Brome County - ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ » ——Mum.™ ^ NEW Wednesday, November S, 2008 LAC BROME 461 Knowlton Rd.8 a.m.to 9 p.m.Michel Ginette Magog Farnham 231 Sherbrooke St.999 Principale St.E.Cowansville hosts entrepreneurial evening BflBMUei PHOTO COURTESY OF DOMAINE PINNACLE Wendy Denman Brome County News Correspondent Anyone thinking of starting their own business, as well as those who have already taken a step towards self-employment, will benefit from an event taking place in Cowansville on November 12th.Simply called an Entrepreneurial, the event offers a chance to network and gather information from professionals, a motivational speech by Charles Crawford, owner of Domaine Pinnacle and an exhibition highlighting local initiatives by successful entrepreneurs.“We held a very successful daylong entrepreneurial conference in Bromont last fall and this special evening is a follow-up,” says Elsa Carlier, youth entrepreneurial counsellor at Centre Jeunesse Emploi for the Eastern Townships.“That’s why the conference is free to the public, we want to help inspire those people, particularly youth, and let them know there are many avenues of help for young entrepreneurs.” The Regional Entrepreneurial Table of Consultation of Brome-Missisquoi and Haute Yamaska sponsors these events. This group, which meets regularly, is comprised of members from a variety of local organizations, including - Centre d’aide aux enterprises (CAE) Haute Yamaska et region, CLD Brome-Missisquoi, CLD Haute Yamaska, Chamber of Commerce of Haute Yamaska and Region, Chamber of Commerce of Cow-ansville and Region, Val des Cerfs School Board and the Townshippers.Association.“Centre Jeunesse Emploi is leading this group. We feel it is very important to co-ordinate with all the various organizations that are able to help entrepreneurs,” said Carlier.“Our mission is to inform, train and support people in the pre-start-up and start-up of businesses.“There are many possibilities for self-employment in the Eastern Townships, we greatly encourage people to use their creative talents and their ideas and start their own businesses.” The participation of Townshippers Association gives a strong Eng-lish voice to the group.“It is important that English entrepreneurs have a say in this," says George Courville, coordinator for health and social services, Townshippers Association.“We really encourage our young people to investi- gate self-employment opportunities. There are many different types of services and grants available, which is why networking is so important.“This event gives people a chance to meet some of the decision makers and gives the public a chance to see the type of businesses that are currently successful,” said Courville.“From my point of view, strong economic development means a healthier population, the two go hand in hand.” Charles Crawford, the event’s keynote speaker, represents one of the region’s success stories.Founded in 2000 near Frelighsburg, Domaine Pinnacle is a family owned and operated orchard and cidery, winning numerous awards and international recognition. The ciders are available at most SAQ.outlets, at the Domaine’s boutique, and in select markets worldwide.“Charles Crawford will speak about his entrepreneurial journey and the im- portance of marketing your product or business,” said Carlier.“He is strong motivational speaker who puts a great deal of emphasis on networking.” The Entrepreneurial Table has invited a number of businesses leaders, local politicians and dignitaries to the event. An exhibition area will feature kiosks where local entrepreneurs will present their products and services, allowing them to extend their network.“It is part of our mission to bring together local entrepreneurial organizations,” said Carlier.“Next year we are planning another daylong event with seminars and workshops, this in an ongoing initiative.” The Entrepreneurial event takes place on Wednesday, November 12th, from 5 p.m.to 7 p.m.at Theatre des Tournesols, 331 Chemin Brousseau, Cowansville.Free to the public. Those wishing to book a kiosk for $50 should call Elsa Carlier at (450) 776-7700.Charles Crawford believes marketing is key to success in owning a business.Where did that pole come from?DAVE ANDERSON House hauler hits Hydro poll and halts traffic in Knowlton last Monday.IE9 Pierre Marziali "V* V Pharmacist Familiprix pierre.ntarziali@familiprix.com Hours: Mon.-Wed.Î) - Brome County Ne ws Wednesday, November 5, 2008 page 3 Cadastral reform heading into second phase Jessica Brown Record Correspondent - Knowlton If it seems you’ve been seeing an awful lot of surveying being done in the Eastern Townships, you’re right. The long-term cadastral reform project is slowly but surely working its way into Brome Lake, Waterloo and Cowansville.Wondering what it’s all about? In short, the provincial government decided their patchwork quilt document which registers the property lines throughout Quebec was out of date and incomplete.“It dates back to the 1860’s.” Says Gilles Benoit from the firm, Barbe, Cote, Jodoin, Leger and Associates, who are doing some of the surveying. In order to make sure each property is properly represented, the Natural Resources ministry started the massive process of subcontracting the surveying job throughout the province.Chances are you have already received a letter explaining the need for your cooperation in providing any documents you may have in your possession to make the process easier. Not to worry, at the onset, this process will cost you nothing. However, reading between the lines, it could cost you somewhere along the way.The cadastral lines provide the basis for taxation. The firm has just finished the first phase of the project. The second phase for Knowlton begins in January and will take a year to complete. At that point there will be a public consultation which will allow property owners to correct any errors.Property owners can ask for a review of their property if they find any inconsistencies, which is why it is important to attend the public meetings. The most recent public consultation took place on October 22nd.The provincial project has been underway for 20 years and they expect it will take at least 12 more years to complete. It is estimated that 750, 000 properties that contain inaccuracies will be corrected while another 850 000 properties that aren’t even listed on the cadastral plan will be now included.Knowlton Lions Annual Santa Claus Parade H&ssni CLUB à ______L With December fast approaching, it is time once again to think of the Knowlton Lions Santa Claus Parade which will be held on Saturday, December 6th at 1 p.m.Last year’s parade had more than 25 entries and we are hoping for even more for our 2008 parade. There will be no pre-registration this year. You only need to appear at Windmill Plastics, 290 Victoria at noon where registration and judging will take place. The four categories are: Business, Family, Group and Individual.Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well a honorable prize in each category.Horses and riders, dancers and musicians are all welcome.Children are invited to dress in costume to ride on the Lion’s float with Santa Claus.A few costumes are available on a first come basis at Laborex, 318 Victoria at 12:00, but they may choose to wear one of their own.The Parade will begin at 290 Victoria, turn left on Knowlton Road, Route 104, turn left on Lakeside, Route 243, then left on Victoria and end at Knowlton Academy at 81 Victoria where prizes will be distributed to the winners. The Knowlton Harmony Band will provide festive music and hot chocolate will be served while you await Santa’s visit and the distribution of candy bags. For more information you may call Jane Willey, 450-292-5785, or Bev Crandall, 450-243-6608.Come and join in the fun and help the Lions make our 2008 Parade the biggest and best ever.Christmas Food Baskets Those wishing to apply for a Christmas Food Basket may pick up an application form at the Community Center in Knowlton.Residents of South and West Bolton, Lac Brome and Brome are eligible for the baskets, which come in large and small sizes according to the number of dependants.Applicants will be asked to present proof of need, income and number of dependants.Deadline for application is November 28th .Remembrance Day Breakfast/Brunch The Lions Club Remembrance Day Breakfast/Brunch to honour local veterans will be held on Sunday, Nov.16th from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m.in the cafeteria at Knowlton Academy.- Submitted by Errol Frechette Bill Richardson Speaking m Afcwemfcer 264 Knowlton Road 450- 242-2242 www.bromclakcbooks.ca Children remember Marie-Gabrielle Jessica Brown Record Correspondent - Knowlton It was a difficult week for students and staff at Ecole St.Edouard in Knowlton. The sudden death of seven year old Marie Gabrielle Nadeau was a shock for everyone.A professional support team from the school board was brought in on Wednesday morning to assist teachers and students in dealing with the emotional fall-out that occurs as a result of this type of tragedy. On Thursday, Marie-Gabrielle’s little desk was moved out of the first grade classroom.A memorial was held in the gym where all the children in the school had the opportunity to express their grief by writing notes to her telling her what they would remember most.According to school principal, Daniel Bedard, the process went smoothly and offered everyone a chance to heal.Bedard said it allowed the children a chance to deal with their grief and then turn the page.¦ The sad contrast with the Halloween preparations going on at the school made it a little confusing for some and yet gave children the chance to still get through the day without too much sadness. One little girl told her mother, “It’s a sad day and a happy day at the same time.” In a class with only 6 girls, her presence will certainly be missed.Parents, including myself, who participated in class outings over the past two years, will surely remember her quiet presence. She was always ready to hold my hand with a shy smile.Marie-Gabrielle will be missed.Starting November 6th to November 13th, 2008 HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Musical comedy, PG, 1h52 (Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens) Friday 19h00 21h15 Saturday 15h00 19h00 21h15 Sunday 15h00 19h30 Monday-Thursday 19h30 Quantum of Solace (James Bond 007) November 14, 2008 bine® % Théâtre Princess Theater 141 Principale.Cowansville QC J2K 1J3 r www.theatreprincess.com Tel.450-263-5900 Brome Count]' NEWS The BCN papers have been in the weekend Publi-Sacs now for 2 years. From now on BCN papers wil be delivered in Publi-Sac every Wednesday. Our new deadlines will be: For classified ads, Card of Thanks, Death Notices, etc.deadline is Monday at 1:00 p.m.sharp.For display ads deadline is Wednesday 4:00 p.m.There are extra BCN copies dropped off at: • Flanaghans • Brome Lake Books • IGA • Dépanneur Rouge • Bockus Garage in Cowansville page 4 Wednesday, November 5, 2008 Brome County News ALCOHOL ADS ARE NEVER OUT OF LINE.TRUE FALSE HAVE YOU SEEN ANY ALCOHOL ADS THAT APPEAR TO HAVE CROSSED A LINE?PLEASE LET US KNOW.Alcohol is not just another product, which is why alcohol advertising and promotion are governed by rules of ethics based on our social values. When you contact the Ethics Council of the Alcoholic Beverage Industry in Québec, you're addressing an independent organization with the power to act.The Ethics Council renders its decisions quickly and your anonymity is guaranteed. For more information or to file a complaint: www.educalcool.qc.ca/ethics info@consei leth ique.qc .ca DE L’INDUSTRIE QUÉBÉCOISE DES BOISSONS ALCOOLIQUES Viewpoint Jeremy Labrecque The ecology of the global financial crisis When is the last time you went an entire day without hearing the words ‘global financial crisis’?Our existence was continuing happily along, most of us blissfully unaware of the existence of sub-prime mortgages and of a liquidity crisis, until mid-September when it became a near-impossibility to turn on either the television or the radio without being reminded, in not so casual terms, that these are tumultuous times. The complexity of the issues forced the media to enroll its readership in a crash course in economic blundering making unwilling experts of us all and in a short period of time, trillions of dollars were mobilized, banks were nationalized and stock markets rose and fell like a clichéd roller coaster leaving its riders feeling nauseated and wanting their money back - or at least to just get off the darned thing. What could any of this have to do with the environment?More than you would think.Like it or not, these cycles are the nature of the ecology we live in.Ecology?Surely 1 meant economy?Well, yes and no.Essentially, both words come from similar Greek roots. While ecology is literally “the science of the house or dwelling” economy is simply “the management of the house or dwelling”.Ecology studies how our surroundings work and economics tells us how to manage them making the human economy essentially a very specialized human ecosystem. While the economy differs from natural ecosystems in many obvious and important ways, this global financial crisis is an example that our human ecosystem is subject to some of the same cycles of perturbation that exist in nature.Think of an old growth forest. It is beautiful, diverse and productive.Productive forests produce a lot of biomass, dead branches and leaves that cover the forest floor waiting to decompose and be reabsorbed into the tree. When conditions become really dry, all it takes is a small spark and thousands of hectares of forest can be lost. When this happens the cycle must restart from the beginning, but the new forest won’t be identical to the old one.It will depend on many things that were decided in the previous cycle like the seed bank in the ground and on chance events like trees surviving the fire or seeds arriving via animal or wind, dispersal. All this to say that the new forest will be similar to the old one, but not exactly the same.In case some of you are tempted to take the metaphor too far, I’m not implying the economy is going to burn to the ground but that there are fires here and there.Certain business ideas and approaches will survive these economic fires and will be part of the new cycle and some old ones will not.The new economic cycle will be similar to the old one but it won’t be identical.Whereas a forest that burns down can’t choose to be replaced by a forest that is less likely to burn down, we do have the ability to change direction when a system breaks down. This is the nice thing about having big brains, and this is a great understatement, it makes us humans better at See Labrecque on page 8 PURCHASING IMMEDIATELY High value offered Canadian paintings Bellefleur, Borduas, Carr, Cullen, Dallaire, Fortin, Franchère, Gagnon, Heword, Huot, Krieghoff, Lemieux, Milne, Morrice, Pellan, Pilot, Riopelle, Roberts, Savage, Suzor-Côté, Group of 7, American & European Masters Complimentary verbal appraisal lor the names mentionned above Galerie Claude Lafitte since 1975 2160 Crescent st.Montréal, Québec lafitte" lafitte.com 514-842-1270 Wednesday, November 5, 2008 page 5 Brome County News stmas tlW ?., .J%*r ,1 ownsM PRODUCTION WELDER KTX.OKI) Boutiaua Co newt *r Tr&44»»*t TurKiiy or CkX«VP*»0*>f>f * < .«V, Mr rn$ of tlftppy tteluihy*!
