The Same The question of fluoridation of water has become an active issue all over Canada, although we must admit that in Sherbrooke the more elementary problem of filtration still remains to be dealt with to assure the inhabitants of a supply of good water. But like all new discoveries, fluoridation has aroused fears in the minds of the timorous and the uneducated. It is only a few years ago that newspapers of this country were beseiged by timorous souls who feared the dangers of pasteurized milk and Sherbrooke aldermen less than two years ago were faced with an active campaign against the by-law to compel the pasteurization of all milk sold within the city limits. The ridiculous crusade against Old Story chlorination' of Vancouver’s water supply — in the face of all scientific opinion — was only a brief decade ago.And who can forget the frantic letters against toxoid to prevent diphtheria. In earlier days there were antivaccination riots — but in spite of all, truth prevails in the long run.Vaccination conquered smallpox, chlorination conquered typhoid.Toxiod against diphtheria has reduced that disease almost to the vanishing point and pasteurization of, milk has saved the lives of thousands of children. In the current campaign waged by the fearful and the ill-balanced, history is repeating itself.Ignorance, selfishness and fanaticism cannot in the long run prevail. The Good Forty years ago folks boiled coffee and settled it with an egg; the only reds known were red flannels; and a boy didn’t think he had to have a vehicle to pursue happiness.People were more interested in the contentment of each other than they were in that of cows; ladies rode side-saddle and when a preacher said a truth, the people said “Amen.” A candidate had to be economy-minded to get elected to office; neighbors asked about your family and meant it; and when a man dress- Old Days ed for the evening he put on a nightshirt.Folks used toothpicks and were still polite; and neighbors got fresh liver at hog-killing time. Two or three people could meet without passing the hat; parents were the only baby-sitters; and men worked for an honest living without wishing for one.A man’s word was as good as his bond; Rip Van Wjnkle slept for 20 years and no one asked him to endorse a mattress, and men made the same wife do a life-time.The Price Of Progress We save time and labor by all our modern devices — and then we proceed to fill up the time so saved by plunging into a feverish whirlpool of other activities so that the leisure we ought to have disappears. We can do so many things faster and more easily that speed and ease become the key words of our lives. We do not read books and magazines — we read digests. We do not walk, we go in a car.We do not plough barefoot behind a team of horses,, we use a tractor. The whole pattern is of one piece, typified by speed in place of leisure, facility in place of thoroughness, the pavement in place of the good earth.A certain sense of achiex-ement involved in overcoming difficulty breeds a mental, emotional and spiritual health which is sadly lacking in these days of easy accomplishment and can only be restored on the land and close to nature. This And That.Doctors in Argentina are on strike in protest against the death of one of their profession in mysterious circumstances while in police custody. This is tjje latest evidence that the Peron dictatorial regime is cracking up — strikes, protests, armed revolt, rumors, government changes, all seem part of a new and dramatic picture. In his reshuffled Alberta cabinet, Mr.Manning is premier, attorney-general and minister of mines.Disposal of his spare time should not be a serious problem.Water doesn’t burn.Yet forest forest fires destroy fishing as surely as they waste timber and ruin vacation haunts.Forestry and fishing are closely allied. What's Missing: Answer to (A5) —West Germany’s high-powered economic boom is colliding head-on with an acute labor shortage.Just as the country prepares to put men under arms in a new army, the reserves of labor for | its expanding industries have been practically exhausted.Full employment exists in the two main industrial states of North Rhine-Westphalia—home of the Ruhr—and Baden-Wuerttemberg.Julius Scheubel, president of the federal employment office, says.“German labor market conditions will almost unavoidably resemble those in Britain within a very short time.” Employment has soared to an all-time high of more than 17,-000,000 persons or 1,000,000 more than a year ago.Unemployment has dropped to the lowest point since the drastic currency reform in 1948.The number of registered jobless now stands at 566,000, compared with 934,000 a year ago.But only 272,000 of the unemployed are men and many of them are not fully employable.Within the last month the number of jobless dropped by 83,000.Industry leaders fear the severe shortage of skilled workers will put a roadblock in the way of the production increases needed to supply f-erman's growing export THIRTY YEARS AGO From the Chamber of Commerce and Industry reports that some employers are raiding the labor ranks of other industries by offering higher wages and better working conditions. The metal industries especially are sailors and airmen.Bygone Days TWENTY YEARS AGO From the Record of Monday, August 12, 1935.Sam Gobeil, present sitting member, was the unanimous choice of Compton County Conservative Convention at EASIER THAN REAL PLAY Perhaps North and South should have bid up to five clubs ir.today's hand, but this would have been a very lucky contract On the basis of their cards, they should have stopped at a comfortable part-score contract. When the hand was actually played, however, South made game at no-trump and it was very hard to blame anybody for tne defensive error that gave him the game.West opened the king of spades, and South held off until the third round of the suit, discarding two small diamonds from the dummy on the second and third spades.South next led a low club and was glad to cover West's eight with dummy’s nine of clubs, thus making sure that East would have to win the trick. Thanks to the hold-up.East w'as out of spades. After some fear and trembling, East returned a low diamond, and West’s jack.forced out dummy’s ace.South now ran the clubs. On the third club.West discarded a low diamond, while East was still following suit.On the- fourth chib.East had to discard first and was still uncertain as to which red king his partner held.Could East afford to unguard the queen of diamonds, or should he d;scard a heart? After mote fear and trembling, East discarded a heart.South knew the situation, of course, and decided to help the situation along by discarding a heart likewise. This discard fostered the impression that declarer had no interest in the heart suit.West likewise knew the situation and hoped to warn his part- others were directing the recent religious restrictions, today broke his self-imposed silence to assure his cheering adherents
