to send a brigade into the area. The UN raised no objections to the restoration of Egyptian ad- j ministration. If Worst Since 1906Disaster SAN FRANCISCO - (•* Nf—49 .y* -'O- ' MORTY MEEKlf By Dick Cavalli MR.socwrK «N'T IN.AND YOU 0E ASHAMED CPYOUKSCLf THE fOORMAN «ABOUTAT nïceNPor H» «DPE/ MOUNDINfi lilMUKE TH» ALL THE TIME I SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD, SATURDAY, MAR.23, 1957 1 Church notices must be sent in by 12 noon Friday.Anglican Church of Canada CHURCH OF THE ADVENT Bowen Avenue South Rev.Ronald Reeve, M A., B.D., Priest In Charge Sunday, March 24th., 1957.Third Sunday In Lent 8.00 a.m.—Holy Communion.10.00 a.m.—Sunday School.11.00 a.m.—Mattins Monday, March 25th.Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.7.30 a.m.—Holy Communion.Wednesday, March 27th.7.30 a.m.—Holy Communion.8.00 p.m.—Lenten Service.g>î.îpptcr’B (Ehurrlj tent III 8.00 a.m.—Holy Communion.11.00 a.m.—Morning Prayer.7.30 p.m.—Evening Prayer.Monday The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.10.00 a.m.—Holy Communion.Wednesday 10.00 a m.—Holy Communion.8.00 p.m.—Lenten Service Friday 7.30 a.m.—Holy Communion.CHURCH OF ST.PAUL THE APOSTLE The Third Sunday In Lent 11.00 a.m.—Sung Eucharist.9.45 a m.—Church School Wednesday 8.00 p.m.—Lenten Service.Baptist Church Corner of Portland & Queen Streets Rev.F.C.Amery, Minister.Mrs.C.Wright, Organist.Mrs.E.A.Salter, Choir Director.10.00 a.m.—Sunday School and Bible Classes.11.00 a.m.—Worship Service.Subject: “THE PURPOSE OF PARABLES.” 7.00 p.m.—Evening Worship arranged and conducted by Members of the Mission Crusade Circle.Speaker: Mrs.A.W.Bampton.NORTH HATLEY 10.30 am—Sunday School.3.00 p.m.—Worship Service.Subject: “THE COSTLY GIFT." Let us wait upon the Lord our God in worship and adoration.Come and worship with us.Undenominational GRACE CHAPEL Montreal Street Evangelical — Undenominational SUNDAY SERVICES 10.30 a.m.—The Lord’s Supper.2.30 p.m.— Sunday School. The film “MARTYRED MEN” will be shown.7.00 p.m.-EVANGELISTIC SERVICE.Mr.J.Y.Aiken, of Toronto, will speak.8.15 p.m.—Evening Communion.Wednesday, 8 p.m.Prayer & Bible Study.Listen to “The Glad Tidings Hour” broadcast over CRTS on Sunday at 5.30 p.m.MEET YOUR FRIENDS AT THE CHAPEL.Huntingville Christian Church Huntingville Morning Worship and Sunday School.Subject: “A LENTEN MEDITATION." Speaker Andrew J.Patton, B.A.Special music rendered by The Girls’ Choir. The Presbyterian Church In Canada ST.ANDREW’S CHURCH 280 Frontenac Street Minister.Rev.Sidney G.Garland, M.A., B.D.Mr.L.F.Jenne, Organist and Choir Director Sunday, March 24th„ 1957.At Eleven (Broadcast» Subject: “NOT BY BREAD ALONE.” At Four-thirty Subject: "BARABBAS OR CHRIST?” CHURCH SCHOOL Junior, Intermediate, Senior Departments at 10.00 a.m.Adult Bible Class at 10.15 a.m.Kindergarten-Primary at 11.00 a.m.Bring your children to the Church School. You arc cordially invited to the Services. The United Church Of Canada (Eomnrram At Srintta Court and William Street Rev.Henry Mathews, M.A.Mrs.R.J.Beil, L.Mus., Organist and Choir Leader.Sunday, March 24th., 1957.11.00 a.m.—Morning Service.Sermon Subject: “WORSHIP IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS.” CHURCH SCHOOL 9.45 a.m.—Senior, Interme- diate & Junior Groups.11.00 a.m.—Primary, Begin- ners and Nursery Groups.3.00 p.m.—Radio Programme.7.30 p.m.—Evening Service.Sermon Subject: “DASTARDLY TRAITORS.” 8.15 p.m.—Friendship Hour, Everyone cordially invited.8.15 p.m.—Y.P.U.Meeting.Special Series Of Evening Services March 24,—Dastardly Traitors.March 31—Craven Cowards.April 7—Prejudiced Religious Leaders.April 14—Holy Mary.April 21—Holy Terrors.Jîhinuwtly (Hljurrlj Established 1835 United Church of Canada Dufferin Ave.at Montreal St.Rev.R.C.Tait Minister Mr.Gault Parker Organist and Choir Director 10.15 a.m.—Young People’s Bible Class.11.00 a.m.—Church School.11.00 a.m.—Public Worship.Sermon theme: "STANDING BY OUR PRINCIPLES” “Come, let us worship and bow down.Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” SANGSTER MEMORIAL CHURCH In The Women’s ç , Miss Mary Long Annual Meeting Held By àpnere Primary Lifo Lennoxville W.I.Group Corner Renault and Galt Streets.Minister Rev.Joseph E Boucher, D.D.Choirmaster: Ernest Howland.Organist: Mrs.E.Howland.Sunday School Superintendent: Walter Mutchler, Jr.Morning Worship at 11.00.Theme: “THE COMPASSION OF CHRIST FOR THE SUFFERING.” Church School at 10.15 and 11,00 a.m.A warm welcome to slrangers and visitors.I was glad when they said un-Jo me; straight rhampionship of he Massawippi Valley Hockey League Tuesday evening when hey edged out the Magog Aces 21 to wrap up the best of seven series 41.The battle was dose the whole way and we are of the .pinion that the ‘•breaks” played a big part in deciding the 1956 >7 champions. The league, on the whole, had a very successful season and the attendance reached the highest figures in the history of the 'irruit.A grand total of 40,777 paid to see the seven teams in action while in the playoffs 25,409 moved through the turnstiles. This is a silent proof that the fans hacked the league and ap proved it.The finals between the Aces and Meteors drew 9,0024 and if this series had gone a few more games a new record would have been set.The Aces just lacked the extra punch when required as it is very seldom that a good team, with a big lead, drops the decision. Two of the games went overtime and the Ares were unlucky to drop both of them.In the last tilt the Meteors came up with the best display and earned the win as the Aces played below par.The Asbestos team will now take on the winners of the Montreal playoffs next Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon in the Mining Town.We think that the Meteors will give a good ac rount of themselves but they certainly will meet some tough opposition. As for the other teams in the loop we would like to take this opportunity of thanking them for their fine support during the vear. They marie things easy for their president. There was the odd discussion but on the whole the league ran fairly smooth. To Clem Fortin, vice-president, and Norman llatrie, secretary, we would like to extend our sincere thanks for their great help in making things run in top gear.As for the Meteors, the league champions, good luck in answer why the Canadians finished so far down the list — poor eon rfitioning compared to the top boys.Thev claim that stars like Sailer, .losl Rieder, Christian Pravda and Anderl Moltcrer don’t ski any differently. They are just in better condition to perform at top speed for a longer period of time. The C.A.S.A.announced its decision not to send anyone to the F.I.S.World Championships next winter unless their performances were of international calibre. No more “experience” trips. We wonder how the C.A.S.A.thinks the skiers will get experience unless they compete in all meets around the country. This is the only way to acquire it we know of.If Canada wants to compete in world sporting events the officials must realize there is only one thing to do.Set up a special training systom and stick to it.Don’t wait until three weeks before the event and then commence. Two months training isn’t enough to get skiers in top shape to compete in these acknowledges a few problems still existed but he hoped they would be eliminated by the time the regular season gets underway in four weeks. On the other hand Joe Adcock, the slugging firsi baseman from Milwaukee, who ruins Brooklyn pitching, thinks his Braves have a better chance to win the pennant this year than in 1956.in the National League.Pitching staff is the equal of any.Despite this he still in an attempt to bolster the wobbly rainbow trout family of Germany. The eggs were imported by the Association of American Rod and Gun Clubs in Europe after the organization learned a fatal disease threatens to ruin German trout fishing. One theory is that German trout are catching the disease be.cause they have degenerated through years of inbreeding.Rainbow trout were sent to Germany from the United States in 1882 and thrived. No new stock has been introduced since then, however, the association said. The Rod and Gun Club Association is made up of clubs spon sored by tî.S, armed forces in Europe.By JACK HAND ST.PETERSBURG, Fla.—(AP) —The gossip around major league baseball camps this spring is that St.Louis Cardinals j are the mast improved team in the National League while Brooklyn and Milwaukee have been standing pat and Cincinnati making only one major move, the Cards have continued to shift key men hither and yon.A year ago the league waited anxiously for general manager Frank Lane to start the wild trading that marked him the “David Harum’’ of the American League when he was at Chicago. They didn't have to wait long.Soon St.Louis fans were moaning about the departure of local heroes such as Harvey Haddix, j Bill Virdon, Red Schoendicnst and the promising young Jackie Brandt.j When the dust settled they ^ were still a staggering 17 games j off the pace.Lane and manager ! Freddie Hutchinson had made impressive gains in their first | year.Although Lane's cars still burned from the criticism when Virdon, traded to Pittsburgh, hit I .319 to .214 by Bobby Del Greco who came from Pittsburgh to St.Louis as a centre field replacement, he made still more moves. In early December, Tom Pohol-sky, Jackie Collum and Ray Katt shuffled off to Chicago Cubs for Sam Jones, Jim Davis, Hobie Landrith and Eddie Miksis.Later he sent Rip Repuslki and Bobby Morgan to Philadelphia for Del Ennis, the fighthanded long ball threat he had been searching for a \\-ear.Recently he picked up Hoyt Wilhelm from New York | for his bullpen in exchange for first baseman Whitcy Lockman.Without giving up too much front-line strength, Lane appears i lo have added a regular outfielder.a starting pitcher and solid relief help.Small wonder then that Hutch-j inson said: “If we can get a couple of breaks, we have a chance to go ! all the way .“We’ve got at least three pitchers capable of winning 20— Hcrm Wehmeier, Sam Jones and Vinegar Bend Mizell.Boyer should be improved, Hal Smith looks like a better catcher and Ennis will help us.Stan Musial could do better, settled down at first base for the year.” The Cardinal infield is just about set with Musial .310 at first, sophomore Don Blasingame .261 at second, 34-year-old Alvin Dark .275 at short and Boyer .306 at third.Centre field is the problem.Wally Moon .298 in left and Ennis .260 with 26 homers and 95 runs batted in for the Phils in right field are fixtures.Chuck Harmon, who hit .360 at Ohaha after he came to St.Louis from Cincinnati, has been getting a chance to take the centre job.Del Greco must pick up on his hitting lo beat out Harmon.Smith .282, a winter sensation in Havana, is the No.1 catcher with the left handed hitting Landrith .221 at Chicago to help.IBC Gets Green Light From Ryan To Stage Bout NEW YORK—(TP)—Officials of the International Boxing Club said Friday they had been told by Federal Judge Sylvester Ryan that the organization is “free to continue its negotiations with Archie Moore, light heavyweight champion, for a title bout.” Judge Ryan telephoned the IBC from Florida, w’here he is vacationing briefly, the IBC said.Judge Ryan ruled March 8 that the IBC, qf winch James D.Norris is president, was a monpoly on promoting and staging of world championship title fights.Negotiations with Moore for a fight, probably in Detroit on June 7, were halted by Norris who said he did so “for fear of appearing to flout the judge’s ruling.” Norris and his attorney then asked the judge for advice. It is probable that Moore will defend his title against the winner of the April 5 bout between Tony Anthony of New York and Chuck Spierser of East Lansing, Mich.ses may not settle the issue, NHL regulations provide next for decision on the basis of most goals. In 69 games Canadians have scored 207 goals and the Bruins 193.If Canadiens defeat Chicago Black Hawks here Saturday night and Boston wins at home against New York Rangers, Canadiens will get the official nod—unless, of course, the Bruins pile up some weird goal total. Not even the Bruins are hopeful of that. Two individuals titles are still hanging in the balance as the teams swing into their last week-end of regular-schedule play.Gordie Howe of Detroit heads the league’s scorers with 84 points.Jean Beliveau of Montreal has 83 and Ted Lindsay of Detroit 82.The Red Wings have two game left, both against fifth-place Toronto Maple Leafs—in Toronto Saturday and in Detroit Sunday. If Beliveau is to finish ahead of Howe he will have to stage something of a scoring spree Saturday.Should there be a tie on points at the finish, the S1.000 award goes to the player with the most goals.Howe has scored 42, Beli-veau 33 and Lindsay 28 The runner-up gets S500.Another $1,000—and nothing lor runner-up—is still at stake between goalies Glen Hall of Detroit and Jacques Plante of Montreal. The goalie award—the Ve-zina Trophy—goes to Ibe goalie who has played the most games for the team least scored on during the season.Hall has been beaten 153 times but has two games to go against rdante’s one.Plante is charged , with 155 goals, including 32 scor-!
