[" herbronke lailu mwnrù Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, CANADA, TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 1933.Thirty-Seventh Year APPROVAL GIVEN UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF ACT AFTER BITTER DEBATE TODAY IN PARLIAMENT.Seven Progressives Joined With Government to Extend Legislation Now in Force and Give Government Broader Powers—Majority of Forty-Three Recorded— Up to Very Last Minute Opposition Leader Registered His Objections—Hon.H.H.Stevens to Resume Budget Debate Today.Ottawa, March 28.—With the contentious Relief Bill finally approved, the House of Commons today resumes debate, on the budget.Hon.H.H.Stevens, Minister of Trade and Commerce, will be the first speaker, and will reply to the attacks made on the Government’s financial administration last week by Hon.J.L.Ralston, Liberal member for Shelburne-Yarmouth, and G.G.Coote, United Farmer representative for McLeod, the Opposition financial critics.Up to the very last minute Rt.Hon.W.L.Mackenzie King, Liberal leader, continued to protest against the Relief Bill.Just before it received third reading last night he re-stated his objections to it and insisted on a roll call vote which gave the Government a majority of forty-three.Seven Progressives voted with the Government and three Laborites joined the Liberals in voting against the bill, which extends the relief legislation now in effect for another year and adds to the extraordinary powers reposed in the Government.Mr.King had two chief objections to the bill. The powers given the Government to preserve “Peace, Order and Good Government” in Canada were dictatorial powers, he claimed. There was no need for a dictator- #-— ship in Canada.British peoples in the past had been content to place their trust in parliamentary institutions, and the destruction of power of Parliament was a retrograde step.Further, he claimed the system under which relief is administered is entirely wrong. The Dominion contributed money to the Provinces, who spent it as they chose. The principle of responsibility was lacking as one authority raised the money and another spent it.This encouraged the provinces to embark on projects which they would not ordinarily undertake just to secure Dominion funds and enabled them to retain services which their own tax revenues would not support.Passing of a bill to amend the Dominion Notes Act to permit the Government to suspend gold payments on Canadian currency gave rise to a general discussion of the currency question and the gold standard. There was little contention about it and the bill received third reading without opposition.During the course of the debate on the proposals to amend the Dominion Notes Act, Premier Bennett presented a rather interesting lecture on the growth and development of the present monetary system. He gave some figures showing the extent Ottawa, March 28.—The Sgn-j ate today will resume sessions 1 after a week’s adjournment, and the House of Commons will con-i tinue debate on the budget. The House yesterday passed J on third reading the bill to S permit suspension of gold pay- | j ments on Dominion notes with- , j out division, and a vote of 89 to 1 46 passed third reading of the I | bill to extend the Relief Act I another year.Premier R.B.Bennett explain- j | ed the Government’s currency [ i policy and the need of sticking j | to the gold basis while Canada { j has external debts to meet.Rt.Hon.W.L.M.King, Op- i position leader, denounced the | “Peace Order and Good Govern- 1 ment” clause of the Relief Bill J and protested at what he called | the seting up of a dictatorship | in Canada.PREFERS JAIL LIFE Salt Lake City, March 28.—After a week’s vacation, taken unannounced, Mary Barker is back home, working for her shelter, food and clothing in the place she chose twenty-five years ago for her abode — the city jail.Life outside the jail, she announced, was too arduous.MUSSOLINI’S PEACE PROPOSAL IS DEFENDED BY PREMIER DALADIER FATAL RESULTS FOLLOW COLLISION WITH TRUCK! Be Concluded Without Its Knowledge.Paris, March 28.—Premier Daladier, supporte^ by a cheering Chamber of Deputies, today defended Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald, of Great Britain, and Premier Mussolini, of Italy, against an opposition attack in the chamber on the Italian premier’s feur-power peace plan. The attack culminated in an expression by Deputy Henry Franklin-Bouillon that the four-power peace plan was an “abominable collusion between Mr.Macdonald and Signor Mussolini.” By a vote of 369 to 212 the Chamber postponed interpellations HOPE OF ADJOURNMENT OF QUEBEC adjournment of Ihe Quebec Parliament at tho end of next week is unlikely, and the members home much before Easter day.The Private Rills Committee of the Assembly has almost completed its work, and the bills remaining for its attention are of minor importance, and not contentious. The scene as regards private legislation transfers itself to the Legislative Council this week, when it is hoped that the Montreal Bill will be dealt with and terminated. The bill has not yet been reprinted, following its passage of the Assembly, but it is hoped that the Upper House will be able to turn its attention to it by Thursday. While private legislation is almost ail disposed of as regards the.Assembly, there still remains considerable to be done by the Public Bills Committee, but it may be expected that the machinery there will be speeded up, now that so many members of that committee need no longer tarry before the Private Bills Committee. In the way of important public legislation there remains the measure to amend the Workmen’s Compensation Act, but as the amendments have __________________________________ ^ already been discussed at a conference between the interested parties After a day of mass protest, Jews throughout the world watched today the situation of their brethren in Germany, where the Government launched an “antilie campaign.” Alleged mistreatment of Jews in the P.eich was protested at meetings last night in many parts of the world. In New York more than 22,000 packed Madison Square Garden, and there was an overflow crowd of many thousands.Alfred E.Smith, addressing this meeting, said Jews are “a peace-loving class of citizens that have been helpful to every country they inhabit,” and declared the only « thing to do with anti-Semitism of the
