it was a triumph of honest men against those who desired to carry every thing by intrigue and corruption ; and so long as he continued to serve the public, he would, he assured them, endeavour to prove his gratitude by rendering himself worthy of the position where he had been placed, by promoting first the interests of the country in general, and, then, those of the city in particular.—In a few words in English, Mr.Dorion particularly thanked the voters of that origin for the almost unanimous support they had afforded him.He had, he said, during the election, met many English and Scotch gentlemen who told him they had never known him except by his addresses; but were prepared to vote for him for the principles thetein enunciated.Mr.Holton then thanked the electors.He did noPconceive it was his personal worthiness or popularity which bad secured him the place which he had the honor to occupy.He had been selected by his political friends as the sincere though humble exponent, of their opinions,, and his return was due to the prevalence of those opinions among the electors.He might perhaps fail in discharging, with all the effect which was desirable, the duties that now devolved upon him.If so, he begged his constituents to impute it to the poverty of bis talent, or his inexperience in public affairs, and not to want of sincerity, zeal, or industry, for in those qualities ha hoped they would find no deficiency.He congratulated Montreal on the quiet and peacefulness of the election, which was due, first, no doubt, to the good sense of the community, determined, as it was, to frown down violence, let it come from what quarter it might ; next to the good spirit which had prevailed during the canvas, neither the'candidates nor (heir friends having employed any disparaging worri in their contest ; thirdly, to the moderation of: the press, which had discussed the merits of the parties without any per-somilitjes, and no doubt very greatly indeed, though he mentioned it last, to the admirable arrangements of the Sheriff, whose impariial and, judicious bearing throughout merited the thanks of the community,;as it had eained the respect of the candidates.Again he congratulated the city on having a united representation.There had been danger at one time, that it might have been represented by persons holding diverse political opinions, which would have neutralized the tepresentation.This danger was averted, and he thought it fortunate it was so.Between Mr.Dorion and himself there existed the most perfect harmony on all questions theoretical and practical ; and though he might differ from Mr.Young-on some theoretical points, be believed that gentleman on all pnactical points was at one with them.If, then, the voice of Montreal was not heard in Parliament, and if her interests were not attended to, it must be the fault of her repiesentattves.Having mentioned the name of Mr.Young, he would say one word respecting the relations existing between that gentleman and himself There had Deen circumstances in the inception and progress of the election, which Were of a nature to endanger that personal friendship of many years duration, which had existed between them, and which had resisted the shocks of the most violent political contests which had taken place in Montreal.He would only now say for himself that the past belonged to the past.He and Mr.Young had received a common mandate, and it should not be his fault if there were not the most perfect and cordial cooperation among all the members for the city in forwarding all measures which seemed to be for the good of the country or the city.Mr.Youno thanked the electors of Montreal, especially those belonging to the class of mechanics, for the position la which they bad placed him.He would seek to promote their interest by causing all raw materials to be introduced into the country free of duty.It was also most gratifying to him, a commèrcial man, to receive the support of almost the entire mercantile community.He trusted that aided by his colleagues he should be able to bring back to the city a large part of the trade which had been taken away from it.Ha congratulated the citizens on the peacefulness of the elections.As to what Mr.Holton had said, he should regret extremely if anything took place that could deprive him of the friendship of that gentleman, which he had so long enjoyed.He believed that nothing had occurred to impair that friendship) though he would take that opportunity of acknowledging that he bad gone a little too far,, in endeavouring to exact a pledge from Mr.Holton which he doubted if he would have taken himself.He felt strongly as to the ministry, and especially as to the chief minister, and felt that it was the duty of all good men to come out and oppose him.He was quite satisfied with Mr.Do-rion’s addresses, but he had asked Mr.Holton if be would pledge himself not to support any ministry tf which Mr.¦Hinclts was a member.He believed he was wrpng in attempting to exSct this pledge, and that he would not b&ve accepted it in his own ca'se.Mr.Young concluded by proposing a vote of thanks to the Sheriff for his' oonduct as returning officer.Protest of thr Defüated Candidates At Quebec.—We give ihe following extracts from a notarial protest by Messrs.Smart, Simard, and Dubord, published in the Quebôc.papers :— “Because a large majority of legal votes were recorded at the said election, in favor of said George Okill Stuart, Hypolite Dubord, and Geo.H.Simard, and of each of them ; because the majority of the Honorable Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, and of each of them, was only a colorable majority, and was composed of persons not entitled to vote at the said election, because upwards of a thousand of the votes recorded in favor of the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, and of each of them, were those of persons not possessing at the time of the said election the qualifications required by law to vote thereat; because one thousand and upwards of the votes which purpose to have been duly recorded as legal votes for and on behalf of the said Jean Chabot, Jean Bi&rrchet and Charles Alleyn, and of each of them, were those partly of persons who had voted more than once at the said election, and partly of others who were not by law qualified to vote, and because the said last mentioned voters, were not, at the same time of giving such their votes at the said election, and had not been in actual and uninterrupted possession of the lands and tenements upon which they claimed and pretended to be entitled to vote as proprietors and were not tenants according to the interest or meaning of the statute in that behalf.Because after the test of the writ for the said election and at and daring the said election, and before the return of the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, and each of them, at the said election the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn did directly and'indirecily, by themselves and each of them and their and his authorized agents for that purpose, employ divers means of corruption, by giving sums pf money, offices, places, employments, gratuities, rewards, and bonds, bills, atfff notes, and conveyances of land and promises of the same to divers electors of the said city whose votes had been given and recorded in favor of them the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, and of each of them, and by threatening divers of the said electors with the loss of their offices, salaries, incomes, and advantages with the intent to corrupt and bribe divers of the said electors to vote for them the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Chas.Alleyn, and each ot them, and to keep back divers others of them from voting for any other candidate; and that the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, and each of them did daring the period aforesaid, by the said means ol corruption, corrupt and bribe divers of the said electors to vote for them the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, and divers others ot them tp keep back from voting for any other candidate.Became the said Jean Chabot, .lean Blanchet and Charles Alleyn, and each of them, with intent to promote their and each of their elections, and oiher persons with intent to promote the election of the said Candidates and each of them did provide and furnish entertainment at the expense of them the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet and Charles Alleyn and each of them, to divers meetings of electors assemble t for the purpose of promoting such election previous to and during the election at which they and each of them were such Candidates, and did pay for, procure, and engage to pay for such entertainment, and did keep open houses and did open and support and did cause to be opened and supporied at their costs and charges divers houses of public entertainment for ihe accommodation of the electors to procure the election of the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet and Charles Alleyn, .ud did supply drink to the electors tb the great scandal of the city, and to the detriment and prejudice of the freedom of election; and in utter and open violation of the laws and statutes in force in this Province; because of"the persons purporting to be electors voting at the several poliiug places at such election, whose names are recorded in the Poll Books kept by the Deputy Returning Officers as having voted at the said election for the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet and Charles Alleyn and for each of them, one thousand and upwards never gave their voles at all and knew not in favor of whom their votes had been recorded as votes given at such election ; and because on the contrary, when asked or called upon by the Deputy Returning officer or officers to say in favor ot whom they voted or intended- to vote, such persons declared that they did not know, but handed up tickets on which the names of the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet, and Charles Alleyn, had been previously written or printed, placed in the hands of such persons, severally and respectively by the said Jean Chabot, Jean Blanchet and Charles Alleyn, or others in their interest or intriguing on their behalf at the said election; which said tickets the said persons were unable to read or understand, but from which the Deputy Returning officer read and recorded the vole, such mode of voting being subversive of the free and open expression of the opinions of the electors, exposing them to surprise, deception and fraud, and being also in direct violation of the laws and statutes regulating elections ; and because in truth and in fact numbers of the persons who so voted were deceived and cheated by the falsehoods and representations of the parties by whom such illegal tickets were thrust into their hands beforeor as they appeared at the polling places respectively, and were made to vote in direct opposition to their real views and wishes ; and because the laws and statutes of this Province have been and were from the commencement to the close of the said eléction in divers other particulars (which the said George Okill Stuart, Hypolite Duboid and George H.Simard, will at the proper time and place more particularly specify and state), violated and set at naught; and because the said pretended election was and is by reason of the premises wholly and absolutely null and void, and so ought to be held and adjudged.” The Elections.—Mr.Dewitt has been returned for Ohateauguay by a majority of about sixty over Mr.Primean.And in L’Assumption, Mr.Papin has beaten the ministerialist candidate by a majority of about one hundred and ninety.Election Lyrics.—The Toronto Patriot publishes the following detestatble doggerel in praise of the Canadian Hudson—they are altogether worthy of their subject :— Then haste to the polls, away 1 away !.Strike a panic into your foes, Drive forward your crowds, on the earliest day, Let no one waver—let none delay To record his vote for Bowes.Let no petty dissensions mar your aim—-Let Shamrock, Thistle and Rose A triple alliance in honour frame, The oppressed to shield—the slanderer shame : And secure the return of Bowes.Let Celt, and Saxon of every creed Unite—and tyrants oppose, When the victory’s won—we’re all agreed To gke three times three as Victoria’s meed And three lusty cheers for Bowes.That Butter, that Doo Tax, that Tory Hugh The caroiid vessels—who knows?— In Casilçreagb style may nick in two, And their filthy puddle of saffron hue May flow—an oblation to Bowes 11 The following address has been forwarded by the hands of Lord Elgin to the Queen:— “ To her Royal Majesty Victoria Queen of Britain and Ireland : “ Great Mother : We, the chiefs and sachems of the Six Nations of Indians, residing on the Grand River in Canada West, being assembled at our council fire iu great council, take this opportunity of assuring your Majesty ot our unalterable attachment to your Majesty.“ Great Mother: We have heard that your M'jessty ia now at war with a powerful nation, and that your warriors, with those of the French as yourAUa s, have gone bn the .war path.We ate happy to hear of this alliance, and we feel that our Great Molhet’s cause must be just “ Gfeâf Mbihëf : Your children of the Six Nations have always been faithful and active allies of your crown, and the ancestors of your red children never failed to assist in the battles of your ill,strions ancestors.“ Great Mother : We now renew the offer of our services against any external or internal enemy that may dare to attack this portion of your dominions, and we pray the Great Spirit to bless your warriors and those of your allies with victory.“ Done in great council, at our General Council Fire, this 3rd- day of June.(Signed) John S.Johnson, and torty-two Chiefs and Sachems of the Six Nations/’ Incomes in England.—From a late parliamentary return it appears that 180,682 persons paid an income tax during the year ending'Aprjl 5th, lb53.Of these 33 persons possessed more than £50,000 per annum;
