basket Santa Claus is coming to
