Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

New York, Dec.82—The opening was quiet and irregular.Early changes in prices were generally upward, but slight in extent.Improvement continue, however, pretty weil throughout the session, There was no definite news of importance, but it was reported from Holland that the Krupp plant st Essen was an fire aud had been burning for twenty four hours. The news was said to come through German refugecs escaping over the border who would probably not be the best source of lsformation.Banking houses have nu information about it.Improvement and activity in foreign government securities was again a feature and in banking houses it was stated that the buying orders tn these issues were coming from the very best sources, such as would presumably lave access to official information from the allied governments. No effurt was made to connect this buy ing with the Krupp fire story. The best information about next Liberty logs indicates that the amount wili probably be six billions, the rate of interest four per cent and the time ot offering February 15th or March Ist.Sales, 172,000./ (By Bruneau & Dupuis.) New York, Dec.22—-Tihe market las been intensely dull but steady atter yesterdays gain and this latter itature is the important one.As slsted in our earlier gossip there | seems to he a cessation of the liquidation arising from effort to estab lish losses under the income tax and titis no doubt is due to the recent iuling of the treasury departments. What is important at the present , time is for the market to find itself "and establish a reasonably steady lz.vel from which changes would natu- raily occur with the development of the war.It is to be hoped that we have experienced the worst of the war news which inevitably followed tie collapse of Russia and that from uw on the allies will have the situ- at.on better in hand. The only fur- cign news of importance is a rumor in the * (hat there is à serious fire fsupp works. The market on the whole has à very dull.Saturday aspect.* ‘Total Sales, Stocks, 178,600.CUoONDOOONGORADIVOY 3 THL TORONTO 3 le PROOUGE MAZXET.© 1 4 ® (VOCE 330 200000064004 Whent: Ontariu.No.8 winter $228 Wiheat: Manitoba, N> 1 northeun $2.23 1-2 store Fort William includ- , ing @ 1-9e.tax; No.2 northern $2.20 1-8.3 1-3¢.tax; No.8 northern $2.17 1-2 2 9-2c.tax.Oats—Canada western, No.3 80 1-2 stera Fort William; No » Canada wertern 76 3-4 store Fort William.Ontario: No.2 white, 77c to toc; No.3 white, 76c to 77¢ outside.Peas—No.2, $3.70 tu $3 du, accorde Nig to freights Rye, No.2 $1.70, Barley: $1.30 to $1.31 outside for malting.: Buckwheat: $1.38 ning points.Flour: Manisha.Listed quotation +t Toronto are: Hirst patents $1.89 in bags second patents.$11.00 bags; strong bakers, $10.60, Flour: Ontario, winter, 90 per cent patents, $0.70 bulk seaboard, Millfeed — Manitoba: bran $35.00 to $1.60 ship.thorts, $40.00 per ton, car lots de- liverd Montreal, F.C.Box 812, BREEN & GOURDEAU STOCK AND BOND BROKERS, 6 ST.PETER STREET, and ¢ SAULT-AU-MATELOT STREET Frivate Wire Connections: Molson & Robin, membete fens Beard = Soa Mowatt ii tes Rachenge, and New York aswel Exchange end .No.2849, of 1917.‘ CANADA, |) In the Rucord- | Province of Quebec) ar's Court, of tae District of Quebec ) Clty of Quebec.No.203, of 1917.The Ci f t 7 of Quebes, Pluatift, ve Leopold Marchessault, heretoiore of our City of Quebec, in the District of Quebte, keeping a shooting gallery Defendant.Defendant 1s ordered to appear within ons month from the last publication of this notice.Quebee, December 23nd, 1917.TH.DUBE Clerk of the Recorder's Court, of the City of Quebec CANADA, ) În the Record Province of Quebec) er's Court, cf the Distriet of Quebec.) report President Butler, afteg discussing the whole question of academie discipline, as brought to public notice by the cases of those students who were ndicted and conveted of offenses against the United States Government, concludes that one of the few points upon which practically all writers on education agree is that a chief aim, if not the chief aim, of the educational progress is good character.President Butler therefore finds that it is quite idle to suppose that 8 university may overlook a student's character, wherever or however manifested, to confer upon him its honors and rewards simply because he has complied with certain formal rules as to academic residence, fulfilled certain prescribed intellectual tests, and paid certain designated fees Such a view he thinks, would convert the university into a factory and make its degrees and rewards merely a matter of manufacture, bargain, and ale, and not a matter of education at ait.President Butler says further that academic freedom is the freedom to say what you think without thinking what you say.and he asserts that there is no real reason to fear that heen in the slightest danger America, What is constantly in danger, he points cut, is a just sense of academic opligation.“When a teacher accept: an Invitation to become 4 member of an academie society.” wrkes President Butler, “he ‘thereupon loses some of the freedom that he formerly possessed He has voluntarily accepted the - restrictions put upon him hy the tra- pases of the institution with which he | has become associated.Try as he may, he can no longer write or speak in his own name alone. What he says or writes gains significance and a hearing because of the prestige of the academic y to which he belongs To that prestige, with all that that owes 3 distingt, a constare and a compelling obligation. To maintain wue's tonneetion with an academic society whilp at war with its purposes or disloyal to ita traditions or oryaniza- tion is neither wise nor just.No one is compelled to remain in an academic association which he dislikes | or which makes him uncomfortable.Academic obligation is reciprocal. The academic society owes him en- couragentent compansation as gemer- nus as its resources will aford, and! protection from unfair attack and criticism, as well as from all unavoidable hamperings and embarrassments in the prosecution of his intellectual work.” The very few men of letters and academic teichers who inake trouble for themselves and their associates says Presider Butler, are for the most part men “who know so many things which are not so that they make ignorance appear to he not only interesting.but pusitively important. The time has not come.however, when rational persons can contemplate with satisfaction the rule of the literary or academic Bolsheviki or permit them to seize responsibility for the intellectual life of the nation.” “The same type of mind,” to quote the report, “which insists that it knows nn country but humanity.and that one should aim to he a citizen of nn state hut daly of the world.in- dalged itaolf in the Retion thar one may be disloyal to the academic to.ciety which he has voluntarily ininsd in order tn thaw rev Ha ta anme- thing that he conceives to h2 higher and of greater valu “Neglect of one’s academie adliga- tion, ar careleswmess regarding it, River rise tn difficult prnhlems, Men nf mature years who have a:hisved Late arrivals at the Chateau: Lieutand Mrs, F.B.Warner, Ottawa; D.Ritchie, A, E.Blaskell, Montreal; H.Piddington, Ottawa: Mr, and Mrs, P.| J.Lafñecte, Warwick: O.C.Smith, ‘ Me.and Mrs.B.J.Bennett, F.Bennett, Thetford Mines; Capt.and Mrs, J, A.Goutet, E.Langlois, Three Rivers; James A.Burke.Elizabeth Burke, Lt.-Col.J.D.Brousseau, Halfax; Mrs.Brousseau, D.Brouxseau, Wm.Ritchie, Three Rivers; T.'W, Ferguson, Ottawa, Mr, and Mrs.M.K.Boiger celebrated on Saturday the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. At à ociock in the morning à Low Mass was offered at St.l’atricks’ Ghurch Grand Allee, the celebrant being the kev.Father Woods C.SSR.Rector oi St.Patrick's Parish.During the Mass à solo was feelingly rendered by Miss Lottie Bolger, who was accompanied by Professor Dessane and Mr, A, Besudry upon the violin, A reception was held in the alter noon at the jubilarian's home, 51 Conroy street, st which the follow ing members of the family were pre- tent—Mr.and Mre.M.MH.Bolger and family, Montreal; Mr.Jack R.Bolger, Montreal; Mr.Fred Bolger, Montreal; Mr.Allan Bolger, Aurora, Unt; Miss Lottle Boiger, Quebec} Mr, and Mes, D, A, Case, How York; Xr, and Mra A.J, Browns, Outre reputation enoueh tn he invited tn accupy à post of responsibility in a and be cailed upon !
