[" Criminal negligence RCMP raid exposes 'still in St.Fortunat trial opens (See page 3) By RICHARD NUTBROWN (Record Stiff Reporter) Two men were arraigned before Justice of the Peace Jean F.Bilodeau last night at the Sherbrooke Courthouse on charges of operatng a still and be ng in possession of illegal liquor. In a daylight raid by 10 RCMP agents Tuesday at 3 30 p.m.Guy Gaboreault, 31, of St.P.erre de Napierville, and Rene Torbin, 29.address unknown, were arrested for operating a still in Range 7 of the municipality of St.Fortunat St.Fortunat is approximately 75 miles from Sherbrooke, outside of Disraeli. The two men were scheduled to appear before a Sessions Court judge this morning at 10.Officers of the RCMP who were at the scene of the raid said it was one of the biggest stlls found in some time The output of the illegal distillery was estimated at about 250 gallons of alcohol a day.At the t.me of the raid there was 54 boxes containing four gallons of illegal booze per box in an old barn which housed the still.Besides the illicit alcohol, quantités of yeast, sugar, oil’ acid and molasses were found as well as distilling coils, a huge boiler and many other articles RCMP agents who raided the still said that the alcohol was not too good for human consumption.Sm "RCMP" on Pago 7 Weather Variable cloudiness with a few brief flurries today and Friday.Continuing went into its third day of crisis today with the government still seeking a test of its authority to govern and the Opposition insisting that it has no right to stay in office.Wednesday, the second day of turmoil after defeat of the gov-ernment’s tax bill Monday night, was highlighted by a half-hour Commons session during which Prime Minister Pearson was blocked in a bid for immediate debate on a confidence motion. It was another day of uncertainty and high drama as former Conservative leader John Diefenbaker defied a ruling of the Speaker to charge that Parliament was being “throttled" and to raise the spectre of the 1956 pipeline debate.Today, the House was to meet at its regular 2:30 p.m.hour and almost anything was possible.Stanley Knowles, NDP rules expert, said a number of options are open to the government.“It’ll probably be a rowdy day,” he concluded One good possibility was that Mr.Pearson would seek another adjournment until Friday when debate on the confidence motion can legally begin—with or with out the unanimous consent of the House.Another was that the government might make another bid for unanimous consent to go ahead with the debate.Or it could try to open a previously-scheduled discussion on the constitution. But with the opposition in an angry mood, these possibilities seemed slim. And the debate itself, when it does start, promised to be a long one.Prime Minister Pearson told a late-afternoon press conference Tuesday that he would prefer adjournment today rather than allowing the debate to degenerate into a shambles with no business being done.“We’re not going to have that kind of 1956 pipeline situation,” he said.REMEMBER 1956 Echoes of the 1956 crisis hung over Parliament Hill throughout Tuesday although Mr.Pearson said it was the “height of parti san irresponsibility" to suggest the Commons had gone back to that pattern.Opposition members raised the charge on the grounds that t h e government’s confidence motion was, in the words of NDP Leader Douglas, an attempt to reimpose the five percent increase in income taxes defeated Monday on an 84-to-82 vote."It is a motion asking this House to turn back the clock,” he said.If the government had brought in a “straight” eonfi- Guessing is the game IT'S ALL IN THE WAY — About the only time you'll see Wednesday and held a pistol under her ear until the pilot detoured his craft and 109 persons to a landing in Cuba. There were six Canadians aboard.About five hours after the hijacking, Delta Air Line Flight 843 returned to Miami, leaving behind in Havana a young man who gave his name to the airline as “S.Wilson.” Havana Radio today identified him as a 29-year-old former St.Petersburg, Fla., man with a name that sounded like Lauren-zo Robe: ts.The broadcast moni- tored in Miami said the man asked for political asylum and that the Cuban government took the request under cons.derat on.The man boarded the Chica-go-Miami flight with 64 other persons at Tampa.Other passengers said he had been dr.nk-ng heavily.“He told us he didn't care who he k lied or how badly he shot up the plane,” said Joy Bleil, 28, of Elmwood Park, 111.Mrs.Bleil, the senior stewardess- was held in the cockp.t as a hostage until the giant, $8,-000,000 airliner was escorted into Cuba by four M.G fighters and touched down at Jose Marti arport.“He sa d he was facing a deith sentence for the hijack ng anyway,” said the pert brunette n a press conference by the crew at Miami International A.rport.In Havana earlier, speaking with an Associated Press reporter, Mrs.Bleil said: “I don’t know why he did this, but I can st 11 feel the cold th ng (the pis-oi) below my ear.” The plot, J.D.Gainey, 49, sa^ the ciew made no attempt to overpower the h jacker.“The man was all wrought up,” Gainey said.He was described as about 25, dressed in a sloppy manner, dark complexioned and claiming to be South American although he spoke w th no appar- ent accent At 3:37 p.m EST seven min- One of the favorite political guessing games these days is: Who holds the balance of power? Its popularity may be shortlived as the answer should be forthcoming when the House of Commons holds its critical vote on the motion of confidence the Pearson Government has presented to the House of Commons — a vote that could come tomorrow but more likely early next week, or, perhaps, never.Ground rules for the game are: Line up 130 Liberal Government supporters determined to keep the admin.stration in power against a combined opposition of 129 equal determined to oust the Government and place three Independents on the side-l.nes.The objective is to determine permutatons are inter-estng, to say the least.Should all three Independents vote with the Liberals, the cabinet would be safe by a margin of four votes.Should two throw their weight beh.nd the Government its mar-g n would be two votes. The support of one Indeper.dent would give the adm nlstra-tion a technical victory because Mr.Speaker, a Liberal, could be expected to break the resulting 131-vote tie by favoring the motion. So all three Independents must vote with the Opposition to bring down the Government.Th s reasoning, of course, is based on the assumption that on one side than the other, all the house is at full voting bets are off.Khe Sanh marines are up tight' as enemy troops tighten ring 3 provîntes in forbidding mood By THE CANADIAN PRESS Leg slatures in three Canadian story of an apparently fool-proof scheme for homicide that fell apart. It was the story of a successful psychiatrist who, tired of his wife, laid an elaborate plot to get rid of her.The doctor and a woman patient who was in love with him made the arrangements. She dressed and made up to look like his wife.He told the wife that they were off on a short-notice holiday in Mexico. Then, about to leave, he strangled her, left her for dead, simulated a burglary and met his disguised accomplice. The pair staged a quarrel on the plane before take-off and she stormed off.The doctor went on alone—and after getting rid of some evidence, returned to face the sad news.It seemed a perfect crime, but Lieut.Columbo was not satisfied, suspected the doctor immediately, and used psychology to trap the expert in human behavior.Up until the final event that turned the trick—a shopworn device that was not up to the rest of the show—it was a highly entertaining suspense tale.TRAPPED BY EGO Gene Barry turned in a nicely chilling performance as a cool, arrogant killer who was finally tripped by his own ego.Peter Falk as the overly apologetic and persistent cop, developed an interesting character. The Amazon, another of the National Geographic Society special programs on CBS, was a sight-seeing trip on the great river from its source to its mouth.Along the way, we saw everything from contemporary cities to almost untouched wilderness The most interesting portions showed the wildlife of the river —snakes and birds in particular —and the people, including some primitive RETURN TO ARENA In recent years they have been slowly returning to the political arena. The Vietnam war has prompted many performers to speak out in a manner they would not have dared a few years ago.“I’m just not a political fellow,” says actor-director Carl Reiner, and I’ve never been politically active before.“I never dared, because I saw too many of my friends ruined during the McCarthy era.“But now I’m taking a position.I’m too disturbed about what might happen in Vietnam to stand by and do nothing.” Last month Reiner acted as emcee for a Broadway for Peace benefit at Lincoln Centre’s Philharmonic Hall in New York City. The program featured two dovish senators, Gruening of Alaska and Morse of Oregon, plus an assemblage of show business figures.;:M a.m.5i Hugh Down* 7:05 t.ni.8) News: Benti 7:45 t.m.8) Farm and Home 7:55 a.m.3) Yarmont Report l:C0 a.m.3) Captain Kangaroo 8) Your Breakfast Serial 1:30 a.m.8) Porky Pig-Cartoons 9:00 a.m.3) Romper Room 5) Women's News 8) Bullwinkle: Cartoons »:15 a.m.6) Montreal Note Book 12) Expo Guide 9:30 a.m.3) Ed Allen Time 6) Quebec Schools •) Art at Your Fingertips 12) University of the Air 9:45 a.m.8) Our New Hampshire 10:00 a.m.3) Candid Camera 5) Snap Judgment 6) Canadian Schools 8) Baby Game 12) Romper Room 10:25 a.m.5) News 8) Children's Doctor 10:30 a.m.3) Beverly Hillbillies 5) Concentration 6) Friendly Giant 9) Donna Reed 12) Magic Tom 10:45 a.m.4» Chez Helene 11:00 a.m.3) Andy Griffith 5) Personality 6) Mr.Dresup 8) Temptation 12) Mike Douglas 11:25 a.m.6) Pick of the Week 11:30 a.m.j) Dick van Dyke 5) Hollywood Squares 8) How's Your Mother In-Law 11:55 a.m.6) News 12:00 noon 5) Jeopardy 3) Love of Life 6' Serial Six 8) Tell Me, Dr.Brothers 12:25 p.m.3) News, Benti 12:30 p.m.3.4) Search for Tomorrow 8) Treasure Isie 5) Eye Guess 12) Little People 12:45 p.m.8, 6) Guitding Light 12:55 p.m.5) News, Newman 1:00 p.m.3) Across the Fence 5) Dark Shadows 4) News 8) Fugitive 1:05 p.m.6) Calendar 1:15 p.m.3) Ch.3 Presents 1:30 p.m.3. 6) As The World Turns 5) Let's Make a Deal 12) Mr.and Mrs.2:00 p.m.4, 3) Love Is A Many Splendored Thing 5) Days of our Lives 12) In Town 2:30 p.m.i) Houseparty 5) The Doctors 6) Coronation Street 8) Virginia Graham 12) People in Conflict 3:00 p.m.3) To Tell the Truth 5) Another World 6) Take Thirty 8) General Hospital 12) Magistrate's Court 3:25 p.m.3) News: Edwards 3:30 p.m.3, 6) Edge of Night 5) You Don't Say 8) Dark Shadows 12) It's Your Move 4:00 p.m.3) Merv Griffin 8) Dating Game 6) Bonnie Prudden 8) Match Game 121 Buddies 4:25 p.m.5) News: Kalber 4:30 p.m.5) Mike Douglas 6) Upside Town 8) Bewitched 12) Movie: "Kiss of Fire" 5:00 p.m.3) Secret Storm 6) Shazzani 8) Local News 5:30 p.m.8) News, Weather, Sports 4) Let's Go 3) News: Weather, Sports 4:00 p.m.5) News, Weather, Sports 4) Let's Talk Music 8) Movie: "The White Tower" 12) Pierre Barton 4:30 p.m.3) News - Reasoner 5) News.Huntley Brinkley ij News, Sports 12) Pulse, News 7:00 p.m.3) McHale s Navy 5) Truth or Conse quences i) Seven On Six 12) Smothers Brother 7:30 p.m.3 Wild, Wild West 5) Tarzan s) 21st Century 8) Off to See the Wiz ard 8:00 p.m.6) Get Smart 12) Movie: "Sparrows Can't Sing" 8:30 p.m.3) Gomer Pyle 5) Star Trek A » Tommy Hunter.Music 8) Operation: Enter- tainment 9:00 p.m.3) Movie: "The Great Escape" 2.8) Movie: "The Young Doctors" 9:30 p.m.5) Hollywood Squares 6) Guns of Will Sonnett 10:00 p.m.5) Tomorrow's World 6) Judd 12) Big Valley 11:00 p.m.i, V 4, 8, *2) News 11:20 p.m.6) Viewpoint 12) Pulse.News 11:25 p.m.A) Local News 11:30 p.m.3) Movie: "Full of Life" 5) Johnny Carson 8) Movie: "Untamed Youth" 11:45 p.m.12) Movie: "Voice In the Mirror" 11:50 p.m.6) Movie: "Incident In an Alley" Lake Megantic Friends are happy to learn that the condition of Miss Florence Bailey, a patient in St.Joseph's Hospital, is much improved.Mr.James Wood is in Brown-ville, Me., for a few days, the guest of his sister, Mrs.Harvey MacRae, and calling on Mr.MacRae, who is ill in hospital.Recent guests at the Wood home have been Mr.H.Wood, Montreal, who spent a week with his parents, and Mr and Mrs.Donald Smyth, Ot tawa, who were weekend guests.Mrs.Alex Maclver and Mrs.Mary Maclver, Scotstown, were in town to visit Mr Alex Maclver, who is a patient in St.Joseph’s Hospital, and were the guests of Mr.and Mrs.Donald Morrison while here.Mr.and Mrs.Maurice Veron-neau, Lennoxville, accompanied Mr.and Mrs.Neil Stewart on a trip of a few days to Boston and Springfield, Mass. While in Springfield they were guests of Mr.and Mrs.Tom Veronneau and Mr.and Mrs.Dan Allen respectively.MAIN SOURCE It’s estimated one-third of a metropolitan area’s air pollution comes from combustion and fuel-burning equipment; war in history,” which lasted only six days, Mr.Shukrallah admitted the U.A R.was defeated rapidly because of the advantage Israel has in a desert war.He descr.bed how the Israelis bombed and destroyed the Arab air force, completely crip pling the military at the start of the war, Since those six days in June, he claimed the Israelis have been imposing a Nazi-like rule on the people in the Arab They are terrorizing the Arabs in the occupied land, he said, bull-dozing houses and evicting people from their homes.Once they were persecuted, now they are the persecutors, he said of the Israelis.Mr Shukrallah claimed the Arabs want only peace but not on Israel s terms who will keep the peace only if they control the complete economy of the Middle East.He said the United Arab Republic wants to have only what belongs to the Arab people.“There is no question of us wanting to force the Israelis into the Red Sea,” Mr.Shuk-rallah stated But, he went on, the Israelis have been very open and have claimed they will begin anoth er strong offensive in the sjiring.Mr.Shukrallah said the Arabs are ready. They have re-built their military force as strong as it ever was He talked about the arms the Arabs receive from the Soviet Union.“We pay through the nose for every little thing we buy from the Soviet Union,” Mr.Shukrallah said.He said the Arabs asked Uie U.S.A.for arms but this request was refused time and t ine again. However, the Israelis were receiving weapons free from the United States he claimed. The Arabs were fully aware the Israelis would launch another offensive as in 1954 ano 1956, and have no one to turn to but the Russians. The United States could end all the friction in the Middle East by asking the Jews to demilitarize, Mr Shukrallah said. The U.A.R.would gladly de militarize as well if it meant peace. He said the Arabs could not afford to pay for the necessary arms from Russia because funds are drastically needed for the U.A R.s program of hold discussions with officials of the Federal depart ment of Energy.Mines and Re sources.According to Quebec Asbestos Mining Association General Manager Paul Filteau.the Soviet asbestos experts are espec ially interested in Canadian technology for asbestos process ing, production control opera tons and dust removal. They are also said to be in terested in techniques, equip ment and methods used to eva luate quality, and in manufactured products containing asbes- tos fibre.Asbestos ,s principally mined on an annual basis in the Ural Mountains region.Soviet asbestos output is believed to be
