M C.Shumiatcher of Regina was heard to say from the audience of about 3Ô0 lawyers The audience included External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp and former Exchequer Court President J T Thorson On a panel leading discussion were Dr Sabourin.Alex J.Corry.former principal of Queen’s University and now visiting professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, and Dean Gerald V.LaForest of the faculty of law at the University of Alberta.Edmonton Chairman of the panel was Maxwell Cohen, former law dean at McGill University.Montreal, and another leading figure in the constitutional debate of recent years.Dr Sabourin ignored the Shumiatcher interjection or didn t hear it.Later, after the panelists spoke.Dr Shumiatcher rose from the floor to question the Ottawa professor’s contention The Regina lawyer said it was “the height of parochalism to suggest that federal powers over foreign affairs, immigration and broadcasting be divided “You aren't capable of dia- logue with tolerance.’ Dr Sabourin shot back angrily Remarks about parochialism had no place in a discussion in which there was mutual respect, he said He told Dr Schumiatcher to “read what has been written” about the constitution, including papers he had done for the royal commission on biculturalism and bilingualism Dean Cohen said use of the word parochial had perhaps been unfortunate It was impossible to associate the word parochial with the aspirations of a deeply-rooted people Thousands attend Brome Fair is a big hit WEST BROME — (DM) — Perfect weather and sunny skies brought a spirited crowd of thousands to the Brome County Fair this Labor Day weekend An eager audience filled the grandstand to watch the Gastom Circus Acts perform between harness races and assorted parades The midway, with its rides and exhibits, was bustling with activity.Judging in most departments was completed by Sunday.Parades of the various live stock were held Sunday and Monday afternoon. In the Dairy Holstein division, the Beervern Farm (John Beerwort and Sons» of Brome was awarded top prizes for the Premier Breeder and Reserve Female The Ma ska Farm (Gerard Audet) of St.Cesaire had the Premier Exhibitor.Champion Female and Reserve Male Crackholm Holsteins r Sabourin’s suggestion that the provinces should have control over immigration The delegate said that if Que bee’s education policy in St.Leonard, a ‘’ontreal suburb where English language schooling has been r» .used support is any indication i what the province would do th immigration.then God save Canada from that day.” Mr Thorson another speaker from the floor, said the new fed eral water bill may be an at tempt to return to a flexible view of jurisdiction under the British North America Act He hoped that the Supreme Court of Canada, if the bill’s va lidity is tested, will uphold it and thus reverse the inflexible trend set 50 years ago by a court decision in the constitutional area The jurist also said he hopes federal spending power won’t be reduced This had been a means of flexible adjustment in Canada All social welfare programs had been made possible through federal spending power Mr Thorson said he was alarmed last winter when Prime Minister Trudeau seemed willing to negotiate spending power at Quebec’s suggestion during the constitutional conference Your Horoscope See what eac h day holds in store lor you' Starting today in the Record Jeane Dixon, noted astrologer, begins her daily horoscope to help each Inside Births, deaths Townships Classified Comics Editorials TODAY S CHUCKLE wife in hot aid I individual meet the* complexities ol daily life* and realize his full potential. He* sure* to read Your Horoscope on page* 2.today Financial 7 Sports 10 Television ?Women A — Plumbing ad "We help you keep your water!" How can I make this hand in the case of declarers, and How can I heat this hand in the case of defenders When South looks over dummy, he visualizes a sim pie plan of campaign He will go after the club suit when he gets an opportunity Even if he loses the club finesse, he will wind up losing one club, one spade and one diamond Of course, there are com plications if the club finesse works the first time it is tried, but in that case South can refuse to take it a sec ond time and just lose two spades and a diamond All in all, the prospects look good to South They also look pretty bad to West He looks over dummy and does not care for what he sees He asks him self the question, “How can I beat this contract?” Then he sees two possibilities. The first is to find his partner with the king and two small spades In that case, he can lead his deuce of spades and collect three fast spade tricks The other possibility is to find his partner with the king of clubs and either the queen or 10 of spades. In this case, also, a spade lead is indicated Therefore, West leads his deuce of spades and risks the loss of an overtrick or so in case South holds both black kings. The lead settles South’s hash East’s 10 of spades knocks out one of.South’s honors.Later on.East ‘gets in with the king of clubs and gives hi .partner two ade tricks (Newspaper Enterprise Assn ) TELEVISION VIEWING South Ayer s Cliff Fair the 124th is over It was a good fair l nfortunately Sherbrooke Fair clashed with Ayers Cliff as it did with Cookshire and Richmond was obliged to have their s in the spring so there were no beef cattle exhibits at Ayer s Cliff but there were fine dair\ herds According to poultry judge E T Taylor of Lennox ville the poultry exhibits were one of the best quality birds to be seen and one the best shows in many years Mr Taylor said this was largely due to the hard work of the committee of Burton Mosner Frank Kyffin and others The Horticultural building was up to its usual high standards of beautiful flowers, abundance of vegetable and farm produce maple products and the cooking was an excellent display It is most encouraging to the people in charge to note teenagers are entering into the competition with the adults Congratulations go to Miss Linda Vance an Ayer’s Cliff teenager who led in points for cooking and was winner of the $5 00 Cadbury special prize for chocolate cake Saturday at four o'clock after the fair was over for this building, the Directors held a food sale of their own specialities and many items on exhibit which were donated and brought in a satisfactory sum of money to the Horticulture treasury The Stanstead County Women's Institute did a rushing business all three days of the fair in the tea room and their sales table in the main building Mr and Mrs Jack Couture of Ayer’s Cliff are certainly to be commended on operations of the dining hall the three days, they took this over at the last minute following the sudden death of Mr Simard of Magog who had made arrangements to operate the dining hall Good meals too The Crazy Elmer show was excellent although the attendance that evening on the grandstand was not as high as hoped for by the directors The Tom Bishop Rodeo and Wild W’est Show on Friday and Saturday evenings was largely attended and enjoyed by everyone, with excellent showmanship Many of our local horse people received valuable instruction on Saturday afternoon from the Bishop's cowboys concerning points of showmanship The Coaticook majorettes and band added color ar.d music to the fair, and an additional attraction on Saturday afternoon was the music played by approximately 100 young students of Camp Massawippi Musicale, spending two weeks at the Crippled Children s Camp at Ayer’s Cliff The students are from Montreal and areas The fine classical music, enjoyed by all who heard it included selections from The King and I.and others. This was the young people’s contribution to the fair, the Directors granted them free admission to the grounds The displays in the Women's Work section was of excellent quality, with numerous items of knitting in every section Children's work was also in good numbers and included arts and crafts The fair is supported by a large number of business and manufactures in the Townships and because of this several of the exhibitors received special prizes Mrs Lillian McFaul.Aver s Cliff and Miss Arlene Probyn of Stanstead placed first and second in the Window box competition offered by the Horticultural Societv There were several lesser prizes given to winner in the same competition Ayer’s Cliff Fair is fast becoming known for its exhibits of some of the finest horses in several Counties and this year saw perhaps a record This is largely because of the hard work of the Horse Committee headed by Cohn Lax Turner Hunter Stuart Cass.J Voisard and others Another feature of this fair is its friendliness, a place where many meet only once a year at Fair time, they chat and reminiscence of the good old days and compare changes, and they always come back another year if at all possible Special mention was given to Berto Bachelder of Beebe who is 92 years of age.and has missed only about six fairs in his life.Percy Whitcomb, of Hatley, who because of frail health comes and sits in the car where friends say Hello and chat awhile It is because of the hard work of men such as these in days gone by mat me t air is still in operation Among the distinguished guests were George Vaillancourt.MNA.H Latulippe MP Presidents of some of the Townships Fairs, and many others from near and far.all of whom extended congratulations to the Directors of the fair board Mansonville Dr and Mrs James Mitchell and family.Toronto, are guests of Mr and Mrs H Steinbach and
