Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

scene of these trials was invested with all the sensational interest of a dramatic denouement. Before eleven o’clock, when the judges took their places, the court house was densely crowded. At the sitting of the court the convicted prisoners were put forward They entered the dock with a firm step and stood at the foot.“ Colonel " Warren on the right, ‘‘General’’ Hatpin in the centre, and “ Captain ” Costello ar his left.Warren is a quiet, sleek looking man, with a large, pale, rather impressive face, from which his hair was smoothed back.He had an earnest, thoughtful expression, and might have passed for one who had keen engaged in studying for the clerical professions, or, indeed, any other pursuit than that of war.He claims to be an American citizen, but ifhe was disposed to deny his own country his speech would undoubtedly betray Him, for he retains some unmistakable characteristics of the national patois.Hatpin's appearance was unchanged since he last stood at the bar.Costello was tbe only one of the three whose appearance and manner were calculated to evoke tbe slightest sympathy. He is a young fellow of about 23 or 24 years of age, of black hair and rather prepossessing countenance. The three prisoners availed themselves to the full of the indulgence of the court in addressing it when called on to say way sentence should not be pronouuced, and the characters of the three men were illustrated by the manner and matter of their speeches.Colonel Warren appeared to have set before him one object to which he adhered, despite the frequent remonstrances of the court, namely, to threaten tho retributive vengeance of America, for the treatment of which he had received from the Crown officials and the jury.He said they hod, foolishly for tliemsclves, raised an issue which would be settled by another tribunal, and that the treatment which he had received would make the swords leap from the scabbards of Brother Joiuu than.Halpin’s speech was determined by a most persistent insolence. When interrupted by the court, he deliberately resumed the thread of his vituperation, until he wound up with an observation upon the Prince of Wales, so gross that tbe coart threatened to have him removed if he persevered in such a line of observation. The prisoner Costello, was, on the contrary, rather respectful and modest in bis tone, aud though he spoke with impassion ed vehemence, striking tho bar repeatedly, and casting excited looks around the galleries, he left an impression rather of pity for his youth, and regret that so much earnestness and ability should have been misapplied.Ho alluded in brief but touching terms to the blight of bis youthful hopes, and the unhappy prospect which awaited him, tom from his home and friends. He, in the most solemn terms, protested his innocence. The addresses of the prisoners lasted for two hours. They all agree in denouncing tbe informers and the Governor of the Kilmain-ham, whose position has rendered him especially obnoxious to the Fenians.Halpin, among other observations upon the character of the treatment of prisoners at Kilmaiuhaxn, remarked that “ hell was a bad place, and tbe devil a bad boy, but ho could not hold a candle to Mr.Price." When stopped by the court he said he would “ say no more about the old gorilla." Mr.Price, the Governor, he said, was like Rubinson Crusoe, “ monarch of all he surveyed." Costello concurred in thinking that there could not be a more infernal dungeon than Kilmuiuham. At the conclusion of the prisoners' statements tbe chief Baron addressed them in impressive language, and sentenced Warren and Halpin to fifteen years, and Costello to twelve years penal servitude. The prisoners were removed from court under a stre ng military escort aud lodged at Kilmaiu-ham.A TnRXATXNINO rtNtAX DOCDMKXT.The London papers publish a remarkable document purporting to bo written by the “ church contributions, 25 cents ; car fare and books, 50 cents ; clothing, $1.50 ; total $6.50.The balance, $1.50, I deposit in the bank." A young man, gives his experience thus : “ My income is $20.00 a week.My average expenses are : for board and room, $7.60; I would like to marry, but don't see how I can.The ladies are so extravagant and have so many expensive habits that I can’t support a wife." ' Patti has been singing in a new opera at tho “ Italiens.” It is of Prince Poniatowski's composition, and is called “Don Dcsiderio." Although not strictly new, having been given in Rome in 1842 and at the “Italiens’*'iu 1848, it «vas yet welcomed osa novelty on Us revival with the “divine Adelina" in the principal character. The story is pretty and amusing.A wife lias been separated from her husband for some years, living in a comfortable and evidently agreeable manner with her daughter Angiolina, represented by Patti.Of course, the prima donna is in with the first tenor ; but poverty stands in the way.Fortunately, the husband of the separated wife and the father of Angiolina dies.Don Desiderio, a born blunderer, secures the will and hurries off to anuouucn the good news to the little family. The will leaves all to the widow, and happiness beams for an instant, until a dreadful codicil is found which bequeaths the whole property to charity in case the will is opened within twenty-four hours of his death, which, through the zeal of Don Desiderio, has been done.* The Don, in despair, meditates suicide for one entire act, when an honest lawyer proposes that be marry the widow, fit out Angiolina with a dowry and thus mend matters The widow agrees, and all goes on merrily until the deceased husband makes his appearance in the flesh and upsets all the nicely laid plans. Then there is a chorus, a general reconciliation and embracing, everybody is made happy, and Patti is overwhelmed with bouquets. At the Ottawa St.George’s Society Concert on Tuesday evening, tbe Hon.Mr.Howe made a lengthy and rather humorous speech. He drew comparisons between England and Nova Scotia, and said Providence would uo doubt have made it an island like England, but for the convenience of the Intercolonial Railroad.Nova Scotia like England had coal and iron ; it hadalso gypsum. And he begged to,remind them that Nova Scotia had the best of grindstones of the clearest grit, and would recommend any of the Canadians who might have &u axe to grind to send it there, for thq grindstones were so sharp they would grind even The speake gave hia experience as a traveller in Epgland, spoke of tiie varions dialects, tbe high state of cultivation, its treasures of history and literature, and concluded by reading an original poem illustrative of the genius of 4be country. The bon.gentleman was immensely cheered throughout his speech.Col.Gray and Dr.Grant also made speeches. The former said that what he wanted to see was all tbe people of whatever nationality to come together, and with all their home feelings iptensified, bring them to bear on this our Canada.Let us encourage our own national songs and literature. The time bad arrived for laying tho foundations of our nationality.Speaking of Nova Scotia, tho country of his honorable friend Mr.Howe, be did not believe there was any faltering there ; on the contrary be believed that if the flag of England was assailed to-morrow the sons of Nova Scoti a would be among the first to rush to its defence.mill other £3 S !
