As we watched through plate glass some thousands of marathon runners trotting outside along Rideau Street, I was busy studying the Ham en Croûte displayed before us (such being, to me anyway, a more satisfying way to spend an overcast and chilly Sunday). It was a huge roast of beast, completely wrapped in golden pastry sliced on command by an obliging chef. You don’t eat the crust, of course, for it is really quite hard.Ah, but the real prize is what lies underneath that hardened shell - the most utterly succulent, tender and moist meat you can imagine.1 just had to try to make it for myself, and so prevailed on the kitchen to spring loose their recipe. Then I was off to the market.‘Twas simplicity itself. For this field experiment, I chose the best fully cooked boneless smoked ham I could find at my neighbourhood butcher. Not too salty, but packed with full ham flavour. It weighed about 2.25 kilograms and cost $23.06.I also fiddled with the hotel’s pastry recipe by reducing the volume just enough so my stand mixer could handle the mass of it.This is a delicious treat that will easily serve six ravenous diners. It looks beautiful as a table centrepiece and, I dare say, you could even serve it on a special occasion. It takes about three hours to cook.Best to start the procedure in the morning to give yourself plenty of time to make the pastry, let it rise, then wrap the ham before popping into the oven.Ham en Croûte One 2.25-kg (4 pound) boneless, fully cooked and smoked ham For the pastry: 3 cups (750 rnL) water 2 pouches (16 g each) bread yeast 2 teaspoons (10 rnL) salt 7 cups (1.75 L) all-purpose flour For the egg wash: 2 eggs mixed well with 2 tablespoons (25 mL) water Directions:In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine water and bread yeast; set aside 15 minutes to “proof’ or reawaken the yeast.(If the yeast doesn’t swell and become bubbly, then it’s dead and you should buy a fresh batch.) When yeast has proofed, fit the dough hook on the appliance.Add salt and half the flour to the yeasty water.Mix on low speed in the stand mixer, adding flour by 1/4-cup (50-mL) amounts until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.Continue to knead in mixer on low speed for about 8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.Butter a large mixing bowl.Sprin- kle a work surface with flour and form dough into a large ball.Roll it around in the buttered bowl to grease the ball completely, then place bowl with dough inside a plastic grocery bag to sit at room temperature to double in bulk, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. While dough is rising, remove ham from fridge and cut off any netting that may be wrapped outside.Cut the skin off the ham with a sharp knife. With a pastry brush, apply egg wash to the outside of the ham; set aside. After dough has risen, punch it down to deflate, then roll on floured work surface to about 3/4-inch (2-crn) thickness.Wrap dough around ham, pinching edges where required to crimp together.Brush with egg wash and place on greased baking pan (with sides to catch any juices that may leak out).Set aside 1 hour at room temperature while preheating the oven to 325 F (160 C).Brush egg wash lightly over pastry one last time, then bake in oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until pastry turns golden brown. When done, remove and set aside 15 minutes before carving with a sharp knife.Discard the pastry.—CanWest News Service Have great sandwiches for supper By Laura Robin Sandwiches for supper?Absolutely — when you’ve got kids to chauffeur to hockey, when you just need to collapse in front of the TV, or when everyone’s just too busy. But a sandwich doesn’t have to be just a sandwich.Cold meat on cold bread is cold comfort indeed. But use some really good, fresh bread (even if it’s just defrosted from your freezer), add a sauce or a dressing or spread, and use hot, crispy bacon, or grill the whole sandwich until toasty and you’ve got something to get excited about it.The recipe for Caesar Salad Sandwiches is written for one and would certainly be easy enough to bother with even if you’re home alone. But you can handily make this classic for a crowd, too: take a long Italian-style loaf and slice it in half lengthwise.Spread it and fill with lettuce and bacon, just like one big sandwich. Then slice into individual servings. It’s a great lunch idea if you’ve got house-guests over the holidays. The recipe for the Roast Beef and Stilton Sandwiches is from Bon Appetit’s 30-Minute Main Courses (Conde Nast Books).“Even the English would approve of serving these delicious sandwiches with mounds of crisp french fries and some malt vinegar,” the book advises.“Ale to drink, of course.” Make it one of the LCBO’s special winter ales and call it a celebration.Grilled Roast Beef and Stilton Sandwiches Serves four Preparation time: about 15 minutes 1 cup (250 mL) crumbled Stilton cheese 2 tablespoons (25 mL) mayonnaise 1 tablespoon (15 mL) prepared horseradish Eight 3-by 5-inch (8-by-13-cm) sourdough bread slices 1 pound (500 g) thinly sliced roast beef 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced 1 bunch arugula, stems trimmed 2 tablespoons (25 mL) butter Directions: Mash cheese, mayonnaise and horseradish in small bowl until almost smooth.Place bread on work surface and spread cheese mixture on one side of each slice.Top each of four bread slices with one-quarter of the beef, then onion and arugula.Season with pepper.Top with remaining bread, cheese side down.Melt butter in heavy skillet over medium-high heat.Add sandwiches and cook until golden, about 2 minutes per side.Serve hot.Caesar Salad Sandwich Serves one Preparation time: about 10 minutes 2 thick slices sourdough or other bread 2 tablespoons (25 mL) Caesar dressing (recipe below) 2 romaine leaves 1 tablespoon (15 mL) Parmesan cheese shards or grated Parmesan cheese 2 strips crispy cooked bacon or 3 tablespoons (50 mL) pre-cooked real bacon bits or pieces Directions: Toast bread lightly under the broiler or on the grill.Spread dressing evenly over each slice and stack romaine leaves, trimming to fit, on top of once slice.Lay bacon on top and sprinkle with Parmesan.Cover with second piece of toasted bread, dressing side down.Slice in half and serve.—For CanWest News Service i TH E| RECORD January 16 - 4January 16 - January 22, 2004 RECORD - TALK Lebel serves up a perfect Banana Split By Debbie Tacium Ladry Record Correspondent One can easily imagine that Christine Lebel is the kind of person whose kitchen is open to friends and strangers alike. In fact, she has literally recreated her kitchen at Sherbrooke’s Galerie Horace for an exhibit that combines objects and performance art to stimulate questions about culinary tradition, comfort food and identity.“Art is what happens in the midst of life,” Lebel affirms.“For me, it’s important to be able to touch, taste and smell something.I like it when spectators can have a different experience rather than just looking at something.“(This show) is all about sharing, tradition and desire.” For those unfamiliar with the concept of performance art, Lebel is careful to mention that it is not theatre: The artist uses her body and her objects, making gestures that signify something, or that communicate an idea. It’s not pantomime, and yet there’s no script or verbal communication.Currently underway, Lebel’s exhibit takes place at the gallery until Feb.15.She will be present on weekends for the performance aspect of the presentation, which is the preparation of her grandmother’s highly reputed recipe for banana bread.“On Valentine’s Day,” she adds, “I’ll be baking the bread in the shape of a heart. This not only signifies comfort, but it’s also to honour my grandmother, who is unfortunately no longer with us.“It’s like I’ll be winking at her from my installation.” Lebel, originally from Sept-îles but presently residing in Montreal, is an experienced performance artist who has taken her kitchen all over Quebec and to several locales in France, where she was pleased to partake of some of that country’s renowned cuisine. Her theory is that culinary tradition and identity go hand-in-hand, and that contemporary society is losing that personal and familial touch.St-Michel: Cont’d from Page 1 They also participate in various music camps for young people around the world, and have composed and arranged music for theatre and cinema.Their specialty is in classical, traditional, and contemporary (jazz) “We just don’t seem to do our cooking the same way our families used to.We don’t take time to cook a meal among friends, to see each other around a meal, to talk.“We don’t keep the real ones (recipes) anymore, the ones from our families — instead, we put those ones aside and either buy our food readymade from the grocery store, or else we get recipes from newspapers and magazines.” A lament for the modern-day lonely kitchen, the devaluing of traditional “women’s work", and a desire for things past, are only a few of the ideas Lebel explores in her art.The 32-year-old artist, who describes her physical self as “round”, has been known in the past to create chocolate sculptures of herself that she has auctioned off, piece by piece, to members of the audience.“It was really quite funny, and it raised all kinds of questions about the idea of purchasing pleasure, art, a woman’s body.as well as the artificial aspect of appearances,” she continues.“But my current work, with kitchen accessories, the exact same colour of paint you find in my real kitchen — it represents daily life, traditions and identity.“For me, the material speaks: For example, everything that tastes of sugar brings me back to childhood.Sugar, chocolate — these things aren’t necessary for our health, but they’re essential for our pleasure.” She notes that some performance artists have created with meat, but for her, that food stuff is too essential, too important for use in art.She prefers the playful, desire- and comfort-evoking elements of sugar and candy.“I’ve often used food, but also sewing elements in my performance.I want to create some value for these little activities, to tell people they don’t need to be shy or embarrassed about them — whether you’re a man or a woman, cooking and sewing are important things,” she concludes.“It’s the process, not the result repertoire.“There are important things to discover in all kinds of music," says Boulanger “Last year, for example, people really appreciated hearing new arrangements, and ail kinds of 20th century music. They came out with a peaceful impression, and that they’d heard something truly interesting.Music is a universal language, and we’ve got music for all tastes.” PERRY BEATON/SPFCIAL Performance artist Christine Lebel’s new exhibit, Banana Split, is at the Galerie Horace in downtown Sherbrooke until Feb.15.that’s important: The cake, for example, it’s just a pretext for sharing.” And to show that sharing is an important part of the experience, she invites spectators to bring their most cherished recipes for banana bread, and offers an exchange with her grandmother’s favourite. It’s just another one of those times when art imitates life.Banana Split is at the Galerie Horace until Feb.15.For more information on the exhibition and gallery hours, call 819-821-2326.The subsequent concerts, featuring teachers and students from the Collège de Sherbrooke, will be held in the spring, one of them on the week of “We are currently working on our next performance to be held at the North Hatley Unitarian Church, on March 13, to help out the family that sought refuge from the Church this year.” THE RECORD: Would you tell us about the album, With Arms Thrown Wide, that you recently recorded with Rosemary lx Morgan?HARRIS: “Rosemary lx Morgan is a wonderful poet.I loved her work from the moment I saw it.Her poetry has a delightfully musical sound to it.We decided to work together on an album that would feature both poetry and piano. The piece responds to word and flow — in the way that it is read and in the piano accompaniment. The finished album is the result of our sensitivity to the work done by the other, and the chemistry between us as artists.” THE RECORD: You are an artist who uses many different mediums other than music.Would you tell us about your work as a painter and designer?HARRIS: “1 like to work with water- colours mostly.I design album covers for our CDs, which lets me express myself in a totally different way than through my music.I try to create an image that coincides with the message of the album itself.Sometimes, ideas come to me in a dream — resulting in a realistic or sometimes abstract image.” THE RECORD: You have proven through your teaching that a person is never too old to learn. What has led you to this conclusion?HARRIS: “I have students of all ages who come to me to learn the piano.I even have one father who has pledged to take lessons for the five years that his son is attending school here.I really do feel that there is something to be learned every day, no matter what your age.“An adult is actually easier to teach than a child because they are mature enough to be able to grasp the reasoning behind the music, unlike children who seem to go on faith. For that reason, they seem to learn much more quickly.“I believe in putting my beliefs to a test — I have decided to take clarinet lessons.I have found a great teacher in Sherbrooke.I love to play the piano, but you can’t carry it with you wherever you go as you can a clarinet.I like the idea of being able to take my music wherever I go.“My background in music makes it easier to learn in one way, but I still have to go through the routine preparations that are distinctive to the clarinet.I plan to give myself five years and if after that time I am not satisfied with the results — well, I will just try something new.” ORCHESTRE ¦jf symphonique DE SHERBROOKE presents Jonathan Crow Violin On the program : Concertino from José Évangélista (1943- ) Symphonie espagnole en ré mineur op.21 from Edouard Lalo ( 1823-1892) Soloist : Jonathan Crow, violin The Three-Cornered Hat from Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) -Three Dances Capriccio Espagnol, op.34 from Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov (I 844-1908) Espana, Rhapsody for Orchestra from Emmanuel Chabrier ( 1841 -1894) Tickets sold at 820-1000 Regular 30 $, Seniors (60 +) 25 $, Students (to 26 years) 5 $ Groupe Investors Canada RECORD §§ ifflj Ï TVfl Stéphane Laforest Conductor and Artistic Director Colours of Spain In collaboration with Jonathan Crow, violin Saturday, January 24th, 8:00 pm Centre culturel, Université de Sherbrooke iTHfc, page 6 January 16 - January 22, 2004 RECORD =^^=====—~ TALK Kutcher excited about new role Movies CANWEST NEWS SERVICE Ilf fWPT «Ëù «%* «' 'W • -._*•, W; Ashton Kutcher, the funny Michael Kelso on That 70s Show, stars as Evan Trebom, a young man who realizes he can only be made whole by entering the black hole of his past.By Jamie Portman Ashton Kutcher is nervous. You sense it immediately. When he bursts into the room and greets reporters with a rapid-fire “Hello! Hello! Hello!” it seems forced and artificial. There’s visible tension even in the way he deposits his lanky body in a chair and leans forward for his first question. He’s trying hard to relax, but his hands are a giveaway — clenching and unclenching, the knuckles white — as he struggles to keep them under control.Who can blame him?The media have been having a field day over his romance with Demi Moore who, at 41, is 16 years his senior.Furthermore, as if those snide tabloid innuendoes about being Hollywood’s No.1 boy toy weren’t bad enough, he’s also having to deal with unkind speculation about his acting abilities. Those talents are put to the test in his new psychological thriller, The Butterfly Effect, opening Jan.23.Earlier in the day, the film’s directors have told reporters that they initially resisted casting Kutcher as a young man tortured by repressed childhood memories: on the basis of his work on the Fox Network’s That ‘70s Show and in such movies as Dude, Where’s My Car, they were unconvinced he could deliver. Now they say they’re delighted with his performance, but the film is nevertheless arriving at a time when the Internet and gossip columns are full of unflattering rumours about the circumstances of his exit from the new Cameron Crowe movie, Elizabethtown. The tabloid London Daily Mail claims that Crowe hated Kutcher’s read-throughs and let the 25-year-old actor “have it with both barrels.” It’s understandable that Kutcher should fear he’s entering a den of ravenous media beasts.Yet, he ends up suggesting that the session has turned into a pleasant surprise.“I think that you’re fantastic because you’re sitting down and having a conversation with me.I don’t appreciate people that mix things up or hide in bushes with cameras.” But, he adds with a shrug, that kind of media bombardment “seems to come with the territory.” Furthermore, he is trying to maintain a positive frame of mind.“I guess I don’t have anything to be cynical about.I mean — you can take the bad things that happen and you can be angry and you can react to them or you can actively try to over- come them.I don’t want to be the guy actively bouncing off of everyone else.I want to keep actively going at what I want to accomplish and try not to react to the things that kind of get to you.” But he’s anxious to give his version of what happened with the Cameron Crowe film and insists he had to back out after Crowe changed the shooting schedule.Kutcher had blocked out a winter-spring period to work on the movie, and had even begun pre-shooting several episodes of That ‘70s Show in order to accommodate his Elizabethtown role. But when Crowe postponed filming, Kutcher faced a conflict with the start of shooting for the next season of That ‘70s Show.“For me to hold off and do it for the next season was virtually impossible,” Kutcher says. His publicist intervenes to back Kutcher’s version. She also castigates the tabloids for suggesting otherwise and slams In Touch magazine’s claim that Moore bought Kutcher acting lessons for Christmas.“Go and read that lovely item,” the publicist snorts.“Actually, she bought him fun gifts.” Interestingly, the publicist’s intervention marks the only direct reference to Moore during the entire session.Meanwhile, Kutcher seems in denial over the impact on the public of his dating habits. After all, it’s only a year ago that his romance with Brittany Murphy, his costar in Getting Married, was generating headlines — headlines eclipsed by his subsequent hook-up with Moore.Yet, he disagrees when it’s suggested that the different women he’s dated have put him in the spotlight.“Someone may want to argue with that, but that’s fine,” he says stubbornly.Kutcher insists that life is treating him well.“You know what?I’m really happy. And I think that every discouraging, bad, negative obstacle I’ve found in my life has been there for a reason .there for me to overcome and by doing that to become a better person.“So, knowing that, I don’t think 1 would change a thing because like this movie (The Butterfly Effect) says — I’m not going to judge God, I’m not going to judge the things that He’s done.” And, of course, The Butterfly Effect — his first attempt at “dark drama” -is his reason he’s here today. The New Line suspense film marks the directing debut of Eric Bress and J.Mackye Gruber, the writing team responsible for last year’s Final Destination 2.They wrote The Butterfly Effect nearly seven years ago and have guarded its fortunes obsessively — remaining determined to film it themselves once they found a studio willing to back the complex suspense piece about a young man scarred by childhood traumas he can’t remember.Evan Treborn (Kutcher) realizes he can only be made whole by entering the black hole of his past and reliving long-suppressed childhood terrors -violence, child sexual abuse, parental betrayal — and seeking to heal his own broken life as well as those of his childhood friends.Ajournai he has kept as a child forms the unexpected conduit by which he travels back in time and seeks to rewrite history, but he soon learns that his actions are having devastating consequences. For Kutcher, the role marks a major departure from the carefree and frequently clueless Michael Kelso on That ‘70s Show. But he denies he’s now trying to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor.“I do comedy out of choice,” he says flatly.“It’s fun to do.1 like to make people laugh.I like to make people feel good.” But when he read The Butterfly Effect, he wanted the role.“I thought the character’s deficiencies were a great metaphor for society in general. He blocks out his traumatic moments, and I think that as a society and as a people, we block out things that are going on.”We don’t want to think about the fact that somewhere across the world there’s a brothel where five-year-old girls are being prostituted out.“We don’t want to think about the violence that goes on in the world because it’s not in front of us.” The film’s directors say they were totally wrong in their preconceptions of Kutcher, and that once they sat down with him at his home to discuss the project they were impressed with his seriousness and dedication.—CanWest News Service RECORD TALK January 16 - Jànu'Arÿ 22, 2004 PAGE 7 Bouge De Là explores the five senses Dance By Leah Fitzgerald Choreographer Hélène Langevin was thinking about getting her kids away from television and computer when the idea for her newest show struck.“I thought it was more important for them to be outside experiencing a tree, the leaves, the smell, than seeing one on the Internet,” she said.Langevin, choreographer for the Montreal dance company Bouge De Là, thinks a lot about children. The company focuses on contemporary dance shows aimed at children. Her latest show, Les cinq doights de la main (the five fingers of the hand), is about the five senses and how they work together, just like fingers.“If you take away sight, (then) sound and touch become very important,” she said.“They all work together to give you a picture.” The show is made up of seven vignettes exploring the senses. For in- stance, for taste, Langevin used ogres attacking food.“They are a bit gross,” she said.“It’s about how they approach the food, and how they eat it.” For touch, the vignette features acrobatics by the dancers of the company.“The lifts and jumps were about how you touch the floor and how you touch the other dancer,” she said.“Touch is what gives you balance.” The show also features a multimedia aspect with video used to show the audience distrust of their sense of sight.“The video shows things that are impossible,” she said.“The children’s first question is always ‘how did they do that?’” Langevin has 63 shows planned for the coming year.“It’s great,” she says.“Some companies only do that in three years.” Bouge de là is still a young company - this its fourth year. The company is focused on children’s shows.Langevin’s first production for the company was called La Tribu Hurluberlu, which was shown to over 25,000 children around Montreal. So far, Bouge de là has only toured Quebec.Langevin plans to expand into Canada, but says it’s not going to be easy.“The only way to be known is to get into a showcase, and you have to be chosen by other artists to get into that,” she explained.“I’m making contacts and I hope to make more.” Langevin has been a choreographer for about 14 years. She started as a dancer at 17."I always was a mover,” she said.“I was athletic — swimming, skiing, skipping rope.I found sports too repetitive.Dance fulfilled the need for different movement.” Langevin soon discovered it was choreography that was her true love.Creating her most recent show in the studio was fulfilling.“The dancer has the pleasure to dance. The choreographer has the pleasure of creating the dance.” Langevin also likes to teach children about dance. She recently had a grant to teach dance in schools in Montreal.“I like to show boys that dance is movement," she said.“They have the stereotype that it’s ballet.I ask them, ‘do you like to move?’ and they always say yes.I tell them they will like to dance.” For Langevin, dance is first and foremost just moving — turning, jumping, rolling on the floor, falling.“You choose your style after,” she explained.“First, you learn to move.” Bouge de là performs Les cinq doights de la main at Centennial Theatre on Sunday, Jan.18 at 2 p.m.Tickets are $5 and are available by calling 819-822-9692.Music U of S showcases its student ensembles By Leah Fitzgerald Being daring always pays off for the music department of the University of Sherbrooke. The school is holding its fifth annual fundraising concert, titled L'Audace porte fruit, on Jan.18.This year, for the first time, only student ensembles are on the program. The vocal ensemble, Ensembles à vents de Sherbrooke, the University of Sherbrooke stage band, the instrumental ensemble and the percussion ensemble will all appear on stage at Salle Maurice-O’Bready at the Centre Culturel on Sunday. There could have been even more groups on stage.“We have many ensembles at the university now,” said percussion professor Mario Boivin.“We really wanted to show off the best.” Boivin said several of the ensembles have made great strides forward in the last couple of years. He directs the percussion ensemble, which has been getting recognition on the university music circuit.“We just went on tour,” he said.“We played at McGill, Laval, the conservatory in Rimouski and at the University of Moncton.” The percussion ensembles will play two pieces to open the concert.“There’s something short before us,” Boivin explained.“But we hope to set the mood.” Their set will start with Ghanaia by Matthias Schmitt, which is a solo piece for marimba that’s been adapted for the ensemble. The second takes the ensemble out of Africa and into Japan for Scott R.Harding’s Taiko. Both pieces are very recent — written in the last 10 years — but are faithful to the music traditions they draw on.“They’re both pieces that are very festive,” he said.“Taiko starts out more austere but it becomes rhythmic and a little aggressive. It’s about the competition between the three soloists to be the loudest, the most agile and the most enduring.” The ensemble, which is made up of eight percussionists, has its own concert at the Salle Maurice-O’Bready on Feb.15 at 4 p.m.The university’s stage band has also been making waves lately. The group will be recording again this year for Radio Canada for a national broadcast. This will be the third time. The stage band has also been touring its jazz, big band and swing music on the university music circuit.“They really know how to please a crowd,” Boivin said.Boivin said to expect an accessible program of music for all ages. The annual University of Sher- brooke music department benefi concert takes place at the Salle Mau rice-O’Bready of the Centre Culture on Sunday. For tickets and informa tion, contact the box office at 819 820-1000.MS lives here.Multiple sclerosis never hits just one Decomposing Maggie shows author’s assurance By Joe Wiebe Maggie Cooper, the protagonist of Victoria author Ann Eriksson’s moving first novel, is overwhelmed by grief following the death of her husband, Peter. She pours her depression and sorrow into elegiac baskets she weaves from kelp and other ocean plants.Obsessed with trying to craft the perfect vessel for his ashes, she retreats to her workroom and shuts out the rest of her life, including her son, Liam, and daughter, Joy.’’Around her, mounded floor to ceiling against every wall, were baskets, dozens of baskets I.They lined the windowsills, flowed across the floor, under the table and out the door into the hallway like an ocean wave surging through the house.” Memories of her husband, dead too young from a virulent cancer, keep her up at night or give her disturbing dreams.Every day, she wears the same clothes — an old paint-spattered sweatshirt of Peter’s — and eats little more than a can of soup. She leaves home only to collect kelp and seashells for her baskets; on one such journey, she is mistaken for a bag lady.Readers may have difficulty liking Maggie at first; they may want her to deal with her grief and move on.In this way, she is reminiscent of Margaret Laurence’s Hagar Shipley in The Stone Angel, although she is still in the prime of life.Maggie is so mired in depression that BLACK CAT BOOKS - Now ignores her teenage daughter until Joy finally leaves home to live with her uncle. She misses Joy’s high school graduation and can barely muster a smile when Liam and his fiance announce that Maggie is going to be a grandmother. But memory is also the lens through which the reader is shown Maggie and Peter’s story.First-person accounts that might be journal entries from her younger days alternate with the griefladen events of the present, allowing a fuller, richer character to emerge. As in The Stone Angel, by the end of the book the reader can empathize with Maggie and understand the walls she has put up around herself.Eriksson knows what she’s writing about — she lost her first husband to pancreatic cancer 13 years ago.Asked how autobiographical the book is, she said she sees Maggie as “a composite character inspired by not only my own experiences, but also by the experiences of many people I have known or heard stories about, who have dealt with the death of a loved one.” She said she always wanted to write fiction, but “something always got in the way — school, a new baby, another adventure, tragedy." She started writing Decomposing Maggie in 2000, as a working single parent in her 40s with two children.“I de cided if I was going to write, I’d better get busy or shut up about it.” Decomposing Maggie is set in Vancouver and on Galiano Island, where she lived in the 1980s.It effectively evokes the sights and smells of the West Coast.Turnstone Press seems to have struck a rich vein of gold in Victoria.Another of its Victoria authors, John Gould, made it to the Governor-General’s Award shortlist with Kilter: 55 Fictions.Ann Eriksson, who shows off an assurance beyond what might be expected from a first-time novelist, has already completed the first draft of her second novel.-Can West News Service Books George Orwell still relevant today By Rebecca Wigod D.J.Taylor’s biography of George Orwell was shortlisted for Britain’s Whitbread Prize this month, showing that the man born Eric Arthur Blair just over 100 years ago remains a focus of lively interest.Ian Slater, a Vancouver thriller writer well versed in Orwell’s ideas, says the short-lived, highly principled author is “as relevant now as he was in 1948, when he wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four.“He was a man who was claimed by both the left and the right,” but he didn’t belong to either.“He belonged to himself. He would judge every issue on the merits of the case.” Seated at a high window table in The Well, the Vancouver coffeeshop where he drafts his books by hand, Slater spoke over the clatter of cups about Orwell’s thought, particularly his belief that totalitarianism doesn’t exist only in states but can also be a state of mind.“All his writing, including Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, points to a totalitarian state of mind,” said Slater, whose 1985 study of Orwell’s ideas, The Road to Airstrip One (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 302 pages), was recently re-released.“We all, as individuals, have what I might call a totalitarian gene,” he began, in something of a lecturer’s manner. In recent years.Slater, who is in his early 60s, has taught a University of B.C.history course called War and Society, and before that he taught in its Arts One program.“It comes out when there’s something we particularly dislike. To use myself as an example, I’m appalled when I read about how gangs have taken over so much.At three in the morning, if I happen to be thinking about that, the remedy would of course be to have a moratorium on civil liberties for three months and clean them up.“The police know who they are.Go pick them up, put them in trucks, take them up to the Far North and have them work, do something useful.“But you see, if you do that in that case, pretty soon down the road, you’re included in somebody else’s totalitarian view — that’s the danger I “That’s the important lesson of Orwell’s writing, and why he will always be relevant." Slater said prime minister Pierre W Trudeau’s handling of the 1970 FLQcrisis is still being debated, partly because of Orwell.Since the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, that tension has been at the front of everybody’s mir ± Choke Point, Slater’s next thriller (due out in March from Ballantine Books) has to do with terrorism and is book nine of his ominously titled WWIII series.Slater’s best-known thriller is probably Firespill (1977) about an oil spill off the West Coast that catches fire.“A lot of my novels are set in the marine environment,” said the Australian-born writer who was a marine geology technician before earning his PhD in political science the year Firespill came out.In The Road to Airstrip One, a book of a different kind, Slater writes that Orwell coined the term Cold War and made other contributions to “the common language of despair” with “Big Brother," “Newspeak” and “doublethink.” Slater also writes that Orwell chose the name Winston Smith for the protagonist of Nineteen Eighty-Four because it neatly blends privilege (Winston, as in Churchill) with lack of privilege (Smith, as in Everyman).Slater and his wife, Marian, gave Orwell’s original last name to their son, the actor Blair Slater.—CanWest News Service — T“‘ RECORD TALK January 16 - January 22, 2004 page 9 Pregnancy won’t put end to Will & Grace By Jamie Portman Debra Messing is ecstatic about becoming a mother for the first time this summer, but she’s also figuring out strategies for not looking pregnant on upcoming episodes of Will & Grace. That means that Messing and the producers will be resorting to some discreet ways of covering up.“It’s not going to impact Will & Grace in the sense that Grace is going to be pregnant. So we’re being a little creative with the way we do scenes and the way I dress.I have lots of shopping bags and pocket books and coats that cover my tummy.“I think it’s sort of a wink to the audience.I mean — we’ll do our best. We’re never going to be able to hide it entirely, but our fans now know that I’m pregnant, and part of the fun I think is tuning in and seeing how to hide it.” She points out she’s certainly not the first TV star to be faced with concealing a pregnancy while shooting a series.“They’ve been doing it for decades.Julia Louis-Dreyfus had several babies while she was on Seinfeld. The list goes on and on and on.I’m not creating anything that hasn’t already been addressed, so I’m lucky in that regard.” She confirms there was a discussion about making Grace pregnant in the series — a discussion that lasted “about a second.” Meanwhile, Messing, who co-stars with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller in the new film comedy, Along Came Polly, says she and husband Daniel Zelman are looking forward to parenthood.“I feel wonderful.I’m beside myself with happiness. This is something I’ve wanted my whole life. It’s everything I hoped for.And I can’t wait to meet our child.” Messing knows she will now need to maintain the right balance between work and family, and although Will & Grace is currently her career linchpin, she’s anxious to continue doing film and theatre as well.In Along Came there with film and television.I’m at my happiest when I’m doing all three.“I don’t know whether or not there will be a time when I’m just doing films, but .every time I try and plan what my life is expect when he discovered he would be co-starring with Mandy Moore in Chasing Liberty, because he’d heard a lot of horror stories about young Hollywood actresses. So he says he was delighted to discover Moore was definitely not “a diva bitch.” In fact, the two got along famously. As for Moore, she says the two of them hit it off from their very first encounter when Goode was one of half a dozen young actors auditioning with her for the role.It turned out the casting people wanted her to do a succession of kissing scenes.“No one told me that we were going to have to kiss in the scene with all these different guys, so it was a little off-putting and awkward to meet someone for the first time and have to jump right into things .trying to impress this room full of suits. It’s just weird .“So I just tried to have a good time and be myself and be carefree and fun. Then, the next time 1 saw Matthew, he had the part and we went out to lunch. You just try to become friends and know someone —and who couldn’t get along with him? He’s just a good guy.” And yes, Goode is a good kisser.John Wayne Disney’s Touchstone Pictures division won’t be happy with the latest news from MGM Home Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow admitted recently from the set of Joey’s apartment, on stage 24 of the Warner Bros, studio complex. They spoke about the good times, past and present, even as the show’s writers, Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, wrestled with the show’s final scene, which will be taped in two weeks before a handful of friends, family and key crew members only. There will be no live studio audience. The hour-long finale will air in May, putting a cap on one of television’s most beloved and successful series after 10 seasons, six People’s Choice awards and 55 Emmy nominations, six of them as best comedy series.Friends will leave the air as the top-rated situation comedy on network television and the number onerated comedy in syndicated reruns, as well as being the most-watched network comedy in prime time for six consecutive seasons, topping the record previously held by All in the Family and The Cosby Show.Despite continuing ratings supremacy, Friends is one of the most expensive programs on television to make, and its actors — Aniston, Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox and David Schwimmer — want to move on to other things. The program was to end last season, but last-minute negotiations convinced the actors to give it one last curtain call. This, however, is indeed the end.“These last two weeks have been very hard,” Aniston said."We’re all feeling a bit like china right now. We’re all speeding toward a brick wall, toward inevitable pain.So that sounds like fun, huh?” “And we’re going to smash into a million pieces,” Kudrow added, “and never be able to be put back together again.I imagine it’s what it must be like to get divorced from someone you still love, when you still have all the good feelings and you care deeply, but you know it’s the right time and the right thing to do.That doesn’t make it any less painful.” Perry concurred: “Fifty per cent of me feels it’s the right time, it’s the right time to be closing this. And the other 50 per cent of me is how everybody else feels deep down. This is more than a show. It’s been a wonderful support group, a good group of people who love each other, who came together to make people laugh. And what better thing is there to do than that? It’s tough in a way.You just have to hope that if one door closes, another door opens.” The finale, Kauffman promises, will feel “like an episode of Friends. It’s not going to be a gimmick superimposed on the show. It’s still going to be our show.” Even though taping the final scene is still two weeks away, Perry says they’ve still had a chance to reflect on what Friends meant to its loyal following.“It was a nice place to be,” Perry said.“There was a little bit of talk after 9/11, when the ratings went up a little bit, that it was comfort television. The writing was always brilliant, and it was a show you could always count on to make you laugh and make you feel better on a weekly basis.” —CanWest News Service sixth album, And The Crowd Goes Wild, comes right on the heals of his Greatest Hits, which featured a new track, the smash ‘19 Somethin’, an up-tempo number, most likely his biggest hit to date. The unexpected success of this crowd-pleaser left the singer in a dilemma because the Georgia native had built his career singing moving ballads. The new album is different from any previous collection he has released to this point, offering friskier and faster numbers in the style of‘19 Somethin’.Is this a step in a new direction, a new angle to approach country music or just something Wills wanted to experiment with.Only the future will tell. His reputation as a great ballad singer doesn’t mean he doesn’t excel as well with more uptempo songs.Anyone who has seen Wills in concert before, has discovered an artist who can offer great ballads but also some more rocking material. The singer has an extended vocal range that goes beyond and above anything we have heard from him on records.Something new this time around is Wills, the coproducer. This album rocks a little more than his previous efforts, but with his awesome, pure country voice everything still sounds like it should. The title track is a snappy number with a catchy sing-along chorus about self-empowerment and a great lesson of life.‘He’s a Cowboy’ is a beautiful song on which Wills’ silky smooth baritone shines. The album offers two worthy ballads, ‘That’s A Woman’ and ‘What She Sees In Me’, about heartfelt family values. They are definitely tributes to the women in his life; his mother, his wife and his daughters. The album offers a cover of Ronnie Milsap’s ‘Prisoner of The Highway’.Not only does he cover the song, but it also features Milsap himself.‘This Southern Rocker’, a tribute to truckers, showcases the singer under a new day.The result is surprisingly interesting.‘What Hurts The Most’ is another great ballad, while ‘Nothin’ But A Suntan’ is a slick and sexy number penned by James Slater, a songwriter who seems very popular lately.‘How Bad Do You Want It’ is a story song about the aspirations you have in life and the determination and hard work that are involved in reaching your goals in life.Despite the seriousness of the topic, the number is catchy enough. Most of the material on this album is radio-friendly and it should produce a few popular singles. It will provide Wills with more up-tempo material for his live concerts which is an asset.Of course people who are true fans of the great ballads he’s been giving us so far, such as ‘Wish You Were Here’, will have to accustomed to the different style. On the swinging side there’s also the fun ‘Married In Mexico’ and T Just Close My Eyes’, two numbers that will get everyone to sing along.Since the beginning of his career, Wills has beén a constant hit maker, but has never yet become a superstar. Now that the focus is not only on ballads, he might acquire quite a few new fans, who like their country music set to a different rhythm. The ultimate highlight here comes with ‘Singer In A Band’ which features a more familiar Wills. He sings with rare passion a song that could indeed be the story of his life.It is all about a humble singer who is embarrassed to be considered a hero by his fans when deep down, to him, the real heroes are people who make real sacrifices.People such as firefighters, cancer patients, soldiers and all those who dedicate their lives for the welfare of others. This one is a real tearjerker, it comes from his heart and soul.I note that Wills hardly collaborated to the songwriting for this collection, which could explain the difference in the musical style.I must admit that I enjoy seeing Wills venture into new paths. It is also enjoyable to hear his past hits.Wills has never released a bad album, but hopefully this one will take him much higher, exactly where he deserves to be.Country Connection Jessie Aulis &kk Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada Until there’s a
