Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Johnston, who occupied the chair, addressed the puplis and their teach- ‘ers.He referred to the extensive pos [sessions of the Brit sh Empire, upon which the sun ever shone, reminding them that they belonged to the greatest Empire which the world has ever Imeen. The country to which® they i belonged, this Canada of ours, was portrayed with all its heauties.c Mr.Johnston went on to show the population of the Empire, taking Canada ‘and the other colonies.| The Rev.Mr.Love then addressed the gathering. The rev.gentleman, in referring to Empire Day, inform- ‘ed them that the movement had becn first introduced into the department of education in the Province of Queby the Hon.Nr.Rosa about three me ago, and that it has been observed for some time in Ontario.“The day chosen by Ontario and the Maritime Provinces for the celebration of Empire Day also falls upon the 23rd of May.The reverend gen- ,tleman went on to say that he had been struck \\by the patriotism of the boys and girls of the United States, in comparison to that of Canadians. He would not infer that Canadians were not loyal, but they did not give way to thelr feelings to the same extent an the Americans.British Columbia has not yet observed the day, but will probably do so in the near future. The object is love, devotion and patriotism, and the proposition is that while the forenoon should be | taken up with discussion and song, the afternoon should be observed as holiday.* ‘The Rev.Donald Tait, who also addressed the assembly on patriotism, stated that while the Americans car ried it to the extreme, showing too i much ling, we in Canada here were inclined tp carry it to the other extreme. The rev.gentleman went into the derivation of the word pat- i riotism, showing how It had originally sprung from the Latin word | Pater, à father.Patriotism, he imajd, was not hatred for other countries, hut love of your own land first. No matter how humble, we should all love our native land, The speaker took for example sush men as Bruce, Wallace and others. There was special reason for loving Canada with all her beauties, the Rocky Mountains and great lakes and the view from our own Terrace was unexcelled He then quoted the words of Princess Louise, in which she spoke of the splendid view from the Terrace. He compared the St.Lawrence with the Hudson; which is called the Rhine of America. The St.Lawrence could indeed compare favorably with the Rhine and the Amazon. The advantages of religion and education were nowhere greater than in Cansda. Some people had said that Canada had no history.Canada has a history, and is proud of it.It will also grow in years to come.Canada {ard the whole of the British Empire in reigned over hy nme of the ent and hest ladies who ever Be |”
