# I NCA Sefnc«( Inc.1 ~ - WSm Sure Road To For a good while now the Russian Communist leaders have been talking invitingly of renewing the so-called “popular front’’ or coalition of leftist parties.This tactic had a certain success in the late 19 30 s, especially in France.But the non - Communist leftists have learned something since then.The Socialists, powerful today in many European lands, understand well what would be involved in any cooperation with Moscow.The Council of the Socialist International, meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, bluntly rejected the “popular front’’ idea.It set up a minimum precondition for cooperation with Moscow which the Kremlin obviously could never accept — the abolition of the Communist party dictatorship.The Socialists know that the Communist objective is always final conquest of the free nations.A united front to them is just one more way of promoting that end.At the earliest opportunity, in the event such a front took over a government, the Communists would seize full power if they could.Thereafter the Socialists would get Oblivion nothing.Indeed, they might suffer a worse fate than a country’s conservatives.Communists view the Socialist philosophy as too closely competitive with their own.By our standards Socialists may be “radicals,” but as seen from the left they are relatively moderate.They want no part of dictatorship or other Red extremism.Often the Socialist parties of Europe have taken policy positions which we regard as unsound and perhaps unwittingly serving the Communist aims.1 hey may indeed be shortsighted at times in their judgment of Western needs.But in most cases the differences are honest, and they lie within the framework of Western freedom.Cooperation with the Kremlin does not.Whatever the Socialists may desire that differs from the goals of more conservative parties, they know the enemy well enough not to embark on a course of collaboration that could lead to slow suicide for the Socialist movement.Embracing Moscow is like cuddling up to a cobra.A Calculated Gamble The British government has seen fit to take an unusually rubs His snout on the wire above — perchance To prove he can, but more like — To impress his brand new cubs.Victoria Park in summer Is a magic world where the family goes To play together The children splash in the crowded pool Their enjoyment of it, vociferous and loud While mother with a picnic hamper, wonders whether She's brought enough food to feed the crowd And father keeps in tow The little ones staring solemnly At a monkey Or trying to snatch a feather From a peacock’s gorgeous fan.— Even the animals enjoy the summer They can watch the play-antics of a man! profitable hobby.It is a most up-| to-date ranch, kept: scrupulously ; clean.Mr.Seager first started his ! hobby at Lachine in 1946 so he is an old hand at the work and his past, experience is paying off now.He is a member of the National Chinchilla Breeders of Canada and has many registered animals.He estimates the cost of feeding each animal at $3 a year.The ! food consists of a hay, pablum !and grain mixture, often with a raisin, prune or piece of apple j as a tidbit, and a few rabbit pel-| lets each day.The chinchilla is a very flea» (animal, each day taking a bath in fuller's earth, in which they ‘roll, and this servtvs to keep their fur clean and free flowing.These little animals are not known to be infested with either fleas or lice.Mr.Seager is very fond of his chinchillas and has several which seem to be his special pets.Some of his most valuable animals are nine years old.Litters usually consist of three or four kits, but on two occasions Mr.Seager’s chinchillas have produced litters of six, a very rare occurrence.W’hen born, the kits have their eyes open, a full set of teeth and are fully furred.They can run around the pen within a few hours.Their weight at birth is only one and one-half to two ounces.It is most interesting to watch Mr.Seager with these little animals, which sleep practically all through the day and scamper about at night.He is always pleased to have visitors, showing them around the ranch, as well as answering numerous questions.COOKSHIRE— Recent guests of Mrs.John i Cloutier and Lena were Mrs.Hannah Morrow and Mr.and Mrs.Clarence Barter, of Bury.Miss Helen Robidas, of Scots-town, spent the wmek-end with Mr.and Mrs.Leon DesRuisseaux.Mrs.J.E.Vermette has returned home from the hospital.Recent week-end guests of Mrs.V.Cook were Miss Lucy Weston and Mr.Bruce Gilbert, of Sherbrooke.The members and friends of the B.I.C.Home and School Association are reminded of the meeting which will be held in the Cookshire High School, Thursday, March 22, at 8 p.m.The guest speaker will be Mr.Lyman Tompkins, of Bishop’s University, who will speak of the work of this university.GORE- Officers Elected Al W.I.Meeting Gore.— The annual meeting of the Gore W.I.vas held at the home of Mrs.F.J.Nixon.Mrs.M.H.Hughes, president, was in the chair and opened the meeting in the usual manner.All responded to the roll call by the payment of dues.It was decided that the usual prizes would be given at the Richmond County Fair and S25 was voted to the Cecil Memorial Home.It was reported that $35 had been realized from the sale of cards during the year, and S5.59 from the birthday money project.The president gave a report of the county executive meeting recently held after which the various conveners gave their annual reports showing good work done in each department.The treasurer's report showed that $208.75 had been raised during the year.The election of officers results ed as follows; president, Mrs.S.A.Doyl»; first and second vice-presidents, Mrs.M.B.Codding-ton and Mrs, Percy Frazer; secretary, Mrs.M W.Carson; treasurer, Mrs.F.J.Nixon.Conveners: agriculture, Mrs.E.Vogelsanger; education, Mrs.J.1.Fallona; home economics, Mrs.F.J.Nixon; citizenship, Mrs.M.Griffith; welfare and health, Mrs.A.Abercrombie; publicity, Mrs.M.W.Carson.Mrs.Doyle then took the chair and presented Mrs.Hughes and Mrs.M.Griffith with prizes for perfect attendance.Mrs Fallona conducted a word-building contest which was won by Mrs.Stafford Husk.The meeting adjourned and supper was served by the losing team of the attendance contest, each winner also being presented with a corsage.The April meeting will be held at the home of Mrs.A.Dunn on the regular date.HISTORIC POST The original Norway House fort was built about 1800 near the northern enff of Lake Winnipeg.BlttiSO FOR A LASTING SHINE BIG SERVINGS IN EVERY 13 QT.BAG !NP?ÂTrEH ^MJ?rUS WIU0W PATTERN CUP OR SAUCER tumEBÎECrH,e:3ea0=Th sBAGNDCaRYQSTTABLAGCLEAR Æ DUDSWELL JUNCTION— HUNTINGVILLE- 1 Friends of Mr.E.Aldrich will regret to learn that he is a pa-1 tient in the Sherbrooke Hospital.I Mr.and Mrs.Ross Hunting were guests on Saturday, at thej Roberts-Crawford wedding which ; took place at the Queen Mary Rd.United Church in Hampstead.Mrs.Albert Willard has returned to her home after spending OUNHAM— several days with Mr.and Mrs.Frank Anderson and family, at Stanstead.pgsT ’ ‘ill.¦¦ ^ '¦ wonderful happens when you SOFTUGHT your home! Hi This fact would automatically make Godhue a permanent member of the team and ineligible for a release.Parker in signing the card became the 19th player.With this ev.de^m-e the q \\ h,A.had no other alternative but to uphold the Asbestos P'0tTn order to try to settle the matter in the best interests of hockev the Q.A.H.A.offered to delay the date upon which the League must declare its champion, in order to permit a two came total-point series between Asbestos and Windsor Mills for the semifinal title.Asbestos refused to entertain this offer as they felt that such a series might result in injury to some spectators due to the heated feeling of the Citizens n both Towns.The Q A H A.feels badly that such a protest has been made so late in the season and that both parties could not have agreed upon the proposed compromise.Had the protest been made earlier in the season all (lie games in which Parker participated would have been lost In (he Windsor Mills Club However as all the teams participate in the League playoffs, the Windsor Mills Club would still have had the chance to win the title.Teams join the Q.A.H.A.for protection.When a rule is broken certain penalties must be imposed and although it feels lhat games should be won or lost on the ice and not in the Committee room nevertheless, when a protest is forwarded it is heard and if a compromise cannot be effected the prescribed penalty must be imposed. .r K is (he duty of each team Manager to know Hie status of bis plavers.Had this been done this mistake could have been avoided and the Windsor Mills Club could still be a contender (he Hmnwiffi ^^«'¦7;»“ÏJrHET,ER1!, Vice-President, Q.A.H.A.__ _ .|— - .I Ayer's Cliff Boxers Hank Greenberg Enter Golden Gloves Has New Gimmick To Speed Games E.T.MOSQUITO CHAMPIONS — The above photo shows the Stanstead Black Hawks winners of the annual playdowns held at the Border Arena.They blanked the Sherbrooke North Ward Blues 3-0 in the sudden-death tilt.In the front, left to right, Peter Labrecque, I).Goodsell, Y.Gilbert, R.Badger and A.La vallee.Standing, same order, H.Goudreau, L.Webb, J.Bushnell, Hector Channel!, S.Slack, CURLING RE SUL TS I.ENNOXVILLE CURLING CLUB BONSPIEL I,ester Dezan and Pat Grenon, nf Ayer's Cliff will make their boxing debuts in Ihc Golden Gloves tournament in Montreal tomorrow night.Both these boys are entered in the 147 pound novice class and are rated as good prospects.For the pats two months, Dezan and Grenon have been working out in the Ayer's Cliff High School.Burke Emery, popular Sherbrooke boxer, has been teaching the boys the fundamentals nf boxing and has his two charges in top condition.Dezan and Grenon are being sponsored by Ivan Dugre, well-known Sherbrooke sportsman.Tucson.Ariz.—(AP)— Hank Greenberg came up with another gimmick today in an effort to speed up baseball games.The general manager of Cleveland Indians said he will use the football stop clock on the centre Held score board at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland to “time” the pilchcrs.Under baseball rules a pitch er must make his delivery within 20 seconds after he steps on the rubber if the bases are empty.Earlier in the week, Greenberg disclosed plans to put $100 in a players’ kitty every1 limb Ihc Tribe wins a game in less than two hours.NICHOL I.e nn.D.Gray .» Border W.Dumoulin 6 Lenn.H.Nichol - 5 Danville L.Galhshore . 5 Sherb.f.Joslin .7 Magog f.Connor .5 T.enn.K.Lane .11 Lenn.R.Mooney 7 Windsor H.Ross .1b Lenn.N.Hunting . 7 Sherb.W.Hammond 10 TROPHY Rich, J.Barrington Sherb.S.Cross .Sherb.G.Armitage .Border G.Conway .Sherb.B.Millar .Sherb.G Katadotis Sherb.R.Badger 5 Windsor Robitallle .4 Sherb.O.Goyettc .3 Magog E Pilkington 10 Lenn.J.Jordan .0 Provincial School Cage Crowns At Stake Saturday;
