connected with tho history of Canada al an interesting period has been brought lo light. The documents and correspondence contained in this volume amount to almut IfiO distinct and separate articles.A large portion of these Mr.Christie obtained from H.Ryland Esq., ot Montreal. They had been in the possession of his father, tho Hon.Mr.Ryland, who came to this country in 1793, as confi-«lential Secretary to Lord Dorchester, and served in this capacity for twenty years un-«ler several successive (iovemors of Lower Canada. He also retained the important office of Clerk of the Executive Council till Ins decease, which took place at his residence at Heauport, in 1838.A biographical sketch of this remarkable man is prefixed lo the forthcoming volume, and will be read with undiminished interest by those among us who may remember a similar account which appeared some twenty years ago in the Mercury. He was a man who pursued ardently what he believed to be for the interests of his King and Country, zealously desiring to anglify the population of Canada by any means, that is, by compulsion, if gentler measures were not sufficient. There are, however, in the present publication other documents both before and after the era of Mr.Ryland, which cannot fail to be perused with much interest.Ami in addition to all these there will still remain for publication in a future volume the Appendices referred to in previous volumes, comprising the Reports of .ord Gosford and the Commissioners, and of ,ord Durham.Whatever opinion may be formed by different persons of tho stylo and manner in which Mr.Christie has persever-ngly performed his arduous undertaking, it is beyond all dispute that he has thrown valuable light on tho history of Lower Canada, and furnished materials which may in future imes be referred to as records of tho ighest importance in the compifotion of the annals of British North America. To attempt review of a work before it is published, were wn in a capacity to do so, would bo premature.Wc can, however, with confi-luncp repe.7t that the original documents, now brought to light in the promised volume, possess a j>cculiar interest to the inquiring mind.We aro sorry therefore to learn that only a few copies will bo for sale, between 100 and 200, and of these not more than 50 at Quebec.Persons desirous of obtaining a copy should apply without delay to Mr.P.Sinclair, tho well known Bookseller, in St.John Street, and leave their names with him.The entire edition, ns we hinted before, goes to the Legislature with tho exception of 200 copies ; of these some fifty at least will be reserved for circulation among private friends and other such purposes, leaving only at tho utmost 150 for sale.If every one of the small number reserved for sale be not
