and we have every reason to believe mat in this new branch of Canadian enterprise will be found a material advantage both to tne adventurer and to the Province.last-named Conncillor ; that they had been accused of venality and even perjury ; liberty to separate parents and children, husband and wife, brother and sister ; liberty to seduce their wives and daughters, and to sell your own children into bondage ; liberty to kill these children with impunity, when the murder cannot be proven by one of pure white blood.This is the kind of liberty, the liberty to do wrong, which Satan, chief of tbe fallen angels, was contending for when he was cast into hell.I have the honor to be, very respectfully, D.Hunter, ilaj.-Gen.New York, June 1st.—The following are ad-dition.-.l particulars ot Mexican news to the 8th nit.: — Gen.Comonfort, who had received reinforcements, tried to attack tbe French forces in the rear, but Gen.Basin’s division opposed him, whi h defeated its opponent completely.The battle took place near San Lorenzo, Comonfort losing 2,500 men in killed, wounded and prisoners, seven or eight rifled cannon, and the greater part of his equippage and munitions of war.It appears that Comoufort’a attack had for its principal object to favor the entrance into Puebla of a large convoy of provisions and ammunition.Gen.Forey had received in time part of the heavy artillery he expected, and already, on tbe I6tb, had mounted a battery opposite the Fort of Tali Metaer, one of the most dreaded in Puebla.On the same day the artillery began the fire, and by the 17th, a breach had been made.Gen.Forey then commanded an assault to be made, but resistance immediately ceased.A part of the French army entered the town and Gen.Onego surrendered unconditionally with all his forces, including all the artillery and equipments.New York, June 2nd.—The steamer Crtole from New Orleans on the 24th, arrived this morning.A despatch in the Era of the 24th, dated Port Hudson Plains, 22nd, says yesterday Augur’s whole division waa engaged in a nine hours’ fight on Port Hudson Plains, four miles in rear of Port Hudson, on the Bayou Sara road.The Confederates were thoroughly whipped, and left large numbers of killed and wounded on the field.Tbe Confederate Gen.Gardner sent in a flag of trace at midnight, asking permission to bury tbe dead.We look 1,000 prisoners.The enemy was driven three miles from their first position, and Augur bivouacked on the field of battle.Our loss was 12 killed and 56 wounded.The 116th New York and 2nd La.suffered most.Our men fought with great bravery.The Herald's Washington despatch states that intelligence has been received through Confederate sources that Vicksburg has fallen.Confirmation by our advices is awaited.Tne Tri6nne’* special says official despatches from Vicksburg, received this morning, up to the 28th nit., is of a highly encouraging nature, but mention no specific successes.No danger is apprehended.The Times’ special despatch says that Gen.Hunter has been relieved from the command O' the department of the South, and General Gilmore will succeed him.The Star believes that there will be a battle at Menasses shortly.The Heiaid's special despatch, dated Headquarters, Army of the Potomac, says that a Hag of truce was sent across the Rappahannock yesterday.The Confederate officers stated that Grant bad been repulsed at Vicksburg; GENTLEMEN,—The dissolution of Parliament having imposed upon you the necessity of e>ectiog a representative I again ask from you a renewal of that confidence, which on four different occasions you bave been kind enough to grant me At this busy season of the year, when every hour is occupied, and nearly all are engaged In out-door pursuits, it is impossible for me to have the advantage of a personal canvass, and I almost hesitate to trespa.-s on your time by inviting you to public meetings.My principles, however, have been long known to you, and are unchanged.Two questiona now of more than usual importance, should particularly engage the attention of our public men.Honor and istereet alike require that Immigration and the Militia should receive more consideration and meet with greater encouragement.The one is a source of greatness ; from the other spring respect and safety.As a public mao I bave endeavoured to preserve yoar confidence by maintaining calmly, if not loudly, civil and religious liberty, and the welfare of the Province.Unless my conduct bas been at variance with my inteutioos, I have a right to count upon yonr support, for our obligations to each other are mntual, and I have either been strangely wanting in the performance of my public duties, or I am much mistaken in my opinion of you if out of office and in opposition I «ball not receive the tame générons support which you extended to me as a Minister of the Grown, when yon twice conferred on me by aeclamsiien the honor of representlug you in the Gemmons of Canada.I have the boner to be, Gentlemen, Yonr obdt Servant.CHARLES ALLEYN.Quebec, May 27, 1863.Fresh Drugs, Chemicals, £fc.QUEBEC DISPENSARY.THE Subscriber has received per u Oity of Hamilton,n from Loadon, a fresh supply of Genuine English Drugs, Chemicals, Patent Medicines, Perfumery, Combs, Brushes, &c., &c.JOHN E.BURKE, Upper Town Market Place.Quebec, May 29, 1863. 6 TO THE ELECTORS QUEBEC^ WEST.GENTLEMEN,—A writ having been issued for this section of the Guy, you will, in a few days, be called on to name a fit and proper person to represent you in the Provio-cial Parliament.I here been invited to avail myaelf ef this opportunity to offer my aervicts for your suffrages.You bava all known me for manv years past, and am satisfied you will believe me when I state that, if elected, I will do all in my power to support and assist the Honorable President of the Council and his colleagues, who have come forward to put a stop to the extravagant expenditure, which existed in this Province between the years 1866 and 1862.The best proof of such enormous expenditure you have m the Official Beturos furnished to the late Parliament, showing that In 1855 the Provincial Debt was.$49,159,884 And in 1862 it was.$72,666,172 And until a year ago it would appear that no attempt had been made to put a atop to aueh axtravaganoe ;
