The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome-Missisquoi Songs for Ksenia Waving the flag on Canada Day PHILIP A GODIN/CORRESPONDENT Seven-year-old Ksenia Evenchenko enjoys a traditional Canadian roasted marshmallow treat in the Townships while rebuilding her immune system that has been weakened by exposure to Chernobyl's nuclear fallout.CAROLINE KEHNE/RECORD CORRESPONDENT Festivities officially got underway for the Canada Day celebrations with a flag raising ceremony in Cowansville at the beach Monday.Shown raising the maple leaf are the Colour guard from Cowansville Royal Canadian Legion and Massey Vanier's Air Cadets.Different events went on all day long. For Lac Brome festivities, see Page 8.By Philip A.Godin Record Correspondent Cowansville When seven-year-old Ksenia Evenchenco stepped off the long flight that carried her from her home in the former Soviet Union Republic of Byelorussia to Quebec, it was nothing less than the realization of a dream come true. Finally, she had arrived in Canada, and would have a short but life-sustaining respite from the continual radiation that she has lived in since birth. That was June 18, and the young girl whose frail body has suffered the daily ravages of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident was to finally have her day sheltered from the now lethal environment in which she is condemned to live.Evenchenco is one of a diminishing number of children who travel to private homes in Canada and around the globe. This summer, 15 children will be housed in Eastern Quebec alone, from Huntingdon to Quebec City, through Granby, Racine, Sherbrooke, Acton Vale, Valcourt and Cowansville.Billeted by volunteers, they often offer the only hope these children have of a partial recovery. The idea behind the displacement is to interrupt the unrelenting exposure to radioactive fallout — to provide a 42-day respite so their immune system has a chance to rebuild itself.According to Denis Dumouchel and Marie Brouillette, one of several families who have offered their home to these children for the requisite six weeks, sheltering a child from immi- nent danger seemed only natural.“It will give Ksenia a chance to get away from the radiation that has contaminated her family’s home,” said the couple “It’s everywhere, in the soil where they live and grow their food, even the water they drink and wash in, everywhere!” Nearly one million residents of Byelorussia and neighbouring Ukraine are constantly exposed to radiation that permeates their lives and causes a multitude of medical problems, not the least of which is the annihilation of the body’s immune system.Because of the area’s predominantly northern winds, most of the radioactive materials that escaped the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl ended up in Byelorussia, just a few miles away.Children are among the most affected by the constant exposure.According to studies, they suffer nosebleeds, fatigue, recurring headaches, skin afflictions and a 20 to 30 times greater rate of developing cancer.See Ksenia, Page 4 Brunch ttJ Reservations Sunday sffVMtPt UMrfAtt weldemTheatre Membre ASBQ Certifié per 5ÂÉ Complete insurance CLIMATISEE Open Mon-Sat 8 am-6 pm r 3 Brome Lake Masons distribute $10,000 Recipients include medical and wellness organizations, wellnesss groups and more By Philip A.Godin Record Correspondent Knowlton The Brome Lake Masonic Lodge 35 and the Masonic Foundation of Quebec awarded over $10,000 in donations to various organizations and individuals last week, all part of their yearly efforts aimed at supporting local initiatives.“It gives us great pleasure to give this tangible support to these benevolent groups, and the very dedicated individuals whose hard work makes such an enormous difference in the lives of many adults and children in our community” said Worshipful Master Neil Albers at the ceremony held in Knowlton on June 25.This year’s recipients included medical and wellness organizations, performing arts groups, a school breakfast and Christmas gift program, a summer Camp, as well as children’s organizations. Also prominent were four scholarships awarded to deserving local students.Brome Village resident John Page, 17, whose constant above excellent Grade 11 results have already earned him admission into the Lennoxville campus of Champlain College in September, was on hand to receive his fourth scholarship.“I was really happy to get this bursary.I have already received the District of Bedford Masonic scholarship, the Dale Corey memori- al scholarship and the awards general fund scholarship from Massey Vanier (High School),” said Page, who also had his mind set on how he planned to use the money.“I’ll spend it on books.Definitely for books, because the first year Liberal Arts program at Champlain will cost about $600.” Page, who plans to apply to the McGill Law faculty after finishing his college degree, commented that he may have been in some way predestined for a career in pleading litigation.“My mom always said that 1 could argue my point using logic, regardless of the situation,” he said.It is this very type of logic that may explain his preference in the type of law he intends to practice.“I want to be a prosecuting attorney because I’d rather be free to do what’s I feel is right. To me the main difference between prosecution and defence attorneys is that defence attorneys often have to do things that go against their own morals,” added Page.Anyone interested in more information on the Masonic movement or their funding of social activities can call Les Hastie Wednesday, July 3, 2002 Brome County News Citizen Advocacy launches fundraising appeal Comm uni ty group searches for funds as demands increase By Murielle Parkes Record Correspondent Mansonville The launching of a $25,000 fundraising appeal by Citizen Advocacy (CA) was recently announced by the chairperson and vicechair of this year’s financial campaign committee — Martine Blanchet and Barbara Taylor. The community organization has three separate accreditations from the Régie régionale de la santé et des services sociaux de TEstrie (regional health and social services authority).Recognized as a Maintien-à-domi-cile organization (helping seniors live at home), a volunteer bureau, and a “maison des jeunes” or youth centre, CA offers more than 30 different programs and services in the areas of health and social services, protection, education, and other quality-of-life issues. While largely supported by the provincial government, certain programs — notably those for youth — are especially underfunded and must be auto-financed.Youth programs are significant. In recent years, up to 120 young people, ranging from five-year-olds to teenagers, have been annually enrolled in one or more of CA’s weekly youth programs. In addition, the nonprofit group regularly sponsors dances, coffee houses, variety shows and dance-theatre presentations as part of its overall design to give youth an alternative to drugs and alcohol. In April, the CA youth director acquired a long-awaited assistant, one who has been with CA youth groups — girl’s group, SADD and dance theatre — since she was five, and is now on staff as a qualified social service worker. The non-profit body first opened its doors in Magog in 1982, initially as an advocacy service for handicapped persons and other “people who need people.” In 1984, it moved to Mansonville where it broadened its mandate to include a myriad of other services — notably for youth, seniors, and for others needing help to realize their potential. These include intellectually challenged folks who benefit from programs organized by CA’s Ken Jones Centre.CA’s main clientele comes from the Potton and East Bolton areas. It is receives more requests, however, from adjacent communities — Eastman, St-Étienne-de-Bolton and Stuke-ly — especially for volunteer drivers and in times of crisis. When a young family was recently burned out, it was CA they first called for help, explained Alison Hannan, executive director of the organization.“In this territory, we are the designated link with the Red Cross,” said Hannan.“We can arrange for emergency food, clothes, and shelter. We also help people unravel legal docu- Since 1948 ppc spreading service CALCIC AND DOLOMITIC AGLIME Also available: Truck with flottation tires or Tractor hauled CA also operates an emergency food bank, and lends out wheel chairs, walkers and other orthopaedic equipment in times of a temporary disability or illness.CA’s automated self-service blood-pressure monitor, located at the Mansonville town hall, is freely available to any adult. The demand for other services continues, added Hannan.CA sincerely needs the public’s assistance, say Blanchet and Taylor. They cite a four-point mission state- ment which includes: helping youth develop in a healthy environment; assisting seniors to preserve their autonomy and maintain their enjoyment of life; facilitating the social integration of handicapped persons; and offering support, respite and assistance to individuals and families in need.A campaign newsletter is being sent to every household in each of the applicable municipalities.Donations are tax deductible and can be made directly at the office (314 rue Principale) or through the mail at P.O.Box 369, Mansonville, Qc, JOE 1X0.Information: (450) 292-3114.Ksenia: Cont’d from Page 1 The program which will bring Evenchenco and other children to Quebec this year depends completely on the benevolence of the foster families’ generosity — no financial assistance is provided from either governments or agencies. Thus the responsibility for the child’s airfare, living, medical and dental expenses as well as any clothing and other personal purchases falls upon the foster families.“This has led us to approach many people for help, which we are very happy to be receiving.” added Dumouchel. In fact the community has been very supportive.A local shoe store has offered free footwear, while a dentist and a doctor will be providing their services without charge.Donations have also come in from local businesses and individuals, as well as from a fundraiser tea held by a nearby Women’s institute. The Piece de resistance in all of this benevolence will be a benefit cello concert on Saturday, July 8, 2 p.m.at the Bishop Stewart Memorial Church located at 5 Garagona St.in Frelighsburg.Under the direction of Orchestre Symphonique de la Mon-térégie cellist Iona Corber, a group of students will play excerpts from Bach, Shubert and Handel.Admission is $10 at La librairie de Cowansville or at the door.An entertaining evening, the proceeds of which will of course go towards supporting the Dumouchels.“She arrived here with an empty suitcase. Our plan is to send her home with a full one,” said Denis.Anyone interested in more information concerning Evenchenco, the billeting program or the benefit concert can reach Denis Dumouchel or Marie Brouillette at 450-263-3443, or visit www.tchernobyl.qc.ca/ksenia Brome County 88 Lakeside, Knowlton, Quebec JOE 1V0 Tel.: (450) 242-1188 / Fax: (450) 243-5155 Published weekly by 1195 Galt Street East, Sherbrooke J1G 1Y7 fax: (819) 821-3179 E-mail: newsroom@sheibrookerecord.com website: www.sherbrookerecord.com Record SUBSCRIPTIONS AVAILABLE ONLY $33.36 tax included Canadian (450) 242-1188 La Grande Virée Artistique Keep an eye open! Local entrepreneur running horse camp at 22 Sutton resident teaching children and adults alike By Kate Shingler Sutton Unlike most 22-year-olds who spend the summer recuperating and preparing for the coming academic year, Anna Bellavance is embarking on her busiest season. The Sutton resident, who has been running her own equestrian camp for the last five years, is currently engaged in training purebred Morgan horses, while also teaching adults and kids alike how to ride safely and with the utmost respect for the animals.A recent graduate of Bishops University, Bellavance will begin a 14-month Master’s program in International Management at the University of Sherbrooke in the fall, before completing the degree in Poitiers, France next year.Horses will remain an important part of her life, she explains, regardless of travel or study.“I’ve been passionate about horses for a long time. They give humans a combination of honesty, trust and energy,” Bellavance says between sips of water on her lunch hour at Meldon Stables, where she teaches and runs trail rides daily.“I want to share my experience with kids. It’s very refreshing to come and be with the horses, it’s a kind of escape.” The summer day camp runs through August, for children five to 16 years old.Using an English-style saddle, students spend time in the ring where they gradually build their skills and comfort-level, learning to walk, trot and canter.A proponent of a more holistic kind of horseback riding experience, Bellavance encourages riders to care for the horses, brushing, feeding and preparing them before taking to the saddle.“I consider myself serious about teaching,” she admits.“I really take the time and energy to get students to be comfortable with horses from the ground up, I feel it is important.” A recent winner of two Quebec Reserve Grand Championships, some of Bellavance’s students have also begun competing in local shows. One student was awarded third and fourth place at an Ayer’s Cliff meet last month. With a maximum of only six campers per session, Bellavance says her teaching style will remain intimate.“I want to keep it exclusive, small and personal,” she adds.“I want to have contact with the students at all times.” For more information on the Sutton summer day camp, call 450-538-3387, or visit the Web site kiosk, manned for 30 hours per week by Bromont resident Kyle Downing, opened Friday on Lakeside Street in front of Coldbrook Park.Sponsored by a local merchants association, the kiosk will offer travellers advice on where to eat, shop and sightsee.Downing, 17, is in the process of familiarizing himself with nearby restaurant menus and studying maps.“People ask me which restaurants to go to or what is the most ‘touristy’ thing to do in Knowlton,” says the recent Massey-Vanier graduate, adding that though Knowlton is renown for its unique boutiques he also suggests taking in the The Brome County Historical Society museum for an alternate perspective.Association president Heather Heath hopes the information booth, will enhance the village’s welcoming feeling.“We felt it was important to have [the kiosk] in Knowlton,” she said.'/N KATE SHINGLER Anna Bellavance (centre) works with students Celia Priebe, 14, Vincent Chouinard, 9, and Simon Chouinard, 8, at the Meldon Stables Friday.Tour is located in Saint-Armand’s stately former train station, which is also the home of the town’s post office.Supporters from Saint-Armand, Philips-burg, Bedford and Pigeon Hill turned out for a wine and cheese opening, and to sample the library’s collection, which was stocked with used books from individual donations, library discards and sales collected by director Normand Paquin.Paquin has personally selected the contents of the collection, compiling a selection of works of non-fiction and fiction in French, English and other languages. The remaining books will be sold to pay the library’s operating expenses. The three CIC-sponsored libraries, which also include Stanbridge Station’s Maison du Livre and Philipsburg’s Mis-sisquoi Public library, offer approximately 10,000 volumes for lending or reference and are entirely privately funded.like its predecessors, la Biblio-Gare will host special events such as free lectures, concerts and board game nights. The C3C is a non-profit
