this, our views have been aired through 1 the pubiic press, but so far nothing has been done, and at present the matter seems to be quiescent.Perhaps we have been so busy planning for “a bigger and better Sherbrooke” that we have forgotten one way in which this may be helped forward, and that is by ; keeping before our young people, and men and women of mature years, that I no city or nation can become great unless it breeds great men and women.A memorial to our superb men would’ be a constant challenge to us to use out of selfish seeking into nobility of sacrificial service for our city and for humanity.Some of the schemes proposed for a memorial were large and elaborate.I must confess to proposing such a scheme.Perhaps wi made a mistake in this particular.We may have to accept a more modest proposal than any yet made.But whatever we may decide to do, let us do it quickly.A lot of people are waiting to be asked to give according to their means and are anxious to see a memorial established that shall express the general gratitude of the public to our immortal soldiers.Many of us will remember that when plans were being discussed for a suitable celebration of Peace Day, we were in danger of having no celebration at all.At the critical moment, when such a disgrace seemed immi- ! tient, you, as Editor of the “Record,": called a meeting of the citizens and1 organized a celebration, and thus | saved us from the stigma that such a neglect of one of the greatest days in j history would have entailed upon our ; citizenship.I would suggest that you serve us once again.Will you take steps to call a meeting to formulate plans for a Soldiers’ Memorial?Yours sincerely, G.ELLERY READ.Sherbrooke, April 26th, 1920.-«- VIENNA, April 28.—Austria is suffering from a stamp famine, due to paper shortage and the activity of collects.The government may resort to the old custom of having mail prepaid and forwarding it without stamp».NEW YORK, April 26.—More than two thousand local railroad workers were expelled Sunday from the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, for the part they have taken in the unauthorized strike in this district, according to Edward McHugh, chairman of the strikers’ executive committee.The charters of nine unions were revoked, he said.> (Associated Press Despatch) j WASHINGTON, April 26.* —Fighting between revolu-;
