regulaf monthly meeting held Wednesday, April 13.If they don't make a start this year it won't be caused by lack of interest aroused.Her excellent talk giving do's and don'ts from their experience was well received.Mrs.McIntosh said plans for the third year were practically completed and they found the interest and effectiveness growing.They were able to obtain use of school grounds with playground equipment and school basement for rainy days.The playgrounds opens the middle of July and the first year planned to run for a month but was so successful they extended it another week.The second year the time was extended to six weeks and this year they have a five-week j timetable scheduled.They have a registration of 60 with average attendance of 40 -— which by playground statistics is excellent, they are told.Bedford is a small town of 2,500 [population, 20 per com English-speaking.Regarding financing the project Mrs.McIntosh said the fathers I raised $200 the first year and with $2 family memberships they kept out of the red.The second year they reduced membership to $1 and it is remaining ' that this year.A well-planned timetable is a must to a successful playground | and supervisors with the know-how in charge.Mrs.McIntosh recommends if possible branches send supervisor to Montreal lo take the ten days’ [course given early in June to all island playground supervisors and I lo write Mr.H.C.Ryan of McGill j University, Dept, of Athletics, for information.The playground is divided into j three age groups—3 to 5 year olds, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12.Bedford has learned through experience it is advisable to have a supervisor for each group with volunteer mothers to help.They have a list of 50 mothers who take regular mornings and are on call for extra service when emergencies arise.The hours of the playground are fiTim 9 to 12 and two afternoons for the 9 to 12 group when hikes, swimming parties and trips to places of interest are planned — usually ending with a weenie roast.The supervisor is paid $100 and high school students who work under j her are paid $2 a day.In Bedford the voluntary servic-' es of a ranking tennis player proved invaluable for a group of older children.Two hours a week ten-; nis instruction was available for those interested.A tournament at the end of the period was also in the plans.On the opening day a member of committee must be [present 1q take money and give each child a ribbon badge which has an appeal especially to the smaller children.1 greatly regret space forbids ! me giving the complete talk but ; perhaps Mrs.McIntosh is available [ as a speaker to go to your branch.I can assure you she has the knowhow for summer playground organization.oii^.vDRUOKE DAILY RECORD, SATURDAY.MAY 2.1953 are.Victims of leukemia, particular j ly those with chronic varieties, often can.be helped temporarily by blood transfusions, X-ray treatments over Ihc spleen, or by ecr-I lain kinds of arsenic preparations | taken by mouth.Other methods, j including ACTH and cortisone, are being studied, though treatment | of any kind is still far from sal-I isi'actory.ABNER By Al Copp a PEW DAS* AGO.this A A* A ?AAPP-V Li l ?¦Ott -SUT-SUOPEMIN - A MYSTCRIOOS JINX COME.OVILR IT.THE' ClARK CEOUD O' MINI SEEPED INTO th ROCKABOVE Mf WHAW it cain't SINCE THET DARK CEOUD SEEPED IN ŒVER MAH BAB VS -CRADLE-ITS ^ LI'L UNSTARTED LIST.BECAME.X-ULLO TROUBLE An MADE This CAVE INTO HAPPV LI'L HOME—AN*THE HAPPIEST THING 'BOUT IT is MAM UIN'N HAIN'T H ARSON LI'L ABNER AN DAISV MAE WKAREVER THEV IS — , 0>.A4 is,;
