Communique Declares Eight Men, Including Recently Deposed Vice-Commissar for War, Have Pleaded Guilty to Conspiring with Foreign Power “Unfriendly” to Government-Means Summary Execution. The mighty Dunkerque, super-cruiser of the French fleet which was France’s response to recent German “pocket-battleships,” slips like a thin, mena cing projectile of animated steel through calm waters during naval manoeuvres off France’s west coast. The secrecy with which French naval authorities have veiled the details of its construction makes the Dunker que a mystery craft, said to be the most heavily armored and fastest fighting craft afloat.-* The others were held for investi-* gation. In the series of clashes which led to the arrests, a patrolman fired a shot of warning in the air and another officer struck a union leader in the fact. There were no other reported ,n-cidents of violence as the auto-mobiles carrying the unionists were halted at the city limits.Special police, hastily reinforced -by recruits armed with rifles, shotguns, smalt arms, clubs and gas grenades, began demobilizing with word that the marchers had returned to their homes. The highway blockades were reduced to skeleton forces. The pilgrimage was planned by members of the Pontiac U.A.W.À.local in sympathy with striking members of another Committee for Industrial Organization union who were routed from their picket line near the Newton Steel Company’s rolling mill here last night.From- eight to twenty persons were injured in the skirmish between some two hundred officers and special police who laid down a tear gas barrage. The dispersal of the picket line permitted non-striking employees of the mill to return to it for the first time since it was closed by a labor dispute May 28, Several hours of tense quietude separated that fight and the arrival of the vanguard of unionists from Pontiac. They were halted by the augmented force of officers, carrying rifles and shotguns, at a blockade on the main road leading into Monroe from the north.A tractor and trailer was parked across the highway.A group of fifty officer's guarded the point.-A?each automobile arrived its occupants were questioned, searched for weapons and told to turn hack if they proved to he C.LO.members.Unconfirmed reports said the officers seized one gun and a few improvised weapons from some of the union men.As soon as word of the movement on Monroe reached here Mayor Daniel A.Knaggs sought vainly to communicate with Gov.Frank.Murphy to renew his previously-rejected request for National Guard assistance. The Governor had indicated late yesterday the possibility of sending troops into Monroe if C.T.O.members attempted to invade the city, but the Mayor was unable to reach him during the night.Seven pion and one woman on the picket line were given hospital Please Turn to Page 2, Col.8.Germany And Italy To Resume Spanish Patrol Duties Today Official British Spokesman Announces Final insurgent army, tested Bilbao’s “Iron Ring” defences today. The rainy weather broke after all but paralyzing Biscayan operations since Mola’s death in an airplane crash June 3 and Davila sent airmen and artillerymen against the main defence system of the beleaguered Basque capital. The Associated Press correspondent watched the start of the renewed .offensive yesterday from Lemonn Peak, less than eight miles southeast of Bilbao, and saw tons of explosives dropped on the steel and concrete fortifications in the narrow strip separating the besieging army from its goal.Back Conservatives prepared to meet the entry of a third party into the June 29 fight for ballots.First candidacy outside the ranks of the two old-line parties was expected to materialize from a Cape Breton Labor meeting set for tonight. In the other twenty-nine ridings, the two major parties had a clear field so far.The Liberal Government had its candidates named for twenty-nine of the seats, and the Conservatives had the same number. Both parties expected to have their slates completed by Saturday night.Only nominee of last night was R.H.Butts, veteran Conservative campaigner, chosen by an Antigo-nish convention. His nomination was supported from the platform by Opposition Leader G.S.Harrington, who promised to “bring secondary roads back to the condition we left them (in 1933) and Note Delivered by French Government to Great Bri tain Seeks to Bring Together Divergent Camps on Collective Security Issue.Paris, June 11.—France has resumed negotiations for a new Locarno treaty.A note said by informed sources to have reaffirmed the Paris Government's stand on collective security, adherence to the League of Nations and Belgian neutrality, was delivered yesterday by Charles Corbin, ambassador to London, to the British Foreign Office._ The principal purpose of the note, diplomatic circles , asserted, was an attempt to bring together the divergent views of the two western European camps—'Italy and Germany on one side and France, Great Britain and Belgium on the other. The authoritative commentator, Pertinax, declared the note constituted the first action whereby France sought to bring the powers together in a new Locarno after Chancellor Hitler, of Germany denounced the pact and remilitarized the Rhineland in March, 1936.Pertinax added that since negotiations have been going on for more than a year “they had the possibility of becoming eternal.” BELGIAN UPPER HOUSE PASSES AMNESTY BILL Freedom Granted Large Number of North Flemings Who Sided with Germany in Great War Despite Protests of War Veterans.Brussels, June 11.—The Belgian Senate in an early morning session today passed a bill, ninety to sixty-four .over the opposition of war veterans, to pardon all Belgians convicted of treason during the Great War.Cheers resounded from the gallery as the Senate adopted the amnesty measure which Premier Paul Van Zeeland declared would contribute to “national unity.” The bill, alrdeay passed by the Lower House, principaly affects Flemings in North Belgium, many of whom sided with Germany during the war in the hope a German victory would result in an independent Flemish state. Some of those convicted of treason are still in prison.Opposition to the amnesty threatened a cabinet crisis after angry veterans ranking war lords on trial for their lives today, charged with high treason and conspiring with a foreign power “unfriendly” to I he Government.Among those summoned before the secret military tribunal was Marshal Michail Nikolaevitch Tukhachevsky, one of the five Red Army marshals, who was Vice-Commissar of War prior lo May 11th, and only on Wednesday was broken from his command of the important Volga military garrison. An official communique said all had pleaded guilty.Under the laws governing the trial this meant certain and immediate execution on conviction with the right of appeal denied. It was the Soviet’s third great treason trial within less than a year.Sixteen defendants were shot after being tried in July, 1936, and thirteen were executed after a trial last January. In addition to Tukhachevsky, the accused were: General Kazimirovilch V.Putna, former military attache in London.General A.1.Kork, former commandant of the Frumze Military Academy.General stillness of the night the death angel came and her weary spirit was wafted out on the Wings of the Morning to join the throng eternal.“In her going, we who knew her and loved her have lost a above indicate the vast sum of money involved in Dominion Stores operation. This money flows through the channels of manufacturer, farmer, landlord, employee and the public utilities to all parts of the Province.Dominion Stores serve the people of Quebec through one hundred and twenty-four stores situated in the large cities, and in smaller towns as well. Not only are these communities able through Dominion Stores to obtain good food at low prices, but farmers for miles around find a market for their produce: a double-advantage that is eagerly sought and does much to explain Dominion Stores’ steady growth.Dommion Stores’ policy is based on quick distribution from the producer to the consumer, therefore no time is wasted in shipping from distant points where we can get days. The party of the second part in this latest dealing in diamond flesh, the Washington Senators, seem to have all the better of it by obtaining Rick and Wes Ferrell, with Mel AJama thrown in, in return for Ben Chapman and Buck Newsom.Of course.Boston has a crying need for a veteran outfielder like Chapman, but temperamental Ben hasn’t been of much use to the Nats this year anuyway.and is batting a mediocre .262.In giving up Newsom, too, the Senators aren’t losing much.At the same time, Washington came out of the.business with a crack catcher—easily one of the Jea-gue’s best three—in Rick Ferrell. The trade stole the headlines away from yesterday’s major league programme, eclipsing even the end of the Chicago 'White Sox’s ten-game winning streak, longest of the majors this season. The New York Yankee* clubbed out a ter.to three win over the Sox to end the run and regain sole possession of the American League’s first place. While the National League leading New York Giants were idle with £t.Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Cubs moved to within a half game of the pace-setters by walloping the Brooklyn Dodgers by nine to three.* The Tigers topped the Athletics by four to three." St.Louis Browns whipped the Senators by six to three, and the Red Sox and Indians were rained out.Cincinnati Reds’ two-rur.splurge in the ninth was enough to top the Boston Bees by six to five and, in the only other big league game, the Phillies made it two in a row over the Pirates by five to four.BUFFALO SHOVED TORONTO OUT OF FIRST DIVISION Having taken care of Toronto’s threat on their third place position in the International League so well that the Leafs are out of the first division, Buffalo's belting Bisons began making gestures toward advancing themselves at the expense of the other Canadian entry—Montreal’s Royals. The Bisons were one and a half games behind the second-place Royals today but dislodging them is going to be a more difficult task than the Toronto proposition for more reasons than one. They whipped off the Leafs in three on: of four encounters in their own bailiwick.Today the Bisons are faced with the job of gaining while on the road. The blow that knocked the Leafs out of current contention wa= handed them last night as Bill ''Hard Luck’’ Harris pitched seven-hit ball for the Herd while his mates were clubbing Mike Meola for twice as many and a seven to five victory. The thirty-six year old right-hander hurled shutout ball in six of the nine innings.A three-run homer coming off the bat of Joe Gantenbein in the sixth was the biggest Toronto blow.Ed Phillips, Bison backstop, smashed out a homer in the second inning hut suffered a severe contusion of the ankle in the fifth when he was hit by a foul from hi' own hat.He may be lot* to his team for a week or more. The Syracuse Chiefs moved in ahead of the Leafs in fourth place by virtue of a seven to two triumph over the injury-riddle Rochester Red Wings. The Chiefs concentrated their attack in the second and third frames on wild Cbcar Judd and coasted through easily.Jack Sturdy, the Wing third-sacker, joined his
