Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

and the patriotic citizens of the Great Republic must have seen with sorrow, what a poor ligure their country made in these collections of the inuustry of all nations, when compared with many monarchical countries. One of the roost important things that Canada required has been done for it by these Exhibitions.— What it wanted was, that its great capabilities, its varied productions, its rich stores of mineral wealth should be made known to the world, and that many foolish and absurd prejudices concerning its climate, soil, &c., shiKlld be dispelled. This has in a great measure been done for it by the credible display of its productions in the two great expositions; the result will in all probability he its rapid elevation to its proper position in the stall of nations, as a great producing country.—Those Canadians, who ha\\ : not been able or fortunate enough to visit the gay city on tfte batiks of the Seine, where the present exhibition is being held, are under no < r linary obligations to the correspondent who furnishes the Montreal Gaztttt with those amusing, well written, graphic letters upon every event connected with thatexhibition. In addition to the ollicial communications ot Mr.Taché, which w^ have regularly published, we have copied from our contemporarv, for , the benefit of our readers, these v., iaole letters; and certainly it must be acknswled-ged that the descriptions are lively and interesting, making the scene and occurrence's pass, as if it were before our own eyes.He complainsof Mr.Taché objecting to call together a meeting of the Honorary Commissioners in Paris; but until we hear both sides of the question, it would be premature to comment harshly upon it.Let us rather be content with adverting to the pleasing view of the subject, and rejoice that Canada has deservedly gained so high a position at this great Exhibition, and that all things connected with her share and appearance therein have been hitherto so successfully conducted.Nxw Impkmul Postal Cm ahcjk» on Nkws-vai'Xks.—The following letters and potition —which fu ly explain themselves—received by the An >, we have pleasure in publishing.Sir Cusack Koney certainly merits, and will, we trust, receive the thanks of the people of Hritish America for the promptitude and energy with which he advocates their interests, iii this matter of Newspaper taxation.A more one-sided, paltry, petiy-larceny attempt to tnz the Colonies than this penny stamp business, it is impossible to conceive. Why, m the name of all that is just and reasonable, should the Montreal or any other foreign or colonial subscriber to an English paper be taxed a penny lor each number, while the London or Liverpool subscriber receive it free :— London.July II, tlttV Sis,—I take ths liberty «*t f'irManiing 'o youi Kxc«*llrncy the « o, y ol a rori-si o< d i.ce b.• iwt-vn Mr.RowUixt Hil-amJ mywll, wilhrslvi-S' ca to a Irttei ( Ln eni'lo.'ril) h I a Wrresrd •o 'hr K ii'or oi ibr 1 irol in favor") the rublic in 'be Mo ber Country.Your Kxcel-I-i.cy wrl itoublless not fail to notice the Ktatr-ment oi Mr.How.'and Hi'l that this new taxation was assent d to by the CoIomuI Govern men » two years ago, when a reduction in die cnaigc lor letters passu g between G ea' hritau amt me Colonies w^s sug-jeati-d by the I’cst Id-live Department in mi* country.I b-ve ti e bon«r t be.Your ExieMeiicy's most obf.servt,, Cvsack I*.Ronkt.To His Excellency The Governor of P.S —A Post Office notice in io-«!ay*s London papers calls attent-on to me fact that P»«i»eia lor the Colonies, wii .•it Postage vtamps .irix «I to ttiem, w ill not l>e lore sriled.1 uudsrs and dit* a though only ten tiny* hive elapse.! since ti.' new arbitrary regulation t.os come into oi r< * tiou, there are several ton» of newspapers ! ‘it at tt-e Post Otfi e which will not be lorwai I.It is unn*cessarv to dwell upon the im tie' .ommeicid at .social ucorivenienee that t .f.consequeul./ tske place in eveiy liiitisn colony.be trueted m any other department, buo»u»« they were lez)t, or because they were roia-oh.ovously active—for every reason iu the world, fu fact, except becau-ne they ktvew anything of the department they undertook to administer. To this time-honored practice Sir William Moleaworth ia a fi st and most signal exception ; he is Colonial Secretary because he understands the colonies and lor no other reason whatever. It would be difficult to exaggerate the aer-vicea which during his parliamentary career the new Colonial Secretary haa reud' c1 to the cauae ol the new ooloniea, and the dAgre^ in which, by so doing, ho haa consolidated and concilitated the remoter portions of this great empire. He was the first to denounce the intolerable evils resulting Irom the system of transportation to the Australian colonies, with its inversion of right and wrong, its material prosperity, and moral rottenness. If not the founder, he may fairly te termed the reguatur and purifier of lhat great group of depennenciee. He was among the early colonizers of Now Zealand, though entirely free from the que-tiou-;.l»le aets which a 11er wards discredited that nul'le undertaking. He ;xieseased and imparted to parliament vast stores of knowledge as to the complicated relations between the English settlers at the < ape of Good Hope, the Dutch Boers, and toe savage tribe» by which they are menaced and surrounded. To him we mainly own the establishment of the principle now recognized as an axiom, but formerly ridiculed as a parauox, that to the colonies should lie intrusted the management ol their own affairs, and the establishment of that double electoral chamber, which seems likely to pe’ vade all British commutii-ties, troni Canada u> New Zealand, lohis untiring exertions we ewe it that the country has been spared the enormous expense ol maintaining troops in these distant regions, and no one has thrown more light on the best constitution for dependencies, atnl on the iiia'iuer in which imperial should l>e distinguished from local powers. These are solid qualifications for the olfice, and augur well for the m nues in which its duties will be performed.Much will lie expoeied from such a minister, and Sir William Molesworth must bean indefatigable and aucceistul it he overcomes the formidable rivalry ol his own already achieved reputation.THE ARMISTICE.Corrr«|>ood*M« erf the Loudon Time».Camp Baroac Scsastopol, June 26.The sad history ofthe I9|h, which I was obliged to interrupt ou the departure of the mail, is soon finished. The bodies of many a brave officer whom I knew iu old time* old times of the war, for men’s live* are abort here, and the events of e life are cotupre»e* seen anfl further P*rtie« l»rs obl'-n«-0 be subject to the approval of th* Senior Com-miMsriat Officer at Quebec for the time being, and to be wairan'ed to keep tweet ai d eound lor tv of delivery.Payment will be maileoa each delivery.Frcrola Ox Beef, Of th* beat quality.'0 be properly •Uutbterod, and to conaist of equal portion* ol tor* and hind Quarter*, tt be subject to tbe approval ol the Senior Commissariat Offlc-r.for the time being at Quebec Payment will be mode monthly, but the amount due for the fiiet mon h’* supp y will he retained hy (he Commissariat, until tb# expiration of the Contract Partie* tendering are desired not to fail to ascertain the reo aintng conditions of this contract, before they make their Tender.FOKAC1E.For daily Ration for Cavalry and Artillery, conaiating of lUlb*.of Oat*.12 lb* of Hay, and 8 lb* of Straw. For other troop* 9 lb* ol Oata, •>r 14 Iba.of Bran, |6 tbe.of Hay, and 6 Iba of Straw.Tendeia to atate the price of each description of Raiion, also each item, should a psrt only be required The deliveries must be mailt irom the Commimariat Stores or the Contractor*!
