[" Sherbrooke Daily Record.5 Established 1697 SHERBROOKE, QUE., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1919.PRICE TWO CENTS RAILROAD LINES IN LONDON ARE HED UP WHEN ENGT'* DRIVERS JOIN RANKS OF THE STRIKERS Order Calling Out Locomotive Engineer» on Brighton and South Western Roads, While Fulfilling Threat, is Also APPEAL FOR KHAKI FUND UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE SHERBROOKE PATRIOTIC FUND In order to carry on the work for soldiers and sailors who pass through, or who return to Sherbrooke, it has been decided to appeal to the public through the Press for a Khaki, Fund.I\tI f___ __ _ p\t|\tThe fund will be used to maintain a Khaki Club in Sherbrooke, to Looked Upon as a Retort to Letter from Andrew ISonar ^e run ag mucjl as possible (only on a much smaller scale) upon the lines Law\u2014Trains to Suburbs from Waterloo Station and of th®v,Khaxk.i cJ'lul>\t.\t.The object of the club is to provide a homelike place where returning London Terminus of South-Western Were Not Started 'this Morning.(Associated Press Despatch) LONDON, Feb.6\u2014The first step in the direction of the threatened extension of the railroad strike beyond the local lines in London was taken last night when some of the drivers on the Brighton and Southwestern roads were called out.The Union order was issued during the evening, but passenger trains ran until midnight.Freight service, however, was partially suspended, following the issuance of the strike order.Early trains to the suburbs from Waterloo station, the London terminus of the Southwestern, were not started this morning, as the drivers did not appear.Late last night an official notice was posted at Waterloo station, stating that owing to labor troubles train service might be \u201cconsiderably reduced or entirely suspended.\u201d The notice added that the railroad company was not responsible for any delay or inconvenience resulting from the strike.The centres on the Brighton route, which hitherto have not been affected are Newcross and the Battersea freight yards and Brighton and Eastbourne on the South Coast.As some of the drivers who have stopped work operate steam-driven trains, it would seem to be the intention to extend the strike to all of both the lines affected.Only sections in London and suburban areas are electrified.The Southwestern, in addition to serving many western suburbs of the city, westward through England as far as Cornwall, while the Brighton road serves a populous area in southeastern England, as far west as Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.It is one of the largest passenger roads in the southern London suburbs.The calling out of the locomotive engineers on these lines, while fulfilling a threat to call a general strike made on Monday, is also looked upon as a retort to the letter from Andrew Bonar Law, Government leader in the House of Commons, in which he refused to meet the strikers.It is also the result of the failure of J.Bromley, a secretary of the Association of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, to reach a settlement with Sir Albert Stanley, President of the Board of Trade, and Sir Robert Home, Minister of Labor.4»\t4» *\tANOTHER OUTBREAK OF * *\t\u201cFLU\u201d IN THIS PROVINCE * *\t- v *
