Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

and the proposed plan is, therefore, likely to find favor as bsing the most economical one.The strongest objection, however, to placing the management of a work of such magnitude in the hands of the Government ia the opportunity it affords to party lesuiere to bestow the patronage corruptly, aa is too often the case.In this connection an eminent authority Bays abilit:rs lu fivor ot tbe race are increasing, ‘i be jadgeb’ boat is up tbe course, arr-nkiog the lurniug boats.4 40 pm —Tbe judges bave just takcu po-kition at ibe upper sUkcs.Tbe wind is going down, and everything looks favorable lor the race.Heavy trains Lave just arrived.6.30 p.m —Ihe left roe and judges ere aboard tbe lug at the starling point, wailing for perfectly smooth water.6 66 p m.—Tbe race bas daikened and (bo crowds ars looking lorvard witb groat disgust to another disappoiulm* nt.A heavy log ov rhaoga tbe course, completely abut-ilogout tbe opposite abore, and at tue time biding tbe men.Tbe judgea’ boat Is iu tbe middle of tbe stream, when tbe sun bvgina to decline ; James tbeu left the boose, and for some time it wss supposed he hsd fled, bat he has since been foaad in tbe turn hanging by the neck, deed The old mao was found behind the barn dead, with Lis skull smashed in.The inference Is that be had been killed by bis son before tbe attack was made on the rest of the family.His body hod been dragged some distance towards a straw-stock, tbe muiderer probably contemplating hiding tbe body or boming it in the straw-stack, bat abandoned tbe Inten tioa.Tne girl first attacked is dangerous,y hart, her injuries having caused her to vomit blood.There bad been a quarrel about sums of money wbicb James bod stolen from tbe old man on different occasions, and he had stolen money to go to the Oddfellows’ excar-sion to Hamilton, which comes off to-da , and bis father had discovered this.The pamp handle bad been sawn off, leaving a square end on purpose to accomplish his murderous intentions.A later and more explicit accoont of ths Bockford tragedy Is that young Smith went to bis sister’s room some time in thq night and stole the key of bis father’s money-box from a string of keys which were sroand tbe oldest girl’s body.He stole tbe money and pat the key bark la the bed, and upon the girl turning over in tbe bed shortly afterwards felt tbe key which awakened ber, and suspecting what had been done, as they had expected be would attempt thev theft.Bbe then got op and told her father something was wrong, os the string of the keys bai been cot from her body.Her father thea got op, and went to the son’s room and so cosed him of taking the money.They both then come down stairs and had some words, tbe old man threatening to have him arrested if he did not give ap the money.His son th'-n gave ap part of tbe money The hither then procured a halter, and started for the field to get a horse to go to Bimcoe, saying he would put a atop to this kind of work.The son followed him ap lane back of the barn, and there murdered him with a club about two feet six inches long, which be had prepared the evening before from an old pomp handle, and which the glria saw him catting, not knowing for what purpose.It was reaad at the end, not square, as before stated.His subsequent actions are correctly detailed in the tiret report.Tbe old man was forty-nine years oi sge, snd highly respected.?a inquest was held this afternoon on tbe bodies of George and James Smith, tbe victims ol the Bocaford tragedy, by Dr.Hayes, of Simcoc, aseieted by D.s.Howell and Lan-g ill, of ibis village.In the cose of George Smith a verdict was returned in accordance with tbe foregoing facts, and to the effect that James Smith committed eaicide by banging.It is tbeugbt ths eldest girl will recover.Tne mother only died about oue year ago.She was tbe second wife, bat left only one child, a boy.The rest now living—two girls and a boy—are children of the first wife.James wss to have been married to-day.Miscegenation prevoiU in Liberia, according to tne Cnarleetoo Aews and Courier’» ccr-teapoudent, and tbe murals f tbe lower class axe no bettor t au they sbuuld be.Tun can swear at a native and call bim 11 tbe names you like, except “oigge or Its équivalant Tbe employment of tria sacred word as * term of reproach is punished by a flue.The correspondent might have added that everywhere tbe negro reset:to a* (he worst of lu-solts an aliusiou to his oolo.“B ack nig get” is tne wont name a quarrelsome Afr eon The Great Bhohenees Remedy Is an Indian vogetabls compound, composed of tbe j aloes ot a variety of remarkable medicinal plarts and herbs;
