¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ firm* C&fc-V [wi ' l V Daniel Dion, Mario Sirois, Normand Savoie, Claudette Giguere and Richard Burcombe: Serving up smoked meat to help catch the bad guys.By Maurice Crossfield The regional chapter of info-crime will be holding a smoked meat lunch at the Brasserie de la Rivière in Cowansville next Thursday.“The main goal is to raise awareness of info-crime,” said Normand Savoie, president of info-crime Brome-Mis-sisquoi/Haute-Ya-maska.“It is a program that works.Eighty-fivè per cent of the information we re- the information they give. The information is then passed on to the police force investigating the crime. There’s also an incentive, in the form of rewards of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual. So how does an anonymous caller actually get the reward?Savoie answered: “At the first call the caller is given a file number.Later, if they see an arrest they can contact info-crime with that number. They can then specify where they want the reward sent, to a restaurant or a gas station or whatever. The money is then delivered, and the caller can pick it up from there.” “It’s really, really anonymous." said Lt.Richard Bur-combe of the Brome-Mis-sisquoi Sûreté du Québec. It also pays off for the police.Savoie cited examples, such as when a motorhome was stolen recently in Longueuil, and was tracked down via a call to info-crime.A similar result came from a call concerning a stolen fifth wheel truck in Sherbrooke, which was found in Victoriav- MAUR1CE CROSS HELD i lie."I don’t think it is as well known in this area," said Mario Sirois, owner of the Brasserie de la Rivière."But I also believe it is important for the region.” The Thursday, Sept.28 lunch will cost $10, $5 of which will go to fund info-crime activities in the region, primarily further awareness-raising activities, such as conferences and an upcoming bracelet program aimed at keeping young people out of street gangs.“It’s not so much to raise money as it is to make info-crime better known," said Daniel Dion, a former police officer and regional spokesman for info-crime.The Brasserie de la Rivière is located at 204, de la Rivière, in Cowansville.Along with the smoked meat lunch patrons will also get a complementary info-crime coffee mug.If you have any information about a crime, call the info-crime line at BROME COUNTY NEWS Wednesday, September 20, 2006 page 11 The ‘Brome JTake 2006 Qdgk Festival Knowlton Sep 23-24 / Sept 30 ¦ Oct 1 Duck in for a tasty treat It’s gonna be a quackerjack of a celebration. This year’s Knowlton Duck Festival is a landmark event, notes Brigitte St-Julien.The festival recovered from controversy and a lack of interest to successfully relaunch last year, says St-Julien, and organizers are looking forward to an even bigger turnout for this year’s street party.A lot of effort has gone into this. For a full year, St-Julien has juggled her day job, as the marketing manager of the internationally known Brome Lake Ducks farm, with her volunteerism for the town’s chamber of commerce and its festival organizing committee.“It’s a lot of work,” she says. She started right after the end of last year’s duck fest, meeting once a month with other volunteers to arrange to make grant applications, contact chefs and book entertainment, until she ended up giving a half-day every week.“It’s a surprising amount of work, given that it’s only two weekends.” The result is the Brome Lake duck fest, that takes over the whole town of Knowlton from 11 a.m.to 5 p.m.on two weekends, Sept.23 and 24, and Sept.30 and Oct.1.Big top tents, entertainers for grownups and kids, and food and craft kiosks will dot Coldbrook Park and, in fact, the entire town (there are no road closures, however).Artists, musical acts — the list is long. And of course, there’s the duck.Braised, boiled, fried — you name it, you’ll probably be able to find it during this gastronomic fair. Some of the area’s best chefs have been working out new duck recipes just for this event. For the first time, there’s even a Great Duck Race.A rather large collection of rubber duckies will be released into the pond at Coldbrook Park at 1 p.m.on Oct.1.and they’ll bob downstream. There’s no word on what the winner gets. The duck festival has a complicated history.Launched years ago by a promoter with a $600,000 budget, it was billed as an international event that tried to build on the European fascination with duck.It was too successful.“It was a huge, huge, huge event. You couldn’t move [in the streets of Knowl-ton|.There was a lot of controversy, businesspeople and residents said there were just too many people.” So the fest moved to Bromont, but “was a flop,” says St-Julien.Another promoter took it up, but it eventually petered out.“Two years ago, there wasn’t a festival, there was just a little, local event.” The local chamber of commerce got involved, and in 2005 the Duck Festival, or Canard en Fete, relaunched. They had zero budget, and Brome Lake Ducks donated printing and a handful of other publicity-related costs and services.“It was a beautiful success,” says St-Julien, who’s looking forward to having the ever-bigger crowds appreciate how much more work has gone into organizing the event this year. The town of Knowlton is also donating services, from security help, to toilets to garbage cans. And there’s sponsorship from such businesses as Brome Lake Ducks.Founded in 1912, it markets some 2.2 million Peking ducks a year, shipping them to Canada, the United States, Japan, Mexico and Brazil. It has 160 employees.Organizers did pull in a few thousand dollars in donations and grants, but it’s still volunteer-run.St-Julien says that introducing people to the delights of duck is a delightfully important thing to do.“But the ultimate goal," she says, “is to have people get to know this village, the boutiques, the restaurants, the hotel keepers. The farm’s fame is being used to grab people’s interest, to come and get to know us.” For more information, check out www.knowltonquebec.ca or call 450-242-2870.Canard fest promises fun and food The Great Duck Race is on!
